Send us a textHello passionate cruisers, this is Paul. This week on The Joy Of Cruising Podcast Cheryl and I will share our reflections on our recent cruise—a 9-day sailing to the Southern Caribbean—A, B, C Islands aboard Celebrity Cruises newest ship, the latest in its Edge-class, the Ascent. A, B, C is an acronym for Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. The full itinerary of Ascent was embarkation at FLL followed by a sea day; a stop at Cayman/Georgetown, a seaday, then Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire, then 2 sea days on the way back to Ft. Lauderdale. We've gone on longer cruises and enjoyed the extra time but after a while Cheryl is like “I need land” like she said on our 16-day transatlantic with 8 straight sea days. The cruise was 9-days, a sweet spot for us; 7-days is just not quite long enough. This cruise was special in several ways. It was a celebration of our anniversary which was 3-weeks prior in October. A cruise on Celebrity Ascent was a direct challenge to our as yet favorite cruise which was on Ascent's sister ship in Celebrity's Edge Class, the Celebrity Beyond two years prior. I often proudly mention in the same sentence that the CEO at Celebrity who launched the Edge Class—Lisa Lutoff Perlo, was a guest on the The Joy Of Cruising Podcast and she too selected Beyond as her personal favorite. Lisa launched the Celebrity Edge, Apex, and the Beyond before her move back to Royal Caribbean. Most significantly was the sentimental aspect of this trip. Aruba is where we celebrated our honeymoon, and this was our first return back in 32 years. Today we're looking back on eight of the most significant years of their lives, our time on a FIRST Robotics team. We go over our 4 years of FLL, 4 years of FTC, some of the high and lows, and shocking revelations are made about how we first met. Also, why we hate enthusiastic marketing. (Recorded February 21st, 2022.)
After listening to and watching so many Costa Rica travel guides, I think my knowledge on this beautiful destination far exceeds all I should know, and because of that, we had an amazing trip. Traveling is not all it's cracked up to be - it's messy, uncomfortable at times, but ultimately, it's so rewarding and helps me create memories that truly do last a lifetime.Prior to meeting my boyfriend, I was the biggest advocate for solo-travel. It's empowering and bold and makes me feel alive. Over the last two years, I've uncovered just how truly special it is to travel the world who brightens you up every single day. I had never truly had a travel partner before Jon, and it's a whole new level of pure bliss, even if our bags get lost and we drive through a cloud forest. So, tune in for an adventure from lost luggage to frightening winding roads to 5-star resorts, we share it all. Things to Do in Costa Rica/ Requirements Fly from an international hub for direct flights, much better than taking a layover. Before leaving for Costa Rica, read about the travel requirements HERE. To abide by COVID-19 requirements, fill out this form 72 hours before your departure to CR. Flight InformationFor example, FLL and MIA are great options if you are in south Florida because you have Spirit, American, Delta, and more. Excursions White water rafting with Arenal Rafting booked through Tripadvisor for less than $200 which includes pick up, transportation, lunch, safety gear, an amazing guide and team, and the whole entire experience, which is one for the books. Without a doubt, a must do while in Costa Rica. I know there are a lot of excursions to choose from, but if you are seeking an adrenaline rush and a memory that will last a lifetime, whitewater rafting is it. This was my first time whitewater rafting and it was considered Class 4. I was slightly nervous to be honest, but it was exhilarating and we didn't even flip. Disclaimer, if you don't feel comfortable or confident in your physical capacities, this might not be for you. There are a lot of options in and around La Fortuna, which make this location perfect to explore. One of the top rated things to do is ziplining through the rainforest or going ATVing so you can cover more land in a shorter period of time. We met an extremely nice couple who were our partners on the Arenal Rafting excursion and they raved about their hike up to Arenal. So if you are into hiking and exploring like that, you have tons of options on the volcano Arenal. While in Peru a few months back, Jon and I went to a chocolate museum and loved every second. So when we saw the signs for the “Choco Museo” in La Fortuna, we were so excited. That's a great way to spend an hour or two. Before you leave La Fortuna, going to the Mistico Hanging Bridges is an absolute must. It had 6 hanging bridges and waterfalls on the trail. It had so many beautiful scenes; it took about 2 hours and please wear closed-toed shoes/biking boots, especially if it's raining. Thank me later. You can make a reservation for Mistico Park or just show up and hope for the best. There were a lot of guided tours going on, but we went by ourselves and had an amazing time. Where to Stay in La Fortuna La Fortuna felt both safe and unique, but it was great to stay a few minutes down the road from the action so it wasn't loud and it was more intimate to enjoy the incredible views of the volcano Arenal. We stayed at Royal Corin, which is a 5 star hotel and every single room has a view of the volcano and the thermal heated spas. Yes, really the pools aren't your typical inground pool… they are HOT SPRINGS. Royal Corin had three different restaurants, breakfast included a swim up bar, a gorgeous spa that checks all the boxes, and comfortable king beds. Without a doubt, the view was worth the price of admission and every single person who worked there was extremely kind and helpful. I know very little Spanish and I'm working to learn more, but the entire team spoke English and helped when a language barrier came up. Carry some cash, so you can tip when you stay where you do. Across the street from Royal Corin is the really famous Baldi Springs, which is also a hotel and there was a lot going on there. We stayed at the Royal Corin for 2 nights and 3 days and I wish we could have stayed there forever. La Fortuna is definitely geared toward tourists, and you will pay the price for those luxuries. The prices at restaurants and hotels/resorts were very comparable to being in an American city. Airbnb is also an amazing option for unique, beautifully curated homes and destination spots. Knowing that the drive from the airport in San Jose, CR to La Fortuna was challenging and very time consuming; we decided to stay at an Airbnb in Alajuela, so we were only 25 minutes from the airport. Restaurants and Places to Eat Inside the Royal Corin, there is a delectable restaurant that makes you feel like you are truly in an