As broadcast Sept 7, 2023 with more hydraulic action and slow driving than mere mortals can handle. Tonight we pay tribute to the entirety of our first hour to the Latin/low rider soul inspirations that have continually provided that extra ease and Spanish flare to our favorite genre over the years. Nods to Sunny Ozuna, Fania Records, Sly Slick & Wicked, along with the new exponents in the movement such as Big Crown, Colemine, Bobby Oroza, Thee Sinseers, and many others on the playlist. Dan Lloyd joins us for our AMPED rock-centric 2nd hour, and lots to discuss in a busy week, with a new album out from Royal Blood, a great new single from Irish band Sprints, and Italy's Maneskin hitting the road once again.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Sunny & The Sunliners – Give It AwayNew Holidays – Maybe So Maybe NoThee Sineers – What's His NameThee Sacred Souls – Will I See You Again?Los Yesterdays – Who Made You You?Sly Slick & Wicked – Sho' NuffThe Devonns – Long Goodbye Part II (33:53)Aaron Frazer – Bring You A RingDurand Jones & The Indications feat Y La Bamba – Cruisin' to the ParqueThee Lakesiders – ParachuteBobby Oroza – Maybe, Maybe, MaybeLizette y Quevin – Grow Forever125th Street Candy Store – Silent HeartFrancisco Aguabella – Fantasy Part III (64:03)Royal Blood – Shiner in the DarkGaslight Anthem – Little FiresManeskin – Honey (Are U Coming?)Sprints – Up and ComerAngel Du$t – RacecarSmash Mouth – Walking on the SunPart IV (94:16)Perennial – DissolverDoom Scroll – Anoxic'68 – Removed Their HooksGeese – JesseBad Rabbits – Garden of Eden ft Rou ReynoldsRid of Me – Gutted

For our 2nd edition of our Top of The Drop (best albums of 2022) rundown, we highlighted some bigger acts that we didn't blurb in the article but also gave a nod to some acts we think are very worthy of a listen if you haven't familiarized yet. Tunes from Bey, SZA, Bobby Oroza, Say Sue Me, and Danielle Ponder are definite highlights, along with unexpected surprise Adeem The Artist, who definitly moved us with his fantastic album White Trash Revelry (and we don't even dig country).Tracklist Part I (00:00)Beyonce - PLASTIC OFF THE SOFABeyonce - MOVE feat Grace JonesSAULT - LionSAULT - The Greatest SmileSZA - Ghost in the MachineSZA - Gone Girl feat Phoebe BridgersPart II (30:03)Bobby Oroza - Loving BodyBobby Oroza - Make Me BelieveDanielle Ponder - Some of Us Are BraveDanielle Ponder - Someone Like YouHUNJIYA - OUTGROWN HUNJIYA - FAVORITEHUNJIYA - MAIN CHARACTERPart III (61:03)Adeem The Artist - CarolinaAdeem The Artist - Baptized in Well SpiritsBlack Country, New Road - ConcordeBlack Country, New Road - Chaos Space MachineMakaya McCraven - In These TimesPart IV (91:05)Say Sue Me - Still HereSay Sue Me - Photo of You Alvvays - Easy On Your OwnAlvvays - Lottery NoisesFontaines DC - Jackie Down The LineFontaines DC - I Love You
Our funk punk soul rock Thursday favorites vol 1 is (finally, mercifully) here! In the first of our three part series, Danno & Dan Lloyd go over the first of their favorites in the soul and rock worlds for this year. The creme de la creme of 2022 features heavy hitters and first timers making a mark like Adrian Quesada, Say She She, Mark Evich, Bobby Oroza, in the former area of the matrix, and then in hour 2 it's highlights from Yard Act, Wet Leg, Big Thief, and many, many more.TracklistPart I (00:00)Object Heavy – Righteous WalkSwatkins – Don't Tell You That EnoughAdrian Quesada feat Ikebe Shakedown – SpiritsDustbowl Revival – Set Me FreeSay She She – PrismMark Evich – PrimePart II (31:00)Danielle Ponder – Some of Us Are BraveBobby Oroza – I Got LoveRobohands feat Aleh – WildflowerYoung Gun Silver Fox – Rolling BackLyves – ShameAdrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad feat Phil Ranelin - GenesisPart III (60:51)Titus Andronicus – I'm ScrewedPlacebo – HugzRed Hot Chili Peppers – EddieParamore – This is WhyCallous Daoboys – Star BabySanchez. – FeelingPart IV (98:56)Yard Act – Dead HorseWet Leg – UR MumBig Thief – Simulation SwarmPUP – RelentlessWhite Lung – Date NightFontaines DC – I Love You
