American politician, Governor of New York, United States (1932–2015)
POPULARITY
When you think about great political comebacks, maybe you think of Donald Trump, or Richard Nixon, or “comeback kid” Bill Clinton. You might soon add Andrew Cuomo to that list. In 2020, Cuomo was at the top of the world. He had been governor of New York for a decade. He had an illustrious career in New York politics—which is sort of the Cuomo family business. He learned how the state worked from his father, three-term Democratic governor Mario Cuomo. When COVID hit, Governor Cuomo's star just kept rising. Millions of Americans—even outside of New York—tuned into his COVID briefings, and his CNN segments with his brother, Chris Cuomo. He was “America's Governor.” On the cover of Rolling Stone. Women and men were even self-identifying as “Cuomosexual.” But then it all came crashing down. With two scandals—one personal and one political. As Covid was peaking in New York City, Andrew Cuomo was hit with a wave of allegations. In the end, state Attorney General Letitia James brought forward a report that alleged Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women. (Cuomo denies wrongdoing.) The other scandal, as many will recall, had to do with Covid—specifically, Cuomo's administration was accused of mishandling the readmission of elders who'd had Covid into nursing homes, and many alleged that he misrepresented the nursing home death count. The governor disputes that, as you'll hear today. By August 2021, Cuomo announced his resignation. His political career appeared to be over. For a time, he totally disappeared from public life. He went from having an audience of 59 million tuning into his Covid briefings to zero. But today, in May of 2025, the picture is dramatically different. Andrew Cuomo is now the front-runner to be the next mayor of New York City. Among Democrats—the party that tore him down—he has a commanding lead, polling at around 37 percent ahead of next month's primary. His closest competitor, 33-year-old socialist state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, is hovering around 18 percent, according to a Marist Marist poll from just last week. So, what is it about Andrew Cuomo? Will New York choose Andrew Cuomo again? And if so, why? What does that say about the state of the city and our political choices? And why does he want the job of mayor at all? Today on Honestly, Bari asks former governor Andrew Cuomo about all of it—Covid and the harassment allegations, but also his vision for New York City, addressing public safety and affordability, his thoughts on school choice, Eric Adams's tenure, the state of the Democratic Party, Donald Trump, illegal immigrants in New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and his plan for getting NYC back on track. Send us a textIn this episode we listen in on one of the great public speakers of the Democratic Party, New York Governor Mario Cuomo. He will deliver the nominating speech for Governor Bill Clinton and he will electrify the crowd as only he can do. In fact, what stands out is that most of the delegates in the hall, who are way more liberal than your average Democrat, really would have preferred Cuomo as the nominee. Cuomo had toyed with the idea of running for President back in 1991 but at that time George H. W. Bush was at 91% favorables in the polls and Cuomo decided to not make the race. That left the field wide open for Bill Clinton. So, on this third night of the 1992 Democratic Convention it would be Mario Cuomo speaking in nomination of Bill Clinton. Clinton having gambled and won by challenging a President who seemed so strong just 12 months before that he had scared out the heavyweights that could have challenged him. There is a political lesson in that scenario because it cannot be lost on you that Clinton would go on to win and Mario Cuomo would never again have the opportunity to run for President in his own right. Such, is the wheel of fate in politics. Then a surprise will occur that will change the race and turn it completely upside down, just after Bill Clinton broke with tradition and came down to the hall himself to thank the delegates in person. Williams explains how this type of assistance could increase demand but won't solve supply issues, potentially driving prices even higher. The Limits of Deregulation in Real EstateWilliams shares his view on Trump's deregulation promises, explaining why federal deregulation might not make a noticeable difference in housing supply, as zoning regulations are largely determined at the state and local levels.Systemic Challenges to Housing Policy ImplementationBoth Williams and Mills highlight the logistical and structural hurdles in implementing long-term housing policies, noting how temporary political goals often overshadow the sustained efforts needed for real change. Why Your Vote Matters in Housing PolicyWith a deep dive into how policies affect everyday housing, Williams stresses that Realtor and consumer participation in elections is essential for driving policies that prioritize real estate issues. Karen DeWitt has been covering the statehouse since 1986. She joined the press corps at a time when very few women were in the industry, and quickly became a trusted voice on New York public radio, covering multiple governors, budgets, scandals, a pandemic and more. Recently, she announced that she'd be retiring and stepping down from her role as Capitol Bureau chief for the New York Public News Network. Dewitt joined NY1's Errol Louis to discuss her long and storied career in journalism. They also touched on the many campaigns she has covered, if her retirement is indeed final, how she longed to see one presidential campaign without having to report on it and how Mario Cuomo influenced her to quit while she's ahead. They called him the "Hamlet on the Hudson." What series on people not running for President in American history would be complete without the former governor of New York Mario Cuomo. He was famous for coming ever-so-close to running for President. And then, not running. In one case, he left a plane on a tarmac for reporters to watch for hours. Was it politics? Was it bad timing? Was it preference for state government? What about those mob ties [real or imagined] that were talked about? And was it, just maybe, a kind a weird psychological thing? In late 1991, some Democrats were hopeful that Mario Cuomo would finally agree to run for president. When he didn't, President-elect Bill Clinton then wanted to appoint him to the Supreme Court. He cast aside these opportunities, and instead lost a bid for a fourth term as governor. Why didn't Cuomo run for president? Why didn't he accept Clinton's appointment? And how did he lose to a relatively unknown freshman state senator named George Pataki? Episode 3 of “Mario Cuomo: The Last Liberal” attempts to answer the questions that have captured the minds of many New Yorkers for decades, while examining Cuomo's legacy and looking at his life after politics.
