Today's guest is comedian, podcaster, and writer Youngmi Mayer.Youngmi is one of the very first people we profiled on MOTHER 10 years ago, back when she—and her ex-husband Danny Bowien—were food world darlings thanks to their restaurant, Mission Chinese Food.It wasn't until several years after becoming a mother that Youngmi finally vocalized the goal she'd had since she was a kid—and was too embarrassed to say out loud—she wanted to be a stand-up comedian. She chronicles this experience—as well as the rise and fall of Mission Chinese—in her brand-new memoir, I'm Laughing Because I'm Crying. The bulk of the book covers her personal history of being raised in Korea by a Korean mother and American father, as well as the powerful stories of the many ancestors that came before her. As the title suggests, the book is at times funny and deeply emotional, as it touches on issues of colonialism, abuse, love, death, motherhood, and generational trauma. In today's conversation, we talk to Youngmi about what she's happily inherited from her own parents, her big breaks in comedy, raising a tween son in a world steeped in misogyny, and her ultimate goal of being relatable. Youngmi—comedian and author of the new memoir I'm Laughing Because I'm Crying—hit the stu for a little therapy session on wearing one dress while on tour and only owning three outfits and one pair of shoes, vaping on the airplane, her new memoir and the idiom that inspired both the title and one of her first jokes, finding comedy amongst the trauma and tragedy, immigrant inferiority complexes, Korean stereotypes for white people, parenting do's and don'ts, the easiest book sale of all time, being early on the Luigi Mangioni thirst, when Asian politeness meets white supremacy and when they've had enough, answering the age-old what are you vs. how are you questions, K-pop as a negative export, Korean skincare 101, dating in NYC and a very thorough rundown of all the worst types of guys, haters needing to hate better, brokenness as a cruising altitude and much more on Youngmi Mayer's interview with The Only Podcast That Matters™.
Youngmi Mayer says she hates doing research but, in our conversation and in her new memoir I'm Laughing Because I'm Crying, she does a lot of digging into the events of her life and what they all meant. Youngmi grew up in Saipan and Korea, the daughter of a Korean mother and a White American father, and had to deal with discrimination, harassment, and abuse. Later on, she moved to America with $700 in her pocket and no real plan in order to escape an abusive relationship and had to find a path that included a place of prominence in the restaurant scene, a life of comedy, and a severe depression disorder.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Life Under the Apple Tree (Song of Solomon 2:3-14) Introduction I of course don't know when you last read it, heard a talk about it or if you have ever read it or heard a talk about it! So, if you are in that category, it's a new thing for you! In my preparation, as I talked to other Christians about this book, I have found that some people are aghast at some of the very frank and provocative language used! But this should not stop us from reading it, studying it and learning from it. It is, after all, part of the Bible and therefore part of God's Written Word. Jesus Himself and the Disciples would have read this book at Passover time. It is a book that tells of the love of a woman (the Beloved) for a man, the man probably being Solomon. Different translations have different places where the beloved, the lover and others are actually speaking. But for ease of use tonight, we will use the guidelines of the church bibles, the New International Version. The Jews called it the Greatest Song of All Songs. Martin Luther called it the noblest of all songs! It is poetry that is full of love, romance and some say eroticism. Greater than Shakespeare's sonnets if you can believe that! Tonight, we are delving only into Chapter 2. Historically this book has been interpreted in 3 ways Firstly as a treatise on the joys of biblical sexual love; Secondly as an allegory for God's love for His people Israel; These two interpretations have great merit! However, some of you may be sad to know and others very happy to know, that I am going to concentrate principally on a third way that encompasses those two and that is seeing it as a picture of the immense love that exists between Jesus Christ for His church and its people, where the bridegroom is Jesus and His bride is the church. Paul highlights this relationship in his letter to the Ephesians. Before I forget, I should say that I am also aware of another difficulty, and that is that British men and Australian men have one thing in common - we are not very good at saying or doing things to do with love! We find it embarrassing and cumbersome. I don't know about South Africans or other nationalities though! So, hopefully with the help of the Holy Spirit, this may also make us become better men as well as feeding our minds and hearts about the love that exists between Jesus and the church! The Beloved's Portrait of the Lover (Song of Solomon 2:3-6) This is the beloved's portrait of her lover, the bridegroom. He is an apple tree! Wives, have you ever called your husband an apple tree! And of course He is an apple tree, because this lover, this bridegroom provides her with shelter, protection and food. And she enjoys it. Delighting in being strengthened, refreshed and being in love. As he embraces her, she feels his compassion, his warmth, his love for her and his strength. How does that talk of Jesus and his love for the church, His people, His bride? Jesus is the Bread of life Three times in John 6, Jesus refers to Himself as the living bread. By this He meant that He was the only one who could satiate the appetite and yearning of every person's spirit. For those He was speaking to, bread was a basic staple food for living, just as it is for millions of people today. Jesus indicates when saying He is the bread of life, that He will supply all needs! Just as He said to the woman at the well in John 4v4, that whoever drinks His living water shall never again go spiritually thirsty. When Jesus referred to the manna in the desert (John 6v49) he talked of it being merely temporary, despite being a gift from God. He, however, as the true bread of life gives permanent satisfaction and life everlasting to all those who believe and follow Him (John 6v51)! But this bread He offers, has to be eaten; it has to be taken up by the person wanting spiritual life! If you are seeking spiritual nourishment, then ask! Have you eaten of this bread? Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Jesus is the great protector, the great Shepherd. It is through Jesus and Jesus Christ alone, that salvation and spiritual protection and is found and through Him alone as the door or the gate, that people are led safely and soundly into spiritual freedom, spiritual light and spiritual sustenance. Unlike others who come only to steal, kill and destroy, Jesus offers spiritual safety & nourishment. Jesus protects those whom He loves and who loves Him! Jesus does not just offer a way out, but also a way in! The security offered by Jesus is because He is always in close proximity to those who follow Him. Jesus calls all those who follow Him by name (John 10v3) and they know each other. Jesus is the great shepherd only through the sacrifice he must make for His sheep. Here Jesus is looking ahead to the sacrifice He makes on the Cross. The cross is referred to in the New Testament as the tree on which Jesus hung. His protective and nourishing love for all of humanity compels Him to make the ultimate sacrifice of His death on the tree. Just as all shepherds will endanger themselves for the protection and safety of their sheep, so too did Jesus endure the pain and suffering of the Cross, so that people can be led into the eternal safety of God's kingdom. It is in this role of shepherd, that Jesus exhibits true leadership, which is self-less and sacrificial. I saw this week an example of a shepherd protecting his flock. It was up near Crowe and I was driving back from Burley, and there were a flock of sheep on one side of the road and the shepherd on the other. He was on a bicycle and the sheep were looking at him for directions! His sheep knew him and were looking to him and he was protecting them from being run over by a maniac in a green