She shares an easy to use equation to build courses that are engaging and beneficial for teachers and students. Be sure to connect with her on Twitter.   Topic Shared: Design+Delivery+Content= Learning Offering online experiences to students has several components. 3 categories to consider that impact learning in online spaces. Design- elements that help students to be successful Clear directions and expectations- in an online space students aren’t sitting with you where they can ask for clarification Organization- easy to navigate and find materials and activities Opportunities for interaction and collaboration Integration of a variety of digital tools Delivery- teacher communication with students and presence in the space with regular and timely feedback Content- Evidence that standards are taught, there are opportunities for transfer and standards are assessed. Without these components, you may just have a list of resources We want our online learning spaces to… Build community Be collaborative Utilized a variety of online tools Be engaging Offer active learning opportunities For our virtual courses we have developed checklists for design elements and delivery elements that create conditions for more formal learning. We are planning to create a document that helps us evaluate the content of our courses as well. These checklists hold our courses accountable for best practices in: Design consistency Accessibility Course components Human centered design Standard look and feel- organization, color, language Episode’s Guest: Amy Johnson - Digital Learning Specialist - Parkway School District - ajohnson@parkwayschools.net  - @ajohnson106   #METC19 36th Annual Conference - METC Conference Information - Session Grid - Register Today

Roger explains how his students deliver news to the whole school LIVE each morning. They start each morning at 8:01 and are finished by 8:05 to not take up too much instruction time. This quick 4 minute show includes announcements sent in by teachers through a form. Students even share the weather! Once the show is over, the learning begins. Students receive professional development on topics that help them become better at their role within the communications class.  Students in his class are also responsible for maintaining four display monitors within the school’s cafeteria. This resource has many different “projects” to get students started with coding, more specifically girls interested in coding. There is a cool mentor and futurist page that provides many different video interviews of female coders making a difference. If you are looking to introduce your students to coding, I would definitely recommend checking out this resource. Even though it has a goal of getting more females interested in coding, there are definitely some projects and resources that can be shared with both genders.     Made w/ Code

In Episode 29 of the METC Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with two very talented fifth grade students.  Danny and Ethan shared their current project with me.  They have spent their free time working on coding within Scratch a math review game for kindergarten and first graders.  Now this would be cool in and of itself, but these two took this activity a step further.  They have been able to repurpose a previously unused SMART table and turn it into a holographic, interactive tool meant to engage students in learning important content.    After speaking with these two gentlemen, it was very clear that they used perseverance throughout the process to get this activity up and running.  They tested their idea at various scales prior to building their current version.  While talking with them, they were already talking about how they could make the whole experience better for their users.  Simply amazing!   Here is a link to their code within Scratch.  You can see that it is pretty sophisticated!    Thank you to their innovation class teacher, Andy Wall for providing the time to sit with these two students.  I also would like to give their classroom teacher, Amy Maledy for allowing these students to explore their passion!   I encourage each of you to visit the Flipgrid space for this episode.  We recorded with their project in view to help give you the viewer a better understanding of what they have accomplished.  Share your thoughts and ideas.

Ryan and Howie welcome a phenomenal teacher and innovator, Chantell Mason.  Chantell is currently a 6th grade Science teacher at Steger 6th grade center in the Webster Groves school district.  We discovered Chantell because she is just received the ISTE “Making It Happen” award and was honored at METC. She not only won this award but has also been recognized by METC as a Spotlight Educator and Outstanding Young Educator.  She is also recognized by PBS as a Digital Innovator and she is a Raspberry Pi Certified Educator. While this list is really impressive, we think as you listen to the show, you will find what is really impressive is Chantell’s passion for her students. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Chantell as she discusses her work with students and how she focuses on creating a classroom environment that fosters an empathetic global community.  Her implementation of project-based learning with an emphasis on empathy and global awareness really helps her students become invested in their content and will definitely foster a deeper learning that her students will not soon forget.  Chantell really does a great job of sharing how she delivers these lessons and will give you, like she did me, several tips and resources for creating PBL magic in your classroom.

