Manish Vyas: India, its Paths, Traditions, Yoga, Music, Mantra, Spirituality

The tradition of Mantra is Mantra-Chanting, what is known as Mantra Japa, and Manish explains how to use it in "listening-meditation," which can be a very powerful technique to soothe the mind, remain attentive and integrate the energy within.Mostly, as we know, we live on the level of 'body and mind' and most of the energy goes into dealing with issues on these fields. So if Mantra is used in the right way, it has the capacity to take us beyond the physicality and the mental planes, to come in contact with the real being. Here is where the potential of 'mantra listening' comes in.If we observe ourselves, we can see that our whole struggle in our outer life is to 'become something' and that is very, very exhausting. A meditation technique using Mantra can simply bring us into a space of "just-being" and that's the highest outcome of Mantra meditation technique, involving energy awakening, energy rising and energy settling.

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 346: Nāda Yoga with Rishima Bahadoorsingh   Description: Yoga is not just about asana - sound is also an important part of yoga, and this is called Nāda Yoga. Rishima Bahadoorsingh is a yoga teacher who focuses on teaching this element of yoga and she shares her insights about Nāda Yoga in this episode.   Rishima has been immersed in the tradition of yoga since birth, practicing it as a way of life in her family. She began singing spiritual Indian songs in the temple traditions of bhajans, kirtan and other devotional styles at a young age and also studied classical Raga. In 2016, she found a deep with Nāda Yoga—the Yoga of Sound. Rishima teaches locally and internationally online in Spanish and English, and her goal as a teacher is to make the intricacies and beauty of classical Raga and traditional bhajans accessible to all, and to spark love within ourselves through sound.    Rishima explains the three Nāda Yoga that she practices and teaches - Mantra, Raga and Kirtan/Bhajan. She talks about the differences between mantras and affirmations, how Sanskrit ties into to Nāda Yoga, what Raga is and how it is useful in meditation. Rishima also addresses some common questions like if you need to know Sanskrit to practice Nāda Yoga, how to deal with people who are uncomfortable with chanting or singing in Sanskrit (or other languages), and where to start learning about Nāda Yoga.   Key Takeaways: [2:56] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Rishima Bahadoorsingh [6:01] What does Rishima do and who does she do it for? [6:45] Why does Rishima say that she is not a yoga teacher? [8:10] There are many ways to practice yoga that do not involve physical movement. [9:17] What are the three parts that make up Nāda Yoga? [12:14] What's the difference between a mantra and an affirmation? [15:18] Rishima clarifies that mantras within the Yogic tradition would most likely be in Sanskrit. [16:35] The second element of Nāda Yoga is Raga. Rishima shares some examples of what it is and how it is used. [19:57] Raga is an excellent tool for meditation. [22:19] Rishima explains a little more about the silence needed for meditation. [23:51] Shannon pops in with a message about OfferingTree. [25:26] Listening to the sounds can be just as powerful as singing or sounding them. [27:20] The third part of Nāda Yoga is Bhajan or Kirtan. [28:32] Some people may feel uncomfortable with Sanskrit or a different language. [31:46] Where can yoga teachers start learning about Nāda Yoga if they have never experienced it or learned about it before? [34:49] Where can yoga teachers learn more from Rishima? [35:53] Rishima shares some closing thoughts on Nāda Yoga. [37:27] Rishima does Nāda Yoga in Spanish and English! Shaking his head, he reiterated, "Everything is achieved."-Maharajji "Chanting is the means of attaining everything. Through chanting, you are purified on the inside. Through chanting, love arises. If love arises, it means that you have attained God, because God's true nature is love. You sing His name so that love will arise. No good deed can equal chanting. Tulsidas said that by chanting the Name of God everything becomes pure and auspicious."-Muktananda "From the fruits of his mouth a man fills his stomach, And from the fruits of his lips he will fill himself to the full.Life and death are in the hand of a tongue, And those who rule over it will eat thefruits thereof."-Proverbs 18: 20-21CHALLENGE RULESEach day (beginning 4/26):1. Wake up an hour earlier to chant (think of it like your actual job that will pay you actual dollars) at least 12 rounds on your mala/prayer beads while hearing the words clearly. Hear the Names of God, even though your mind will be split and doing/thinking about other things. Keep bringing your attention back to the sound of the Name. That's all. Keep coming back to the Sound on your tongue and silence in your head. 2. Chant your last 4 rounds in the evening before bed. Throughout the day, allow your attention to be directed toward the mantra which will still be running in the background-- let It hangout in the foreground as you run errands, eat, drive, shower, etc. When you're home doing it formally, you can chant it just barely audibly, or loudly if you choose, but while out, you can keep it going silently within, or just allow your lips to move slightly with no sound. And that's it! We're starting with a week so you can 'try it on', but if you keep it up for at least 6 months, you'll drastically change your entire life for the better!  Support the show