As broadcast November 17, 2022 with plenty of Ruffin' about. Tonight we mark the passing of a man who was instrumental to the early Motown Sound and therefore the entirety of what was to come in funk and soul, Jimmy Ruffin. Unfortunately, the elder brother of David passed away on this date, so we wanted to show some love for a guy who never seemed to get his full due to start the show. Lots of the aforementioned "what was to come" for this week in the rest of hour one, with a feature of Lady Blackbird, Vendredi sur Mer, SAULT, Robert Glasper, and our dear friend Kamen Ross who finishes the hour super strong and live way up in the Rockies! Dan Lloyd once again ghosts into the studio while knocking stuff around for our AMPED feature, with a highlight on some deserving Grammy nods in the rock category in part 4, along with some amazing new stuff just out for the remainder, with our KROCKPOT feature giving a nod to one of Korea's hardest working bands Walking After U to close the radio process tonight.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Jimmy Ruffin – What Becomes of the Broken HeartedLee Fields – I Should Have Let You BeBobby Oroza with Cold Diamond & Mink – The Otherside (inst)Lady Blackbird – Feel It Comin' (single vers)Vendredi sur Mer – Tout m'ennuieChannel Tres – 6am Part II (30:03)SAULT – God's WillJuan Gabriel & George Benson – Luna Tres LunaThe Teskey Brothers – This Will Be Our YearLM.ORG feat Alice Russell – Playground GamesRobert Glasper feat Hindi Zahra – FeverKamen Ross – Yellow Rose (Live at Rocky Mountain National Park) Part III (59:45)Fake Names – Delete MyselfSmashing Pumpkins – Beyond the ValeShame – Fingers of SteelSharon van Etten – When I DieR. You don't have to be born in the US to sing soul, but you do have to be able to convey the right feeling. Helsinki-born Bobby Oroza has that in his soul. “Through These Tears” lights a slow-burning flame on the crossroads of lost love.
As broadcast June 16, 2022 with plenty of extra love for those not with us. Remembering my true ride-or-die homeboy who was with me for nearly half my life from the time I arrived in Korea in 2005, Dirty The Dog passed on one year ago today and we dedicate the opener to all those struggling with loss by playing something as manic and heedless as my beloved cocker I found at a bus stop in 2005. Lots of new funk & soul to get through in hour one with a new album out from Bobby Oroza, great new remixes by Franc Moody and Hot Chip's Joe Goddard along with an outstanding new single from Danger Mouse & Black Thought's upcoming LP as highlights. As broadcast June 9, 2022 with plenty of podcast pinballs provided no quarters necessary. We mark two years since Bonnie Pointer met her demise, leaving only the eldest of the original Pointer Sisters as the lone survivor. We had a smattering of new tunes to cover this week in our Sampled funk & soul first hour, but also had a lot of recent joints that we kind of slept on, with John Batiste, Danielle Ponder, The Frightnrs, and Lettuce being highlights of a strong first half. Dan Lloyd once again kicks in the door and makes us call him uncle in hour 2 for our AMPED rock feature, with a lotta good, a lotta bad, and a generally mixed bag heading to the end of the show. However, as usual, our guy on the drums had his fun too, with a hilarious mashup of the new Muse tune with Gary Glitter highlighting how derivative and ridiculous that latest single is from the former.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The Pointer Sisters – Pinball Number CountDanielle Ponder – The Only Way OutMickey De Grand IV – GeraldineJon Batiste – TELL THE TRUTHJungle – PROBLEMZLettuce – Vamanos Part II (31:33)Haley Johnsen – EmilyYola & The Highwomen feat Cheryl Crow – Hold OnEl Michels Affair feat Bobby Oroza – Stack The DeckThe Frightnrs – AlwaysMaverick Sabre – Good ManKatalyst feat Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad – JuneteenthBrian Jackson – Nancy Wilson (Shigeto remix) Part III (66:53)Panic! As broadcast January 28, 2022 with plenty of heartache to throw in for your podcast bust-up. Just a smattering of new cuts out the past week or so in the funk and soul corner of the music matrix, mostly dealing with breakups and relationships, so we decided to let it all out with a breakup- and makeup-focused first hour for this week's Sampled sampler. Very strong new tunes and some big announcements of forthcoming albums though, with Lee Fields and Mamas Gun both announcing upcoming LP's for 2022 with their latest singles. Dan Lloyd then joins us once again for our weekly AMPED feature, with lots of new music out this week in the rock realm. Mainly feeling vindicated that the Yard Act album was indeed as good as advertised, we also checked out the latest from Pinegrove, Franz Ferdinand, Guerilla Toss, and many other worthy artists during the hour, with a tribute to the dearly departed but always controversial and aloof in life and death Meatloaf to close.