It's time to dive into U2's much beloved, and also much maligned 9th studio album, Pop. It's a polarizing work among fans and critics and God knows the band's spent the last 25 years trying to distance themselves from it. But when you consider what it was intended to be and what they delivered, it is a record that could have been so much more. But the question is why? Was it really because they let Paul McGuiness book the tour too soon and they ran out of time to properly finish it? Was it not having Eno and or Lanois on board? Was it having too many producers? Or did they just not have the big songs as Bono has conceded? Tune in and find out.
U2 had stolen the show at Live Aid. Rolling Stone had named them the Band of the 80s. And the Unforgettable Fire, while something of a left turn did top the charts in the UK and was top 20 in the U.S. So, the anticipation for their next record was not only building but there was a growing feeling that it was going to be a monster. It was. But getting there was not easy. In this episode we talk about the tag team production of Eno and Lanois. About U2 hitting pause and playing Self-Aid and the Amnesty International Tour. And the push and pull between Bono wanting to go Americana and Edge's more Eurocentric tendencies. A dynamic that will work wonders on Joshua Tree but will lead into a dead end creatively by the end of the 80s.
On the show this time, it's the OG desert blues of Mali's Tinariwen. Tinariwen has been bringing the sound of the northern Sahara to the world for over 20 years. Their music has won the hearts of listeners worldwide, regardless of language spoken. There's a vibe, a hypnotic groove, and a poetic humanness that pulls you in. There's also the Blues - the universal music of self-expression in the face of persecution. These musicians have faced hardship and oppression, and it's not over. A coup in 2020, another in 2021, the withdrawal of the French military and ongoing messy battles between various factions has made civilian life very dangerous. Their songs call for unity, and bravely run counter to the more fundamentalist groups, some of whom would ban music altogether. This record features playing from Daniel Lanois, banjo player Wes Corbett and fiddler Fats Kaplin, highlighting the band's Americana influences. This week, one of the greatest, most innovative record producers in history, Daniel Lanois—think U2's The Joshua Tree, Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind, Peter Gabriel's So—talks about the landmark album he made with Willie, 1998's Teatro. He'll start with a deep cut, “I've Loved You All Over the World,” but then, being Lanois, he'll start to float...to Cuban dance clubs, Texas honkytonks, and Mexican movie houses...to art that exists only in shadows...and to the way U2 tries to summon Willie when they write songs.

Dave (known as Freaktography) is a Canadian urban explorer from Ontario who managed to explore one of the most iconic urbex location in the world - the abandoned power plant beneath Niagara Falls - currently converted into a museum. Dave also visited a seemingly simple abandoned cabin in the woods which ultimately lead him to discover a story of a Canadian musician Bob Lanois who lived there. After digging through documents and plenty of interviews with relatives and associates of Bob Lanois he released Bob Lanois Snake Road Documentary. In our interview Dave shares many stories including finding 7000 dollars in abandoned house, describing how his fellow urbexing friends ordered coffee and pizza while exploring and many many more. Daniel Lanois is our guest for this latest Bonus Track. The legendary producer, artist and songwriter joins Matt to discuss his newest solo album, Player, Piano, which is available now.The album features a series of exotic instrumental piano performances and was recorded at Lanois' studio in Toronto with the help of co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz. “Making this record transported me at a time when I couldn't go anywhere,” Lanois reflects. “I got to travel to Cuba and Mexico and Jamaica. I got to visit with the ghosts of Erik Satie and Oscar Peterson and Harold Budd. I got to go back in time to my work with Brian Eno and Kate Bush and Emmylou Harris. All without ever leaving my studio.” In order to achieve the timeless-sounding recordings on Player, Piano, Lanois and Lorenz set about transforming each of the three pianos in the studio, dampening the strings with tea towels and dulling the percussive impact of the hammers by adding small felt pads to the heads. When it came time to record, they used vintage ribbon mics and arranged them behind the instruments rather than in front in an effort to further soften the sound. “I decided that if I was going to make a piano record, I wanted it to sound like recordings from the ‘40s and '50s, back when the piano was soft and beautiful,” explains Lanois. As one of the most acclaimed and influential producers of the modern era, he's helmed iconic albums for everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to U2 and Peter Gabriel. As a prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he's composed scores for Oscar-winning films and blockbuster video games in addition to releasing more than a dozen genre-bending solo records. Rolling Stone declared that his “unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” (think The Joshua Tree, Wrecking Ball, Time Out Of Mind), while NPR lauded him as the author of his own “brilliant albums of heartfelt songs.” Player, Piano follows the 2021 release of Lanois' album Heavy Sun, which received wide acclaim from outlets such as SPIN, World Cafe, No Depression and American Songwriter and more. Each song on Player, Piano is a portal, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment and disappear into a world of imagination and memory. Melodies unfold slowly with patience and grace; ethereal arrangements drift around them like fog rolling through the mountains. More than just an album, Player, Piano is a gateway into a cinematic sonic universe full of mystery and wonder, a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur and deep truths and desires reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways.It was a joy to speak with Daniel and he shared some great stories from his past work, including experiences with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, the Neville Brothers and more.If you dig what we're doing with the podcast, check out our Patreon for bonus material related to these episodes, plus additional interviews and other fun stuff. As a prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he's composed scores for Oscar-winning films and blockbuster video games in addition to releasing more than a dozen genre-bending solo records. Rolling Stone declared that his “unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”. Daniel's own personal point of view informed and influenced a generation of music that still continues to resonate deeply today. Lanois is a searcher. He's perpetually on the hunt for something else - trying to squeeze out another drop from the atmosphere. Which is how, this week, as he turns 71 years old, Daniel Lanois is releasing Player, Piano, his first project of instrumental piano music. The compositions are concise but highly textured - it's a series of exotic instrumental performances and was recorded at Lanois' studio in Toronto - a former Buddhist temple- with the help of his co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz. Daniel and I spoke recently about his early development in Canada and how it influenced his work, his ongoing creative relationship with Brian Eno, why he likes to travel for work, his attraction to melancholy, projects with U2, Peter Gabriel, Brian Blade, Brian Eno, Rick James (yes, Rick James), Neil Young, Terence Malick, when to use the word “we”, the importance of silence, reconnecting with innocence, his production technique of turning “garnishing into a devotion” and why “contemporary work has more to do with vision” than with technology. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios
Welcome to the latest episode of "Behind the Song," where we uncover the stories behind some of the greatest tunes in music history. In this episode, we take a closer look at U2's hit song "One," and the winding road that led to its creation. In 1990, U2 was in Berlin, recording the beginnings of their album Achtung Baby. However, the initial recordings were a struggle. The atmosphere in the studio was tense, and producer Daniel Lanois was not satisfied with the progress. The band was stuck in a creative rut, unable to move forward. But then, Lanois had an idea. He suggested combining two different songs the band had been working on, creating a new, powerful track that would become "One." Bono's lyrics and vocals, paired with the band's instrumentation, came together to create a raw, emotional sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. Join us as we delve into the story behind U2's "One," and explore the creative process that led to the creation of one of the greatest songs of all time.

