Do you struggle to find the right mix of microbes to add to your soil? Instead of relying on traditional methods of adding a select few microbial strains to the soil, experts advocate for activating the natural balance of hundreds of existing microbes. This approach yields benefits in nutrient availability, crop health, and environmental sustainability. “Some microbes specialize in nitrogen fixation, others in phosphorus solubilization, while collectively contributing to making essential micronutrients readily available to plants,” explains Nick Becker, Director of Field Sales for Sound Agriculture. “This multifaceted approach fosters a balanced ecosystem within the soil, optimizing nutrient uptake by crops.” He added that while initially perceived as a cost-effective solution, an over-reliance on synthetic nitrogen disrupts the soil's equilibrium, leading to the tie-up of crucial nutrients. This not only limits the effectiveness of expensive inputs but also starts soil degradation over time. By activating native microbes, farmers can reduce waste, enhance their return on investment, and uphold soil integrity. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Creativity is a subject that rightfully gets a ton of attention in the nature and landscape photography community. Making seemingly "creative" photographs is a high bar that we set for ourselves as photographers and artists; however, it can be a nebulous descriptor that is difficult to define. As such, it is often discussed without giving it proper thought or consideration as to what it actually means to "be creative," or to create something that demonstrates "creativity." This week on episode 297 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast, I was joined by a landscape photographer living in St. Louis, Missouri, Nick Becker. Nick is someone who continually writes thoughtful articles that I have greatly enjoyed over the years and his photography is quite contemplative and enjoyable to look at, so I thought he would make for an excellent guest on the podcast. Nick and I talk quite extensively about creativity and neuroscience that supports various theories on creativity, so sick back and enjoy our conversation. On this week's episode, we discuss: Creativity! Why Nick makes photographs, How becoming a new dad has influenced Nick's thought processes as a photographer, How Nick's background as a computer scientist has impacted his photography and vice versa, Nick's article, "What Neuroscience Tells Us About Creativity and How to Use It To Our Advantage," The Two models of creativity, How to make creative nature and landscape photographs, Nick's article, "The Experience is Everything," Nick's software called, ColorTools - and his tutorial for using it, Roger Beaty's article that discusses idea generation/evaluation model of creativity, And a lot more! Nature and Landscape Photography can be a journey filled with introspection and is often positively augmented and influenced by various experiences we have in life. Discussing these experiences with other photographers brings me a lot of happiness, so I was excited to speak to this week's guest on my podcast about his experiences with psychedelics, reading books, and going on long personal journeys and how those experiences have influenced his work. This week on the podcast I was joined by nature and landscape photographer who has chosen to specialize in abstract imagery, Alberto Rodriguez-Garcia. On this week's episode, we discuss: How reading Jack Kerouac influenced Alberto's desire to get into nature more, Alberto and my experiences with psychedelics and how that has influenced his photography, Alberto's passion for small scenes and abstract images and how that passion was developed, The importance of critique in Alberto's growth, Alberto's cross-country journey as a photographer, And a lot more! Following Kegstar's acquisition by Brambles in 2015, loyalties started to shift with having to adapt to an ever changing corporate structure and culture, and so Nick followed Adam along with other former Kegstar employees Patrick Hanrahan & Marc Eggins to start KONVOY Kegs the new player in the Australian market for Keg Fleet Management. In our chat we discuss the inner workings of how keg rental & leasing works, plus advice around what is the sweet spot for when breweries should start considering this as an option. 