In this episode of the DealQuest Podcast, Gabriel Suarez, founder of Natural Life Franchise Company, shares his 20-year entrepreneurial journey, focusing on the rapid growth of his natural wellness business. From starting with a single store to scaling to 29 locations, Gabriel provides insights into building a franchise system, navigating the challenges of financing in the CBD space, and the importance of strategic partnerships. This episode is a must-listen for entrepreneurs and business leaders interested in franchising, natural wellness, or alternative business financing. Gabriel offers a candid look at the obstacles and triumphs he faced while positioning his company as a leading wellness brand.CREATING A SCALABLE BUSINESS MODELTo successfully scale a franchise, you need a business model that can be consistently replicated across all your locations. This involves creating comprehensive manuals outlining every aspect of running a franchise location, from daily operations and customer service standards to marketing and employee management. Robust training programs are essential to equip franchisees with the necessary skills and knowledge to run the business effectively, including how to use systems and tools, maintain quality, and adhere to brand guidelines. In addition, set up uniform processes and procedures that all franchise locations must follow. This could include standardized procedures for handling inventory, customer service, and sales transactions. Standardization helps maintain the quality and consistency of the franchise's products and services across all locations. As your franchise grows, continuously refine and adapt your systems. What works for a few locations might not work for many. Regularly review and update your processes to address new challenges and ensure that all franchisees can succeed.OVERCOMING FINANCIAL CHALLENGES IN THE CBD SECTORBusinesses involved in selling CBD or similar products often face significant challenges when seeking traditional financing. Many banks and lenders are hesitant to work with businesses that have any connection to hemp or cannabis, even if the business's primary focus isn't cannabis. The red tape can really slow things down. So, If there are potential issues (like selling CBD products), it's better to address them upfront to avoid wasting time and resources later in the process.Traditional loans might be out of reach, but there are other ways to get funding, like from investors or private lenders. Private lending involves securing loans from individuals or private entities. These lenders are often more flexible with their criteria, making them a good option for businesses that struggle to meet the strict requirements of conventional lenders. However, private loans might come with higher interest rates and more stringent repayment terms, so it's crucial to weigh these factors carefully.THE IMPACT OF STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS IN FRANCHISINGInitially, you may not get the perfect fit, but focus on finding individuals with an entrepreneurial mindset who understand the basics of business. They should possess strong management skills, financial literacy, and the ability to operate independently while following the franchise system. As the franchise grows, the initial systems and processes might need adjustments. Early on, it might be about selling franchises to anyone interested, but over time, it's important to refine the criteria for selecting franchisees. This involves identifying the ideal profile for franchisees, which may include assessing their alignment with the brand's values, their entrepreneurial mindset, and their ability to contribute to the brand's long-term vision. Franchisees with a personal connection to the brand are more likely to be enthusiastic, engaged, and dedicated to the success of their franchise. For Natural Life, this means finding individuals who believe in the benefits of natural wellness products and are committed to promoting a healthier lifestyle. UTILIZING CROWDFUNDING EFFECTIVELYInstead of relying solely on traditional investors or franchisees, crowdfunding allows individuals who are passionate about the brand to invest in it, even if they aren't in a position to become franchisees themselves. For businesses, this method helps them reach a new level of expansion, which can lead to better terms and less equity dilution when they eventually seek larger, more professional funding rounds.Equity crowdfunding is often not the final large capital raise but serves as a stepping stone to larger funding rounds. It can take a business from its current state to a significant growth milestone (e.g., from dozens to hundreds of locations). This growth prepares the business for more substantial investment, ensuring that when larger capital is introduced, it is used wisely and efficiently. Successful crowdfunding campaigns typically resonate with a passionate and engaged community. It's essential for the business to be niche-oriented, where potential investors feel a connection or strong interest in the product or service, making them more likely to invest.BUILDING A SUPPORTIVE NETWORK FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SUCCESSBuilding and maintaining a strong network is essential throughout your entrepreneurial journey. Suarez attributes much of his success to strategic relationships and mentorships, noting