This week on the Richard Crouse Show Podcast: If you love records like Joshua Tree, Wrecking Ball, and Time out of Mind you know my guest’s work. Daniel Lanois has an incredible resume. His work as a producer for U2, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, the Neville Brothers, Robbie Robertson and Neil Young among many others led Rolling Stone Magazine to say, “His unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” Lanois has moved back to Canada and launched the brand new Maker Series imprint out of his Toronto-based recording studio. First up in the Maker Series is a solo record called Heavy Sun. A soulful, joyous album recorded in Los Angeles and Toronto that fuses classic gospel and modern electronics. He says the intent of the music is to “lift people’s spirits.” Then, we meet Jessica Bruder, author of the 2017 book “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century,” and Bob Wells, a real-life nomad and one of the stars of the Oscar nominated film “Nomadland.” Then, the man, the myth, the legend William Shatner. His career is so epic it spans generations. Some will remember him as the iconic Capt. James T Kirk of the USS Enterprise. Others know him as the veteran police sergeant in T. J. Hooker. Still others think of him as the host of the reality-based television series Rescue 911 or the "Big Giant Head" from 3rd Rock from the Sun or as attorney Denny Crane both in the final season of the legal drama The Practice and in its spinoff series Boston Legal. He’s an actor, an author a singer and now the star of Senior Moment a new rom com on VOD this week. The romantic comedy focuses on Shatner’s character Victor, a retired pilot whose life goes into a tailspin after he loses his driver’s license, but starts looking up when he finds love with a character played by Jean Smart.
Super producer Daniel Lanois has just released the album of the year. This legendary record maker (U2, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, etc), has created the music we all need right now with the just released Heavy Sun. Lanois mixes his masterful knack for atmosphere with his love of gospel music to create a healing gumbo for these tense times. In this conversation, Daniel explains his approach to producing, what musical project is getting him excited, and he shares stories about the artists listed above. Daniel also performs a new song for us that will change your life. I wish all of us had as much soul and calm as Daniel Lanois. Enjoy! www.daniellanois.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
In a career-spanning interview, Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois discusses his latest album, Heavy Sun, and reflects on his influential collaborations with the likes of Brian Eno, U2, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Film producer Deborah Snyder talks about leaving Justice League after experiencing a family tragedy, and explains how fans helped her and her husband, director Zack Snyder, release a new cut of the superhero movie.
In this session, Lanois shares stories about his new album, Heavy Sun, and we'll look back on some classic albums from Bob Dylan, U2, Willie Nelson and more, that he has helped make.
Craig Calcaterra, Steven Goldman & Mike Ferrin discuss the "Final Comeback Album" (so far) of Bob Dylan's career: Time Out of Mind. They discuss whether it's dark or uplifting, whether the material was handled better by other musicians and producers, and whether The Braves should hit Ozzie Albies second to continue a grand tradition.
We’re kicking off 2021 with the legendary producer, guitarist and singer/songwriter Daniel Lanois, talking about one of the greatest debut albums of all time, The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1967 barnstormer ‘Are You Experienced?’ We delve into Daniel’s discovery of the record while he was a teenage record producer in Canada, how the album opened up his imagination, the idiosyncrasies and nuances of Hendrix’s guitar playing technique and how it’s influenced Lanois’ own approach to the instrument, Mitch Mitchell’s jazz influenced drumming and some of the studio innovations that made the album special. Daniel also talks about reimagining ‘May This Be Love’ with Emmylou Harris when they recorded it for her classic album ‘Wrecking Ball’. Plus I pick Daniel’s brain about the making of my favorite Willie Nelson album ‘Teatro’, which he produced and was the subject of a previous episode of this show.