In Episode 19 of the METC podcast, I sit down with Erin Lawson from the Orchard Farm School District to learn about Student PD.  We had an awesome conversation on what it means to have a Professional Development Day for students!  This “Conference” was completely driven by the students!  Below is some information about why Student Voice and Choice is important and some great ways to possibly get started within your school/classroom.     Be sure to connect with Erin to learn more about this amazing event!   Episode's Guest: Erin Lawson - Orchard Farm School District - District Technology Coach @Erin_Lawson3   Why Student Voice and Choice? “What matters more than the aspiration is the execution.  Universal aspirations are swell, but students differ in their abilities, gifts, and needs.  Not every student will go to college.” (Frederick Hess in Educational Leadership magazine, 2016) In order to truly prepare our students, 21st century skills, soft skills, college and career ready..whatever you want to call it...we must move the responsibility from the adult to the student. Teachers are-consciously or unconsciously-trained to have students be dependent on us for their learning.  This causes a ceiling for their learning.   Encourage students to have a strong, positive mindset and give them opportunities to explore and identify areas of interest.  This will motivate them to perform. Personalization is KEY to have success with student voice and choice. Non-cognitive skills must be taught in order to achieve a “well-rounded” education. 2015 State of St. Louis Workforce study had Student PD all over it! (collaboration skills, seeing the world through other people’s eyes, public speaking, interview skills, strong handshake etc.) Teachers need to learn how to speak and act by FIRST learning to listen to students. Student voice should always have a role in teacher preparation of future lessons. 2014 Annual Student Survey of Academic Experience: Top 3 culprits of classroom boredom...1. Assignments are just busywork. 2. There’s no variety in what we do from day to day.  3. The teacher talks too much. Teachers should be doing more listening than talking, following than guiding, and more negotiating than dictating.   How can teachers implement this into their classrooms? Student PD- whole school, grade level, classroom Offer CHOICE Before starting a unit, introduce it. Relate it personally to your students.  Ask your students what they think would be the best way to learn the content. Are there any projects they can imagine would work well with this unit?  Design the unit around student input.  After the unit, ask your students if there was anything else they wanted to learn about before moving on to the next unit.   Here are some things we will be learning about.  Which three topics sound most interesting to you?  Explain why you chose each one. On a scale of 0-5, how interesting do you find what we’re working on right now? Explain your rating. What might make you more interested in the topic we’re studying? Given a choice tomorrow, would you rather learn about this topic by watching a video, reading about it, or listening to a podcast? Curriculum and projects spring from relevant questions and issues that teachers and students are passionate about. Have a group of students be the “mentors” for the teacher.  Meet with those students to get student feedback on how your class/lessons are going.   Have your students discuss what they believe “good teaching” looks like.   Genius Hour- Once a week for one hour of your class, let students work on a “capstone” or project of their own interests.  Teach them how to reach out by email/Twitter to people in the community that could help guide them.   Build teacher-student and student-student relationships.  Start with a survey: What do you enjoy spending time on? What do you struggle with? Explain. If you could invite anyone to a dinner party, whom would you invite and why? What’s the best story you’ve ever seen or heard (from a book, article, movie, TV show, friend, or family member)? What does your “space” look like, feel like where you are able to relax the best? When have you felt proud of yourself, inside or outside of school? Pose these questions to students at the beginning of the school year: Who do you want to be?  What do you want to be?  Record student aspirations in SISK12.     State of St. Louis Workforce 2015 - http://www.stlcc.edu/Workforce-Solutions/St-Louis-Workforce/Index.html   Technology Tools for Student Voice and Choice Google tools for collaboration (Google Forms for feedback) Google Sites Blogger FlipGrid TodaysMeet Twitter chats with a class hashtag Padlet   Differentiate-Personalize-Engage students-Make it relevant for their future