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Lyn Collins – Think (About It)Kelly Finnigan – Since I Don't Have You AnymoreTyrone Davis – Can I Change My MindBobby Oroza – Your Love Is Too ColdTeddy Grossman – Giving UpFerris & Sylvester – Golden Part II (30:39)Durand Jones & The Indications – Giving UpLee Fields – Ordinary LivesMamas Gun – Looking for MosesBen L'Oncle Soul – StayOV Wright – Let's Straighten It OutThe Funkees – Baby I Need YouKOKOROKO – Carry Me Home Part III (63:33)Eels – The MagicYard Act – Dead HorseGhost – Call Me Little SunshineGuerilla Toss – Cannibal CapitalFranz Ferdinand – CuriousFoo Fighters – Fraggle Rock Rock Part IV (94:47)Jethro Tull – The Zealot GeneStereophonics – ForeverHot Water Music – Collect Your Things and RunPinegrove – RespirateMeat Loaf – Paradise By the Dashboard Light

Tonight we open marking the first time the original members of The Meters got together for a show in 2000, which was the first time since 1977, and we also talked about the creation and germination of one of their most famous tunes in "Cissy Strut." After that, we put on some tropical vibes on a very dour, cold, & wet day here in Gwangju with some tropical vibes from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band along with an old school Rio favorite from 1975 in Helio Matheus. After that, it's all new tunes for the rest of the first hour with Silk Sonic, Joan As Police Woman, Bobby Oroza, Curtis Harding, and Adrian Quesada with Aaron Frazer being highlights along with Neal Francis & Curtis Harding being out with new LP's as of last Friday. As broadcast October 21, 2021 with plenty of super high for the podcast superflies. We mark today in 1972, when the definition of "cinematic soul" went to #1 on the Billboard albums chart, as Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" surely was, is, and shall be. We also rocked some early 70's from Willie Hutch, Isaac Hayes, and Syl Johnson for the rest of part 1. For part 2 we got to the new stuff just out, with Neal Francis, The Teskey Brothers, L'eclair, and Bobby Oroza all out with new joints. For our 2nd half, Dan Lloyd right as rain is back but this week with slim pickings in the rock world, we decided to look over some bands that have fallen off through the years, some of them without a decent track for over a decade...and we of course riffed on why that might be.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Curtis Mayfield – SuperflyWillie Hutch – Brothers Gonna Work It OutCharles Bradley & Menahan Street Band – Trouble In The LandSyl Johnson – Is It Because I'm BlackIsaac Hayes – Walk On By (ext vers) Part II (35:55)The Teskey Brothers feat Orchestra Victoria – So Caught Up (Live at Hamer Hall)Neal Francis – PrometheusMicah Edwards – Girl From The ValleyBobby Oroza feat Cold Diamond & Mink – So Caught UpEl Michels Affair – Messy GrassL'éclair – Cosmologies Pt. 1 Part III (65:48)Offspring – All I WantSmash Mouth – Diggin' Your SceneGreen Day – Armatage ShanksU2 – Where The Streets Have No NameSleater-Kinney – OhRamones – Cretin Hop Part IV (98:44)Foo Fighters – All My LifeMastodon – The Wolf Is LooseDandy Warhols – Every Day Should Be A HolidayBeck – Nicotine & GravyMumford & Sons – The Cave