Fiesta! Are you looking to the great shepherd, Jesus Christ for safety, protection and guidance? These are just two examples of Jesus himself saying He protects, nourishes, gives shelter and loves. Many more examples can be found in the Gospels. Just as there is only one lover for this woman, there is only one Saviour for the world. Jesus does not say I am a true vine; a way, a truth and a life. He does not say I am a door to life, just as He does not say I am a shepherd, a door, a light or a bread of life. No - Jesus is the only way, the only truth and the only life. Jesus is the one great shepherd and the only door to life. Jesus is the only light of the world and the only true bread of life. Jesus is the apple tree, and calls everyone to partake of the nourishment and shelter only He can provide. The Beloved Encourages Others about the Lover (Song of Solomon 2:7-9) Read verses 7-9 Here now, the beloved addresses her friends and other people, not be impatient! These women were being persuaded by the beloved not to engage in sexual love until their marriage! Who were they? We don't know! But we do know from the rest of Scripture that sexual love is only for those in a committed monogamous marriage between a man and a woman. Sexual union, between a man and a woman in a committed married relationship, is a picture of the union of God and His people - that's why adultery and sexual immorality is also idolatry. Then the Beloved calls out "Listen! Look" Here he comes! She is expecting him to arrive at any time! The Beloved is waiting for her lover! She has a glimpse of Him but is waiting for His bodily presence with her. Is this not a picture of us, as the church awaiting Jesus Christ to come again? Before Jesus ascended into the clouds, He said He would be coming again! Not as a little baby next time, but coming from the clouds in great glory, honour, jubilation and exaltation! Nobody knows when that will be! There are hints in the Bible, but they are only hints! We are to wait expectantly and to live lives that are worthy of Him now, as we partake of righteousness and wait for Jesus to come again. When ever Youngmi and I go together to London, we meet up with old friends. Last time, it was a blast! We had a banquet, and there were 9 adults and 6 kids in our favourite Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown. We have all known each other for over 14 years now. One person wasn't there though. When we were walking and talker later on, two of my friends, individually of each other, told me about John. John has recently remarried and he and his new wife have been trying for the last few years for a baby. They showed me the messages they have received from him. It transpires he is giving up God, as he calls it, over this issue of not having the baby. My friends asked my advice. I said, to keep on encouraging, letting John know that while he may have let go of Jesus, Jesus has not let go of him or his wife. I also suggested that there are probably deeper issues as well, that John is not talking about. So my friends are going to continue encouraging John and uplifting him in prayer to the One who won't let go. So be encouraged! Don't give up! Encourage others who may be struggling. See and remember what the Lover is like! Be encouraged! Keep going! As Christians, if you are one here tonight, you are to bear fruit by remaining close to Jesus, as He is the vine and we are the branches. And why are we as Christians to bear fruit? As a means of bringing glory to God the Father (John 15v8). Be encouraged and be encouragers of others. Lover is like no other and wants to hear your voice. (Song of Solomon 2:10-15) The beloved speaks of the lover's voice. (Read v10-13) Then finally we hear the voice of the lover! (Read v14-15) Ever felt like God is far away? Well you aren't alone! It is an experience that is common to all Christians, at some point or another. I know I have experienced that in the past. But I also know from personal experience, that Jesus always comes through in difficult times. Although He may not come in the time I think He should come, because He knows when I need Him most. This woman, the beloved, is so expectant of the Lover's arrival she can hear his voice, his tender words! He is calling her to Himself! Jesus Christ is also calling you, to Himself! He wants you to be a partaker of the good news about Him. He wants you to be part of His family, the church. He is ever calling, ever beckoning people to enter into relationship with Him. His love for the church is indicative of verse 13, where he calls the beloved His beautiful bride. That is the church - warts and all - is His bride! By faith, He will see you through - Remember in the Gospels, when the disciples were in the storm and Jesus came to them walking on the water. Remember Jesus saying "Come" and Peter went to Him. This must have encouraged the other disciples, for upon seeing Jesus' power they worshipped him. Whatever troubles you are undergoing are temporary, and Jesus will see you through. Jesus is praying for you, will come to you, grow you and help you through troubles. By being obedient to God, you are encouraging others by showing your salvation and showing that faith is not blind, but active! Jesus wants to hear your voice talking to him... Not just for half hour in the morning but all day long. We are to yearn to talk to Him and for Him to talk to us. Prayer is a 24 hour communication exercise. Prayer, according to the Church Father Augustine, is a constant yearning for assistance and strengthening of desire towards the ultimate goal - eternal happiness and worship and knowledge of God. God Himself assists as we pray: by correcting and strengthening the yearnings. Prayers express desires and thoughts in a contributory way to the journey we are on. That means tell Jesus how you are feeling, both in the good and the hard times. Tell Him of your wants, your needs and all your cares.. Let His arms surround you! To him your voice is sweet and dulcet. Your face to Him is a delight. Seek him! Ask him! Talk to him! This is how you are spiritually energized! When you talk to God, you strengthen your relationship with Him! When you and I ask others to pray for us, Church unity is strengthened! Recap! So, how do we recapitulate. In this chapter, we firstly saw together the Beloved's portrait of the lover and how He feeds, nourishes protects and shelters her. We see this as an encompassing picture of Jesus and His love for His people, the Church. Then we saw how the Beloved lady encouraged others to wait and see this tremendous Lover. That is why we encourage one another and spur one another on as we see the day approaching when our bridegroom, Jesus Christ comes again in glory! Then lastly we saw how the bridegroom loves to hear the voice of the Beloved and gaze into her face. Jesus Christ, the great lover and bridegroom, loves to hear our voices as we express our love, gratitude, cares, worries and feelings to Him. Conclusion And what, in conclusion, do we do with all this? Jesus is the only nourisher, protector and feeder. Jesus Christ, the apple tree, provides for all your needs, your nourishment, gives you strength, protects and comforts. I don't know what situation you are in at the moment. This credit crunch, this economic crisis is affecting everybody. I guess there are probably three kinds of people here tonight. Firstly, there will be those who do not know this Jesus Christ personally. Please, do not leave here tonight without asking one of the leaders or your friends here, about how you can get to know more about this Jesus. The time is short, the waiting for Jesus to come again grows ever shorter, and when He does come again, the time will be too late to change your mind. Secondly, if you are in need of some love, some protection, some nourishment, then don't leave without having prayed with somebody or letting one of the leaders know of your needs. As Jesus Himself said, "Ask, Seek and Knock!" Jesus Christ is making intercessions for you, as He knows. He feels your cares and your worries, and knows what you are going through. Finally, if you are not in either of those situations yourself, you will know somebody who is. Therefore go and encourage those you know who are struggling and are in need of protection and comfort. This week, go and tell the good news of Jesus Christ to somebody who doesn't know Jesus personally. Right mouse click and save to download the MP3 file of this sermon.

