Many thanks to SRAA contributor, Sam Ward, who shares the following studio recording and notes:[This] recording is of the Shortwave Listener's Corner program from December 27, 1987. This edition of the program was a bit unusual in that I don't think they read anyone's letters, but the program definitely does have an Arctic theme to it, plus, Radio Canada International plays a few Christmas carols sung in the Inuktitut language. I certainly appreciate Ian McFarland giving me this studio recording of the show, since I missed it when it was first broadcast.

"Wow!" pretty much sums up my reaction to everything my guest, Business Coach Em Ducharme, shared with me in this episode! Em has experienced all sorts of adversity and struggle at various points on her journey and offers invaluable advice to any entrepreneur who may feel like she's facing "impossible odds." Aside from sharing insights and inspiration from her experience building and working with multiple 6- and 7-figure businesses (in multiple industries, no less), Em and I also spoke about travel, heartbreak, and overcoming loss. Trust me, this is one episode you don't want to miss! SHOWNOTES (3:55) [Em] Born in small village in northern Quebec Province. High-school drop out; moved to Montreal. Opened first restaurant at 20. Weeks into business, discovered mother was terminally ill. Sold the business to be with her until she passed away; studied health and wellness. (6:06) Launched first online business when mom passed away. Sold everything; moved to Italy at 21/22. Lived and worked in 43 countries. (7:26) Restaurant or brick and mortar is physical—you have to be there everyday and see people in person. (10:28) Online business expenses are very different from physical businesses. (11:55) Life is finite. If building a business allows you to spend more time with those you love, then that is an amazing thing. (15:35) Favorite life changing countries: Iceland and Egypt. (16:30) Egypt changed the way I saw the world. Not easy to work there; no phone or internet. Wrote a book. It helped me to understand different culture and religions. (18:10) I also really liked Australia—they have a similar culture like America so it’s easy to make friends. (18:42) Dubai was amazing but very difficult to make friends because of how society acts. (19:30) My personal definition of success is when I started getting referrals and testimonials from people. (21:07) Biggest success: Overcoming hardships and always landing back on my feet. (23:55) You’re always strong enough, you just need to go through a few storms to realize it. (24:32) Want to start a business? Find out what you’re passionate about! If you’re not obsessed with your business when it gets hard you’re going to give up. (27:07) If you feel your vision is too big but you are worried about how you’re going to get there, set milestones for yourself along the way. Start with baby sets. (28:13) Next level of success: When I feel my income is stable, I change something in my life. (29:27) Next for travel: Philippines & Morocco (30:27) Nightmare marriage. Rushed into it. Chose not to let situation destroy me. (34:32) Mindset work needs to be something that is repeated. Tip: Change commonly used phrase of “I know” to “I will”. Halfway through a PhD program, Ellyn Schinke left grad school and traveled the world for a year on Remote Year. She began a life coaching business in the middle of her year abroad and knew she discovered the right path for her. Ellyn is a self-described personal growth enthusiast and the host of the Growth Tribe Podcast. In this episode, Ellyn shares her experience leaving the life path she had always envisioned for herself to find the one she was meant to pursue. She sheds light on her personal growth journey and building momentum and resilience along the way. SHOWNOTES (1:23) Ellyn is a life coach and personal growth enthusiast. (4:37) Ellyn went to college originally for micro-biology! She went on to pursue a PhD. (5:35) She started feeling intense imposter syndrome and she just threw herself into her major and ended up in therapy. (6:13) She decided to do something for herself and become a personal fitness coach. (7:15) Ellyn’s grandpa died in spring 2016 and this was the beginning of a mini downward spiral. So she decided to quit graduate school in her fourth year. (8:29) She found an online company where she could travel the world and work online. (11:58) Ellyn realized at month 6 of her international nomad travels that she couldn’t keep up with this busy lifestyle. (12:30) It was a good period of personal growth. (19:43) She started to relinquish her ‘scientist’ identity and started introducing herself as a scientist AND a life coach. (20:03) Ellyn got her second life coaching client through meeting someone from Remote Year. (21:30) Ellyn started embodying the fact