POPULARITY
Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Ear to the Street”(1993), “Gamers”(1996);诗人气质的 Mystic 在 Digital Underground 1998 年专辑“Who Got the Gravy?”中首次亮相,个人首张 “Cuts For Luck and Scars For Freedom” 发行于 2001 年,在其中真诚地剖析了很多深刻内容,让关于耻辱的话题在音乐中有表达的空间,制作人有 Zion I 的 Amp Live,Hieroglyphics 的 A-Plus, 以及 Shock G;街头狠大姐,有着 female player 气质的 Marvaless 和 Passion,推荐专辑: “Ghetto Blues”(1994) by Marvaless, “Baller's Lady”(1996) by Passion;1980s 末短暂出现的 Kimmie Fresh,敢于挑战当时代表男性皮条音乐的 Too Short,重写了女性视角的 “The Real Freaky Tales”,当然 Too Short 作为一名虚怀若谷有格局的老皮条客,与 Kimmie 也建立了友谊;90s-00s 时代的 Bay Area 地区还有很多女性 rapper 由于各种原因都没有留下作品,甚至在时代发展中销声匿迹毫无记录,只有在少数历史报道中我们会得知一些名字,但在本地社区中一直是受人尊敬的存在;Neo Soul 歌手 Goapele 的地下场景名作 “Even Closer”(2002)05. 影响极其深远的 Bay Area Underground Hip HopHieroglyphics 大家族出品质量稳定,尤其是 “3rd Eye Vision”(1998), “Full Circle”(2003) ,创始人 Del The Funky Homosapien 也是深受 P-Funk 影响的文化传承者,1991 年首张个人专辑 “I Wish My Brother George was Here”是明显的 P-Funk 致敬,其他作品另类气质独特也十分推荐:”Future Development”(1997), “Both Side of Brain”(1999);Del 与 Dan the Automator, DJ Kid Koala 的三人组合 Deltron 3030 同名专辑是一张制作与概念都水平很高的地下另类名作;Souls of Mischief 的 Hip Hop 历史教科书级别作品 “93 'til Infinity”,同名歌曲是 Bay Area 地下最具代表性的大名曲,它所传达的时代情绪和制作思路都令人叫绝;大家族中成员的个人作品都很推荐,Opio, A-Plus, Casual, Pep Love 没有难听的;来自 Sacramento 的 Blackalious 在我们之前的“Underground”话题单集中提到过,所属的团体 Quannum Projects 风格另类,元素丰富;06. Episode playlist:The Conscious Daughters - “Somethin To Ride To (Fonky Expedition)”Mystic - “Neptune's Jewels”Passion - “Where I'm From”Kimmie Fresh and The People - “The Real Freaky Tales The Girl Story”Marvaless - “Bring The Bomb”Del the Funky Homosapien - “Mistadobalina”Deltron 3030 - “Mastermind”Souls of Mischief - “93 'til Infinity”Hieroglyphics ft. 30 years after their debut, Souls of Mischief are proving that the title of their song "93 'Til Infinity" is true. Currently, they are in the middle of a world tour spanning over 100 dates, selling out shows around the globe, winning over young fans through streaming, and demonstrating a longevity that is rarely seen in rap music. This exclusive interview with all 4 members of Souls - A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai - touches on their upbringing in East Oakland, their early days recording with Del the Funky Homosapien, traveling to LA as teenagers to build with Ice Cube, Sir Jinx and Eazy-E, and the ups and downs of signing to a major label. As members of the Hieroglyphics collective along with Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and DJ Toure, Souls and their comrades have been successful independent artists since the 90s. They also touch on how they define success for themselves, their pursuit of other careers outside of music, and how their friendship has helped them stick together to inspire new generations through music year after year. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, bilingual Emcee/Rapper Deuce Eclipse and co-founder/vocalist of Bang Data, draws influence from both his Nicaraguan heritage as well as the culture of Hip-Hop he grew up with in the United States. At nine, he began rapping with a middle school friend, the two adopting the names Ace Moon and Deuce Eclipse, which he carries with respect to this day. He toured the world alongside one of his best friends the late Zumbi as an accompanying voice to Zion I Crew and also acquired an extensive international and local list of collaborations including Mega Banton, Eva Ayllon, Pep Love, Louie Culture, Chico Trujillo, Asdru of Ozomatli, The Grouch & Eli, and more. He has released a variety of albums some of which have been featured on TV shows, commercials, and movies most notably the song ‘Bang Data' on AMC's show Breaking Bad. Deuce's true talent will continue to be his ability to paint a vivid picture of where we are as a society by weaving compelling personal stories into his rhymes. In episode 39 I talk to comedian Brian Babylon about his love for