Solomon the Wise prays to God, Dedicating the Temple! 2 Chronicles 6v1-21 What is the story so far? History is important though, not only to learn the lessons from it but also as Christians, the Bible shows how God has acted in human history. A brief recap of chapter 7. From the first 3 verses of chapter 7, we read the Chronicler regaling one of the many great WOW moments of the Old Testament. The time when the glory of the Lord came down like fire and filled the temple to overflowing! The people fell down in worship of a great God, who was their God! This was followed by a great scene of abundantly joyful sacrificial worship to this God! That must have been some prayer eh! Well, tonight as you may have gathered, we go back to looking at those prayers. Not in an exhaustive way, but to discover together what we can learn about God and His relationship with those who are His and seeing how this is relevant to us some 3 millennia later. During the intervening period, I wonder if Solomon had wrestled in his mind over what he prayed… Let us wrestle together now, in these prayers of his, albeit briefly. This is a key passage, a link if you like, between the Covenant that God made with Solomon's father, David, including the building of a House for God, the Temple, and the glory of the Lord filling the Temple in 2 Chronicles 7. This reflects I think, the necessity and vitality of prayer in the unfolding of God's will for humanity. The story is also regaled in 1 Kings 8 but with some nuance as you may expect. A Covenant Making God Down through history, the Bible reveals that God has made Covenants with humanity. A covenant is an important way to describe the progress of the relationship between God and humanity through the Biblical story. A covenant at the time of the Old Testament was a solemn commitment between the two covenanting parties to fulfil all the promises and obligations of the covenant. Covenants were common in all kinds of life, and not just between God and humanity. The idea comes from the sort of agreement commonly entered into in the ancient area round Israel between a high king, and a sub king or clan chief. It is easy to see how a covenant is a good way to describe the relationship between God and humanity. God, who promises to protect and help the human with faithfulness, and the human who promises to worship and honour God with faith. The Covenants between God and humanity have several things about them regarding the relationship. In these Covenants between God and humanity, God always took the initiative – sometimes by complete surprise. God has made certain commitments and has given His solemn promise to fulfil His end of the bargain. God waits for a response from humanity. God does not coerce or force but waits for humanity to take the responsibility of replying and acquiescing to God's covenantal promises through obedience, faithfulness and worship. There are Covenants made in the Garden of Eden, Covenants made in history with Adam, Noah and Abraham, but we will fast forward to the Covenant between God and Moses before going onto His covenant with Solomon's father, David. The Mosaic Covenant Why look at the Covenant made between God and Moses? We do so because there is a connection between that Covenant and the prayer of Solomon we are looking at tonight. Indeed the very Ark of the Covenant contained a gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and two tablets of stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. Charles Spurgeon commented “One is struck, with the fact that the language of Solomon is far from new, and is full of quotations from the Pentateuch (where the Mosaic Covenant is fully explained), some of which are almost word for word.” This covenant is between God and humanity, in this case with the particular nation of Israel. It commences with the stipulation “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine” (Exodus 19:5). This covenant was to Israel in order that those who believed God's promise, could know how to live righteously. Israel's task was to bring the knowledge of God to all the world so that blessing might come to all humanity. In this, however, they were to fail and only when Jesus came as the perfectly obedient Israelite was it to become possible that all the world should be blessed. This Mosaic covenant covered the three areas of life: The commandments were given so they would know how to relate socially to God correctly (Exodus 20:1-17) The judgments were given in order that they could relate socially to each other properly (Exodus 21:1 - 24:11 and in Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) The decrees dictate their religious life so that God could be approached by humanity on His terms (Exodus 24:12 - 31:18, and in Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). The Mosaic Covenant was never meant as a means by which humanity could achieve salvation with God. It was given so that they could realize the helplessness of their own efforts, and their need of God's help as well as expressing their devotion to the Lord. Yet they still failed to bring blessing to other peoples. Galatians 3:22-24 explains that the Law was only a protective fence until through the promised Messiah, when humanity could be made right with God through faith. That Messiah we know to be the man Jesus Christ. More later though. The Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7:4-17) Now we fast forward to the Covenant which was in place as Solomon dedicates the Temple to God and is mentioned here. This covenant that God made with David, Solomon's father. Three great things were promised: A land forever (2 Samuel 7:10); A dynasty without end (2 Samuel 7:11, 16) A perpetual kingdom (2 Samuel 7:13, 16) Through the Covenants we see a God who is willing to interact with His creation and bless it. When first century Christians such as the Apostles Paul, Peter and John checked and thought over all the events surrounding the life of Jesus Christ, they searched their Scriptures (our Old Testament). It was as God the Holy Spirit illuminated their minds, that they wrote down and passed on the whole range of Old Testament promises which were fulfilled in God's Messiah and the world's hope - Jesus Christ and Him alone. That is why it is important for us as twenty-first century Christian Disciples to read our Old Testament as well as the New Testament. For by reading the Old Testament, new light is shed upon our own understanding of the New Testament. One of the fundamentals of understanding the Bible, is to let the Bible interpret the Bible. There is one more Covenant of God which we are to look at tonight, but we will see that shortly! We press on with these prayers of Solomon. There are 3 prayers here. v1-2 are opening words of praise to God v4-11 are the 2nd prayer v16-41 are the 3rd prayer. We won't go into any great detail tonight, you will no doubt be glad to know. We will get to about verse 21 I think. But with a very general overview, let's look together and see what we can learn together from the wise man Solomon about God and about prayer. Charles Spurgeon said that “It is worthy of remark concerning this prayer that it is as full and comprehensive as if it were meant to be the summary of all future prayers offered in the temple.” Part 1 1. Verses 1 & 2 - Solomon acknowledges God's presence in the cloud Here we see that Solomon acknowledges God's presence in the cloud. The cloud of God's glory has a long association with His presence. Solomon knew that the presence of the cloud meant that God dwelt in the temple in a special way. It was to be a special place to come and meet with God. It was symbolic of God living with His people. 2.Verses 3 to 9 – Solomon blessed the people and blesses God. Here we see that Solomon blessed the people and blesses God. Solomon knew, affirmed and recognized that the completion of the Temple was the fulfilment of the plan of God and not of Solomon himself or indeed of his father David. God's plan. David and Solomon were merely the human instruments, they were God's arms and legs, but the work was affirmed to be God's alone! God's actions or work have confirmed His words, His promises! God's hands were at work building the Temple as He guided and strengthened the human workers who contributed themselves to its construction. Solomon recounts how their ancestors had escaped from Egypt in the Exodus 500 years hence. This shows its importance to the people of Israel at the time! Their minds were singing “If the Lord can bring us out of Egypt and rescue us, He will help us establish ourselves as a nation and build this Temple in order to worship Him. “ God is faithful to His promises. Down through the ages God has been faithful and keeping His part of the Covenant that He made with people. Later when we come to conclude we will see together briefly the promises of God for the Christian, including us today almost 3 millennia later. Solomon now issues a statement concerning his father, David! Why David was not to build it. Though David, the mighty King had done extensive preparations for it, he didn't actually complete it. The completion was left for his son, Solomon. Why? Because of God's ideal of rest for his King and for his people. David had fought many wars and battles. It was part of his rest in God not to build the Temple. Solomon was spared the emotional turmoil of war, so could dedicate his energies to building the Temple – the House of God. 3. Verses 10-11 - Solomon presents the finished temple unto God. And with verses 10 to 11, we see that Solomon presents the finished Temple to God. Solomon recognized that being the successor of his father David to the throne of Israel was significant. He then places the Ark of the Covenant, in its resting place in the Temple. The Ark of the Covenant was a physical representation of God's promised presence with His people, the nation of Israel. It was a wooden chest clad with gold containing a gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. Solomon speaks of a God who fulfilled with His hands what He had spoken with His mouth. God had said what He was going to do, and then went and did it. How are we doing at worshipping as we work for the Lord? Are we workers primarily and then click a switch to engage worship mode as we come here on a Sunday? Or do we consider ourselves God worshippers as we work? God wants worshippers before workers. In God's mind, the only acceptable workers are those who have learnt the art of worship. Do you consider all you do as acts of worship to God? Everything you do as acts of worship to God? Because that is the kind of people God wants and desires, the kind of people who worship Him in Spirit and in truth and in all aspects of life – not just for a couple of hours on a Sunday. With those thoughts, let's take a break now to sing to this amazing God we love, serve and are to keep our vision upon – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Part 2. Solomon's prayer. Verses 12-14 - Humility before and praise unto God. .Here in verses 12 to 14 we see that Solomon stands before the altar of the Lord. Solomon did not dedicate the Temple from within the Temple itself because that would have been the wrong place. That was where only the Priest could go, so Solomon stands outside, raised up so that the throngs of people could see him. Before the altar, spreading out his