The K League United Podcast finally turns its attentions to the second tier this week as K League 2 gets underway on Saturday. Matthew Binns and Andrew Farrell are on the podcast this week, looking over the state of K League 2 ahead of the 2025 campaign.   They wont' be alone though, as our writers join them to give their views on teams in a division that is bigger than ever! Mike Brandon, Michael Redmond, Diogo Valente, Luke Evans and Paul Neat all make appearances to help cover the expanded team list.   [READ: K League 1 Team Guide]   After all that, there's time to discuss title predictions as well as who else we think may scrape a promotion before then continuing the conversation over on Patreon to go through the K League 1 action at the weekend.   There's also the announcement of our latest kit giveaway. In celebration of 10 years of K League United, we look to give away a match-worn home shirt from our website's first interviewee, FC Anyang's Austin Berry. To stand a chance of winning this 2015 Anyang kit, simply follow us and reshare the related social media post of this podcast, or share this page with @KLeagueUnited tagged, for your chance to enter the draw with the prize set to be drawn in March.

Clay Diet  Various methods, main staple is eating bentonite clay Made from ash, used for many healthy purposes- skin for example Weight loss Concept It swell in stomach to 2x the size to fill you up Attaches to heavy metals and “toxins” Star Power - Zoe Kravits was recommended Clay Diet to lose 20ls for “The Road Within” It worked, but she said it  “Felt awful” “I was a space cadet and sick” “ I don't recommend this to anybody “Ate a mason jar of clay and purred vegetables and ran a lot” Complications Studies do show it causes abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Can perforate bowels and cause acute kidney damage Binds to everything good and bad Slows calcium and iron absorption Can slow down medications Supports Often Say “Proven” to attach to fat, in rat models. But what’s wrong with fat? And I’m not a mouse Aboriginals do it! Australian Aboriginals do it for weight loss where most do it to combat hunger Australian aboriginals have some of the highest Diabetes and heart disease in the world for tribesmen Comparing a healthy habit to one of the least healthy of their kind? The Fletcherizing Diet One of the Original Fad Diets Medical Definition of fletcherize to reduce (food) to tiny particles especially by prolonged chewing Origins of the chew for 32x model “Nature will castigate those who don’t masticate,” claimed Dr. Horace Fletcher,  Concept Chew all food 100x, even liquids so they can “properly mix with saliva for digestion” People lost weight Very slow eating period Got full with eating less Got tired of chewing for so long and would eat less Also original who touted to know what it is that you are eating He heavily claimed and announced that this diet can make your feces smell better.  For everybody who cares about that… Famous Fletcherizers- Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and John D. Rockefeller  There are known benefits to chewing more Slows us down so we eat less Allows us to enjoy our food instead of inhale and vanish We absorb more nutrients Whole corn or spinach in your stool? Didn’t absorb it,  you eat to quickly Chew everything 32 times compared to 10 and… Took almost twice as long to eat Ate 12% less 240kcal on a 2000kcal diet Significant enough to lose weight Fletcher made millions and then a new dietary theory came out called “Calorie Counting”   The Master Cleanse, AKA The Lemonade Diet AKA The Diuretic diet There are a ton of variations All basically come down to 5 to 10 days of lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper into water approximately 600kcal Essentially just ingesting diuretics Does it work? Can lose 10 to 20 pounds of WATER weight relatively quickly An original bonus was cited as you“Don’t need teeth” Should I do it Will gain the weight right back once they eat food and water again Can rapidly lose muscle when in extreme caloric deficit  Common side effects of fatigue, nausea, dizziness, dehydration, stomach pains Sounds like montezuma's revenge from school to me (Vitamin C and Magnesium)   The Five Bite Diet Eat whatever you want -- but only five bites of it. No breakfast except black coffee Eat anything you desire for lunch and dinner, but only 5 bites of each Drink as much 0 Calorie fluids as youd like The concept is smaller portions to an extreme Very difficult to get even 1000kcal in if you try Doesn't matter what you eat, just how much Standard day is Breakfast- Black coffee and a multivitamin Lunch- 3 bites of a burger and 2 of a salad Dinner- 3 bites of macaroni and cheese and 2 of apple pie Sounds like justified anorexia Better off not eating (metabolically speaking) then eating so little and being malnourished and rapidly decrease your metabolism   Cigarettes For Weight Loss Smoking kills 1 in 5 people Has been known for decades it is an appetite suppressant Nicotine specifically  Is a common reason for teenagers, mostly female, to start smoking Common reason why people don’t stop smoking after they start Eating disorder patients are 250% more likely to smoke Suppresses hunger, but are smokers thinner? Depends Heavy smokers tend to be more obese So its not the more you smoke the lighter you get Light smokers tend to be thinner then nonsmokers Smoking increases viceral fat Correlated with metabolic syndrome and diabetes type 2 Smokers usually gain weight when they quit No longer suppressing appetite Tend to eat food instead of smoking to kick the habit But what about Just Nicotine?  