that his network has accelerated his business growth. The idea that "your network is your net worth" is reinforced, particularly in entrepreneurial endeavors. Networking isn't just about making contacts; it's about building meaningful relationships that can support you in various ways—whether it's through advice, introductions to potential partners, or just moral support. Joining entrepreneurial communities like the Entrepreneur's Organization can amplify these benefits, fostering a supportive environment where like-minded individuals share experiences and best practices. These groups provide essential support, share best practices, and help entrepreneurs navigate challenges that their non-entrepreneurial friends or family might not understand.Tune into Episode 305 to learn how Gabriel Suarez scaled Natural Life into a successful wellness franchise, overcame financing challenges, and strategically partnered for growth. Today, I wanted to introduce you to someone who has been a big part of my own spiritual journey along the mystical path over the past several years. author, photographer, and hedgewitch, Sally Morningstar. I've wanted to include conversations about finding the spiritual path, and walking it with our dogs becauseI believe a big part of why dogs choose us is because throughout time they have played the most beautiful role of walking us home to our true selves. Throughout her life, Nature has been Sally Morningstar's greatest teacher. Her deep love of the wyrd and the wild is the inspiration behind her writing, photography, and magical mentoring  of those seeking to live consciously and mindfully upon this Earth. From the age of 18 Sally began her own search for spiritual answers, which led her to psychic teachers and spiritual mentors in both the Eastern and Western Mystery Traditions, including Vipassana, Zen, Sati (the way of mindfulness) Dzogchen, Shamanism and even saw her becoming a High Priestess in Wicca. Ultimately, though none of that felt right for her until she discovered a sense of home within hedgewitchcraft, which, at its core, is based upon creating right relationship with all of Nature and her Creation. What I love about Sally's story is that she often talks about how she has been a hedgewitch all her life without realising it until her later years, and that that is often they way it goes when we are meant to walk a particular path. That the path is always there, we just may not have noticed it until we arrive at that place of knowing.I n our conversation, Sally talks about her personal journey and what it means to follow the old ways in our modern context. We talk about what magic really is, how we are all a part of it, and how the most magical path of life is the journey of self-discovery. Sally also shares how her sweet 19-yr old canine companion, Rosie Dumpling, has been key to her path. Over the last 100 years and more medicine has determined that if it doesn't use big pharma as a partner it isn't the kind of medicine that is good for us.  Lab drugs have been proven to be more dangerous than anyone could have imagined and now people are looking to continue this artificial life into an artificial death as a result of the negative impact living artificially has had on us.  We are killing people while nature is never allowed to do it.  We are living in a world where the implementation of a ‘humanocracy' , as described by Klaus Shwab and the new global elitist technocrats, is the end product which eventually will be our undoing.  Nature is what provides us with common sense through the non-logical aspects of our brain, and as a result we need to go back to what is good for humanity and not for artificial medicine and governing that would see algorithms ruling them in politics and medicine while love and empathy and the natural life and death on Earth is vilified. All views presented are based on credible sources, but they are explained through the individual's viewpoint.  Doing your own research while integrating new information is always important when forming your own viewpoint. ‘I just got so disheartened seeing people get so confused and there's so much green washing and so much marketing… people, clients of mine would go out trying to take on what we've done in a session, and they would think that they were doing the right thing and they came back and I'm like oh so close, so close. And they'd just slightly miss the mark, and then just watching their face, I was just like this is not ok. So yeah, I decided to create Jivita which is an online platform for all organic natural products. And I suppose the difference for my business partner and I Katherine Bond, is that we wanted to create a space that had zero greenwashing, that it is what it says on the tin, literally, wholly, rawly, honestly.' ~ Kirsty McDaide Kirsty McDaide, a playful Pom living in Melbourne, has over 17 years full time clinical experience as a holistic exercise and lifestyle coach. Utilising the incredible knowledge taken from her CHEK training, along with her intuition, Kirsty sets up the framework to invite people to experience deep healing throughout their bodies, hearts and minds. “When people realise what they are actually capable of. When they experience what being in less or no pain feels like. The glint they get in their eyes when they realise that thing that was holding them back. That moment, that's why I love this work. The dance all around that is pretty magical too' Jivita. A Natural Life, Made Easy (her online organic store) sprouted as a natural extension of living and coaching a natural life. Watching people get confused and dishearten when navigating their way through the maze of reducing chemicals in their lives, drove Kirsty to create.  