True story: the first pair of concert tickets that I ever won from listening to the radio was for The Moody Blues on their Long Distance Voyager tour. For some reason my parents didn't think it would be appropriate for a 13 year old to go, so I got to keep the record (long since lost) and gave my tickets to the high school kids across the street. As a founding member of the ground breaking Bauhaus, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Ash has distinguished himself in the world of contemporary music. He later went on to form Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets. Bauhaus were an English rock band formed in Northampton in 1978. Known for their dark image and gloomy sound, they are one of the pioneers of gothic rock, although they mixed many genres, including dub, glam rock, psychedelia, and funk. Love and Rockets were formed in 1985 by former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins after that group split in 1983. Ash and Haskins had recorded and performed in another band, Tones on Tail, between 1982 and 1984.

The Jazz Butcher special with Pat Fish in conversation with David Eastaugh The band was formed in Oxford in 1982 by Pat Fish and Max Eider. The début album in Bath of Bacon was released by Glass Records in 1983. A second album A Scandal in Bohemia, also on Glass, featured guest appearances from David J and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus. After four albums, and two singles collections for Glass, Fish signed to Creation Records in 1988, releasing eight albums on the label, culminating in 1995's Illuminate.

Originally from Chicago and now living in New York City, singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Polonsky has released six full-length records in the last 23-years before releasing his latest LP "Kingdom of Sleep" early this year. This album was mixed and mastered by Mike Tholen (Chris Connelly, Revolting Cocks). It was self-produced by Polonsky on Ghostworks Recordings. Polonsky has worked with many talented musicians through the years and performed on albums by Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Tom Morello, Pete Yorn, Dixie Chicks, Minnie Driver, Donovan, Mark Lanegan, Maynard James Keenan, Francis Black, Kevin Haskins, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and many others. His latest single, "You Turn Me On" is remixed by Jim Sclavunos, one of the members of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Grinderman. Bauhaus were an English post-punk band, formed in Northampton, England in 1978. The group consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals, occasional instruments), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums) and David J (bass). The band was originally named Bauhaus 1919 in reference to the first operating year of the German art school Bauhaus, although they shortened the name within a year of formation. One of the first gothic rock groups, Bauhaus were known for their dark image and gloomy sound, although they mixed many genres, including dub, glam rock, psychedelia and funk.

Kevin Haskins's spare, hypnotic style laid the foundation for goth luminaries, Bauhaus. He tells Joe about: growing up in Northampton; seeing bands like The Who and Led Zeppelin; how the burgeoning punk scene gave him confidence to pursue music; playing the now-classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead" for the first time; the sense of devastation he experienced after the breakup of Bauhaus; working with subsequent bands such as Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets; and passing on his love of music to his children. “David J Says Peter Murphy Is Keeping Everyone In Stitches” Although it’s hard to imagine the Dark Prince of Goth is also a fountain of chuckles, David J says his bandmate Peter Murphy has been in fine form and keeping everyone laughing while on tour. The two former Bauhaus members have teamed up with a full band for an extensive tour to commemorate 40 years of Bauhaus and they’re crushing it everywhere they go. The former Love and Rockets/Bauhaus bassist/singer talks to Alex about how his reunion with Murphy came about, his relationship with former bandmates Daniel Ash and brother Kevin Haskins and why he’ll never retire. He also talks about reading Ian Curtis’ love letters, the sadness of the Beach Boys and his work with the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy. "We said at the time, 'this is either gonna be commercial suicide or this is our Dark Side of the Moon'." As anyone who knows me can attest...I am a huge Bauhaus and Love & Rockets fan. I have been since I was a teen. I had the fortunate occassion to interview David J last year on this very podcast and I described it best back then: "Everybody has that one band. That band that you discovered in your teens that made you realize music can mean more to a person than mere beat and melody. That band that helps you discover who you are. That band that soundtracks your adolescence and thus your entire life. For me, that band was Bauhaus." So of course, you can imagine my excitement when I learned that Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins were slated to stop in Denver for a Lipgloss DJ set. They graciously agreed to a meeting at the Fire Lounge in the Art Hotel on Broadway for a special edition taping of Behind The Scene on COScene!