Patches, pills, etc Stimulant that releases epinephrine  Fight or flight/sympathetic response Increases heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose levels Raises metabolic rate Can wan hunger  Activate reward center in brain opposed to donuts Increases blood glycogen and dopamine to curve appetite Is addicting and can easily cause side effects in large doses Stomach and headaches Dizziness, tremors Nausea, high blood pressure     www.functionised.com/hhh.html   FB: @Functionised IG: @Functionised

Fun Friday at Functionised is hosted by Jim Goetz, Chantea Goetz with weekly special guest, Dr. Michael Brandon. Intro- Like diet, we look for east-outs and magic pills for exercise Fads come routinely We look for the least effort, ideally entertainment involved, and promises of maximum results Typically don’t work Wii fit- The whole console had wide spread popularity Cruise lines, retirement homes, day camps, because “active” Wii Fit and Wii Sports Fit- predomenitly on or near a balance board Told weight, BMI, and Wii fit age Based mostly on balance- important but not major part of fitness and exercise health Different modes Strength- single leg extension, russian twist, lunges, plank Yoga- balance Aerobics- jog in place or hula hooping with wii-mote in pocket to track Does have progressions, increased time or repetitions of an exercise Better than “traditional” games for health, but not exercise Wii Sports- calories tracked Wii tennis- 5 calories a minute, real tennis, 8kcal Wii boxing 7kcal/min, Light sparring 11kcal Almost half, but better than nothing Not an exercise replacement Entertaining and easily marketable Hawaii Chair “If you can sit, you can get fit” Oscillates up to 2800rpm in Hula hoop style It does all the work, but proper seating will give a mild core burn from trying to maintain balance Suggested to do at work for phone calls, computer work, etc Ellen Show- Showed her having difficulty pouring water Work isn’t likely going to happen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHiqV... Maybe better for watching tv Hawaii Chair Commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_co... Meuler Belt- Huge in the early 1900’s as a sedentary exercise Stand still with a wide belt around you and gives a rapid and short vibration to and fro Thought was how vibration can cause contractions Validity like the vibe plate, but this just shook the external fat Would change belt position every few minutes to “target” different areas. Vomiting and heartburn was commonplace Don’t eat before you try 1 study showed it increased white blood cell count in the obese; science is unsure why Concept was spot training of the abdominals and buttocks Spot training doesn’t work, and this didn’t affect muscles anyway At best it could give a mild increase in tone as if one was to flex abs all day. Flexing is normal response to outside abdominal movement, like being punched when we tense ourselves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iet33... Here is a class of men using it from the 1930’s Shake weight- Designed to oscillate to “increase muscle activation during exercise” Great marketing tool due to the sexual nature Simply can’t use it and make it look normal Like making eye contact with a friend while eating a banana- hysterical Lacks 2 key elements of strength training Doesn’t work muscles in a full ROM There is no progressions such as increased resistance It has been shown to not increase muscle firing as the product suggests Can give some endurance and tone to forearms at best But so does the old brick tied to a stick method Horse Riding Fitness Power Ace- Company Commercial and box says: “Meant for anyone who wants to workout by riding a horse while watching TV in their living room” Do not attempt these moves without the machine or you may fall and hurt yourself” Meant to mimic the muscles engaged during horseback riding This does impact core and legs rather well on a horse It looks like a partial collapsible bipod with a seat that springs and wiggles lightly Like a far less aggressive mechanical bull that you put the motions into Advertised as working the quads, but the machine stands you up so legs are minimally affected You wiggle and thrust, looks incredibly sexual Lower back does a lot