Hey, you. Stop doom scrolling. You've landed where you belong. Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors return to Comic Book Couples Counseling with another Justice Warriors book, Vote Harder. And they're back just when we need them most, weeks away from a critical, very American election. As in the best romantic comedies, Swamp Cop and Officer Schitt are torn apart early on in Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. Bubble City embarks on its first-ever election, and it's doing something strange to its populace. They're trapped with a ballot George Orwell wouldn't wish on his most hated dystopia, and the city's most horrendous Bad Boys are the only ones who can save the day. Best of luck, citizens. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is another vicious satire skewering contemporary society while highlighting the damned, nothing-new, never-ending cycle of corruption. Do you think your hell is the most hell that's ever hell'ed? Nah. It's the same old hell. It's only new to you. Eagerly, we lean into Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors, trying to discern any wisdom they've gained by plunging themselves into the world of Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. We continue to explore satire's purpose, why two dumb protagonists are the heroes we deserve, and how The Matrix Reloaded deserves a second viewing, if not a third, fourth, and fifth. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is now available in trade paperback from Ahoy Comics. Follow Matt Bors on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. I hope you're ready for another great doubleheader episode, this time beginning with Ahoy Comics' new Toxic Avenger mini-series creators Matt Bors and Fred Harper, then concluding with Danny Hellman from Jacked Tracts, which is crowdfunding on Zoop.gg! The episode starts with my fun interview with writer Matt Bors, returning to the podcast, and first-timer artist Fred Harper. They're bringing a new take on Toxic Avenger, which is being described this way: “It's an all-new 5-issue comic book series starring THE TOXIC AVENGER, the satirical hero of the Troma Films cult classic films. Having already spawned five films, a cartoon, action figures, a musical, and a Marvel comic book series, the Toxic Avenger is a pop culture icon.” We talk about how this new mini-series came to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from these two creators in the months ahead! The first issue has just been released, so be sure to check with your local comics shop, who can order the books for you if they don't already have a copy in stock! Then everything wraps up with my excellent conversation with Jacked Tracts creator Danny Hellman, who has this current crowdfunding project underway with Zoop.gg. Here's the description: “Jacked Tracts is a spirited satire of those notorious Christian comic tracts that thrilled and traumatized American kids throughout the late 20th Century. Its rollicking re-examination of these comics from a contemporary perspective is sure to delight believers and heathens alike!” Danny discusses how this book came to be, who the characters and creators are, and what else he has coming soon! Be sure to back this already successful crowdfunder before it concludes on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson return to the podcast to discuss Justice Warriors: Vote Harder from Ahoy Comics. But first, has it been 100 episodes since we last spoke to Matt and Ben? How old is everyone's kids? Is this comic dumb in a good way? How is this comic connected to 9/11? Is there an overall message the comic is trying to convey? Was Vote Harder only released as a trade? Has Justice Warriors predicted the future multiple times? Is P. Diddy a fall guy? Is there a secret conspiracy hidden within the comic? Would Ben make a great Riddler? Are we fans of zaniness? What are some of our favorite gags in the comic? What is The Great Popping Off? Do pneumatic tubes still exist? Is this the most political comic out this year? Was Robocop and Starship Troopers a big include on Justice Warriors? Is the Akira slide in this comic? How did they get H. Jon Benjamin for the Vote Harder trailer? How deep can Ben go on 9/11? How do we feel about Yellowstone? What hopes do they have to take Justice Warriors to the world of animation? What other potential plots for future volumes do they have in mind? What are the Meatball Riots? Will there ever be Justice Warrior one-shots and mini-series? Are Schitt's kids terrifying? Are the characters lovable even though they aren't necessarily good or self aware? Was this a compelling read for us? Could we predict the outcome of Bubble City's election? Did the comic end on a positive note? Do we feel bad for liking cops in media like The Wire? Is Justice Warriors officially greenlit for a third volume? What can we expect from Matt Bor's new Toxic Avenger series from Ahoy? Does Matt have a thing for mutants, especially the ugly and weird ones? What mainstream comic series would Matt and Ben like to work on? What is Planet Gun? Should Swamp and Schitt become space cops? Do we like volume 2 of Justice Warriors more than vol. 1? Would Justice Warriors make a great Adult Swim series? Would we sell out for Marvel money? And will Vote Harder get the highly coveted 666 Pesci rating? What would Swamp and Schitt's Mortal Kombat fatalities be? Is Justice Warriors relevant in the dumbest ways? Find out the answers to these and more on the newest episode of Comics and Chronic! Ben & Matt of the JUSTICE WARRIORS comic series join us this week. We look at the SECOND Trump assassination attempt in about as many months, Trump's increasingly intimate relationship with Laura Loomer, and just his insane personal and political arc over the last few months. Then, more seriously, the continued blatant demagoguery around immigration stirred up by Republicans that Democrats and the Harris campaign seems unequipped to respond to. Finally, a few stories that seem to have crossed from the pages of Justice Warriors into reality. On today's episode, I talk to Eisner-winning comics editor and two time Pulitzer Prize Finalist in cartooning Matt Bors. Originally from Canton, Ohio, Matt attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he first began drawing editorial cartoons for the student newspaper. At 23, his work became syndicated by Universal Features, making him the youngest syndicated cartoonist in the country at that time. Since then, his comics have appeared in The Nation, The Guardian, Village Voice, CNN, The Intercept, and were collected in the book We Should Improve Society Somewhat. In 2013, Matt founded the wonderful political comics site The Nib and ran it until it ceased operating in 2023. Most recently, Matt created the fantastic dystopian satire Justice Warriors with Ben Clarkson and is writing an upcoming Toxic Avenger series for Ahoy Comics. Dick story "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale". We discuss the film's long gestation period under several different producers and directors, most notably as a project for Hit Factory fave David Cronenberg. Then we go long on the film's startling prescience, it's themes of revolution against the extractive brutalist of an imperialist force, and Verhoeven's metatextual commentary on filmic reality as psycholgical mirror and wish fulfillment fantasy. Elsewhere, we discuss the dire 2012 Len Wiseman remake starring Colin Farrell and how it betrays and insults its audience by stripping away any and all subtext. Check out Matt & Ben's graphin novel, Justice Warriors.Follow Matt Bors on Twitter.Follow Ben Clarkson on Twitter. ....Our theme song is Mirror by Chris Fish.

As big budget Hollywood movies underperform and business models collapse, two Japanese films have been surprise hits in North America - Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron and Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One, which reportedly only cost a tenth of the budget of a typical MCU film. Our discussion casts a critical eye on Godzilla Minus One as symptomatic of larger problems in modern blockbuster filmmaking that not even this film can avoid; wasteful spending, labor conditions for VFX artists, creative accounting, and most crucially a lack of cinematic style and vision in the finished product. Ben offers a critique from the perspective of a creative as well, how camera placement and the concept of “shooting for the edit” as important storytelling techniques seem to be afterthoughts in the modern age. We also compare Godzilla Minus One to a better recent Japanese Godzilla movie we both love, 2016's Shin Godzilla, which works both as a kaiju film and a satire about bureaucratic Japan's failure to handle the 2011 earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear accident. Plus Ben and I talk about Justice Warriors and his great trailer for season 4 of the Blowback podcast. Follow Ben Clarkson on Twitter. With The Nib, cartoonist & editor Matt Bors helped build an online (and print!) venue for political satire, graphic journalism and non-fiction comics that featured some of the best names in comics and gave space to a bazillion up-and-comers. Matt & I sat down during CXC to talk about his decision to close down The Nib after 10 years, how it felt to bring together the best political cartoonists under a single online umbrella, how tech money giveth and taketh away, and what this fall's farewell tour means to him. We get into what comes after The Nib (like Justice Warriors comic), how it felt to see one of his comics displayed on the floor of the House of Representatives, the challenges & rewards of building a diverse roster of cartoonists, why he always wanted a print companion of The Nib, and how mainstream comics and dystopian science fiction have always held an appeal for him (and why he'd love to do more with his Wasteland characters). We also discuss how it feels to have traded America for Canada and how the move has changed his perspective, the ways his post-Nib self spends less time getting mad online, how he plans to catch up on all the comics he's missed in the last decade, what it's like having his first two-week stretch as an adult without immediate editorial deadlines, and more! First off, congratulations on the second printing of Justice Warriors! For our listeners, what's the elevator pitch for this series?Every page is full of interesting background bits. Was that a tonal goal here?Horoscopes play a huge part in Justice Warriors, are either of you into horoscopes, or maybe the opposite, despise them? Are either of you a Libra? If a Justice Warriors 2 was crafted, who might the threat be this time?Matt, for those who don't know, you ran The Nib for 10 years, a twice named a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Likely a sensitive topic, why are you closing shop now? When can we expect the final issue to land at our doorsteps (after we buy it from thenib.com)?It's way too early I'm sure, but if The Nib continued in some format, where or how might we see The Nib?