57 kg – 61 kgOn this episode Ben Askren and Dernlan breakdown the mini-tournament of the 2019 World Team Trials. They start out at the 57 kg weight class where Thomas Gilman beat Darian Cruz to head to the best of three finals. They also discuss the 61 kg weight class which is not an Olympic weight class and where some of those guys will go whether that’s up in weight to 65 or down to 57. Nico Megaludis who lost to Tyler Graff in the mini-tournament finals is an example of a guy who announced he will be going down to 57 kg. Moving down in weight is not a small task by any means and takes a lot of time upwards of a year.65 kg (10:17)The first match they break down is Jason Ness who got tech falled by Dom Demas. That is not something we’ve come to expect to happen to Ness although Demas has proven himself a force to be reckoned with. Demas went on to battle Jaydin Eierman in the consolations losing in a huge scoring match 20-15. Overall there are a lot of extremely talented young wrestlers at this weight class.70 kg (17:08)Askren didn’t expect to Anthony Ashnault to make the finals here but he is another really young wrestler immediately making an impact on the national scene. Ashnault will most likely go down to 65 kg next year. Askren and Dernlan disagree on if James Green will go up or down in weight.74 kg (22:00)Askren was blown away when Logan Massa beat Thomas Gant in the semi-finals of the mini-tournament 5-4. Dernlan talks about the difference in responsibility when you’re competing for a team vs when you’re competing representing yourself in freestyle. Jason Nolf looked great throughout the tournament. Askren likes that Nolf made the move to 74 kg now and didn’t wait.79 kg (25:20)Askren trains closely with Nick Becker who recently signed with the Badger RTC and took third place dropping to Mark Hall. In the finals, Mark Hall lost to Zahid Valencia 5-0. Even with such a close score Askren and Dernlan agree Valencia’s win was pure dominance. After this match, no one would have expected the outcome of the best of three finals against Alex Dieringer. These three guys are all wrestler who cannot get down to 74 kg which makes 86 kg a brutal weight class to be in as the 2020 Olympics approach.86 kg (35:35)Nick Heflin looked good throughout the mini-tournament but couldn’t get it done in the finals. Askren and Dernlan hope David Taylor is ready to compete at Final X.92 kg (36:37)Michael Macchiavello beat Hayden Zillmer in the finals. Askren and Dernlan agree Macchiavello has a good opportunity to go down in weight and compete.97 kg (38:40)Ty Walz turned it around from the U.S. Open and did well throughout the mini-tournament to make the finals.125 kg (39:41)Heavyweight was an exciting weight class during the World Team Trials. Gable Steveson being the shining star throughout. Given Steveson’s age and skill Dernlan and Askren are fully on board the Steveson train and are excited for Final X.

Yianni Is Living in the MatrixOn this special live broadcast Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan breakdown all the wrestling from the U.S. Open leading up to the finals and make their predictions for the finals. The first topic they jump into is someone everyone is talking about, Yianni Diakomihalis. Diakomihalis has had an amazing tournament thus far highlighted by his tech fall over Jordan Oliver. It’s exciting to see considering Diakomihalis hasn’t had many opportunities to show what he can do in freestyle. Askren and Dernlan break down his mat and body awareness. The 65 kg final between Diakomihalis and Zain Retherford will be one of the most exciting matchups of the entire tournament.65 kg (15:18)After talking about Diakomilhalis vs Retherford, Askren and Dernlan discuss other key matches that went down in the 65 kg bracket. One great match was Joey McKenna vs Dean Heil. Heil came up big with two, four point moves in the second period getting the win 12-9. Heil then only had 15 minutes until his next round match against Jordan Eierman. Askren says in order to save time and allow more time between matches they should consider getting rid of challenge blocks before the quarterfinals.57 kg (21:07)The first match they break down is Nathan Tomasello vs Thomas Gilman that ended with Tomasello cautioning out in the second period. Askren was surprised at how dominant Gilman looked after Tomasello tech falled his way to the semifinal match. Tomasello and Gilman always had very competitive matches in college. They go on to talk about Daton Fix. They point out how many tournaments Fix shows up to which is a lot more than most wrestlers.61 kg (25:35)Askren and Dernlan give credit to Joey Palmer making it all the way to the semifinals as a fairly unknown wrestler. He got past