On today's episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with four members of the contemporary New York City music scene: manager Ryan Gentles, singer-songwriter Bec Lauder of Bec Lauder & The Noise, and frontman Zane Acord and guitarist Jack Bradley of The Thing. The first conversation is with Ryan, who explores his time managing The Strokes and several other bands of the “indie sleaze” era. Ryan talks about securing The Strokes' record deal and helping craft the band's image. He also discusses the current state of the music business and the role played by social media in discovering new bands. Next, Scott talks with Bec about her career beginnings, favorite spots in NYC, and her top 5 NYC artists of the 2000s. Finally, Scott is joined by Zane and Jack of The Thing, an up-and-coming four-piece rock band, who talk about their musical influences, the modern touring industry, and how radio continues to play a role in bringing artists widespread exposure. This episode is sponsored by Magic Mind! This week on Name 3 Songs… ⚡ Jenna's in NYC! In recent months Sara's been digging into New York City's alternative rock scene, which just might be at the precipice of Meet Me In The Bathroom 2.0. Since we're both in the big apple, we've been experiencing music nightlife together, and want to bring you all in on the journey. Two bands in particular that we've seen: The Gasoline at Bowery Electric and Pan Arcadia at Mercury Lounge.  ⚡  Then we're revisiting “Reclaiming 30: A Pop Star Renaissance” featuring guest journalist Hannah Ewens. At some point, the patriarchy decided that being a 30-year-old woman meant you were past your prime. For pop music fans, it meant you had no music left to relate to, while pop music stars were shunned from the spotlight. Tabloids called them washed up, and questioned their choices, hating them whether they listened to their biological clock or not. We're joined by a long time fave of the pod Hannah Ewens to discuss how millennial women are reclaiming turning 30 and viewing it as more of a renaissance age rather than an expiration date. Join us for a look into how this generation of 30 year olds has grasped it as a second coming of age & made this big ole age feel like the start of something new. Enjoy this episode? In the early aughts, Manhattan became a breeding ground for the post-punk revival when bands like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Interpol ushered in a new era of indie rock. On today's episode of "Sounding Out with Izzy," I am joined by my good friend Hollye Bynum, the lead singer of Razor Braids, to revisit this iconic era of rock and roll by sharing our thoughts on the recently released 'Meet Me In The Bathroom' documentary. Discover bonus eps, playlists, and more on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents✨ MORE ABOUT RAZOR BRAIDS ✨Razor Braids is a queer, all-female/non-binary rock band from Brooklyn combining the vulnerable self-awareness of indie rock with dynamic instrumentation anchored in a 90s alternative ethos. Through soaring harmonies and a driving rhythm section, the band has honed a magnetic sound that is a testament to the healing power and catharsis of community. Following their warmly-received debut album 'I Could Cry Right Now If You Wanted Me To,' the band released two singles in Spring 2022, weaved together during the pandemic and bringing to life the memories – from terrible parties to secret make-out spots – that bubble to the surface when the world has been forced to a halt. ✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH RAZOR BRAIDS ✨Tour Tickets: https://www.razorbraids.com/tourWeb: https://www.razorbraids.com/homeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/razorbraids/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/razorbraids/Twitter: https://twitter.com/RazorBraidsTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@razorbraids✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIgWebsite: https://agrrrlstwosoundcents.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/Twitter: https://twitter.com/grrrlsoundcents

MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM is a 2022 doc based on the book of the same name by Lizzy Goodman. Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, this look at '00s nostalgia focuses on a cluster of rock bands coming out of New York and Brooklyn at the beginning of the George H.W. Bush era. These bands that went on to define this scene were The Moldy Peaches, The Strokes, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, and TV On the Radio - or so this film would have us believe. It's inarguable that this cluster of musicians made a lasting impact on music culture and are among the most successful acts still touring. The doc digs in, but is there much dirt to unveil? When a comic book movie gets broken down by four people who actually read comic books, one particular Movie Master is so riveted by "Wakanda Forever" that he kicks off the episode with a 7-minute soliloquy before so much as making introductions of the other three. The gang then discusses the film in granular detail, speculates on what it would have been with Chadwick Boseman, has feelings on Namor, and realizes that the film dunks firmly and deftly on the Aquaman, Star Wars (prequel trilogy), and Avatar mega-franchises. The soliloquies continue into "Tár," where another Movie Master delves into some of the external happenstance that makes the lore of the movie even cooler than it already is on its face. As an exercise, the orator of the "Wakanda Forever" soliloquy attempts to pick apart "Tár" (which will surely be in the conversation during this year's Good Movie™ celebration), but gets somewhat womansplained in the process. Symbology and conspiracies are explored before Dylen's Notes gets an official bumper. From there, it's off to the isles for "The Banshees Of Inisherin," one of the freshest and most memorable films of 2022, before finally hitting a clunker (in execution only): the ponderous decision to reissue "Dawn Of The Dead" in indecipherable 3-D. The episode wraps with a rundown on "Meet Me In The Bathroom," a one-off engagement documentary detailing the early 00's New York City rock scene that spawned The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more. • https://www.instagram.com/officialmoviemasters/ • https://anchor.fm/rmmu --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rmmu/support

New York City in the early aughts became a hotbed for indie artists when bands like The Strokes, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more suddenly ignited a new era of indie rock. Plus, they review a new album by another early aughts band, Phoenix, who just dropped their first LP in five years, Alpha Zulu (49:23). When it comes to music news this week, the biggest story comes from... Taco Bell? I'm trying a new thing here too. This series of episodes will be about particular subjects and their influence on me. This is basically an excuse to post speeches and rants that have been circling in my mind for a while, but they feel too long to post on the end of an interview episode. I also hope it might help to bring fans of each artist to the podcast too, as I know I love listening to people talk about the artists that interest me, if only to find out if we love the same things about them. This isn't an encylopaedic re-telling of the story of The Strokes, there are better placest go for that (especially the book Meet Me In The Bathroom by Lizzy Goodman), but this a (hopefully coherent) look at my personal history with My Favourite Band: The Strokes. Although, if I'm honest, I can't remember when I actually started listening to them or which album came first for me. But I hope that doesn't get in the way of you enjoying this episode. To get to the bottom of LCD Soundsystem, I called up someone who knows a lot more about James Murphy than I do, author and critic Lizzy Goodman, whose recent book "Meet Me In The Bathroom" is an oral history of the NYC rock scene in the '00s. We talked about Murphy's background as a failed indie musician who found fame in his 30s by co-founding DFA Records, refashioning himself as a skilled architect of dance-rock records. We also cover Murphy's decision to revive LCD Soundsystem, and how "American Dream" fits with the rest of the band's catalogue.

No book about rock music in 2017 has generated more conversation than Lizzy Goodman's Meet Me In The Bathroom, a wildly entertaining and unrepentantly gossipy oral history of the New York City music scene from 2001 to 2011. Among the dozens of interview subjects in Goodman's book is Sean Tillmann, a.k.a. Har Mar Superstar, the tongue-in-cheek R&B singer who became a tour mate and confidante for many of the scene's kingpins, including Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Paul Banks of Interpol, and Jack White. Tillmann's unique perspective — he was an insider with just enough perspective to take note of the party-addled insanity that many of those bands were living in — comes in handy in Meet Me In The Bathroom, particularly when it comes to funny/sad backstage anecdotes that helps to humanize the book's subjects. Because I loved his stories, and knew him a bit as a fellow resident of the Minneapolis area, I invited Tillmann on the podcast to talk about Meet Me In The Bathroom and his memories of the era. He did not disappoint.
