How much of your day do you spend thinking about food, calories, body image, and your weight?”  “The brain and the body are not designed to go on yo-yo dieting...the body will fight back...the brain becomes obsessive.”  “All of us can be healthier at whatever weight we’re at.”  “We’re trying to expand the focus around how can I be healthier without focusing on the number on the scale because it doesn’t capture everything…”   Melainie Rogers MS, RDN, CDN is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) and Supervisor and is dedicated to supporting others in their quest to achieve long-term recovery. Shame. Guilt. Secretive thoughts. As women, many of us have insecurities and are lacking freedom in regards to food and body-image. With only 10% of those with an eating disorder actually getting help for their issues, research shows that there are many people who struggle for years and decades with intrusive thoughts and destructive habits. It can be a fine line between being healthy and having it take over your life, mind and time and Melainie Rogers speaks to all of this in her role as an eating disorder specialist.Resources:Episode 2 on Body ImageWebsite for Melainie’s resources and to book a free 20 minute discovery callLet’s connect!BALANCEDTX INSTAGRAMHERSELF INSTAGRAMMEET AMY MEET ABBY

Melainie Rogers, MS, RDN, CDN, CEDRD-S, is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) and Supervisor and is dedicated to supporting others in their quest to achieve long-term recovery. She is the Founder and Executive Director of BALANCE eating disorder treatment center™ and melainie rogers nutrition, llc. In this episode, Erin talks to Melainie Rogers about how to know if you have a problem with food. Melainie says to ask yourself: ‘How much of my day do I spend worrying about food?’ If you often ask yourself question after question about food each day, then it might suggest a problem or obsessiveness. We strive to have a neutral relationship with food. Erin likes to think of food as fuel for our bodies. Also, if anxiety is stirred up surrounding food, it could suggest an unhealthy relationship with food. Then, Melainie explains the difference between disordered eating and an eating disorder. These fall along a spectrum. Disordered eating is when symptoms of overeating or restricting occur. These behaviors may happen once a week or once a month. However, it’s still distressing and should be of concern. Someone who is restricting most days of the week or also bingeing, that’s an eating disorder. The symptoms and behaviors are the same, it’s just less frequency. Disordered eating is still important, troublesome, and dangerous. Later, Melainie explains how social media plays a role in our self-image. Social media will give us a constant stream of images for us to compare ourselves to. Pre social media, we were only exposed to TV, magazines, and billboards. With social media, we have it 24/7. As we scroll, we are comparing ourselves. Whenever we compare ourselves to others, it always make us feel bad. Social media is one of the reasons we are seeing an uptick in eating disorders at this time. Stay tuned as Erin and Melainie talk about the relationship between women’s thoughts and their diets, why we need to change our “healthy” eating vocabulary, and much more!   In This Episode:    [00:30]About today’s guest, Melainie Rogers [01:00] How to know if you have a problem with food [03:00] The difference between eating disorders and binge-eating [06:10] How social media plays a role in our self-image [10:05] The connection between women’s thoughts and their diets [13:25] Why we shouldn’t say “clean eating” [17:15] About Orthorexia [20:50] Taking baby steps with your thoughts [24:20] When to take the first step in seeking help   Quotes:    “Disordered eating is like a badly sprained ankle – it’s still really bad, it might bother you for a few years, causing you a lot of pain, distress, and discomfort.”   “When we compare ourselves, we usually feel worse about ourselves; it lowers our self-esteem and lowers our self-confidence. Also, it creates a distortion that we need to look like that person.”  “Our mental anxiety can only increase because we feel like we are performing shortly.”    “The most helpful relationship with people is food neutrality.” Resources: IG: https://www.instagram.com/erinroefit/       website: erinroe.com Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/erinroefit/   Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1208735172667732/ YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVFqZiXhmUD5G3c7fAJ5m-w?sub_confirmation=1   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-roe-564066195/ Pinterest: pinterest.com/erinlr0318 Twitter: https://twitter.com/erinroefit Join my posse at our podcast Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MyEmpowerProject/ Redefining Wellness: The Ultimate Diet Free Guide: https://www.amazon.com/Redefining-Wellness-Ultimate-Diet-Guide/dp/1674393180 __________________________ Guest: Melainie Rogers   Feel free to reach out to Melainie below:   Twitter: https://twitter.com/MelainieRogers   Website: https://balancedtx.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedtx/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BALANCEedtc/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6FNWjY30kMH1cFzVz2qvhw   Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/balancedtx/   Free Recovery Handbook: https://balancedtx.com/free-eating-disorder-recovery-handbook __________________________

That’s not a way that we’re designed to exist, so when we are feeling that way, our survival mechanism is to try to bring that down to a more balanced level, and food in this case is seeing a purpose, bu tit also has a side effect, which is more calories than people are used to taking in.” “This may be a very temporary period and not necessarily disordered or an eating disorder because it’s very specific to the current environment. It’s so out of the norm of anything we’ve experienced.” “What was our set weight when we were 20 or 25 is a little bit different to when we’re 40 or 50 or 60 because of a multitude of factors.” “Weight is a range and we may not want to embrace that but there has to be some kind of acceptance around it and moving beyond just body image and weight on a scale even though society tells us it’s so damn important, especially for women.” Connect with Jen and Shamelessly Feminine: Join the Reconstruction™ Facebook group Follow Jen and Shamelessly Feminine on Facebook Follow Jen and Shamelessly Feminine on Instagram Subscribe to the Jen Rozenbaum YouTube Channel This episode was originally published on shamelesslyfeminine.com/episode-71. Yet Melanie was able to describe how your fat cells don’t go away when you lose weight, your fat cells only deflate.  And once your fat cells deflate, they trigger your body to start craving foods.