exotic, luxurious location and it's called Lava Restaurante. Although I am a travel writer and blogger, I live in the moment and there are many times I catch myself saying “This is the best EVER.” Their steaks and chicken dishes were some for the books. In the town of La Fortuna, we created some of our favorite memories as it was raining and there was a beautiful church and park at the center of the action. The night began with getting margaritas and sushi boats at Kappa Sushi, which was really highly rated with a 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor. We ate outside and it was a very small spot. Lava Lounge is absolutely geared towards tourists as it has music blasting, great entertainment, and lively energy. We did not eat there, but others we met raved about it. We wrapped up the night with drinks at Nanku and asked for pisco sours and a local shot. Enjoy your trip - drive safe and make the most of your time in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Madalyn championed STEM Diversity by addressing girls' underrepresentation and minorities in STEM. More about Madalyn: Madalyn Nguyen, a rising senior at Poway High School (PHS) Engineering Academy, is a STEM enthusiast, FIRST Robotics fanatic, and aspiring engineer or computer scientist. Getting a Mindstorm Robot in 5th grade ignited her love for robotics and desire to join every FIRST Robotics program possible: FIRST Lego League (6th grade), FIRST Tech Challenge & SWENext (7th grade) and FIRST Robotics Competition-Team Spyder (experienced/motivated 8th grader). Seeing that girls were minorities on her robotics team, she founded the Society of Women Engineers and National Center for Women and Information Technology Clubs to create a community that encourages girls, especially minority girls, to join robotics. The purpose of the clubs is to support, promote, give opportunities for advancement, and empower girls in STEM to pursue careers in engineering. Madalyn champions for STEM Diversity, especially for the underrepresented and disadvantaged, by volunteering over 200 hours of outreach per year since 2016 and is a 4 time recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Gold Award. During the fall FLL season you can find her mentoring about 10 FIRST Robotics teams locally and globally. Her greatest accomplishment is starting a FIRST Robotics program at Wilson Middle School in the low socioeconomic community City Heights in San Diego, California where 100% of the student body receives free or reduced lunch. Wilson Robotics increased participation by 300% and now has female representation of 30 % from zero participation. With her continued mentorship and support in procuring funding, Wilson Robotics is thriving going into their next season. In 2019, she traveled to Paraguay to advance STEM/Robotics Education and women in engineering and Sacramento for political advocacy with Senator Brian Jones and Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. She pays it forward by being a passionate FIRST Youth mentor & volunteer for FLL, FRC, FTC, FGC and a robot judge for FLL. She was last year's Chief Project Officer, where she oversaw the building and programming of 120 lbs robots and managed 15 subteam leads. She is currently Team Spyder Co-President, PHS Titan Ambassador (selected exclusively by teachers to represent her high school), and Poway Unified School District Career Technical Education Ambassador. Madalyn is a changemaker and trailblazer by making a difference in thousands of youths locally and globally. For her commitment to STEM Diversity, she is the recipient of the FIRST Dean's List Award 2020, the highest honor bestowed to an individual in FIRST Robotics for leadership and advancement of FIRST's mission. She was one of 10 winners selected from 3400 nominees worldwide for this prestigious award. Even after receiving her Gold Award in April 2020, she continues to advance STEM Diversity. During the pandemic, she organized a virtual 7 weekly STEM Career Series which impacted over 700 attendees worldwide and organized and moderated a two-day Women in STEM forum with over 300 attendees. She also helped create PPE and sneeze guards for local health providers. In addition, she created and organized a virtual Global Engineering Challenge where 65 teams participated worldwide. Overall, she is an amazing & inspiring role model. She often speaks at events and was the keynote speaker for the SWE Conference in San Diego in Feb 2020. Even though Madalyn is just a rising senior in high school, you will not find a more hard-working & dedicated champion for STEM diversity. She is truly a rockstar for STEM! Andrew Rose: President, Chairman & CEO of Compare.com Over the last 12 years, Andrew Rose has worked with a number of insurance companies including Progressive, Countrywide and Elephant Insurance in several high-profile capacities. His experience in the industry gives him unique insight as the head of Compare.com—an auto insurance comparison engine designed to bring real auto insurance comparison to the U.S. A graduate of Virginia Tech and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia (UVA), Andrew Rose saw Compare.com as a chance to help the average American consumer find a great price for auto insurance, as well as great coverage. Compare.comis the first and largest true comparison website, which works directly with insurance carriers to provide customer's side-by-side comparison for car insurance. It was the Admiral Group, plc that introduced him to the concept. While working for the Admiral Group, Andrew Rose saw firsthand how well auto insurance comparison worked. The Admiral Group operates Confused.com, an auto insurance comparison website founded in 2001 and based in Great Britain. While working for the Admiral Group, Andrew learned the ins-and-outs of Confused.comand how they worked directly with auto insurance companies to deliver real comparison to consumers. This education would propel the creation and launch of Compare.com. Of course, Andrew Rose is more than his job. He's a happily married family man, Ironman triathlete, and avid marathoner. He's completed the Boston Marathon four times as well as twelve full and twenty+ half Ironman triathlons in addition to more than a dozen other marathons. Andrew has also been an active volunteer for FIRST LEGO League (FLL) in Virginia and DC for the past 14 years. FLL is a robotics competition for elementary and middle school students which makes use of the LEGO Mindstorms system. During his years as an FLL volunteer Andrew has served on the State Board for the competition, run the state and regional tournaments, emceed the State Championships, and coached teams for his children. The championship tournament in Virginia and DC has achieved the status of the largest robotics competition in the world several times, with over 100 teams competing.