Possibly the most political comic on the stands, Justice Warriors is a brutal, hilarious and ornately drawn new satirical comic about policing, power and AI in the dystopian Bubble City. Join series co-creators Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors as we talk about their first trade paperback published by Ahoy Comics. Matt Bors is a cartoonist, writer, editor, and the founder of The Nib. He was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist for his political cartoons in 2012 and 2020  His cartoons were collected in the book We Should Improve Society Somewhat.  Ben Clarkson is an artist, animator, filmmaker and writer based in Montreal. His work has appeared on Adult Swim, Time.com and been featured in GQ. Justice Warriors is his first comic series.  I want to credit Justice Warriors colorist Felipe Sobriero for his work too. You got comedy in my dystopia! You got dystopia in my comedy! Two great tastes that taste great together! In our latest Creator Cranny conversation, we chat with Pulitzer Prize finalist Matt Bors and Adult Swim filmmaker Ben Clarkson about their righteously hilarious buddy cop sci-fi satire, Justice Warriors. The new book from Ahoy Comics is a viciously funny tale about two Bubble City law enforcers maintaining the peace of the Uninhabited Zone. At the same time, their mayor desperately tries to up his album sales. Prepare yourselves before entering these pages, as what you'll find within is painfully silly and horrifyingly recognizable as our own dystopian present. Justice Warriors sparked a fire in us, and we were more than excited to have Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson in our Love Nest continuing to stoke the flames. Justice Warriors is one of our favorite comics of 2023. The book is biting, absurd, and frickin' hysterical, and the art is astonishingly beautiful. Gaze upon these panels and marvel. Ben Clarkson tortured himself to put these characters and hyper-detailed backgrounds together. Justice Warriors is busting with visual gags, demanding a second, third, and fourth read. In this conversation, we explore the nature of speaking to the moment, the purpose of art, and the many, many influences that fueled Justice Warriors (does anyone else remember C.O.P.S., the animated series?). Of course, we never let ourselves get too serious either, and it's impossible with Bors and Clarkson around. This year has already proven to be an exceptional year for comics, so don't let Justice Warriors slip past your radar. Jump over to the Ahoy Comics website and give these pages a gander. They're irresistible. Also, follow Matt Bors on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Follow Ben Clarkson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. On depicting dystopia. Acclaimed cartoonists, writers and artists Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson join us for something a little different: to talk about their new comic book, Justice Warriors. Set in a grotesquely unequal world, a police procedural (of sorts) encounters an astrology-based social movement seeking justice. We talk about how dystopian fiction often serves to manufacture consent and about how fiction can confront us with images of social decline. We also debate free will and determinism in a world that presents few opportunities, social justice warriors and politics that perpetuate the present, and why there is no 'pure' people set against the elite. Justice Warriors Vol. 1 is out NOW from Ahoy Comics and available wherever books are sold. Buy it from your local bookstore or comic shop! It's a wild satire, disgusting but delightfully so – it's one of the most unique comics on the shelves. How did these two storytellers get together? How did Matt Bors decide to step away from political cartooning to cowrite this story about a cop made out of poop with Ben Clarkson, an experienced artist and storyteller in painting, illustration, and animation? You WON'T BELIEVE IT! But seriously, it's a fun story. How does a massive world filled with bonkers characters, driven by economic and political satire come together in a cohesive comic book? Matt Bors (https://thenib.com/author/matt-bors/) started drawing editorial cartoons for his student newspaper while attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. His work has since appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, The Village Voice, and The Daily Beast, among others. His first graphic novel War Is Boring was a collaboration with journalist David Axe. It came out in 2010 from New American