And now for something completely different — we have an interview with my old pal from London semester (and midwest rock aficionado), Erin! Here's my much-anticipated interview with NYC DJ extraordinaire Dan Selzer (@newyorkendless) a/k/a Karen O.'s “friend Dan from Oberlin” about his role as a DJ in the so-called #indiesleaze movement and what the scene was *actually* like in reality. MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM is a 2022 doc based on the book of the same name by Lizzy Goodman. Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, this look at '00s nostalgia focuses on a cluster of rock bands coming out of New York and Brooklyn at the beginning of the George H.W. Bush era. These bands that went on to define this scene were The Moldy Peaches, The Strokes, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, and TV On the Radio - or so this film would have us believe. It's inarguable that this cluster of musicians made a lasting impact on music culture and are among the most successful acts still touring. The doc digs in, but is there much dirt to unveil? Marleah and James talk about seeing The Rapture (with C R I C K E T S and Wah Together) at Music Hall of Williamsburg on 12-3-19…with special guest, Drake! Marleah *finally* gets to indulge in some dance punk, the flip side of her other favorite genre, big beat (see episode #13), and dubs Gabriel Andruzzi the Lindsay Stirling of The Cowbell. James hits you with tons of fun facts about the background of the band and the culture they came up in, and he really should’ve been there in NYC, 2003. Drake gives practical (and beauty-queen-worthy, in terms of its diplomacy) advice on concertgoer etiquette, and will never again eat vegan pizza. I'm trying a new thing here too. This series of episodes will be about particular subjects and their influence on me. This is basically an excuse to post speeches and rants that have been circling in my mind for a while, but they feel too long to post on the end of an interview episode. I also hope it might help to bring fans of each artist to the podcast too, as I know I love listening to people talk about the artists that interest me, if only to find out if we love the same things about them. This isn't an encylopaedic re-telling of the story of The Strokes, there are better placest go for that (especially the book Meet Me In The Bathroom by Lizzy Goodman), but this a (hopefully coherent) look at my personal history with My Favourite Band: The Strokes. Although, if I'm honest, I can't remember when I actually started listening to them or which album came first for me. But I hope that doesn't get in the way of you enjoying this episode. Thank you for listening, let me know what you think, and I'll catch you on the next one. -- Take Care --

We listened to Turn on the Bright Lights from Interpol. Their first record released in 2002 could lazily be compared to Joy Division...we try hard not to do that but here we are and we just did. An ode to NYC which remains true - the subway IS a porno and the pavements are a mess. An intersection between indie dance rock, post punk revival, dream pop and garage according to some mixed up wiki and it's pointless to shove this into music genres. NYC was a weird time for music in this era and, "Meet Me In the Bathroom" from Lizzy Goodman is a great record of an ultimately wasted opportunity by a lot of talented bands. Rock journalist and author of the definitive oral history of the New York rock revival ‘Meet Me in the Bathroom', Lizzy Goodman, joins me to talk about one of the seminal albums of that era - the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut LP 'Fever to Tell'. We talk about why Karen O is the truest rock star of her era, what makes 'Maps' such a special song and how it influenced mainstream pop, the contrast between the band's offstage awkwardness and their high-octane music, why being a woman can't be politically neutral in rock and the world in general, why it's silly to pretend clothes don't matter and why Lorde made Lizzy excited about the next wave of New York music. Plus we delve into the writing process of 'Meet Me in the Bathroom', 2017's best music book, and why she will never undertake a similar project again. My Favorite Album is a podcast on the impact great music has on our lives. Each episode features a guest on their favorite album of all time - why they love it, their history with the album and how it's influenced them. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. Marc completely missed the era of music that writer Lizzy Goodman chronicles in her book 'Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011.' But as Lizzy explains to Marc, that era is just one chapter in the larger New York cultural story, a story that both Lizzy and Marc found themselves rushing to be a part of after growing up in New Mexico. Plus, comedian Dana Gould stops by to talk about his new album, his TV show Stan Against Evil, and Don Rickles. James and Chris trace their diverse and sometimes confusing musical roots before speaking with author Lizzy Goodman. Goodman's new book, Meet Me in The Bathroom, chronicles the famed pre-internet rock boom of the early-2000s in New York City. Lizzy recounts the six-year writing process, gives her take on The Strokes vs. Ryan Adams, and reveals the most underrated band from a very over-hyped era. Sarah Lewitinn's career has taken from writer to manager to DJ, self-described 'queen of beneficient debauchery' and the once and future 'Ultragrrl'. In a personal and emotionally honest conversation, Sarah makes the case for Interpol's 'Our Love to Admire' as the band's best album and the deep, slow-burning relationship she has had with it. We talk about the efforts she's made to keep her personal distance from the members of Interpol, the legend and reality of Carlos D, and how the album feels like the closing chapter on an era of her New York life. If you haven't yet, I recommend reading Lizzy Goodman's amazing oral history of the 2000s NYC rock scene 'Meet Me in the Bathroom', in which Sarah features, and listening to my recent podcast with Lizzy. On Friday, LCD Soundsystem released its "comeback" album, "American Dream." My feelings on it are mixed — I love the music, but James Murphy can be a prickly, even annoying presence. To get to the bottom of LCD Soundsystem, I called up someone who knows a lot more about James Murphy than I do, author and critic Lizzy Goodman, whose recent book "Meet Me In The Bathroom" is an oral history of the NYC rock scene in the '00s. We talked about Murphy's background as a failed indie musician who found fame in his 30s by co-founding DFA Records, refashioning himself as a skilled architect of dance-rock records. We also cover Murphy's decision to revive LCD Soundsystem, and how "American Dream" fits with the rest of the band's catalogue.

Rock journalist and author of the definitive oral history of the New York rock revival 'Meet Me in the Bathroom', Lizzy Goodman, joins me to talk about one of the seminal albums of that era - the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut LP 'Fever to Tell'. We talk about why Karen O is the truest rock star of her era, what makes 'Maps' such a special song and how it influenced mainstream pop, the contrast between the band's offstage awkwardness and their high-octane music, why being a woman can't be politically neutral in rock and the world in general, why it's silly to pretend clothes don't matter and why Lorde made her excited about the next wave of New York music. Plus we delve into the writing process of 'Meet Me in the Bathroom', 2017's best music book, and why she will never undertake a similar project again.
