Imagine the life of Jeannette Ciaramella as a finished puzzle with hundreds of pieces. The pieces are all connected and where they belong, forming a beautiful picture of her kindness, love, friendship, and family. When she disappeared, that puzzle was smashed, and the pieces were scattered around to every place she had ever stepped foot and distributed to every person to ever cross paths with her in any way. The pieces alone seem worthless until they are brought to light, shared, and collected to be put back together. I believe that some of you may hold those pieces to Jeannette's puzzle. There isn't a single piece of information out there about Jeannette that is too insignificant to share. You may know something that seems like nothing, you may know something that you assume everyone knows, you may know something that may not even have anything to do with Jeannette at first glance, but those pieces might just be the last few that investigators are still missing -and they need them in order to put this case back together. In this episode, we hear from Jeannette's boyfriend at the time of her disappearance – Marcus Lee, and we start from the beginning of where her puzzle all fell apart. On the first episode of our Level Up podcast in 2022, we've invited Marcus Lee, a promising Singaporean artist, songwriter, and mental health advocate, to join us as we dive deeper into the topic of artists' mental health. We've been a fan of his work ethic and how he's managed to keep the ball rolling as an independent musician for a while now, but we especially wanted to pick his brain on the importance of mental health for artists at every stage of the game. On the outside, Marcus seems to be the perfect poster boy for the local burgeoning Mandopop scene. Blessed with good looks and a sunny warm disposition, his comforting love songs and ballads have proved themselves great additions to our songbooks in recent years. Hence, there's no doubt why he's been labelled an artist to watch, even taking home the 'Artist of the Year (non-English)' award at 2021's SCAPE Youth Music Awards. Yet unlike previous generations of Mandopop stars who have chosen to adhere to the more conventional pop route, Marcus has chosen the path less trodden, choosing to release his debut album For You, I Can 為了你,我可以 independently and helming everything from the album's conceptualisation to its promotion, and even playing two sold-out shows...all during an unprecedented pandemic. Given Marcus' unique position in pulling all this off, and his passionate and vocal stance on mental health, I felt he was the perfect artist to interview as we continue our Mental Health topic on the Level Up Podcast, providing an artist's perspective on the nuanced issues and struggles that creatives face in this particular line of work. Tune in as we discuss topics such as investing in ones' mental health, self doubt in the face of creative competition, and of course the much-feared imposter syndrome all in this week's podcast! It’s no wonder why some say a breakup can be worse than bereavement. When someone leaves you because of death, they are gone forever, whereas, with an ex, they’re still alive when they leave. This makes it harder for those who have seen the end of their relationship grieve the loss as they are able to see and watch in pain as their exes move on without them. But for some, a break-up isn’t necessarily the end of a relationship. Those who choose to remain as friends still spend time and grow old together. Time heals all wounds, they’ll probably say. Which do you relate to? In this episode Hazelle, Germaine, Azura and our guest, singer-songwriter Marcus Lee, discuss reasons why you can or cannot stay friends with your ex; share their experience healing from breakups and answer why trust between partners is the most important aspect of a relationship. As is the case with one student, young lawyers who have not been a victim of sexual harassment and bullying are fast becoming the exception and not the rule. In an effort to address the culture of silence that exists around these experiences and to push the profession further towards eradicating both, a team of students has created an online platform designed for anonymous reporting. In this episode of The Protégé Podcast, host Naomi Neilson is joined by juris doctorate candidates Amer Nasr and Erica Giulione and bachelor of arts and law student Marcus Lee, three members behind online reporting platform Confidant. With help from two other students, Confidant could pave the way to a safer profession. Long before the Dyson Heydon findings in 2020 and possibly long after the most recent, harrowing reports in April, sexual harassment and bullying have been a plague on the profession made worse by a fear of coming forward. In this episode, the three members talk about how the platform could address this culture of silence by allowing victims to share their stories without fear of repercussion.  As part of the episode, all three students share why they think this app is so important to the profession today and how damaging the culture of silence has been to either their own personal experiences or those of their peers.  They also talk listeners through some of the other useful features, including options to take further action by consulting internal and external support systems. Victims may also be alerted when other users have reported the same person, which could give them all the confidence to come forward with their stories publicly.  Have a listen to the episode below!  If you have any questions about the episode or if there are any topics that you might want us to look into, please reach out – we would love to hear from you!  We're also always open to new guests so if you have an exciting story to tell, if you're standing out as a student or graduate, or if you can offer some tips for our young lawyers, get in touch.  You can reach us here: Emails: editor@lawyersweekly.com.au or naomi.neilson@momentummedia.com.au Socials: Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter or reach out to me directly here.

This week we had the chance to interview Lelia, who is a community activist and a part of the group Comunidad Colectiva, an immigrant rights group based in Charlotte NC. We got to talk about a lot of things in this interview, the work that they and other groups do with immigrant and undocumented communities, about the February ICE raids that got national attention, what effective rapid response can look like, and the challenging tension associated with both being anti state and being in the position of having to negotiate with police and sheriffs for safety reasons, plus many more topics. We wanted to mention something called 287(g) and give a bit of information for listeners who may not have heard of this before. 287(g) was a contract between local officials and ICE which essentially made police forces extensions of ICE, and also instituted deportation proceedings as part of run of the mill arrests. More is explained about this contract later on in the interview, but it gets mentioned fairly heavily before that time. You can keep updated on this group's work by hitting them up on Facebook and if you have a few dollars you'd like to throw them to recoup the costs associated with their rapid response network, their Venmo is @comunidad-colectiva. Next week on The Final Straw, stay tuned for an interview with a member of the Montreal based group Ni Frontiers Ni Prison (which is No Borders, No Prison) about fighting a proposed new migrant prison, decolonization, the rise of far right sentiment in so called Canada, and many associated topics, plus a possible other interview. Update on Kinetic Justice In a brief update to last week's interview on the hunger strike by Kinetic Justice of the Free Alabama Movement, we'd like to share the following news. On March 20th, Kinetic Justice Amun (aka Robert Earl Council) resumed his hunger strike as he was transferred briefly to segregation housing at Limestone prison, but ended his hunger strike within a few days and was transferred to general population at that prison. He can be written at the following address: Robert Earl Council #181418 28779 Nick Davis Rd Harvest, AL 35749 Consequently, 8 of the prisoners transferred with Kinetic in the middle of the night, began engaging in a hunger strike in response to their own incarceration in solitary. In response to the hunger strike, administration cut off water to the cells they were held in, giving them bottled water. The 8 prisoners ended their hunger strike on March 22nd, and administration claims they'll be transferred to general population in the Alabama prison system as they're not under investigation currently. Their names are as follows: Kotoni Tellis (#223155) Marcus Lee (#175056) Mario Avila (#259514) Corey Burroughs (#207639) Earl Taylor 3rd (#168616) Tyree Cochroan (#172306) Earl Manassa (#175099) Antonio Jackson (#246560) and they can be written at: Holman “Correctional” Facitily 1240 Ross Rd. This is about going beyond the legal necessities in terms of age discrimination and equal opportunities, and looking at the issue strategically. The CIPD’s Dianah Worman gives us a picture of the age profile of UK workers, and also talks through some of the results from recent CIPD research. We speak to Judy Greevy from HMRC about the organisation’s award-winning approach to age diversity, including workshops that address common misconceptions about younger and older workers. We also speak to Marcus Lee from Santander about the bank’s impressive endeavours to offer opportunities to young people, and also their focus on ‘re-careerers’ who might consider a move into banking later in life.