of the effort, and you can fall off if you “get into it” and thrust too hard If weak or inhibited core, could actually hurt your back on this Appears to poorly mimic riding anything, and doesn’t give much of a workout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtwZM... Jim Goetz and Dr. Mike Brandon of Functionised discuss the in's and out's of body fat, why you gain it, whats good about it, what's bad about it and how to remove excess. Woes of Fat Define fat- adipose, so body fat%, not bmi! Speaking white adipose here, not brown For men, a percentage of body fat greater than 25% defines obesity, with 21-25% being borderline. For women, over 33% defines obesity, with 31-33% being borderline. -other than being ugly, we get told to lose it, but why? Just to buy new clothes Physical Excess weight on joints, back, neck More difficult for correct posture which leads to more pain Hormones it effects- why they matter Leptin suppress hunger, when depleted increases obesity- Where does it come from/why does it stop Injections dont help. Ceiling for it and brain becomes resistant to it Does not increase leptin by decreasing food intake; rather, lack of leptin acts as a signal to increase food intake Obesity decreases sensitivity to it, so DM and obese have a harder time feeling full Aromatase- is released Converts test to estrogen- decreases metabolism, increases insulin resistance High estrogen issues Females- Homronal acne, depressed metabolism, irregular menstration, bloating, cold/itchy hands/feet, insomnia, headaches, low sex drive, increased breast and other cancer risks Males- gynecamastia, low sex drive, Erectile dsfunction, infertilaty Resistin- also released by epithelial cells, increased secretion with a high body fat percentage Directly increases insulin resistance- Increases production of LDL cholesterol Increases cardio vascular disease risk Appears that centralised/wastline adipose releases more than other locations Association with DMtype 2 and centralised obesity faster than booty fat Pro inflammatides- mainly from resistin Interlukin 1, 3, 6; tumor necrosis factor- Causes systemic long term inflammation, like food sensitivities too Inflammation basis for … Increases risk of rheumatoid conditions Neuro transmitters Serotonin is released with insulin secretion, mainly from carb diet which is VERY common in obesity. “Use too much” serotonin and we get a little depressed, eat more sugar to increase mood, becomes less effective so do more frequently Part of the addiction cycle of carby foods Leads to many more poor choices when depressed Serotonin and dopamine Decreased transporters, so it gets harder to use these happy hormones/endorphions Comorbidities- things that are increased risk and caused by or in part by obesity Heart disease DM- resistin, and poor life style habits Cancer- hormonal cancers more so, but increased of all cancers since others are inflammatory Stroke - better chance surviving it...but also getting it Homron imbalances- stated above GI issues - inflammation of bowel, and then colon cancer, Dementia- Healing time? Depression- serotonin burn out www.functionised.comwww.fitlabnj.com Facebook: @functionisedInstagram: @functionised

Human Performance Following Concussion with Jim Goetz, Chantea Goetz, Mike Brandon and Dan Cardellichio   Seeking medical attention immediately following a concussion is key to recovery as when left undetected, concussions can result in long-term brain damage and may even prove to be fatal. While the majority of concussions are caused by falls, not sports, the number of sports related concussion continue to grow. In fact, the CDC has released reports that show the amount of reported concussions has doubled in the last 10 years. Sports related concussions are so detrimental as while the first hit can prove problematic, the second or third head impact can cause permanent long-term brain damage. These cumulative sports concussions are shown to increase the likelihood of catastrophic head injury leading to permanent neurologic disability by 39 percent! Human performance has been described as one’s capabilities when observed under set circumstances or conditions. Enhancement, on the other hand, is used to enhance capabilities to a higher degree to intensify or magnify performance. Our goal is to raise the capabilities of human performance to a higher degree following concussion. Goals for recovery following a concussion include: -Any reduction in symptom -Reduction of the Grade 3 finger-thumb to Grade 1 -Accuracy of finger-nose-finger with eyes closed bilaterally -Less than 5% discrepancy between head right and left -Saccadic latencies