hands in an act of symbolism - reaching out toward heaven in a gesture of surrender, openness, and ready reception. Here Solomon recognizes that God was and is completely unique in all facets of being and expresses it. The false and pretend gods of the nations around Israel could not compare to Him in any way. Verses 15-17 - Solomon recognizes God as the maker and keeper of promises. Solomon commences now to thankfully praise God, because God has kept all His promises that He had mad in the past. Have you done that in your prayer life? Speaking out thanks for what God has done for you in the past? He continues and calls upon God to keep the promises that He has now made. We are, as His people, to take on board God's promises, take them to heart in faith, and then boldly and reverently call upon Him to fulfil the promises. Again, is that part of your prayer life? God promises and we are to appropriate, take hold of them and proclaim them, taking them on board in our life by faith, knowing that God fulfils the promises that He makes to people. Verses 18-21 - Solomon asks God to dwell in this place and honour those who seek Him here. Solomon now asks a question in this prayer! How often have you and I asked God questions as we pray, rather than just listing off our demands. God would reside in the Temple but not to the exclusion of other places. While God would have a special presence in the Temple, He would not be restricted to it. Solomon asks God to listen to His people as they pray and worship in this Temple dedicated to Him. When God hears the prayers made in the Tempe, Solomon implores that He would forgive His people and probably the greatest answer to prayer that they could expect. Conclusion - Promises of God for the Christian After such a prayer, how can we conclude? What are the challenges and comforts we have seen from this passage of Scripture? This Temple was destroyed about 400 years later by the Babylonians. It is long gone. What about David's Covenant though? Was that ever fulfilled? Remember David's Covenant which we looked at briefly earlier on? Was that ever fulfilled? We can say that it has been! It was fulfilled gloriously in the coming of God, in the man Jesus Christ. When the great God did indeed come as a human being in the person we know as Jesus Christ. It is historical fact. 2 Samuel 7:12 predicted the birth of Solomon as David's successor to the throne, with his role being to establish David's throne forever (2 Samuel 7:13). We see this link to the man Jesus Christ, through the genealogies to both Joseph: who had a legal right to King David's throne (Matthew 1:1-17) and to Mary: who had a blood right to King David's throne (Luke 3:23-38). The land is the whole world, now potentially the sphere of the rule of Jesus (Romans 4:13); the dynasty was, through Solomon, eventually to be the eternal son, Jesus (Matthew 1:1, 6, 16; Luke 3:23, 31); the Kingdom is the kingdom of God, now established, and ever growing in the world in which we live. (Matthew 11:12) All of which were fulfilled gloriously in the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus the Messiah, the Saviour. Jesus Christ – fully God and fully human. Not just for the Jews but for all people of every race and language. Really that should make us go WOW in awe of our God. Our God is the God of history and has stepped into history as a human being. The New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Luke 22:15-20) We see all this in what is called the New Covenant. Four features of this covenant are: Regeneration – God will write His law on the hearts of people. (Jeremiah 31:33) Restoration - God will be their God, and they will be God's people. (Jeremiah 31:33) Promised Holy Spirit – God will indwell people and they will be led by Him (Jeremiah 31:34) Justification – Sins will be forgiven, removed and remembered no more (Jeremiah 31:34) This new covenant is sealed only through the perfect sacrifice of the God-Man Jesus on the cross. His death ensures the truth of this New Covenant. His death pays the penalty for the sins of all people. That is why we are to say yes to God and His New Covenant. This New Covenant can be contrasted with the Old Covenant, the Mosaic covenant that we looked at earlier, (Jeremiah 31:32; Hebrews 8:6-13) because this New Covenant finalizes and makes possible what the Mosaic Covenant could only point to: the follower of God living in a righteous life conforming to God's holy character. Solomon asks in verse 18 “But will God really dwell on earth with humans? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple that I have built!” In Solomon's direct context, he was talking about the Temple which he was dedicating to God. In the overall context of the Bible, however, God did indeed come and dwell on earth. Not just with humans, but to be a human. Jesus Christ, the God-man. God keeps His promises and Jesus Christ is evidence of that. Oh that is so easy to forget when we are undergoing the trials of life. In what way does God keep His promises to us today? Five quick statements. By faith, He is praying for us. God the Son, Jesus Christ is making intercessions for Christians (Romans 8:34). He knows our troubles and He feels our cares and knows what we are going through (Hebrews 4:14-16). Isn't that simply amazing and oh how easily we forget. By faith - He will come to us. Have you ever felt like God is far away? Well you aren't alone! Solomon's father, David, often felt that God was far away and unconcerned with his life. Just a cursory look in the Psalms will reveal that. However he also knew that God would ultimately rescue him. Jesus always comes to us through difficult times. Although He may not come in the time we think He should come, because He knows when we need Him most. By faith - He will help us grow - Once, when His disciples were in the storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus came to them walking on the water (Matthew 14:22-33). The purpose of this incident was to show that Jesus would be leaving them soon, so they had to learn to trust in Him when He wasn't physically present. One of those disciples, Peter, wrote later on in his life, “for the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers” (1 Peter 3:12). How are you growing as a follower of Jesus? Not only in your knowledge but also in your transformation and development? As we are being transformed by the power of God the Holy Spirit into the image of God the Son, Jesus Christ, it is to the praise and glory of God the Father. Our transformation reveals God at work. By faith, He will see us through - Again, when the disciples were in the storm, Jesus said “Come” and Peter went with Him. This must have encouraged the other disciples, for upon seeing Jesus' power they worshipped him. Whatever troubles you are undergoing are temporary, and Jesus will see you through. For various reasons 2015 for Youngmi and I started out as if it could be our annus horribilus. Yet it became our annus mirabilis instead as we saw God at work each day throughout the year. By faith, you have salvation - if you are trusting in Jesus alone for your salvation. By faith Jesus is praying for you, will come to you, grow you and help you through troubles. By being obedient to God, you and I are showing others our salvation and showing that faith, is not blind, but active. We can be obedient to Him by relying on His strength and wisdom. We are to be faithful to God and show it by being obedient to Him and getting on with the work we have been given, just as Solomon was in getting the Temple competed. Is your work worship or your worship work? As we go out tonight, let us remember that God keeps His promises, He is listening to your prayers and He wants us to be in a dynamic moment by moment relationship with Himself. This great God wants you and I to be actively obedient to Him in all facets of our lives – our work, our play, our conversations, our worship and our relationships. If you are struggling in a particular area, get trusted others to pray for you and to hold you accountable – that is part of discipleship – part of following and loving God. Our verse for the year as a Church is Psalm 105:4 “Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.” That was what Solomon did in the building of the Temple. That is what we are to do as well, as I am sure you are aware. Not only the Church here as a whole, but as individual followers of Jesus Christ. If we try to do it in our own strength we will fail. If we do it in the strength of the God we proclaim to love, worship, serve and glorify then we can – because all glory and honour will go to Him and Him alone. As we go, are we ready in some way to tell others about this great God we claim is great and sing here in this fabulous building of our love and service? Are we ready to enable and encourage each other in the faith, and not just our friends and favourites, in some way as we see need? Are we actively engaging with the great God throughout each day, worshipping Him in all aspects of life and letting Him have dominion over every aspect of our lives as we put our trust fully in Him and in all aspects of life? We are to be faithful to God and show it by being obedient to Him and getting on with the work we have been given, just as Solomon was in getting the job done. As a general observation, most of the Church is scared of that word evangelism. We are not all to be evangelists like the Billy Grahams or Bruce Kitchings of this world, but we are to tell and show others about the God we claim to love and are in covenant with. Let's go WOW the world, all of it, including our little corner here for God with the news of our God – the God who is outside of time who stepped down into time, into human history, in order that humanity could choose to follow Him or not - to be His children or not. Let's keep our eyes fixed firmly on our God as we seek to enable and encourage – not just as a church body but also as individuals to all others that we meet. We are the Church on the hill. Let us, both as a church and as individuals, “Look to the LORD and his strength; seeking his face always.” Let's go WOW for God together, heeding His advice and worshipping Him alone in all facets of life. Are you tired and in need of comfort from all the challenges you are having to endure? Keep your eyes on God and allow Him to embrace you, comfort and lift you up. Remember that He is for you, He lives within you and you are His child. Are you too comfortable? In need of a challenge to stop you becoming complacent? Ask God to help you overcome, to empower you and seek His face and wisdom. Ask for His strength to help you do what He has asked you to do? The God we have comforts us in our challenges and challenges us in our comfort. We have an amazingly glorious God! Let's have a minute or two to bring ourselves before God and ask God to help you as only He can. Then I will close with a prayer before we go on to have our final song together. On this momentous occasion, the tenth episode of Giving Up and the last episode before the holiday break, John, Youngmi, and Alex reflect on the past half season, share in their distrust of lakes, and finally dive into the Half Baked Harvest controversy that they've been threatening to talk about for months. The crew ends the season with a rousing Newlywed Game and by sharing their hopes for 2024.