Tyler Graff in the quarterfinals which is a very tough task. Another wrestler Askren highlights in this bracket is Beau Bartlett. Bartlett is a high school junior and ended up finishing 8th place beating some notable collegiate wrestlers.70 kg (29:02)Ryan Deakin has been on a storm through this star-studded bracket. Deakin was Dernlan’s pick as a guy that could be a major disrupter at NCAAs but he faded off during the NCAA Championships. He’s been showing the world what he can do in Freestyle and will face James Green who beat Jason Nolf in their semifinal matchup.74 kg (32:54)Isaiah Martinez has been hammering everyone on his way to the finals. He faces Thomas Gantt in the finals. Askren says the most interesting thing about this weight class is to see what the wrestlers at non-Olympic weight levels decide to do.79 kg (35:02)Askren coached Nick Becker who’s wrestling out of Askren Wrestling Academy. Becker dropped to Chance Marsteller and now he will face Matthew Finesilver in the third-place match. Marsteller faces Alex Dieringer in the finals. Askren predicts Dieringer going down to 74 kg and Marsteller going up to 86 for the Olympics.86 kg (35:43)Pat Downey beats Myles Martin in the semis 9-7. It was all Martin in the first period up 7-0 but wasn’t able to hold off Downey in the second. Downey faces Nick Heflin in the finals.92 kg (38:03)Hayden Zillmer has been really impressive all tournament but he has a tough task in the finals against Bo Nickal. Askren calls for fireworks in the finals and wants to see how Nickal wrestlers a bigger wrestler in Zillmer.97 kg (38:43)One of Dernlan’s top wrestlers, Ben Honis has made it to the finals and will face Kyven Gadson. Honis beat Ty Walz in the semifinals. Walz is a guy many thought could give Snyder a run which shows how good Honis is.125 kg (40:03)Adam Coon made his way to the finals as expected and he’ll face Anthony Nelson.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, Saturday night’s scores and more here on Short Time Shots, I’m your host Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant and baby, it’s cold outside. Anyone ever actually listen to the lyrics of that song? This day and age, conduct like that would get you fired and tarred and feathered on social media. What the heck is that guy’s problem? Anyway … cliché warnings are walking around this winter wonderland tonight. It was hardly a silent night in college wrestling as one of the nation’s best tournaments, the Midwest Classic, completed its first day of action. I’ve always said there’s more to college wrestling than just the Division I teams and the Midwest Classic is a stellar event. Some might put it as say the Midlands or Southern Scuffle of Division II, despite there’s more than just Division II teams competing. Anyway, we’ll ring-a-ling, hear them ring right into the semifinals as UW-Parkside leads the field after the first day of competition with 68 points, followed by Findlay with 59.5, McKendree with 57.5 and Ashland with 57. Central Oklahoma isn’t far behind with 54. What’s astounding about this is there are 22 different schools represented in the semifinals out of the 30 teams in the field. Parkside and Findlay each have five, while Ashland has four. Central Oklahoma and Maryville have three each. You might remember Maleek Williams of Upper Iowa. Two years ago, he had a stroke ... and then later qualified for the NCAA Division II championships. Yes, the same season. Crazy. Anyway, he's into the semifinals for Upper Iowa where he'll face Sebastian Vidika of Ashland. Upsets disrupted things down low as ninth-ranked Carlos Jacquez will face freshman Joe Arroyo of Parkside in the bottom bracket semi. At 133, top-ranked Dustin Kirk of King moved into the semis where he'll face Darius Bunch of West Liberty. Ninth-ranked Arik Furseth of Parkside will face Mary's Tate Barnhardt in the semis. Barnhardt knocked off seventh-ranked Naquan Hardy of McKendree 8-7 in the quarterfinals. A pair of ranked wrestlers meet in the top bracket at 141. Darren Wynn of McKendree, ranked No. 1 in Division II will face Maryville's Will Roark, whom some of you may remember from Fargo. Roark is ranked No. 9 in Division II. Down low, Robert Mason of Ashland faces third-ranked Brandon Ball of Fort Hays State in the semifinals. Parkside's Frank Yattoni knocked off second-ranked and top-seed Rudy Guillen of Mary in the quarterfinals 2-0 at 149 pounds Down low, Will Steltzen picked off fifth-ranked Logan Grass of Mercyhurst in the quarters. Steltzen will face second-seeded but top-ranked James