While his favorite book list contains many success-oriented and personal-development classics, the traditional definition of achieving success (e.g. make a lot of money) is not what inspires or motivates King. He follows more of a “you aren’t doing well unless you’re also doing some good” line of thinking. King’s company has been built around the simple principle of do the right thing.” In 1999, Thom’s personal passion for food and his concern over the explosion of metabolic disease led him to found Steviva Brands, now known as Icon Foods, with a mission to stem the tide of “diabesity” by providing consumers healthy alternatives to sugar. Functional Nutritional Therapy- Christine Cernera

Our guest this week is Functional Nutritionist Christine Cernera. Her wellness journey has included many unpleasant side effects such as yo-yo weight loss, anxiety, fatigue and digestive issues. Christine has always recognized the importance of exercise but the missing piece for her has always been nutrition. In a world where it gets more and more confusing to know what we should eat, the realization, through Christines experience and education, that going back to whole, nutrient-dense, properly prepared foods was the key to her success and the success she works with and mentors.  Christine Cernera has a goal to empower individuals to reclaim their health through nutrition/lifestyle education and support. She wants everyone to be gifted with good health that comes from being mindful of what you eat while at the same time enjoying life. The two are not mutually exclusive. In practice, Christine begins with a thorough functional evaluation to identify organ systems under stress and then prioritize support accordingly. As each organ system is surrounded by a network (NEURO (brain), VASCULAR (blood vessel), or NEURO-LYMPHATIC (lymph vessels). When an organ system becomes stressed, blood and/or lymph surround these networks in an effort to draw the necessary nutrients to support the organ. This collection of fluid takes up space at the organ system and registers as tenderness in the body. The Functional Evaluation is completed by palpating a series of points identified to correlate to specific organs or systems in the body. Each client is given a scale of 0-10 and asked to rate their own tenderness. Each client's baseline is different and custom to your own body, but allows Christine to connect directly with the body's innate response to nutritional deficiencies. Lingual-Neuro Testing Lingual-Neuro Testing is a biofeedback tool that enables Christine to determine the usefulness of a nutritional supplement before it is dispensed. LNT accesses the body's innate ability to discriminate between what it needs, and what it does not need, in order to correct a specific problem, for example, a weak organ or a nutritional deficiency. This simple and effective technique makes the difference between a generic nutritional therapy plan and a personalized one.   The Functional Evaluation gives Christine the ability to communicate directly with your body and understand what you need and customize a nutritional plan to support optimal health. Be the first to see world class workout programs, high quality recipes, videos, how Dr. Mike Brandon lost 30 lbs in 5 days step by step and m uch much more!!!!    New Theories Behind The Real Cause of Lymes Disease and Possible Natural Treatments Jim Goetz   Since the 1970's in the town of Lymes, Connecticut, individuals have been coming down with a mysterious illness diagnosed as many things. The symptoms are pretty much the same. They include: fatigue, muscle pain, weakness, twitching, spasms, restless leg syndrome, mental fog, joint pain, swelling, and tingling in the extremities. (These symptoms sounds seriously like every night after my three times per day workouts). Because of the grouping of symptoms, health officials believed they needed to find the cause of this new "disease". A few years later, an individual who had these symptoms stated they reported having a tick on them a few weeks prior to the symptoms occurring. Researchers found this specific type of tick to carry the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and "hallejuia" an answer was found (though it was based on mere observation). Lymes has traditionally been treated by using a very large dose full spectrum anti-biotic. Patients often get better at first giving doctors the impression that the drugs are working. This is called a Herxheimer reaction. That is symptoms reverse. Now with this dose of antibiotics, your body is also losing beneficial bacteria that your body needs to function and yes, even think. Unfortunately antibiotics at times casue viruses to strengthen. In this case, this is true.  Recently there has been some speculation that Lymes disease is also caused by other bacteria such as Bartonella or parasites such as Babesia. None of these however or Borrelia actually seem to be responsible for the actual symptoms of Lymes disease. Someone may test positive for one of these bacteria or parasites and have Lymes disease but this again may only be another observational study and the two may have nothing to do with another. This is like someone observing an individual with a cold having eaten a pizza just the day prior and no other foods. Therefore colds must be caused by pizza. This simply is not the truth.  