This past summer, METC partnered with the YMCA to bring a coding experience to students and teachers within our area.  The camp for students was called The Creative Coders Camp.  This camp took place in late July, Monday-Thursday from 8-12.  We had 10 students participant in our 1st annual camp.  The purpose of this camp was to engage students through play and coding.  Students had access to many different coding tools or some may call them "toys".  They spent their first couple days exploring each of the toys.  They researched the tool to learn more about them.  Then, on day 3 of the camp, students chose 1 tool to focus on and become "experts" on that particular tool.  They knew that their end goal was to teach teachers at the end of the week about their specific tool.     The students did an amazing job!  They were so engaged and excited to learn how to code, it was incredible to watch.  Their interaction with the teachers was awesome too!  They really stepped up and enjoyed teaching others!  In this episode, Orlando Sharpe sits down with our Creative Coders and discusses their journey as a participant within the club.  These students shared some great ideas and offer some great perspective into why it is valuable to bring coding into classrooms to engage students!  In this episode, I talk with Tina Lauer about a great topic, Novel Engineering.  Novel Engineering combines design thinking to your curriculum in a process that engages your students in many different key skills.  Find more information about Novel Engineering below.  Reach out and connect with Tina if you are interested in learning more and/or have questions as you begin thinking of using Novel Engineering within your classroom.   Topic Introduction: Novel Engineering was developed by Tufts University Center for Engineering Education and Outreach and combines reading and engineering in a way that increases students’ literacy in a variety of subject areas.  As part of Novel Engineering, students create projects based on problems they have identified in novels or other content area reading selections.  The characters in the novel (or real-life people in non-fiction selections) become the “clients” and students must design prototypes that will help solve the problem(s) they have identified. In this episode I celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week by recognizing the 5 most influential teachers that I have been blessed to work for or with over my educational career.  Without any of these teachers, who knows where I would be within my career.  Each one of these educators has modeled leadership all while taking me under their wing to mold me into the educator I am today.     Even though Teacher Appreciation Week is coming to an end, it is never too late to show your appreciation for the teachers that are responsible for making you the person you are today.  If you would like to share a story of a teacher that changed your life, add a comment to our Podbean account, Google Play or within iTunes.  You can also tweet out your appreciation using the #METCpodcast.  As we continue to celebrate our educators on future podcasts, we may share any stories that have been shared with us.  We look forward to hearing who the influential teachers are in your lives.

As I think back to my childhood again, I try to think about all of the fun I had with Legos.  However, I don’t know if I had any Legos as a child.  So, instead I fast forward to each holiday I get to visit with my niece and notice how engaged she gets whenever she receives a new set of Legos.  I often hear that the attention span of 10 year olds is about 30 minutes and that as educators we should switch up our setting/activity/assignment around that time frame to accommodate their attention needs. However,  I have personally observed my 9 year old niece work for HOURS on a Lego set.  The engagement, determination & problem solving skills she demonstrates while building with her Legos is amazing!  Once she is finished, she always rushes out to show and explain her final product.  This is what we, as educators, want all of our students to feel like within our classrooms.  We want them engaged in their learning.  We want them to build important skills like problem solving, perseverance, and creativity.  Getting them to build with Legos accomplishes these goals.   In this episode I talk with two Lego in Education experts, Amanda Morris & Krista Rouse, about the benefits of using these fun little pieces within their learning environments.  Krista within the library setting and Amanda within her classroom talk about all of the benefits they have seen by bringing the power of play with Legos into their educational settings.  They share a lot of different ideas, so be sure to check out the show notes at the website mentioned below.   Episode Guests: Krista Rouse - LMS - Blackhurst Elementary - @MsRouseInTheLIB   Amanda Morris - 3rd Grade teacher - Monroe Elementary - @msmorrislearns   METCedplus.org for the Show Notes.