Returning after a two-week break in recording the crew catches up about Alex's trip to Mexico, Youngmi's son's pneumonia, and John's completely baseless feeling that Alex and Youngmi are mad at him because they stopped responding to the group text for five hours last Friday. The thunderdome yields a discussion of online fame.
Sorry if you're seeing this twice! A draft of the episode went up on Sunday by mistake, but we're not mad at you for listening!!! In this episode the crew wonders why the discussion always comes back to defecation and Alex and Youngmi are horrified that John sometimes forgets to eat. The Thunderdome results in a discussion of how each generation has a different level of intimacy with technology. Just a heads up: this episode contains some discussion of disordered eating and intimate partner violence.
The crew starts with a fullsome discussion of constipation and infant feces before consoling John about the demise of his non-alcoholic drink company. The Thunderdome finds John, Alex, and Youngmi diving into their pasts with surprising results.
John laments his indifference towards his own birthday while Alex and Youngmi ponder how to raise oppression-aware children without making them insufferable perma-victims. The Thunderdome features a surprisingly magnanimous outcome and the crew wonders, finally, what trick-or-treating will look like after the apocalypse.
Without planning on it, Alex, John, and Youngmi end up recording a Halloween special. John tells the group what it's like to have sleep paralysis and Alex recounts the time she cast a spell on herself and accidentally burned her house down. Spooky season indeed.
On the series premiere Alex, John, and Youngmi figure out the show format in real time. Starting with the segment "Are You Mad At Me?" they each take turns sharing why they think the world is mad at them this week before diving into the The Thunderdome, the heart of the show where each host pitches a topic and votes on what they'll discuss during the episode.

This week we're chatting with comedian, activist, and podcast host Youngmi Mayer, who's based in New York City's Chinatown. Host Mae Hamilton, AFAR's assistant editor, first came upon Youngmi on Instagram. Youngmi's post about not quite fitting in with Korean or American culture really resonated with Mae, and made her feel seen in a way she hadn't before as a half Taiwanese and half white American person. Soon Mae began tuning in weekly to Youngmi's podcast Hairy Butthole—based on the Korean saying “If you laugh while crying, hair will grow out of your butthole”—and quickly became a big Youngmi fan. In this episode, Mae talks with Youngmi about a recent trip she took to her childhood homes in Korea and Saipan, an island near Guam. Youngmi had a traumatic childhood, a subject which makes a regular appearance in her standup. So returning home for her has always been a bit . . . complicated. So they discuss what it's like to travel to a place that has emotional baggage for you and how to still find beauty in it. They also talk about Asian moms, what it's like to be biracial and Asian American, and why these identities can be so complex. I shared how the WOW factor of Jesus for me included his uniqueness, majesty, tenderness, wisdom, strength and loveliness. That this extraordinary Jesus loves us with an unparalleled and creative passion! Then we looked at the WOW factor having an impact on communities by way of us as Christians being as Jesus, through loving, serving and giving to others! We saw that by using the power and strength of the Holy Spirit within us, meant that we would never tire of loving, serving and giving to others. Then finally, this Jesus will be returning and will do the most extraordinary thing to all those who persevere - Revelation 21:4 'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. That's a WOW factor of Jesus! How has your WOW factor of Jesus been this past week?It would be lovely to just stay there and bask in that WOW factor but that would not be the full picture! We have to live between the present and the future and Jesus has left us with a job to do! Anybody here find that following Jesus closely easy? Not just me then! 1. Hard sayings of Jesus Jesus said some very difficult things, even a cursory glance at the Gospel record will reveal that! Let's have a look together at just a couple of examples from many! a. I want to be number one! Here is a case in point! Jesus wants to be number one in the life of all those who choose to follow him! Jesus wants supremacy over everything in our lives, including family, friends, and possessions!! Alas, that's a cost too high for some! Within the Gospels, there is the story told of Jesus' encounter with a man, who we shall call, Basil. Basil runs up to Jesus and wants eternal life, wants it now and asks Jesus about how to get it. He has fully kept the commandments listed by Jesus. However when Jesus said to Basil that in order to follow Him, he would have to give up all his wealth and possessions in order to have treasure in heaven and eternal life, Basil leaves disconsolate and shattered. The life of Basil, this rich young ruler, reflected a life of absorption with his own self-interest and self-importance!.It was a step too far for Basil. He wanted his riches and also everlasting life, but Jesus said he couldn't have both. He remains the only person that we know of, who left Jesus' presence sorrowful, and that due to putting his trust in himself, his riches and wealth alone. Now riches, in and of themselves, are not necessarily wrong! But for Basil, well, he was not willing to make the sacrifice required to follow Jesus. He couldn't count the cost of following Jesus- it was too high a price for him to pay! What have you given up in and as a result of your decision to follow Jesus? Making sacrifices to follow Jesus is all part of the WOW factor of Jesus. Jesus demands His being number one and supreme over everything else in your life - yourself, family, others and material goods including money and possessions. How's your WOW Factor now? b. Watch what you say and think! Here is another case in point! As part of our living as followers of Jesus, here is something which has the capability of affecting every person on the planet.Jesus, our Master, said in Matthew 12:36-37 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." Jesus took words and thoughts extremely seriously! Jesus' words encouraged others gently towards paths of right living. He spoke words of love, kindness, rebuke, forgiveness, encouragement and blessing upon and to others! Jesus is to be our guide and Master in the use of thoughts and words. In Matthew 5:21-22, Jesus equates calling somebody a fool with the physical act of murder! Murder has its beginning in anger developing into uncontrollable rage! Improper attitudes, words and thoughts can lead you and I to sin if we don't stop their destructive use quickly! May the words we communicate and think about, be like those of Jesus - "full of grace". How is your WOW factor of Jesus now? When Jesus Christ called you to follow Him, He called you to follow Him wholeheartedly and be committed to only Him. Jesus calls you and I, to love God and be totally committed to Him.We are to be little Jesus' to a community that probably has the wrong idea of our Jesus. A Christian living a life without the commitment is not being a "little Jesus". In reality such a person is just a better rip-off artist. Being a 'little Jesus', is endeavouring to be an authentic representation of Jesus. How is your WOW factor of Jesus now?One way is to be encouraged in these matters is by gathering with other Christians! Tim has recently been away to New Wine and is going to come and share with us of his experience there! 2. Go Live! As part of this life of following Jesus, being totally committed to Him and using our words and thoughts appropriately, we have a job to do! As those who claim to follow Jesus, we are to be witnesses of the goodness of the God! We are to proclaim and call people back to a full life in God. Its part of the WOW factor! The followers of Jesus are to show and tell others of this WOW factor of Jesus to all people of all time. It is not forcing people to adopt Church standards! It is not simply a message of join the church as a symbol of good works. It isn't just "making converts" as it were and leaving them! That's almost spiritual abuse! No! It is making disciples and ensuring that a measure of guidance and care is given to these new Christian disciples. We are to make disciples who love God and show they love God by serving and giving! How's your WOW Factor of Jesus now? I wonder if sometimes you feel just like giving up and just being buried by whatever is burdening you. I guess, almost everyone has felt like that at one time or another, so I wont be alone. Maybe its because you are undergoing troubles or suffering - physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. Whatever it is, as a Christian you are to persevere. We persevere, because as I shall soon reflect upon, we are not alone in our troubles. Also, if we think about it, in the light of eternity, the time of endurance through these troubles, is but the blink of an eye! How is your WOW factor of Jesus? 