The symptoms of Lymes disease are the same as those who have Epstein-Barr, HHV-6 and it's varous strains. Some also test positive for cytomegalo virus. These are all viruses!!! Exactly!!!!! Lymes disease may actually be a virus that most of us have that is actually triggered by events in life.  All of these items in some way or another lower ones immune response. As a result, a dormant virus can take over. These possible causes include (but not limited to: -mold -mercury based dental mamlgam fillings -mercury in general -emotional events such as the loss of a loved one or traumatic event -bites or stings -virus enabling prescripton medications (see benzodiazepines) -overprescribed medications -recreational drug abuse -overly stressful chronic situations such as finances -lack of sleep -poor nutrition -chemicals in ones environment such as carpets or carpet cleaning products, paint, etc. -runoff -swimming (chlorine is highly toxic in pools as are red algae blooms in the ocean)   Some natural treatments include but are not limited to: -thyme (kills viruses on contact). I often use this in a diffuser and breathe it in the room, especially in fall and winter. I have no proof it works but know I do not get sick often. -lemon balm (kills co-factors of viruses). It's also naturally soothing and used in many good bed time/ relaxation formuals. -zinc (lowers inflammation and may raise immune levels) If you put a zinc losenger in your mouth though and it tastes highly metallic, your zinc levels may already be normal and therefore risk toxicity. -licorice root (impairs viral movement and ability to reproduce) -L-lysine (same as licorice root). However, L-lysine is used during herpes outbreaks as it appears to be directly inverse to L-Arginine, a vasodialator. L- Arginine and foods containing this amino acid are to be avoided during times of outbreaks. -Lomatium root (removes pathogens from the body). -reishi mushrooms (increases lymphocytes, and neutrophils, which are white blood cells responsible for immune function). -silver hydrosol (kills viruses on contact) -astaxanthin (restores neurological function) This is found in krill supplements and Green Vibrance. Both area a staple in the diet of the madscientist himself. -nascent iodine (strengthens the encocrine system)   Swing Away Depression and Anxiety Dr. Mike Brandon Jumping on a trampoline, swinging in the park, running in circles, and rolling down hills may sound like a day's summer schedule for a child, but what about as a way to help combat depression, anxiety, and memory deficits in us all. Our body's vestibular system is what helps us with our balance and equilibrium and allows us to do things like walking and standing upright, standing on one leg, walk across a tight rope etc. The majority of this system is small structures buried within our ears which works with our eyes and specific regions of our brain. It gets strengthened via body and head movements like rolling, jumping, spinning, and so forth. We rarely think about it unless there's an issue like becoming dizzy or losing balance, but clearly this system is important for us. Could you imagine trying to go through a day without being able to walk 10 feet without falling to the side? Science has found however that having a healthy balancing system may also help with stress, anxiety and depression. It appears that having vestibular dysfunction, like dizziness or vertigo, can cause increased anxiety and stress, and even the reverse with having excess stress or anxiety disorders could cause dizziness or vertigo. So clearly they are related, but why does that matter? There was a study that took college students and gave them “swing time” every day, meaning they literally went to a park, sat on a swing and swung back and forth for a while. This caused all participants to have a positive change on their emotional state with depression, stress, and anxiety. This led me to think about children and the importance of recess. Its been over the news the past few years when it was shown that increased play time increased academic performance. This could be a big part as to why. Children's brains are still developing, so having kids “just be kids” and run, roll, and jump, is quite important so they have a better chance at staying happy and coping with the stress that inevitably arises in life. Currently, kids don't play as much as they used to due to tv, video games, and similar activities, so their vestibular system which is linked to strong emotional control and satisfaction may not get fully developed. Add to that then how most of us as adults live rather sedentary lives and sit most of the day, so we aren't strengthening our equilibrium and balance systems either. The good news is, that it appears that even as adults we can help ourselves by “just being a kid”.  