She is honoured and humbled to see Jivita come to life, to bring a honest and raw place for you to explore and take your health journey back into your own hands.   Her definition of Self Love is that you can look at it so many different ways but it is tapping into who you really are, your calling, finding the place that excites you, brings you exuberance, what feels right and often you will find it sits deep in your heart. Some products stocked by Jivita is Sheridan Austin's Foraged, Shroom To Improve (medicinal mushrooms), Sales Squared, Earth Star Collective (natural spray perfumes and insect repellent), Byron Bay Coffee, My Toxin Free, Twenty8, Waters Co, Helen Pardarin's Teas. Her favourite quote is from Glinda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz: ‘You have always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself.' Antony Adare from Natural Life is our featured guest on episode 103 of the Bees with Ben podcast. Almost 30 years ago the chance discovery of a native beehive in a Sydney backyard developed into a daily source of fascination for Antony, who soon established a hobby hive for himself. Then in 1994, a Japanese scientist published a paper extolling the anticarcinogenic properties of propolis, which resulted in booming sales in Japan, where a small bottle of propolis could sell for up to $800. Having used propolis to treat cuts, abrasions and sore throats in his own family, Antony knew that it worked. He began to talk to people in the industry, and eventually launched his first two products, a propolis and manuka honey spray and a propolis tincture; so in 1996 the Natural Life brand was born. Antony managed to get those first two products onto shelves in Sydney airport, which proved a masterstroke, as a single Japanese tourist would often purchase all the stock, meaning there was little need for marketing! Over time, new products were added including royal jelly capsules, propolis candy and toothpaste and Australian manuka honey. Natural Life now sells to Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE, Vietnam and Kuwait, as well as to Japan, China and Korea. There is also a solid customer base in the Middle East, and prior to the onset of Covid, Natural Life's products were in all duty free stores and Asian markets around Australia. Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulations are amongst the toughest in the world, and Natural Life works continuously with manufacturers, suppliers and regulators to ensure the products remain of premium quality and potent activity. But it hasn't all been plain sailing. Retail closures due to Covid resulted in a 40% drop in sales. Antony recalls that the whole travel industry ‘evaporated' meaning that he had to push the online side of the business. And although the airports have reopened, we are yet to see a real influx of Asian tourists, who traditionally drive sales. Furthermore, Antony says whereas propolis is big in pharmacies across Europe, he is banging his head against a wall trying to get propolis products into health food stores in this country. Consequently, he has taken it upon himself to educate Australians about the benefits of propolis, in the hope of generating a significant domestic market. Antony says he would love see propolis in more stores, as this would increase demand, which in turn would provide extra income for beekeepers. Just before Covid struck, Natural Life released their ‘Wild Bee' skin care range, which is 100% Australian produced, and combines royal jelly, propolis from native stingless bees, Australian manuka honey and botanicals collected by Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. www.naturallife.com.au

Podcast Intro: Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the world's most commonly used weed killer. Over 300 million pounds of glyphosate-based herbicide are sprayed on farms and foods yearly. Agrochemical companies claim that glyphosate is safe for humans, animals, and the environment. But scientific studies suggest otherwise.  Glyphosate has created a deadly disruption of the gut microbiome. Its effect on protein synthesis and the body's ability to use and transport sulfur has greatly affected human health for the past decade.  In this episode, Dr. Stephanie Seneff talks about the effects of Glyphosate and how it is destroying our Health and Environment. She also talks about what happens if you don't eat organic food and its immense effect on the human body. What you'll get out of tuning in: Sulfate is a vastly overlooked molecule playing many crucial roles in human metabolism. Glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) greatly disturbs sulfate homeostasis in the body. Many biologically active molecules containing carbon rings transport sulfate throughout the body. Heparan sulfate is a complex sulfated polysaccharide that populates the extracellular matrix of most cells and is essential for the lysosomes to recycle cellular debris. It also controls neurodevelopment in the brain. Heparan sulfate deficiency in the brain ventricles is a characteristic feature of autism in humans and mice. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter whose deficiency is associated with obesity, depression, and violent behavior. Serotonin is produced in large quantities in the gut and then sulfated before being transported to the brain. Cholesterol sulfate, synthesized in the skin in response to sunlight, is another important source of sulfate for the brain and the body. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase synthesizes nitric oxide and sulfur dioxide, switching between the two based on received signals from the blood. Nitrate and sulfate are the yin and yang controlling blood flow. Why you should eat Organic Foods What is Glyphosate How Chemicals and Pesticides affect the Human Body How the Body Breaks down Glyphosate Why Organic Foods are Essential to the Human Body How Glyphosate is destroying our Health and Environment What happens when you ferment the cruciferous? She will be less protective of the food she's putting in their body. And it's all these breakdowns that happened in human consciousness.  Cate shares the article in The New York Times that their idea to help farmers is number one.   Cate says that the number one thing people think people can do is get involved with local farmers, promote organic, pay more, eat less, and eat healthily. We have to always think about safety first because there are so many chemicals we're putting out into the environment with inadequate study. We don't realize how toxic these things can be.” “Fermentation is complicated because it can actually introduce new metabolites that could be toxic. But it also takes away metabolites that are toxic. Things are not toxic if your livers are working. Enzymes in the liver are crucial for metabolizing many of these complex molecules that are made by these microbes, and so it becomes liver toxic if the liver can't use those enzymes to break it down.” “As you're not being poisoned, your body can handle things like sunlight very well and use it to its advantage to using it as a source of energy. But the things that you need to do that get messed up by the poisons, then it becomes toxic.” “Go buy organic and explain to your neighbors and relatives why they should also go buy organic and get them to do it.” Guest:  Stephanie Seneff Dr. Stephanie Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. She has a BS degree from MIT in biology and MS, EE, and Ph.D. degrees from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Since 2008, she has authored over three dozen peer-reviewed journal papers related to biochemistry and toxicology and has delivered numerous slide presentations at conferences around the world. Darcey Steinke is the author of five novels and a memoir, as well as most recently, the fragmentary investigation, Flash Count Diary: Menopause and the Vindication of Natural Life. Her work has been described as suburban Gothic and frequently borrows from her own life, drawing on her complicated relationship with her late mother, a one-time model and pageant girl, and the distant figure of her father–a Lutheran pastor. In her novel Sister Golden Hair, the narrator is a teenager whose father used to be a pastor, and whose mother was once a beauty queen. The protagonist of her novel, Jesus Saves is haunted by her mother's misery, but it was her second novel, Suicide Blonde, a candid, deeply poetic tale of sexual exploration published in 1992, that turned Steinke into a literary sensation, elevating her into the company of celebrated outlaw writers, like William Burroughs and Kathy Acker. She says, “Questions about my relationship to the universal force or God, or how we're supposed to be oriented to this life or how we're meant to live with the fragility of the human body, these questions are central to me, these are the questions that drive my work.”

On episode 4 of the podcast, I'm talking with award-winning novelist, Dana Spiotta about her new novel Wayward. Wayward is a thought-provoking book that centers the life of Samantha “Sam” Raymond, a white American woman whose menopause journey coincides with her midlife crisis...or maybe menopause causes the crisis. In the story, Sam's life has just begun to come apart: “Trump has been elected, her mother is ill and her teenage daughter is increasingly remote. At fifty-two she finds herself staring into 'the Mids' - those night-time hours of supreme wakefulness where women of a certain age contemplate their lives. In Sam's case, this means motherhood, mortality, and the state of an unravelling nation." On a whim, Sam buys a decrepit old house, abandons her family, and tries to build a new life on her own terms. During my conversation with Dana - which includes no spoilers from the book -  we talk about her motivations for writing a book about menopause, the invisibility of women of a certain age, why we need to normalize conversations about the things that happen to our bodies, and Edith Bunker's menopause moment on All in the Family.  It's an honest and sometimes hilarious conversation that I hope gives listeners some useful food for thought on how we can all reframe menopause and continue the conversation that will liberate us from suffering in silence and alone.  At the end of the show you'll hear how you can win a free copy of Wayward, so be sure to listen all the way to the end of the episode.