2a We are to be productive! As we go about this, living a lifestyle worthy of Jesus Christ, for now just three quick things that Jesus said about being His disciple! As His followers, we are to be productive and bear fruit for Jesus and the Kingdom of God! We are to do this, Jesus tells us, by continuing to love Him and to show this love by sacrificially loving others joyfully. Part of the WOW Factor of Jesus Christ, is to show we love God by loving, serving and giving to others. By doing these things, we will bear much good fruit for God's greater glory. Not all the fruit you produce will be seen by you in your life time! I am looking forward to meeting the thousands of people who have heard my voice over the internet and never physically met yet! I am hoping that I have been an encouragement to them in their life of Christian discipleship. How are you bearing fruit for kingdom having been sent by Jesus into the community here in Ringwood? How is your WOW factor of Jesus now? 2b We are to be prepared! (John 15v18-27)As we bear fruit, we are told that we are to be prepared! Prepared to suffer for the sake of Jesus Christ. Are you prepared for that? In John 15, we read that all followers of Jesus Christ will suffer for the kingdom by way of persecution and hatred by those who are not followers of Jesus.Jesus is always honest about following Him and having the WOW factor about Him. In John 15, Jesus declares a warning and the context into which He sends His followers. Opposition to the message of Jesus is unavoidable. Opposition is to be expected simply because of who Jesus is (John 15v21). As you and I share in the life of Jesus and the way the world out there treats Jesus is the way the world treats all His followers (John 15v20-21). Opposition also comes through revealing evil, because Jesus, as the Light of the World, exposes evil and sin through His words (John 15v22) and works (John 15v24). At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus commanded all those who follow Him, to also be "lights of the world". This is done by consistently ensuring that our works and words match our lifestyle and that no hypocrisy will be found. Opposition brings persecution, and regularly throughout history, Christian believers have been persecuted for their faith in Jesus. In our own time, perhaps the most persecuted century of all. In the UK, we don't have too much apart from ridicule and ambivalence. But we do have brothers and sisters in countries around the world who daily face death simply because they choose to follow Jesus.Being a Christian is not an easy decision, particularly for those where systematic and endemic persecution exists, but it is worth it. But how is it endured and overcome? How is your WOW factor of Jesus now? 3. We are to persevere! We are to produce fruit! We are to be prepared! And we are to persevere! Persevere through times of trouble, through persecution and through times when things are going well! Here is a WOW factor for you! We are not left alone to our own devices! If that were the case, the church wouldn't have survived a month let alone 2000 years so far! No! Part of the WOW factor of Jesus Christ is that we have help! Praise God for that! The reason we can bear fruit and endure persecutions and sufferings is because we have help available! 3a. Jesus! A major help available to us is Jesus Himself! Jesus has overcome the world and nothing can prevail against Him!We also have Jesus' provision, through answered prayer! When we supply the needs of others, through loving, serving and giving, prayers are answered! I cant tell you how many times the needs of Youngmi and I have been filled just in time! Who knows whose prayers you may answer by helping to supply their needs! That's why we aren't to be greedy with the resources we have been given by this Jesus, hoarding them for ourselves to the mutual exclusion of others! WOW! How is your WOW factor about Jesus now? 3b. Holy Spirit The other person to help us produce fruit, endure persecutions and suffering and to persevere is that amazing person, God the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit who lives inside us, comforts and urges us on! WOW!The Holy Spirit seeking to glorify Jesus Christ and testify about Him! The Holy Spirit who lives within and ministers to people in need. The Holy Spirit declaring, interpreting and illuminating the Bible to people! The Holy Spirit convicting people of sin, righteousness and judgment. Through this third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, followers of Jesus Christ are born again, regenerated, indwelt, sealed, secured, sanctified, baptised and filled. I realise these are big words and concepts and if you need help understanding them, come and ask, as I have some material I can get to you about it. God is working in you and I to will and to act accordingly to his purpose! Let's produce! Let's be prepared! Let's persevere! How is your WOW factor of Jesus now? The way the Holy Spirit works within you, is probably going to be entirely different to the way He works in somebody else! How He fills, controls, baptizes and transforms you may not be how He fills, controls, baptizes, convicts and transforms that person sitting next to you! I used to think that the Holy Spirit only worked in a one-size-fits-all mode! I was only recently convicted of that attitude and no longer try to fit Him into a box!The Holy Spirit deals with each individual on an individual basis and that is His right to! Too many Christians that I see and counsel are more worried about how the Spirit works in the life of somebody else than they are about how He is working in their own life! Get over it! We each have our own individuality and personality, so let the Holy Spirit work within you and don't be so concerned about how He is filling, baptizing and transforming somebody else.As for your use of words, let the Holy Spirit who lives inside you, help you to use your words for the supreme glory of Jesus Christ, who after all is your Master! By doing that, you will truly be seen to be one of His followers! Jesus is to have supremacy over all things in your life, including your words! How is your WOW factor of Jesus now? 4. Jesus makes a reappearance! But what sort of things will we have to go through for the sake of Jesus, as we go about bearing fruit for Him as we love, serve and give to others generously. What opposition and temptations will we face? We get a good idea of that by reading the rest of the New Testament and in particular the early chapters of the Book of Revelation! For here, Jesus reappears to his old mate, John! We don't have time to go into every nuance and detail, but again, you can do that for yourself! Here is a good book for you! If you want it, come and see me after and I will give it to you. From our first reading we heard how John describes the ascended Jesus in Revelation 1v12-16! WOW!I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. John had just a got a new WOW Factor of Jesus! That figure is the risen and ascended Jesus Christ! The one proclaimed as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Here in Revelation 2 and 3, this Jesus sends messages to seven groups of people who have taken Him up on that offer of salvation!: the first century churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. The message has gone out as commanded into Asia!Look how Jesus describes Himself in these messages! 4a. Jesus own WOW factor Jesus holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. Jesus who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again! WOW! Jesus who has the sharp, double-edged sword, is the Son of God and whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. WOW! Jesus who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. Jesus who is holy and true and holds the key of David. Jesus who opens what no one can shut and shuts what no one else can open. Jesus who is the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. WOW! Hows your WOW factor of Jesus now? 4b. Keep doing! To these 7 churches, of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, Jesus praises them individually and separately! They are to continue doing such things as working hard for the Gospel, remaining faithful, not tolerating evil, not being seduced by false teachers, for persevering and enduring hardship and not growing weary. Jesus praises them for being faithful through suffering, poverty and persecution for His sake. Jesus praises them for remaining true to Him and for not renouncing their faith! Jesus, the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, being ever gracious to His followers. WOW!I wonder what Jesus would praise this church and you for? 4c. Stop doing But He also rebukes them and commands that they stop doing certain things! They are to stop listening to various false teachers and prophets, being swayed by their clever and seductive words and actions. He rebukes because they have forgotten that they are to love Jesus above all and they have forsaken him. In his rebuke, Jesus commands that they repent, that is to ask Him for forgiveness and be willing to turn away from the false teachers, false prophets and false way of living.I wonder what Jesus would rebuke this church and you for?d. The blessings! Now, we have a real WOW factor here! To all those who persevere, overcome and are victorious, Jesus will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. To all those who overcome and are victorious, they wont be hurt by the second death. To all those who overcome and are victorious, Jesus will give the victor's crown! WOW! Those who