The choice for Dr. Mark to lead a healthier life came down to two reasons. One, if he was going to tell his patients to eat better and exercise more, he'd better be practicing what he preached. And two, since he didn't have the best genetics when it came to cardiovascular disease, he did not want to put his family through what he saw his parents and grandparents deal with as it related to their health and happiness. His research focuses largely on the relationship between people's environments that influence their mental health. He has conducted a number of longitudinal studies using cohorts of identical and fraternal twins, which allow him to tease apart the role of genetic vs. environmental factors in different psychiatric outcomes. The conversation  focuses mainly on recent twin studies Dr. Schaefer has done looking at the relationship between adolescent cannabis (i.e. marijuana) use, and psychosis. Fighting for people to be able to sell low-risk foods, like cookies for instance, that they make in their own kitchens is really common sense to Lisa. Today's theme: Future of Childhood (in time for Children's Day) Perhaps the most obvious and yet perplexing thing about children's day is coming to the realisation that every man and living creature on this earth was once a child. It is something that is universal and encompasses us all - despite how we may feel about it. Children's Day is a day designed to celebrate that concept of youth - a concept that often might go amiss were it not for such celebrations. For most of the world, official children's day holidays began in the 20th century. While most countries have an official children's day - not all celebrate them to the extent that we see here in South Korea where, of course, it is a public holiday for all. The Conversationalist with Professor Ross Thompson - Teaching Specialist, Early Childhood Education, University of Minnesota - Institute of Child Development - Podcast - Teaching with the Body in Mind co-host “We all want to provide our children with the best environment to thrive and realize their potential. But we can also take this too far and put excessive pressure on them. What could be the harm of this and how do we escape this trap?” “Children these days spend more time with gadgets and screens rather than playing outside putting dirt on their hands. How do you think this can change the childhood as we know it?” AND Karen Choi - Section Chief at Save the Children Korea, International Program Department “Starting from 2012, Save the Children Korea has annually published Child Well-Being Composite Index, with Institute of Social Welfare at Seoul National University. We can all agree with the need for child welfare, but why is it important to quantify their well-being and make it into an index?” “Tell us how we can take part in this year's International Children's Marathon held by Save the Children Korea, how we can help children in need by doing so.” A Few Minutes with Amos Never work for a company that makes you bring your own computer. Are you going to bring you own toilet paper? Chair? I knew a kid who started working at a company that made him bring his own personal laptop. I told him "If that breaks at work or on the way to work, do you think they'll buy you a new one?" Next week: Democracy / Election

I love working with the pigs, I love driving the tractors, I love attempting to fix the tractors, I love building fence, I love a lot about farming (even the dirty work), but I'm not a big fan of running the numbers and big time planning. What I'm trying to say is that I'm six years into my on-farm journey and I have never completed a business plan ... although I have started a few times. My thoughts on farm business planning have changed recently, as in they've done a complete 180º turn, and I'm in the process of working on my plan. The big question is why have I had such a change of heart ... The main reason for the my heart of change can be summed up in one phrase, "Something needs to change." I have some idea of things that could change on the farm that would help the business and the family, but I've come to the conclusion that a real life Farm Business Plan could really come in handy. I think it will be especially helpful when it comes to things like communication, taking emotion out of the decisions, goal setting, and plans for the future of the farm. There is one problem though ... I feel completely incapable of making a business plan! Luckily I have resources ... here they are: Building a Sustainable Business Workbook from The Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (This is the one that I'm using and I love it because not only does it have the information, but it has case studies from other farms as well) Online Worksheets from the workbook mentioned above ... Do you have any tips, tricks, or experiences when it comes to creating your Farm Business Plan? I'd love to continue the discussion in the comments below! As always, I want to thank you so much for listening and supporting the show with your encouragement and reviews on iTunes!