This week on The Enemies List, Rick is joined by New York City journalist, TV anchor, and NY Mag columnist Errol Louis. Together, they discuss the legacy of Mario Cuomo, touching upon his influence on the Democratic Party and New York politics, as well as his unique rhetoric and decision not to run for president. They also discuss current political dynamics in New York, the evolution of the Republican Party, and the career and potential comeback of Andrew Cuomo. Forty years ago, Mario Cuomo began his three-term tenure as governor. He inherited a state that was in the midst of a fiscal crisis and a crime problem. With the help of his top aide, Michael Del Giudice, Cuomo began to tackle the budget and try to get the state in order. To complicate matters, in 1984, Cuomo gave the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention that thrust into the national spotlight and led to pressure from Democrats for him to pursue the presidential nomination in future elections. From the perspective of his key advisers and the reporters that covered him, we'll hear how Cuomo managed to juggle governing and external pressures while keeping his ideals intact, and we'll learn how the decisions he struggled to make have had a lasting effect on both the state and the country.
As part of his new 3-part podcast, Errol Louis, political anchor of Spectrum NY1 News, host of Inside City Hall, New York Magazine columnist and host of the podcast You Decide, looks back at the legacy of the late former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, and how his decisions have reverberated in politics in New York and the country.
2023 marks 40 years since Mario Cuomo was sworn in as governor of New York for the first time. Cuomo was one of the most unlikely politicians the state had seen in a long time. The child of illiterate working-class immigrants who owned a grocery store in South Jamaica, Cuomo was a public-school genius who found himself graduating at the top of his class at St. John's Law School. After taking a few pro-bono cases representing homeowners in Queens, Cuomo found himself encouraged to enter politics by legendary journalists Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill, as well as NYC Mayor John Lindsay. What followed was a wild rise up the ranks, one that included a highly publicized run for mayor, as well as turns as lieutenant governor and New York secretary of state before finally being elected governor. From the perspective of his advisers and the reporters that covered him – some of them speaking about their experiences with Cuomo for the first time – we'll find out how Cuomo managed to become a major political figure in the Democratic Party despite having a background that differed from most elected officials. See more on our Mario Cuomo series at ny1.com/mariocuomo.
With Ronald Reagan and the GOP dominating America's political landscape in the 1980s, Democrats were largely dispirited and looking for someone to push back against a new wave of conservatism. Improbably, Mario Cuomo, the son of a grocer from Queens, became one of their heroes. Serving as governor of New York for 12 years, Cuomo was one of the chief standard-bearers of liberalism at a time when the political pendulum was swinging to the right. Even as many New Yorkers were increasingly worried about crime, Cuomo strongly resisted any calls for the death penalty, saying it made no sense morally or pragmatically. Filled with passion, Cuomo's address on abortion rights and his keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1984 are still studied today by students of the political craft and by those trying to explain the DNA of the Democratic Party. Cuomo was well-positioned to take his positions and ambitions nationally and launch a presidential campaign in 1992. Why Cuomo never pulled the trigger is one of the great mysteries of New York politics. Told from the perspective of his key advisors and the reporters that covered him, this special three-part podcast with NY1's Errol Louis traces the rise of Mario Cuomo, measures his impact on New York and America, and tries to solve the riddle of why Cuomo didn't run for president.

Faith said people with gestational genitalia (aka AFAB people or people who were assigned female at birth) "retain neoteny". Neoteny refers to child-like facial characteristics. These “neotenous” characteristics include a large forehead with lower set eyes, nose and mouth; a smaller, shorter, more recessive chin; fuller lips; larger eyes; a smaller nose; higher, thinner eyebrows; and a rounder, less angular face. This can be (but is not always) associated with attractiveness, to some people. Banished Children of Eve won an American Book Award.Looking for Jimmy: In Search of Irish America, a collection of non-fiction pieces, was published in 2007. We've made it to 1994. In September, House Republicans gather on the steps of the Capitol and sign the Contract with America. It's a carefully-worded list of bills they promise to bring to a vote as soon as they win the majority. Election night arrives, and the Republican sweep is decisive. Democrats are completely thrown by the size of the loss — and start searching for answers. And in January 1995, Newt Gingrich's biggest moment finally arrives: The Democrats hand over the gavel, and he becomes Speaker of the House.

Mario Cuomo, a potentially lengthy impeachment trial in the New York Assembly that was likely to have ousted him from power.