Craig, Mike & Steven look at the Dylan/Lanois collaboration, that capped the 1980's for Dylan while hoping not to fall victim to the disease of conceit
Happy new year and new decade, music nerds! Malcolm Burn, the wildly creative Canadian producer, engineer and musician joins me on the show this month in a 2-part episode. Malcolm grew up in Ontario and in the 80’s, after trying his hand as an artist in pop bands, turned to producing and engineering in the studio and hooked up with Daniel Lanois through his Hamilton, Ontario connection. Burn, Lanois, and a 3rd Ontarian, Mark Howard, worked as a team on a string of incredibly influential albums including Bob Dylan’s “Oh Mercy”, the Neville Brothers “Yellow Moon”, Lanois’ solo “Acadie”, and Emmylou Harris’ “Wrecking Ball”, an innovative and creative career-changing album for her. Burn went on to produce her next record on his own - “Red Dirt Girl”, as well as classics for Chris Whitley and many others. I’ve always wanted some first-hand info on what that scene was like, recording in non-conventional spaces, the idea of engineering as a team, and many of the unique recording techniques they were working with through their careers. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Malcolm Burn as much as I did having it, and please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review. Part 2 will be out next Wednesday!

As a producer, Daniel Lanois has been instrumental in crafting definitive records by U2, the Neville Brothers, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, and more. His productions have a trademark quality -- swampy and percussive, psychedelic but as earthy as the dubs of his noted influence Lee "Scratch" Perry -- that he also brings to his records as a songwriter and composer. His latest, Goodbye to Language, out now on Anti Records, is one of his best. Accompanied by Rocco DeLuca on lap steel, Lanois plays pedal steel, creating a sweeping landscape that spiritually connects to the sounds he contributed to Brian Eno 1983 ambient masterpiece Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. We joined Lanois following a live performance at his place, Bella Vista in Silverlake, to discuss the new record, his long production career, and his definition of "soul music," exploring how that definition guides and directs his artistic approach.

Daniel Lanois - Two Worlds2. Victor Indrizzo is one bad ass mutha. He is known as one of the most sought after session drummers in LA. His list of credits is staggering. He's worked with Willie Nelson, Scott Weiland, Daniel Lanois, Chris Cornell, Marrianne Faithful, Masters of Reality, Michael Penn, Macy Gray, Aimee Mann, Shakira, Sheryl Crow, and so many more bands and artists your head would spin. We sat in his recording studio in Hollywood and discussed his entire career. Victor's a very knowledgeable guy who's been around and seen it all. He's spent countless hours in studios and on the road. A lot of ground is covered here. Great guy, great hang. Recorded in Victor's studio, Hollywood, CA April 2014
These are songs that conjure up images of wind blown landscapes, tumbleweeds, sunbleached rocks, dusty roads and heat waves rising off the ground. Of course most of the music in this mix has an ambient/atmospheric feel. I remember the first time I heard Daniel Lanois' use of slide guitar on "Apollo - Atmospheres & Soundtracks", I hated it. I guess I thought of the slide guitar as too close to "country music" which I definitely hated. Well over the years I've come around on the slide guitar, I love it now. I'm still not a big country music fan, though I do have a ton of Johnny Cash recordings. I've come to appreciate the lonely, melancholy feel that can be expressed through twangy, dusty western music. Of course the ultimate in great ambient twang is Ry Cooder's "Paris, TX" soundtrack. That makes an appearance in this mix along with standbys like Lanois, Steve Roach & A Small Good Thing. I was happy to sneak in a piano tune, "Alice & twins" by Japancakes. It just sort of fit with the overall feel & then the slide guitar comes in to make it even more "dusty". Whether it's the twang of an acoustic guitar, the wail of a harmonica or the ethereal sound of a slide guitar, this mix will drop you off on an abandoned rail line in the middle of nowhere.