What do the Buddhist teachers say about doggie and kitty Buddha Dharma? Did Buddha teach that Dogs and cats have Buddha Nature, just like humans? How can you help your companion meet the Dharma in daily life? How can we help when our companions are passing from this life? Many Mahayana meditations, sadhanas and prayers use language such as “all beings have been our mothers…” — a constant reminder that every being, even the insect we step on by accident, is our family. Ultimately, Mahayana Buddhists accept that humans and animals are interconnected as a single family — in the Oneness of the Universe.Clearly, your doggie, kitty, hamster, budgie and extended animal companions all have both Buddha Nature and karma. In what ways does this change our relationship to our beloved companions?Lama Zopa Rinpoche, in a teaching on “animals in everyday life” said, “There is a story when Buddha gave teachings to 500 swans in the field and the next life they were born as human beings, became monks, and they all became Arya beings, able to achieve the cessation of suffering and the true path. So the result is unbelievable, just by hearing Dharma words.” This teaching illustrates that all animals have Buddha Nature. The swans, in just one life cycle, became humans, monks, and ultimately Aryas. Most Buddhists are familiar with these stories. Yet, in real life, do we really treat our animal companions as fellow journeyers on the path to Enlightenment? If we did, we'd bring our pets meditation rooms and retreats. We'd acknowledge our companions are subject to Karma, just like us. This means that, as their friends, we need to be mindful of their actions, as much as our own, because they, too, have Buddha Nature. They, like the swans, can become Aryas (Enlightened Beings). When your doggy chases and kills a squirrel, you have to help him mitigate his unfortunate karma. When you kitty kills a blue jay, you have to take a measure of responsibility. PODCAST INCLUDES MEDICINE BUDDHA MANTRA FOR PETS SUNG BY THE AMAZING YOKO DHARmA. Support the show

However the multitude of texts (and their various translations) available can feel overwhelming and daunting to approach. In this episode, Chase Bossart shares his recommendations and expertise around some of the must-read yoga texts.   Chase Bossart is the Director of the Yoga Well Institute, an organization dedicated to yoga, meditation, and holistic health in the tradition of Viniyoga. Chase studied under the tutelage of TKV Desikachar, son of Krishnamacharya who is often described as the father of modern yoga.   Chase shares his insights on how to take the yoga sutras into challenging times, the three fundamental texts he suggests yoga teachers read, and why these are so important for yoga teachers as a foundation in their practice and their teaching. Chase also explains why having a teacher to guide you in your study of the texts can be helpful, and whether yoga teachers need to know Sanskrit and all of the texts to practice or teach yoga. Shannon and Chase also discuss cultural appropriation, how and why yoga has changed so much in its practice in the East vs. West, and much more.   If you have ever wondered what texts you should read to deepen your knowledge of yoga and yoga philosophy, or how the teachings of yoga apply to our daily lives, this episode is for you.   Key Takeaways: [4:25] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Chase Bossart. We talked about the twenty -four syllables that are in Gayatri Mantra. We also discussed the origin of this mantra and who invoked it first and what that person used it for? Practically, Vishwamitra used it to become the universe himself, to have that constant connection with universal consciousness. We have right and left side of the brain. The left-brain is responsible for logic and calculations and also for chattering of the mind. The right brain on the other hand is for creativity, art, vision and foresight and so on. When you chant gayatri mantra, there are two channels in human body. There are three but physically you can only trace two. One is called ida nadi, also know as the lunar channel. The other one is called pingala nadi, also known as the solar channel. Solar channel regulates psychic heat in the body as well as the physical heat in the body. It is when you breathe through your right nostril. When you chant Gayatri mantra, it actually boosts your right brain. It is very good for strengthening the right side of the brain. Listen to this insightful discourse by Om Swami on the importance of understanding the science of chanting and sound to get the benefits from Gayatri Sadhana. The question is to explain the use of different types of malas for mantra japa. There are many types of chanting beads. The most common ones are tulsi, chandan and rudraksha. If you are chanting out of devotion, you can use any chanting beads. It makes little difference. If you are a vaishnava that means you pray to a form of Vishnu then often tulsi beads are recommended. If you are a shakta or a shaiva that means you pray to devi or shiva or any form of rudra then rudraksha are recommended. Chandan beads can be used anywhere. But in mantra sadhana and even in tantra sadhana, there are different types of chanting beads. Each one has a different impact, different energy, different feel and even different set of memories it brings to you when you use them. You can have chanting beads made from brass, copper, gold, pearls or gemstones. All those are used for different purposes. The chanting beads you need to use will depend upon the sadhana you are doing. The ultimate chanting beads is called Akshaya mala. Listen to this discourse to find out more on mantra chanting.
