Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Tayyba Kanwal about her debut story collection, TALKING WITH BOYS.  In the conversation, Kanwal shared how her stories explore themes of cultural identity and female agency through the lens of Pakistani-Americans. With linked characters, the tales span Houston, Lahore, Pakistan; and Dubai, going as far back as 1950 to 2020. Tayyba Kanwal is a Pakistani-American writer from Houston, TX. Her award-winning work has appeared injournals such as Witness, Gulf Coast and Meridian. Born in Lahore, Pakistan, and raised in the United Arab Emirates, she holds an MFA from the University of Houston where she was an Inprint C. "This raw desert field recording, resonating from the halls of the Klimahaus Bremerhaven in Germany (Climate House Museum Bremerhaven), sparked a vision of musical imagination within me.  "It drew me into a hidden world of untold stories, and from its pulse and breath, I shaped a soundscape I call Meridian. A sonic journey tracing the secret heart of the desert and revealing an oasis born of imagination. "I chose to keep the original field recording largely untouched, aside from a few subtle adjustments to its timeline. Rather than altering it, I composed around the field recording, employing gentle musical techniques, layered resonance, micro-harmonic drifting, and slow spectral unfolding so that the environment itself becomes the primary instrument. "As the piece unfolds, the distant cries of unseen creatures, the soft patter of rain, and the quiet exhalation of wind emerge in deepening layers. From these textures, harmonies and melodic traces seem to arise naturally, weaving through the soundscape until the line between composition and ecology dissolves. What begins as a simple recording becomes, for me, a passage toward Meridian Consciousness: a threshold where reality softens, and listening transforms into an act of awakening. Loops, concrete recordings, found sounds and open source synthesised sounds enhance the piece, expanding its atonal contours,  a space I have long loved to explore. "Meridian reflects my meditation on the fragile, far-reaching threads that bind Earth to Cosmos, and the heightened attentiveness demanded in an age of ecological uncertainty. It is an invitation to listen with openness, to drift inward, and to sense the delicate equilibrium  that sustains our shifting world. "When I compose a soundscape, I enter a dreamlike state of heightened awareness. Intuition and curiosity guide me, while musical notation and my enduring affection for atonality serve only as a gentle compass.  "My aural journey began at six, seated at the piano and discovering classical music.  It expanded through the unconventional energy of Germany's 1990s DJ culture of which I was a part and deepened during my years as a contracted composer with BMG. And was refined through studies in Sound & Visual Art at Middlesex University's Lansdowne Centre for Electronic Arts. These experiences shape a practice that moves fluidly between structure and instinct, between inquiry and an enduring love for crafting soundscapes." John KokkoWhen I moved to the SF Bay area, a friend introduced me to Fu Yu-Tai, a renowned tui-na (traditional Chinese bodywork) practitioner in the Outer Richmond of the city. I became his first student, spending every Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm for a year studying under him and working with his patients. At the same time, I got a job working at Mayway, the largest Chinese herbal company in the country. Mama Lau became famous in Chinatown a couple of decades back, selling every traditional herb under the sun. She even started a restaurant cooking traditional herbal soups and dishes next door to their herb shop. What I learned there by the time they moved to Oakland was invaluable. I stayed there for 7 years, which got me through graduate school.Since acupuncture licensure, I've taught dozens of graduate courses at three acupuncture colleges for a decade and ran a program to help hundreds of graduates pass their state and national licensure board exams.I also sat on the board of the California State Oriental Medical Association for 5 years, working with others in guiding policy and continuing education for our profession. However, I am most proud of teaching for 3 years at Contra Costa College. At this community college, the academic dean, Susan Lee, now a family friend, helped me set up a program for preventative health using the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. We saw people who reversed major alcohol and smoking addiction, chronic pain, blood sugar and hypertension issues, and anxiety and depression by utilizing the eight branches of Chinese medicine in their everyday lives. This was nothing short of miraculous in many cases and still inspires me today. My passions include creating community through the art of tea. For this, I owe a debt of gratitude to my late tea teacher, Winnie Yu, one of the first to bring artisanal tea to the West. She taught me to be generous and authentic, and that tea, like so many things, can bring us all together and dissolve differences.I continue to refine my clinical practice through ongoing studies with orthopedic expert Alon Marcus and Lonny Jarrett, a pioneer in integral medicine. Both have been awe-inspiring mentors and great friends on this amazing journey. Guest Hunter Seim is a thirty-year veteran of the Bureau of Land Management. His current role is a range and wild horse advisor to the District Manager of the Northwest District, Colorado BLM. During his career, he worked as a land survey technician and an outdoor recreation planner specializing in wilderness management in Palm Springs, California, and as a rangeland management specialist and an assistant field manager in Craig, Colorado. His duties have given him exposure to almost every aspect of managing public lands. He received a Bachelor of Science in Range Management from Texas Tech University in 1992. Range management and rangeland ecology are my primary background and where the bulk of my career and professional interests lie. Summary Hunter Seim brings three decades of experience from the Bureau of Land Management to this conversation about managing America's public lands. With a background in range management and ecology, Hunter explains how the BLM oversees 245 million acres across the western states, balancing diverse and often conflicting interests—from wilderness preservation to resource extraction, livestock grazing, and wildlife habitat protection. The discussion reveals the BLM's unique challenge: its mission is so broad that "somebody's always going to be disappointed." Hunter describes managing everything from wilderness boundaries in California to oil and gas reclamation in Colorado, emphasizing that collaboration is essential to success. Rather than dictating policy, the BLM works as a neighbor to thousands of private landowners, state agencies, and various other stakeholders. Particularly fascinating is Hunter's work with outcome-based grazing, which demonstrates how properly managed livestock grazing can coexist with—and even benefit—sensitive habitats, such as sage grouse environments. The wild horse program presents one of the agency's most emotionally charged challenges, as the BLM attempts to balance animal welfare with ecosystem health while facing intense public scrutiny amplified by social media. From fire management to water rights, mineral extraction to animal crossings, the BLM operates at the intersection of conservation and commerce. Hunter emphasizes that these public lands benefit all Americans, whether they ever visit them or not—from the resources they provide to the simple knowledge that vast, undeveloped wilderness still exists. His recommended reading, Wallace Stegner's "Beyond the 100th Meridian," captures the essential challenge of managing the arid West. The Essential Point The most critical insight is that successful public lands management requires constant collaboration and a balancing act between competing interests. The BLM cannot simply dictate policy—it must work as a neighbor with thousands of stakeholders, from ranchers to environmentalists, state agencies to private landowners. This collaborative approach, exemplified by outcome-based grazing initiatives that benefit both livestock operators and wildlife habitat, demonstrates that conservation and commerce need not be mutually exclusive.