As broadcast July 29, 2021 with bonus beats for you podcast boppers. We start tonight remembering Idris Muhammad, a stalwart of the jazz drums and a transformational figure in funk, disco, breaks, and by extension hip-hop & electronica. A proud son of Nawlins, Muhammad was the man behind too many samples to count off the top of even an expert's head. For the remainder of the first hour, we have lots of new cuts to check out with Kendra Morris, Arjuna Oakes, Common & many more to check out, with a couple more historical features of The Time's self-titled album, released this week 40 years ago, and The Roots "Do You Want More?!!!??!" which had been slated for a deluxe reissue last year that was delayed due to the pandemic. Cometh the hour, cometh the Dan after we hit the top of the clock again for our weekly AMPED rock feature, with an absolutely shocking Jonathan Davis cover of the Pet Shop Boys, Lucy Dacus speaking Simlish, and what has to be the tune of the week from The Linda Lindas getting their 2nd spin in 3 days' time.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Idris Muhammad – Crap AppleKendra Morris feat Eraserhood Sound – When We Would RideCommon feat PJ – ImagineJoan As Police Woman feat Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderThe Time – Get It Up Part II (30:03)Bobby Oroza – Breakthru (This Love demo)Arjuna Oakes & Serebii – Even When You're GoneAstrocolor feat Caley Thomas – ParadiseMonster Rally – Tangerine LoungeFlamingosis – AuroraThe Roots feat Cassandra Wilson – Swept AwayThe Root – Distortion To Static Part III (57:30)Turnstile – HolidaySlipknot – DualityCoheed and Cambria – ShouldersPet Shop Boys (with a brief snippet of Jonathan Davis) – It's a SinQuicksand - BrushedDry Cleaning – Bug Eggs Part IV (89:17)The Linda Lindas – Oh!Volbeat – Don't Tread on MeLucy Dacus – Hot and Heavy (Simlish)The Joy Formidable – ChimesLindsey Buckingham – On the Wrong Side

As broadcast April 15, 2021. On this date in 1989, Tone Loc's debut record went to #1 on the Billboard Charts on the back of two big hit singles in "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina." Admittedly, pretty wack tunes that have not aged well to say the very least on the subject. However, we rocked the title track to the album which is more true to the artist himself anyway. For the rest of our Sampled funk & soul first half, we had newly remastered tunes from Fela Kuti and an old J-Dilla remix along with new tunes from El Michels Affair, Black Market Brass, Jordan Rakei & many others. As broadcast April 1, 2021 with bonus footage for the podcast version. Today we start with tragedy & celebration. As to the former, this is the 37th anniversary of Marvin Gaye's passing, killed by his own namesake in a fit of tragic rage. For the celebration, it's the 12th anniversary of GFN 98.7 FM's founding here in Gwangju, so we marked it in our own inimitable manner with new tunes to boot from the likes of Bobby Oroza, Holy Hive, Flevans, and El Michels. Dan Lloyd joined us for our weekly AMPED feature, going over some of the best from the past week, including Death from Above 1979 along with new tunes from Direct Hit, The Bruce Lee Band, Royal Blood and Gojira to finish the show for tonight.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Marvin Gaye – You're The Man Pt 1 & 2Neal Francis – She's A WinnerUniversal Togetherness Band – My SentimentBlack Ivory – MainlineFlevans – I Wanted You To Stay Part II (34:06)Bobby Oroza – Loving BodyHoly Hive – I Don't Envy YesterdaysEl Michels Affair – Lesson LearnedThe Notations – What More Can I SayKarate Boogaloo – Diamonds Are ForeverFela Kuti & Africa 70 feat Ginger Baker – Black Man's Cry Part III (65:56)Direct Hit! – Hollow ComfortGarbage – The Men Who Rule the WorldThe Bronx – White ShadowDeath from Above 1979 – NYC Power Elite Pt. 1Royal Blood – LimboPart IV (94:38)Gojira – AmazoniaBeartooth – DevastationTomahawk – Predators and ScavengersThe Bruce Lee Band – Division in the HeartlandDry Cleaning – Scratchcard Lanyard

This episode comes to you by way of Jukka Sarapää founder & Co. owner of Timmion Records Ltd. When Jukka is not touring the world playing drums with Bobby Oroza and Cold Diamond & Mink, he can be found recording sweet soul, raw funk or cutting master lacquers for the next 12" or 7" of your favorite jazz/pop/house/metal etc. artist at Timmion Records Studios inside the subterranean caves of Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki, Finland. When playing records, his selections tend to take the obscure route, leaning on moody mid-tempo soul and ballads. Nevertheless, he's sure to also have your favorite organist and Stevie Wonder records back home neatly filed up.