So maybe I wouldn't advice grandpa to go hop on a merry-go-round or start doing flips on the trampoline, but gently rocking in a chair or standing on a wobble board for a while may help his occasional panic attacks or make him smile a bit more. It shouldn't be surprising then that most people enjoy things such as swinging and spinning. Everybody wants to stay young, and though we have yet to biohack a secret for that, there's clearly benefits by following a child's example in this case. So go make yourself a little dizzy, a little happy, and as always, BioHack on!   References: Dalton, S. (2016, May 11). Youth Fitness: Exercise Helps Children Excel in School. We are joined this week by top New Jersey personal trainer Jared Rappoport. Jared currently trains at Ovox Gym in Morganville, New Jersey. Jared specializes in both body building and total body transformations. He has been a personal trainer for over a decade and there's no slowing down now.  Clients and patients alike both bring up different ideas and concepts they hear about that they are unsure about.  As individuals are always lookig for the competitive edge, more and beginning to turn to SARMS, which is an acronym for Selective Androgen Modulator Receptors. These chemicals have been around since the 1940's but really only have become a part of the main stream (filled with controversey) since the 1990's. The initial purpose of the development of SARMS was to treat a plethora of diseases such as cancer, hypogonadism, osteoporosis, Alzheimers, catexia and more.  The best way to describe how SARMS work is to think of them as a puzzle piece. These puzzle pieces can only fit into specific slots in your body (receptor sites). Therefore, SARMS may float around the body and do nothing until they attach themselves to the appropriate receptor site, unlocking specific aspects of ones DNA such as preventing muscle and bone wasting.  In comparing SARMS to testosterone cypionate, it appears SARMS may actually be 200 times more anabolic and 80 times more selective for the receptor sites. This means side effects are limited at best as compared to anabolic steroids for the treatment of diseases.  While most research on SARMS has been conducted in lab mice, phase 1 trails on humans have begun. This is why SARMS are only available for purchase for research purposes only and not for human consumption.  Some of the most popular SARMS are: LGD-4033- prevents catexia by enhancing lean muscle mass and reduces body fat. MK-2866- also prevents catexia by maintaining and increasing lean body mass and recomping. S4- designed to cure osteoporosis and increases bone density RAD140- possible cure for Alzheimers A substance which is in the SARMS family but would be considered more of a distant cousin as it's not technically a SARM is GW 501516. This may greatly increase ones physical endurance and is one of the two substances used and detected that had top 2017 Cross Fit Games athlete Ricky Gerard disqualified, suspended and outcasted by his peers. However, until the detection of this substance, he was giving 3 time Cross Fit Games Champion Mat Fraser, a run for his money. Some benefits of SARMS are: Non-toxic. Prevents calcium depletion (bone loss). Decreases the risk of prostate dysfunction.  Will not interfere with ones HPTA. Will not convert to estrogen. Some human performance benefits include: Increased muscle strength. Increased muscle size. Tissue selective. Inhibits cancer cell division. Regulates libido. Side Effects of SARMS I would like to be able to comfortably list the known side effects of SARMS but in reality, thus far long term research has not been available to understand what these effects may be. Any known side effects may occur due to unregulated SARMS being laced with anabolic steroids and pro-hormones. This is why if a qualified individual does research on SARMS, they should ensure the laboratory they obtain their research chemicals from is up to par.   Ethics of Using SARMS, HGH and Steroids in Sports This is a highly controversial and debatable topic.  Individuals ask all the time what they should take. My advice (Jim Goetz) is to wake up each morning and have a very large glass of hard work. One should have a steady diet of determination and persistence. Supplements, SARMS, steroids, HGH and the like are often relied upon to get an athlete to the level of super human. However, when relied upon, one never achieves their true potential. While certain substances such as human growth hormone may prolong the careers of many athletes, especially foot ball players, due to the ability to speed healing, it is still a banned substance in the NCAA and National Football League.  Any banned substance on the list provided by the World Anti- Doping Association should be avoided by any athlete competing in a sport they may be tested in. When one tests positive, they not only lose the chance to maximize their profits to play a game, but may result in suspension and become ostrasized by your peers.  