overcome and are victorious, will be given authority over the nations! WOW! To those who overcome and are victorious, they will be in the temple of God, never to leave it! Jesus will do the most extraordinary thing, of writing on them the name of God, the city of God and His new name! WOW! To those who overcome and are victorious, their name will be in the book of life, and Jesus will acknowledge them before God the Father and his angels. WOW. Then finally, for those who overcome and are victorious, they will sit with their Master, the Lord Jesus Christ, on His throne, just as He was victorious and sat down with His Father on his throne. WOW - that's you and me if we hold out to the end! How's your WOW factor of Jesus now? Conclusion What can we say as we conclude? We saw that Jesus had some hard things to say to those who would follow Him! In our examples, Jesus wants priority in all aspects of our lives and he wants us to speak and think like He does!! As we live for Him, we have a job to do and we are to be productive, be prepared to suffer for the sake of Jesus and to persevere through thick and thin! Then we saw how Jesus sent a message for 7 churches through his beloved friend and follower, John. A message about Jesus, the things they were to keep doing, things they were to stop doing and how as overcomers they will be blessed! That's all part of the WOW factor of Jesus! It is this Jesus, we need to get out there, by all means possible. We have a creative God with a vast imagination! We, as a group of believers, can reflect that creativity to those not knowing Jesus personally. But it will take working together, and with other churches here, celebrating our differences yet united in our worship of the living Jesus Christ. The same Spirit lives within all those who are followers of Jesus! The WOW Factor of Jesus - the church as an image of the Trinity who love each other, just as each member of the Trinity, Father, Son and Spirit love each other! The WOW Factor of Jesus which says if we in the church cant love each other why should those outside the church take any notice of our God we proclaim to love? Let me ask again, how are your travels with Jesus? Let us go from here determined to be effective witnesses for Jesus in our community, going out to produce fruit for the Kingdom of Jesus, being prepared to be persecuted for our faith and knowing that as we do these things, we are not alone, because we have the power, strength and encouragement of the Holy Spirit within us. Finally, you may not yet be a follower of Jesus Christ. I don't know. If that is you, then I would urge you to accept His call upon you: for He is calling you. You may not get another chance. If that is you, then please don't leave here without talking to somebody about this Jesus. Know that Jesus calls you by name, just as He did Saul, myself and innumerable others. Jesus invites you to have a WOW factor with and about Him. Right mouse click or tap here to download as a MP3 audio file You can now purchase our Partakers books! I'm your host, Jenn Welch I am. Ah, deep breath. That was more of an exhale. Okay, so I am here today with my guest who I'm so excited to have on the podcast. Because of for so many reasons, but especially because I won't get into it. But um, she has an amazing podcast called feeling Asian that she hosts with another very funny comedian named Brian Park. Um, and she is great. And everybody is clapping for you. Just a heads up. Everybody's so excited. It's like worrying, like the audience is so loud. It's guys. Here she is Youngmi Mayer. Yay. Hi. Youngmi Mayer 1:12 Hi, john. How are you? Jenn Welch 1:14 Oh my god. I'm here. How are you? Youngmi Mayer 1:20 I'm really good. I um, I had I had a like a zoom work call today one zoom meeting and it you know, it ruined my entire life. I'm completely wiped out. Jenn Welch 1:34 Yes. Was it same minute saying? Oh my god. Yeah. I if I have one thing on my to do list these days that involves interacting with another person. That's it. Like, I it's too much. Youngmi Mayer 1:47 Yeah, it's done. It's over. Yeah. And then I knew that I would. I was gonna do this with you at six. So like, starting at four, I started like, spiraling and being like, I can't do it. I gotta lay down in bed and just get ready for 6pm. Doing Jenn Welch 2:06 having, you don't have ADD? I don't know what you're talking about. I that's incredible. And yes, um, I Okay, before we get too far in, because I normally do this before we start and you might remember this from improv class, but um, I, I because we I like my conversations to be loosey goosey. And like, kind of just see where they go. So if at any point, we get to something where you're like, I don't want to talk about that, Jen. You can just yell boundaries. And I'll yell boundaries. And then we'll like cheer and move on. Because we celebrate boundaries in life. Okay, so that's just I'm putting that out there. So you know, if we get into anything weird, not like, I don't can't even imagine what we would get to that I would be like, but who knows? Some people have things where they're like, I don't want to talk about that in a podcast. You don't I mean, yeah, Youngmi Mayer 2:55 I have no boundaries. So it's probably not going to happen. I would be shocked if it happened. Giving me that option. Jenn Welch 3:03 Of course, of course, I'm. So we actually met a few years ago, when I was teaching improv, and you came in and you were a student. And you were so funny. Oh, you're so but you were so quiet. And I remember just being like, She's so funny. And then I remember you asking me like something about like, doing sketch comedy, or doing stand up and I was like, please do it, please do it, please do it. And then all of a sudden, I started seeing your name pop up everywhere. And I just have been like, over here just like kind of, not to be a creep. Okay, not to be a creep, but I've been, but I've been, you know, you keep track of certain people. And I've been over here just kind of like watching you like, like, blooming again, blossom, you know, and I it's just been so exciting to see. And I you're just like fucking killing it. And I think you're funnier than me. And, and that's true. I just want to put that out there. But like, Youngmi Mayer 4:10 you're allowed to have your feelings but you know, that doesn't mean that they're true. Jenn Welch 4:14 That's right. feelings aren't facts. But it's been so awesome to see cuz I just remember you being in class and and again, just like being this like, a quiet, like, certain students are just like quiet thunder, like, you know, like they're not that was like, outgoing. Like, I don't want to say you're not outgoing. Because clearly, you know, you know, whatever. But um, yeah, what Tell me tell me things. Youngmi Mayer 4:41 You know what's so crazy Jen? I like so I had this like whole so I started comedy very late. I'm like, old I'm like 36 I started when I was 33. I think I was in your class. Yeah. And it's like something I wanted to do all my life and it was like the sort of like, like something happened in therapy where I had like enough. epiphany and I was like, I gotta do this now whatever, right? And then, and now I'm like very loud and extrovert I'm like comfortable doing stand up, I can talk in front of a room of people clip just been doing it for three years, which isn't that long, but I've just been doing it every day. But I I, for most of my life until I was 33. I was like the person that you were describing, I was just very quiet and never said anything. I was really shy and, you know, like, like, anxious all the time. And he never talks out loud. And so it's interesting to hear you say that, because I forget so often that that I've only recently like, sort of come out of my shell. Jenn Welch 5:40 Yes. So here's that. Here's the thing that I don't tell you guys what I'm teaching. But I didn't start I may have mentioned this, but like, I didn't start doing improv. I was also a late joiner to The Club. I didn't start doing improv until I was 30. And I, I was writing comedy before that, but I avoided performing at all costs, because I hated being in front of people. And I hated like having to talk in front of a group. And, and I was so like, scared to like, talk in front of anybody. And then. And then I did improv, and I was like, holy shit. And then eventually, like, stand up was like what I wanted to be doing right. And that took me like, a few years to like, get there. So I didn't start stand up until I was 34. And, yeah, and I, I think I'm making assumptions. But I, I'm just going to talk about my experience. But when I started improv, also, it was because of a therapy session where we put together a SMART goal. And it like a SMART goal is like, specific, measurable. actionable, I think, realistic and timely, or something like that. Anyway, so so it was like, it's something you like, take an action on. It's realistic in like a reasonable amount of time. And so my SMART goal that we put together was for me to sign up for a level zero improv class. Oh, wow. Yeah. And that like, is just kind of like, what kicked it off. And I was. At that point, I was seven years into a while, I mean, three years into the marriage, but seven years into a very bad relationship. Wow. And so he was a musician, and everything revolved around him doing music. And so for me to like, do this was like a big deal. And that doing that class gave me