the Hieroglyphics crew and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, an American rapper. He began his career writing lyrics for Ice Cube's group Da Lench Mob. In 1991, with the help of Ice Cube, Del released his first solo album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, at the age of 18. The album was a commercial success largely due to the popularity of the hit single "Mistadobalina". Ultimately Del, who was not pleased with the limited musical range of the album, severed his production-artist relationship with Ice Cube for his next album, No Need for Alarm. No Need for Alarm saw the introduction of the Oakland clique Hieroglyphics, whose original members included Souls of Mischief (Opio, A-Plus, Phesto and Tajai), Casual, Pep Love, Del, and producer Domino. No Need for Alarm helped to expose both the regional Oakland sound of hip hop, as well as the freestyle based, "golden era 90s" style of hip hop being expanded at the time.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents The Architect interview session! We’re longtime fans (when we say longtime we mean the 90s) of this Bay Area producer here at Southern Vangard Radio and have been playing numerous joints he’s been behind the boards on since the show started. When we bumped into him at A3C last year alongside Opio and Pep Love, we had no idea he was about to wrap up 2017 with a boat load of new material, with an eye on doing the same in 2018. We hear about his new work with Byrd Land, Cochise & Killa Kali, his outlook on the game today and working new young gunners like Kung Fuu. We also get into some DEEP Bay Area hip-hop history, including early days in Milpitas, CA with the one and only Charizma (RIP) & Peanut Butter Wolf, his first big break with Coolio and why folks made pilgrimages to The Architect's house when he scored his first sampler. The train don’t stop ya’ll, so get on board, sit back, press play and tune in to that #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #WORLDWIDE Recorded live January 29, 2018 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks
BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 119! Mr. Meeks was fired up this week - and it shows. Perhaps one of the more entertaining mix shows we’ve done in a while if we do say so ourselves. More of that raw this week folks, a lot of great music out if you didn’t already know. We also got the ultra exclusive on the new Lucid Logic LP that drops at the end of June - Illogic and Lucid Optics make up the duo - and we just so happen to have them for our interview session this week. Snippets of the interview are at the end of this weeks mix - so hit play, let out a little honky tonk yelp and remember it’s ALWAYS #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #WORLDWIDE Recorded live May 22, 2017 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks Inst. beds by DJ Rhettmatic "Honey Dew" - Lucid Logic (Illogic & Lucid Optics) "Find A Way" - Lucid Logic (Illogic & Lucid Optics) "Clones & Robots" - Lucid Logic (Illogic & Lucid Optics) "Revolution" - Lucid Logic (Illogic & Lucid Optics) "Vampires & Inchworm" - Lucid Logic (Illogic & Lucid Optics) "Neva Left" - Snoop Dogg "Olympics" - Doppelgangaz "Where We From" - DJ Modesty feat Neek The Exotic, Satchel Page & Dinco D (Leaders Of The New School) "With the Illest" - DJ Rhettmatic feat. BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 096! Hey folks, we’re back! After a much needed week off to be with family and friends over the holiday, it’s back to business here at Southern Vangard Radio. Lots of new joints since our last mix show, which means guaranteed heat! On top of that, we keep that twice a week realness going with an interview this Thursday from Asheru! No time for snippets this week as we recorded on Monday night and Doe just didn’t have the time to get them together, and we didn’t want to delay any longer.