Library. More recently, his hysterical and pointed collection of comics entitled We Should Improve Society Somewhat (https://cloverpress.us/products/we-should-improve-society-somewhat) came out in June 2020 from Clover Press. We talk about both books at length here; we also discuss Matt's current and upcoming projects, his decision to leave editorial cartooning, and why he's pursuing different artistic goals in the wake of the nightmare of Trump's authoritarian populism. Incredibly, he is embarking on these projects while doing all of the labour required to keep The Nib (https://thenib.com/) going. The Nib is an online daily comics publication and a crucial space for comic strip interventions on contemporary issues; it features political cartoons, graphic journalism, essays and memoir. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation. Matt expands on what it meant to enter publishing at what he calls the “tail end of print,” only to find that while social media seemed to be a new frontier for publication, it was basically impossible to make a living by “being online.” Now, though, of course, using a hybrid method, The Nib is showing how comics can thrive and find new audiences. Matt, perhaps more than most cartoonists, has had to deal with the volatile nature of contemporary political discourse. He's also witnessed first-hand the sort of state violence that organized protest can provoke. He describes the horrifying experience of being in Portland in 2020 and witnessing the realization of Trump's fascist rhetoric in the form of police and federal agents “warring” with protestors, as he puts it. But the interview ends on a positive note--perhaps somewhat unusual for this podcast--Matt feels that, as a public, we have reached a level of “political education” where far more “understand the problems now” and routinely engage with the reality of a “hell world.” The challenge now would seem to be redirecting the “frustration” and “resignation” people feel at not being able to act quickly or collectively into meaningful mass movements.

The magazine launched online first, as one of the sites that were part of Medium in its early days, and in this conversation he explains how that relationship came to an end, and how he ended up working with First Look Media, another company with lots of money to spend, and how that also came to an end as their priorities shifted. These days Matt is running the whole thing entirely independently on what he calls a “sane business model”, funded by his readers, and I was really interested to hear his thoughts on the experience of working with those big, wealthy partners, compared to the business he runs today.

Dylan Meconis is a prolific cartoonist who lives in Portland, Oregon. She constantly labors away at a mix between her solo work and projects in collaboration with others, including writing the script for Scott Kurtz's popular PvP webcomic. She is part of Periscope Studio, which we've talked about in previous podcasts. We talk about building a career and learning from mistakes while keeping all the plates spinning. (a vampire farce); Family Man, a graphic novel being told pages at a time, and then collected into volumes; and Danse Macabre 2.0. My friend Alison Hallett recommended Dylan's work and the Bone series by Jeff Smith. Dylan mentioned the artist Ivan Bilibin as an inspiration for Outfoxed. Portland has a ton of creative people of all sorts, and cartoonists and comic-book artists rank high among them. Both Dark Horse Comics and Oni Press are based there. Erika Moen, a Periscope Studio participant, was on this show in August 2013. Bill Amend (Foxtrot) became internet famous. Dylan's Kickstarter campaign was successful, but she hit a bunch of snags we discuss. Her wife, Katie Lane, is a lawyer who advises freelancers at Work Made for Hire on making good decisions about their work and rights! Katie performs legal work for cartoonist Matt Bors, a previous guest on this podcast. I and Dylan listed off an oodle of conferences, which include Gallifrey One, Rose City Comic Con, Emerald City Comicon, PAX, the XOXO conference, MaxFunCon, and JoCo Cruise Crazy. Erika Moen is using Patreon to fund each cartoon she creates.

Matt Bors is an independent political cartoonist. He's never had a staff job, and he's never drawn a banker holding bags of money where the banker is labeled "BANKER" and the bags of money have giant dollar signs on them. You've certainly seen Matt's work before, but you may not have known that he created it. You'll recognize his style when you visit his site.