that she was now a life coach who did some science editing on the side. (26:47) A lot of people told Ellyn that she was brave for leaving the PhD program, but she also had people telling her that they thought the decision she made was stupid or they were disappointed in her. (28:08) The success she has are the testimonials she has on her website besides just her monetary income. (29:10) Ellyn keeps herself motivated and moving forward when she is feeling a lack of motivation by checking into her ‘Why’. (37:38) Ellyn feels successful because she is creating something that is HERS. (39:07) Ellyn’s personal definition of success is: personal growth, momentum, resilience. (44:22) Ellyn does not define her success by if she is achieving her goals or not. (45:01) Ellyn’s advice to young women on their journey to success: Just start. “Stop shoulding yourself.” (47:08) Two types of shoulds, empowering shoulds and disempowering shoulds. (49:38) Do shoulds for yourself, the things that feed your soul. (55:12) Ask yourself this question, “Is the path I’m on the path I TRULY want?” “Is it going to make me into the person I am going to be, is it going to give me the fulfillment I want in my life?” (56:06) The nagging voice in your head is there for a reason and giving you the permission you need to change your mind and your life! Have you ever questioned whether your life has a purpose? Whether you're living that purpose? Maybe you just feel lost and envy those you see who seem to be so fulfilled by their "mission" in life. In this episode, I dive into a subject that seems to paralyze a lot of young people--myself included. Discovering your life's purpose is more complex than dedicating your life to a cause or making a difference. It can be one thing or many. I'm about to explore the messy, beautiful journey that is finding one's life purpose and figuring out how to start living it! SHOWNOTES (1:30) Your life’s purpose is something you are called to do! (2:10) Some people get so caught up in their every day, especially the 9-5 job that they just feel like their life doesn’t have a purpose to it. (2:45) I think young people put too much pressure on themselves and look at what other people are doing and they (we) feel intimidated by that. (4:07) I believe people have more than one purpose on this earth. (5:45) Observations on Life Purposes (7:03) Your purpose isn’t supposed to paralyze you! (7:50) If you haven’t found your purpose yet, that is completely fine! (9:46) Use your mundane time to focus on your purpose if you have found it and are lacking the time to put into it! (11:00) Sometimes having many different purposes can be difficult to blend all your purposes together. Main points: It is totally okay if you have not found your life’s purpose yet! If you have multiple purposes that is fine! It’s totally fine if your purpose does not live up to someone else’s purpose--don’t compare! In tonight’s podcast Gareth interrogates James over the Windows Phone 7 event. Andy gets all gushy about his new phone whilst getting angry at the evil doers at T-Mobile and Orange. We podcastees are bone idle! So, I thought I'd send you a few words of support (and constructive criticism).I listen to a lot of technology podcasts - I'm a gardener, with plenty of time to myself - and yours is without a doubt the best one covering the mobile market. You clearly know the devices down to their nuts and bolts and Andy adds a soupcon of eccentric geekiness and developer knowhow - I often don't know what he's talking about, but it sounds impressive.I would imagine that, at some time, you'd like to get a couple of advertisers on board and this is where the constructive criticism comes in. I'm a big fan of playground humour, but yours sometimes goes a bit far for the corporate suits. Animal sex and inflatable sex dolls might make them a little nervous about having their product appear on the same page, so to speak. Having said that, your edginess adds to the flavour of the podcast so you wouldn't want to lose it completely. I only say all this because I think you deserve to succeed and your content is certainly better than established podcasts like Dialed In and not far off the the quality of Twit.tv!Keep up the good work!Your committed listener (with or without the sex doll)Marc Bit shocked people aren't sending in tonnes of questions since you are the only UK podcast worth listening too. I'm really looking forward to the Windows Phone 7 announcements hopefully you'll be covering them soon but what is the deal with cut and paste?!?James is mad to have bought the San Francisco. Why when you have a 9700 AND and iPhone 4?Matt was missing last week I was worried he was eaten by the tractor.Gareth didn't mention Archos last week. Shock!Andy has so many toys I imagine he'll have an fully automated rubber companion soon.