Krischke of Maryville in the semifinals. Wild weight class there. Shakeups were also around at 157 where Ryne Cokely, yes, THAT Ryne Cokely of Fort Hays State pinned third-ranked Ryan Strope of McKendree in the second round, but then fell to Parkside's 12th-ranked Pernevlon Sheppard in the quarterfinals. Sheppard will face unraked Austin Palmer of Newberry. Palmer beat fifth-ranked Heath Lange of Indianapolis 10-6 in the quarters. Up top, seventh-ranked Byran Dutton of Central Oklahoma will face NAIA runner-up Cam Tessari of Lindsey Wilson -- yes, THAT Cam Tessari. Top semifinal will come in the bottom bracket at 165 as fourth-ranked Alonzo Turner of Findlay will face off with Lake Erie's Nick Vandermeer. Third-ranked Bret Romanzak of Ashland is up top facing off with Seton Hill's Zach Voytek. Parkside's Nick Becker -- yes, another Becker still at Parkside -- is up top facing Nathan Vandermeer of Findlay, while down low, unheralded Miaden Vasilev of Maryville rolled into the semifinals beating two ranked foes, including sixth-ranked Brandon Supernaw of Western State Colorado. Yes, the full name of the school is now Western State Colorado University, not Western State College. Vasilev will try to take out his third straight ranked opponent -- fourth-ranked Nick Foster of McKendree in the semis at 174. Lake Erie's Tyler Hughes and Findlay's Brad Metz will meet in the bottom bracket at 184 pounds. Both are ranked in the top eight in the country. At 197 pounds, Limestone's fourth-ranked Matt Rudy will face seventh-ranked Wes Phipps of Mercyhurst in the top bracket semifinal, while 11th-ranked Konnor Schmidt of Western State Colorado will matchup with unseeded Armani Robinson of Findlay. Second ranked Logan Hopp was injured in his second round bout and was forced to default out of the tournament. That left ninth-ranked Mimmo Lyttle of Findlay to face off with Dalton Weidl of Newman in the top bracket semifinal. Indianapolis, the hosts of the event, gets its lone semifinalist with eight-ranked Dylan Falkenberg. He'll face fourth-ranked Caleb Cotter in the semifinals. This one's streamed live on Trackwrestling and it's one helluva tournament. The dual meet side of things had a very shiny nose, too. Ok, that … was not amusing. Lock Haven improved to 4-0 after picking up three wins in the Bald Eagle Duals in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The 22nd-ranked Bald Eagles cruised past Division II Wheeling Jesuit 32-11 and Division III Messiah 34-6 before dispatching with EWL rival Bloomsburg 37-2 in the nightcap. Ronnie Perry knows when you’ve been sleeping, he scored three technical falls while Chance Marsteller, who knows when you’re awake, picked up a fall and two techs. Central Michigan opened up its MAC schedule with a ho-hum 34-6 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday night. The 23rd-ranked Chippewas earned five bonus victories en route to the win. Heavyweight Matt Stencel scored a fall in 36 seconds for CMU. Cold never bothered him anyway. A pair of old EWL wrestling foes tangled on Saturday with Clarion upending Pittsburgh 24-20. Trailing 14-9 with four matches left, Clarion went big with back-to-back falls by Dominic Rigous and Greg Bulsak put Clarion in position to win. Dustin Conti rocked the corncob pipe and button nose on the way to a tiebreaker victory over transfer Kellan Stout was the clincher. No. 1 Johnson & Wales went over the river and through the woods to New York and smacked around a pair of junior colleges with both the A and B teams. The Wildcats beat Nassau 36-9 and Camden County 46-6. Gator Boots Duals Nashville Sleigh bells ring, are you listening Loras College? The fourth-ranked Duhawks improved to 7-0 on the season with three wins at the Gator Boots Duals in Nashville, take me to another place, Tennessee. Wait a minute, Tennessee isn’t a Christmas song. Anyway, Coach T.J. Miller’s team outlasted eight-ranked Baldwin Wallace 18-13 and also picked up another top-ten win, beating No. 9 Ferrum 34-7. Loras’ Jimmy Davis rocked around the Christmas tree, topping nationally ranked Collin Saunders at 149 pounds. In other action down there, Luther, which serves as the host of the event, went 4-0 beating Lakeland, Huntingdon, UW-Oshkosh and the University of the Ozarks. Wheaton swept the Jim Fox Duals in Dubuque beating host Dubuque, Concordia -- of Wisconsin -- and Nebraska Wesleyan. I came across a roadkill dear … and that’s all I’ve got for Saturday, December 16.   The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly supported by Compound Clothing.
