Player 1 vs The World's StrangeCast is back for our first episode of March, with Adnan and Adam (who is 'being held against his will') talking all things Don't Nod Entertainment, Deck Nine and, of course, Square Enix's Life Is Strange franchise. For this episode of StrangeCast, Adnan and Adam celebrate the sixth anniversary of Life Is Strange: Before the Storm's much-beloved Farewell DLC episode. The StrangeCast hosts also turn their attention to Jusant, which won Best Sound Design at the 2024 Pegasus. Additionally, Jusant received a nomination for New Intellectual Property at the BAFTA Games Awards. Adnan and Adam also sit down to discuss the French union SJTV and its allegations against Don't Nod over staff welfare, with the Life Is Strange developer also responding to the claims made. Speaking of Don't Nod, we also flag that Benoit Gisbert Mora has stepped down from his role as deputy general manager at the French-based developer and publisher. Finally, our main topic is none other than the sad news that Life Is Strange: True Colors studio Deck Nine has been forced to lay off some of its staff amid a brutal period for developers in the gaming industry. StrangeCast can be accessed on the following podcast services (among many others!) below.

Make sure you're wearing hearing protection for this latest episode of TDBR, because we're talking about 2019's Sound of Metal, the 2019 slice of life drama directed by Darius Marder which follows a metal drummer coping with hearing loss. This film was a huge hit at the Academy Awards, managing to nab both Best Sound Design and Best Editing, plus a few nominations for acting. It stars Riz Ahmed, Paul Raci, and Olivia Cooke. Believe us when we say that this film comes across as a horror movie to musicians like ourselves - wear earplugs at concerts people! We briefly discuss how much emotional resonance can carry a film, the fear of losing something you take for granted, and why a Miller Lite brewery is required to fulfill the needs of Ohio alone. Thanks for listening guys! Our next couple of episodes will be on Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood', and the television series 'Better Call Saul'.
Transcript here! Hello friends of Echoes (In) Between! A few weeks ago, we had the honor of participating in the first ever Phonic Fiction Fest! Participants in this festival were required to form teams and then make a self contained horror short in one of three assigned sub-genres, which had to include a specific line of dialogue and a specific sound effect. Our assigned genre was Horror Noir, so we decided to take things in a Cyberpunk direction, ala Blade Runner, and Justice Served is the result. Our amazing team mates included Emily Inkpen, co-creator of The Dex Legacy, AMC, creator of The Vesta Clinic, and Loretta Chang, an amazingly talented voice artist. The story was conceived of by Jess and Bronson, with help from AMC. Jess then wrote the script in 3 hours, sent it off to everyone for their vocal performances, and then edited the dialogue. Then it was Bronson's turn to put his sound and music wizardry into it and bring it to life before the 48 hour deadline expired! We were so honored to have been voted Best Horror Noir along with Best Sound Design and Best Original SFX. We also placed second in Acting, Story, Original Music, and Best Overall (for the first place winner in those categories, check out our friends at Packhowl/The Madness of Chartrulean's stellar entry, Emet). If you want to hear all 25 entries, make sure to head over to the Phonic Fiction Fest feed. There's so much brilliance there that it's hard to believe everyone was able to churn out these masterpieces in only 48 hours! Please enjoy this extra bit of spookiness as a Halloween treat! We'll be back with the trick later today... stay tuned.
[REBROADCAST FROM OCTOBER 21, 2021] The British musical “Six” was set to open in March 2020… and then Broadway was shut down. Now the pop musical, which tells the story of the six wives of King Henry VIII, has finally opened. Stars Brittney Mack, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele join us to discuss the show, on now at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. "Six" is nominated at the Tony Awards this Sunday for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations.
[REBROADCAST FROM JANUARY 21, 2022] The new Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's 1970 Tony Award-winning musical "Company" switches the gender of many of the characters, including main character Bobbie, played by Tony Award-winner Katrina Lenk, and her best friend Jamie, now a gay man played by Matt Doyle. Lenk and Doyle join us to discuss the revival, which tells the story of a single woman turning 35, and contemplating whether it's time to get married. "Company" is nominated at the Tony Awards this Sunday for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (for Matt Doyle), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (for Jennifer Simard and Patti Lupone), Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.
A wisecracking sound designer once said, "The audience doesn't leave humming the lights." Whoever said it, they have a point. That's why this week's episode dedicated to the rock musical THE WHO'S TOMMY features a guest with one of the most important jobs in musical theatre! But Cricket Myers is no ordinary sound designer. She was also the first woman to ever be Tony nominated for "Best Sound Design of a Play." Together, Cricket and Jeff begin our official Tony Award festivities by discussing her career, how sound technology might be behind an important evolution in musicals, and how this rock opera carries incredibly profound themes within its iconic guitar riffs. Welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the only movie podcast that waits over a year after recording to release an episode! Well, 2018 is almost over and I still have 13 episodes of @ Movies recorded in 2017 I still haven't released, so let's see if I can get at least some of those out before the year is up. We're starting off with a triple threat of British-based films this week as LumRanmaYasha and VLordGTZ talk about Dunkirk, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Victoria & Abdul. Yes, literally the only reason these reviews are paired together in this episode is that they are all about British people and characters so I thought I'd lump them together. Still, as tenuous the thread connecting these films is, each review is quite a lot of fun with some great jokes throughout, so I'll think you'll have a good time! Did we think Dunkirk deserved to win Best Sound Design at the Oscars? Was Kingsman: The Golden Circle really that bad a sequel? Was Victoria & Abdul a disgustingly offensive whitewashing of history catering to the romantic fetishes of middle-aged white women? The Mavericks answer these question and more in this stacked episode of @ Movies! Jolly good gov'na! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Intro 02:48 - Dunkirk 32:54 - Kingsman: The Golden Circle 1:03:36 - Victoria & Abdul 1:22:17 - Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. Starbucks shuts 300 more stores... Thousands of baristas are to lose their jobs as Starbucks shuts stores to cope with dwindling sales of lattes, cappuccinos and frappuccinos as cash-strapped consumers lose their thirst for coffee. The Seattle-based chain tonight revealed a 70% slump in quarterly profits to $64.3m and announced that it intends to shed 6,700 employees this year. It is closing 300 stores, two thirds of which will be in the US, on top of 660 shutdowns last year. As the global economy turns sour, appetite for Starbucks' premium-priced drinks appears to be waning. Like-for-like sales fell by 10% at American stores and dropped by 3% elsewhere in the world - including a decline in the UK during the three months to December. Starbucks' chief executive, Howard Schultz, is joining in the belt-tightening by asking the company's board to cut his basic salary from $1.2m to $10,000. Schultz, 55, dropped off Forbes' list of the world's billionaires last year as the value of his stake in Starbucks plunged. In a statement, Schultz blamed the "weakening global consumer environment" for Starbucks' problems. He said the company was following a "well developed plan to strengthen our business through more efficient operations and by preserving the fundamental strengths and values of our brand". Analysts say Starbucks' market has been eroded by improved coffee offerings at fast-food stores such as McDonald's which typically charge much lower prices. Starbucks has 16,875 stores globally. It once boasted of an ambition to have 20,000 outlets in the US and a further 20,000 overseas, although expansion plans have since been radically scaled back.