So many athletes believe they will never be caught. No one is smarter than the system as someone some where will do something and then rat them out.  While some substances may actually be legal in certain sports, remember that how one obtains them must also be legal. Buying steroids from the shady guy in the gym is illegal!!!  As we state in the beginning of each show, ensure you contact a qualified and good health care provider and not get your information from uneducated meat heads on a blog somewhere that have never truly accomplished anything in their lives other than huge arms that may have impressed girls back in undergrad. Anti-Aging This topic could literally be the topic all podcasts are dedicated to as it is such an emerging field in medicine yet humans have been chasing anti-aging and ways to remain young forever since the dawn of time. From Ponce de Leon and his search for the Fountain of Youth to the mention of the philosophers stone going back to 300 A.D., mankind has been searching for ways to remain youthful. Why would one not want to remain youthful and vibrant for an eternity? Aging brings reduced cognitive function, diminished strength, speed and endurance, aches and pains and diseases and ultimately death. Why would anyone want this?  Some aspects of anti-aging are mere superficial remedies such as botox or using ceremides to reduce wrinkles. None of these treatments though slow down the reduction of telmomeres. It's been theorized that telomeres in our DNA reduce in length with age. It's like our internal clock. Once the telomeres are gone, the cell dies. Humans are made of cells. Therefore, once the telomere countdown ends, we die. Some methods though that are being realizes to help prolong life are not drug related. Believe it or not they are natural things we can do each and every day. Some believe that statins help prevent heart attacks but now being shown that not only do they not prevent heart attacks like previoulsy believed but reduce cognitive function, increase idiopathic muscular pains and even reduce longevity. The popular diabetes drug metformin is theorized to reduce the rate of telomere shortening. If one begins metformin at the age of three (3) they may life to 120 to 150 years of age. However, metformin does not come without side effects. Berberine has been shown to have these same effects as metformin though and without the harmful side effects. Other methods to delay telomere shortening are: -calorie restriction (see the biohackhumans podcast on intermittent fasting and the future podcast on autophagy). -proper anti-oxidant intake (not simply a cheap multi- vitamin). This may reduce aging through oxidation and fight reactive oxygen species (ROS). As we age, hormones are reduced. When we have lab work done, physicians typically look at ones hormone levels as compared to the age they are. One feels much different though at the age of 25 than they do at 65. Individuals may utilize hormone replacement therapy to match their hormones to that of the age of 25 and perform as they did at this age. Activities of daily living become easier and more fulfilling.  DHEA may improve memory, immune function, muscle mass, libido and the endocrine system. Melatonin is now being understood to have some anti- oxidant characteristics in addition to improve circadian rythms. While melatonin thus far has been unsuccessful in preliminary research to show increases in life span, it is being used now in cancer treatments (mega doses) and may improve ones daily life through increased cognitive function by improving sleep. Pregnenalone is another natural substance that is the precursor to 50 other hormones that are often reduced with age. .  In females, estrogen therapy has been shown to be beneficial to increase bone density and protects against heart disease.  Stem cell therapy may help regenerate cells to prevent cardiovascular disease and improve or eliminate autoimmune diseases. It has been found in preliminary research that messenchymal stem cells of younger donors (mice) estends the lifespan in older recipients. ALT-711 may be useful in preventing heart disease by reducing pulse prressure and improving arterial elasticity. This occurs through breaking advanced glycosylation end product crosslinks. There are some current anti-aging developments but not worth mentioning until further credible research is completed.  At the end of the day, so far there is no magic bullet of anti-aging. If the fountain of youth truly exists, then perhaps a glass of water each day from it will allow us to live for eternity. Until then, understanding the information listed above in addition to a diet that consists of organically grown produce rich in phytonutrients, a non-processed ketogenic diet, limiting alcohol intake, not smoking, and moderate exercise each day. Observational studies do show that individuals who laugh, smile and have purpose in life end up living longer than those who are unhappy and lack ambition.
