For a brief moment, things look just as they were. Three siblings sit in a bedroom together, talking about the future. But the fate of Cair Mallplex, a real reunion, and the very possibility of tomorrow all rests on Valeria's shoulders. The moon sits on the horizon. Mum's the word. Featuring pirate puns, a voided warranty, and the return of cassette tapes. Trigger warnings for references to violence, family death, grief throughout. Discussion of surveillance, mention of police brutality and imprisonment. Discussion of identity/stolen identity. Brief discussion of police brutality. Discussion of mortality and bombs. Brief mention of gender dysphoria. Find us on our website at undertheelectricstars.com! Transcripts are available on our website. Despite filling more than half of places in Australian medical schools, women represent 45 per cent of all medical practitioners and just 36 per cent of specialists. Female representation dwindles further in many areas of clinical leadership, prompting what has been termed a “leaky pipeline”. It has been reported that women would progress at similar rates to men, and achieve similar remuneration, were it not for the time taken out from the profession to raise children. In this podcast we discuss what it would take to mitigate this so-called “motherhood penalty” through policy, workplace culture and better distribution of labour in the home. This discussion is important because it relates not just to the wellbeing and rights of individual medics, but also to the depth and diversity of the workforce.acity struggles to keep up with demand. At the beginning of the pandemic, we reported on the extreme inequality of the vaccine rollout to low income countries. Their access was hindered because of a western patent system imposed globally through the World Trade Organization. At the time, activists tried to pass some activists tried to pass something called the TRIPS waiver, which would have suspended all patents related to COVID-19, not just for vaccines, but for all therapeutics and protective equipment. But as the world moved on from COVID-19, so did the efforts for equity. The TRIPS Waiver failed to provide access to medicines, and poor countries never received the vaccines they were promised. But the global south is fighting back. On today's show we look back at the failures of the early pandemic and we look forward, at new initiatives led by scientists and activists to circumvent patents and create broader access to medicines. But it's not about what she wants: it's about making the best of what she has. Mia Goth leads the Ti West-directed PEARL (2022). Are these relationships abuse? Geoengineering is defined as some emerging technologies that could manipulate the environment and partially offset some of the impacts of climate change. Seems like the perfect solution for a consumerist society that lives on instant gratification and can't stop polluting even at the risk of our futures, right? Well, let's slow down. Today we'll discuss the dangers of geoengineering and the ethics of the fact that these new technologies are being tested on Indigenous lands. The last few years have seen a wave of labor organizing as it becomes more and more clear to workers that their work is not expendable, but actually the heart of every business. From walkouts to unionization, workers at every workplace from Starbucks to Amazon to your local coffee shop have come together to build and exercise their power. In this episode we explore the issues that led organizers to take the initiative to organize their workplaces and the ins and outs and ups and downs of the process, and the backlash. On the forefront of the next labor revolution, we visit a coffee shop in Maine called Little Dog whose workers start to organize a union. Then we talk to Robert Chala from the UCLA Labor Center about the rise in unionization efforts among service workers and the social and cultural ethos in a post lockdown country that have led to this new wave of the labor movement. It is with a heavy heart that we share that Tokitae, a Southern Resident Orca held unjustly in captivity for 53 years, has passed away. To honor her memory, this week we are rebroadcasting our episode with Kurt Russo on the People Under the Sea, originally aired in October of 2018. This conversation explores the powerful memory held by Southern Resident orcas, the threats they face from vessel noise, chemical pollutants, and declining Chinook salmon population, the health of the Salish Sea, and the efforts of the Lummi Nation to return Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut (also known as Tokitae/Lolita), from where she was being held captive at Miami Seaquarium, to her natal waters in the Salish Sea. Tokitae's life ended while in captivity, but we hope that her memory may serve to inspire the fight for right-relationship and reciprocity with our more-than-human-kin. Kurt Russo is the executive director of Se'Si'Le, an Indigenous-led nonprofit dedicated to the perpetuation and practical application of Indigenous ancestral knowledge. Kurt has worked with Indigenous communities since 1978 in the areas of sacred site protection, Indigenous treaty rights, environmental cross-cultural conflict resolution, and the intertextualization of ways of knowing nature. He was co-Founder and Executive Director of the Florence R. Kluckhohn Center for the Study of Values and the Native American Land Conservancy, helped establish the International Indigenous Exchange Program (Northwest Indian College), the Sacred Lands Conservancy, and the Foundation for Indigenous Medicine. He has a BS in Forestry from the University of Montana, an MS in Forestry from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of California (Riverside). He is a veteran and served in Vietnam where he worked with Montagnard Indigenous communities.Music by Monplaisir and Amoeba.