confidence down the line, to be able to get out of that marriage and that situation. And like, basically, I don't even recognize who I was, anymore. Youngmi Mayer 7:52 Well, you know, that's, that's also very similar. I wasn't in a horrible relationship, but I wasn't in a long term relationship. I was married. Yeah. And, and I was supporting his career to, uh huh. And it wasn't a bad like, he is fine. But I just didn't want that role in life, like the caretaker role. And I think we were so used to that being like me being like, his manager or something. And I was like, I don't want to do this anymore. And then we got divorced. And then like, around the same time, I think I got divorced right after starting your class, I think that fall or the next spring or something like that. So. So that's so interesting that we have so many similarities. Jenn Welch 8:33 Yeah. Yeah. It's It's crazy how that like, and when I say it was like, a bad relationship. It was. It wasn't like, oh, he like MMA. I mean, yeah, yeah. But it was healthy for you. I was like, a shell of a person. Like, yeah, yeah. It was like a very, and a lot of it. Like, I mean, not a lot of it, but a big part of it was Unknown 8:57 I Jenn Welch 8:59 trying to, like, be a wife that he wanted me to be when I have ADHD and I'm constantly like, fighting against all of my, like, natural impulses to like, yeah, a wife who manages groceries and keeps the house clean and close and all of that stuff. Youngmi Mayer 9:22 I like don't know, when I wake up, I wake up every single day in a panic. Not sure what's gonna happen. Yeah, it's like so bad. And you know, I have a son and it's, I feel bad because I feel like he has like, he has some like, not behavioral issues, but he has like, he struggles with certain things at school because I think because of me, you know, not not to like be too hard on myself. But like, the teacher will be like, well, when's his bath time I'm like, I don't know. I don't even I sometimes I give him a bath. And I'm just like, like, sometimes at 9am sometimes At 3pm I like I don't you don't I mean, yeah, when When does he go to bed? And I'm like, ah, I swear he's sleepy at night. I was like, it's for what I'm trying to fix that for him. But like, oh, but I wanted to say the thing about the Epiphany, the thing that I had in my therapy session, it was really crazy. Because you you said, like, you set like an actionable goal or something like that. Yeah. What happened for me was like, my entire life. I always wanted to do comedy, right? Yeah. And I had literally never told a single person in my entire life. And then one day in therapy, my therapist was like, well, like, we were like, discussing these problems that I had with like, my ex husband or whatever. And then one day, she, I just was like, I've always wanted to be a stand up comedian. She was like, that's so weird. I've like never heard you say anything like that. You've never even said anything close to ever wanting to perform. I just said it out loud. Yeah, I was like, just like, oh, like, that's so weird. I've never heard any like, literally, but in the back of my head. I've been thinking about it for my entire life. Like I just heard myself. And so I said out loud, and literally that next day, I signed up for like, open mics, and I just started doing them every day. And it was like, yeah, it's not crazy. Jenn Welch 11:21 I love it. I know, right? It's like so scary to say that first thing I didn't tell anybody about the wanting to be a stand up thing until it was in 2004. When I told a friend while we were drunk at the Toronto Film Festival, I was working for a film studio at the time. And some friends of my husband, who are I mean, they weren't close friends, but he was acquaintances with the Lonely Island guys, Andy Samberg, and your Matt taccone. And the other guy. So they had just gotten hired on SNL. And I was so jealous and I didn't even want to be in SNL. I don't want to be on SNL, but I wanted to be doing comedy. And I just remember like drunkenly telling a co worker that I wanted to do stand up, and I was like, mortified that I even said anything. Words, you know, it was like, Oh, um, but I Yeah, and I think that there is something to be said about. I mean, at least in my experience, like, just because I got a late start, and because I know I want it so bad, because here's the thing like you. I mean, I'll speak for myself, but I think that you'll relate to this, like, we've had the experience in our adult life of not doing comedy. So no matter how bad comedy gets, it's never as bad as not doing comedy. Yes. I also, yeah. Youngmi Mayer 12:55 spend the rest of my life doing open mics and get hooked on, like getting booked on a bar show. That's so exciting for me to. Like, I never even thought that I was allowed to do what I wanted to do, you know, like, to go to the back of a bar and someone's do stand up in front of three people. That's amazing. Jenn Welch 13:17 And then those three people are gonna laugh at what I'm saying. And even if they don't laugh at what I'm saying, it's like, I it's like, Okay, well, that's still not worse than the worst, you know. Exactly. Yeah. I sometimes, like I just remember, like, maybe being around where you're at, in terms of like years having done comedy, and just walking around New York City and being like, in my head, like, I'm a comedian in New York City. I'm a comedian in New York City. And it's like, a lot of comedians are like, Oh, I suck. Oh, everything sucks. And I'm like, every day is a miracle. Like, every day that I am able to do this. It's like a miracle. Youngmi Mayer 13:58 That's how I feel. I'm like, this is I'm so grateful. I have that kind of moment. The summer before quarantine, so I can two summers ago now. Where I was booked on the show at the UCB Hell's Kitchen like that big theater. Yeah. And it was summer, right? It was like June. And I was like wearing like a sun dress or something. And I was walking there. And I was like, kind of late. So I was like, get out of my way. I'm a comedian. And I was in that moment. I was like, Oh my God, look at me like I'm wearing a sun dress. I'm walking through like New York, Manhattan in the summer. And I'm going to this big theater where I'm going to perform. That was my one little moment I had. It's all downhill from there, Unknown 14:41 baby. Jenn Welch 14:43 Love it. I love it. Oh, it's so good. I'm so glad I've been like wanting to talk to you about this, like forever, but it's like is the conversation worth it if we're not recording it for an audience, you know, so I'm glad we're finally in. work. I leave finally. situate Youngmi Mayer 15:01 that this is the first time we've talked since your class, right? So yeah, yeah, this is great. And then after we'll hang out. Jenn Welch 15:08 Yes. We will go for walks in the city and I will get outdoors. What? What's your dog? What's up everybody? Just imagine right now that young is holding a dog. Youngmi Mayer 15:18 A little Chihuahua. long haired Chihuahua. Her name is corn. Oh, and she's just beautiful bitch. Jenn Welch 15:26 beautiful little bit. Oh my god. I love her. I love her. Yeah. Um, back to AD add. You told me you got right. What are we talking about? You told me you got diagnosed. I I swear to God every day when I wake up. It's like I'm reinventing. Like, everything like that. Like, it's not like, Oh, you wake up, you get in the shower. And then you do this. And then you do that. It's like, I wake up and the possibilities are endless. And I'm frozen. It's like, yep, yeah. Okay, so anyways, nothing for three hours. Yep. I just want to say I relate to that. But you got diagnosed. You said earlier this year? No, Unknown 16:08 yeah. Youngmi Mayer 16:09 Wait, when? Well, I had like, what happened? God, I don't remember mice. So I had, okay, so my psychiatric journey, which is, you know, like the medical part, like, I obviously don't really like no, like, medication has ever worked for me. But it started with being diagnosed, diagnosed with depression. And, um, years ago. And then. And then, like this, I guess this is like, on unprofessional sort of diagnosis. But like years and years ago, in my early 20s, I did a lot of cocaine. And yeah. And like, for me, a lot of times I would do it and then I would fall asleep. Or I would feel like, I would feel like I did this. Maybe this is wrong. Maybe I'm misunderstanding this. But I, I am assuming that it's because I have ADHD, and it was sort of acting like, maybe like what Adderall does to Yeah, add? I don't know if that's correct. But I would just have a weird reaction to cocaine, like, a lot of times, it made me feel really calm, you know? Yeah. And then a lot of times, I would do a lot of it, I will talk a lot stuff. But like, sometimes it would just feel kind of different to me, I think, than other people. That is such an educated statements. I don't even know if that's Jenn Welch 17:26 accurate. But I felt like that's how a lot of people kind of find out it like a lot of people who are diagnosed. And when I say a lot of people these numbers are this is not scientific. But I hear for me, I read from a lot of people that I anecdotally, um, I mean, I noticed in college that whenever I did Adderall, did my friend's Adderall. I could actually, like, you know, it'd be party time, but I would be like, let's talk about the term papers we're supposed to be working on. Like, that's like, Youngmi Mayer 17:58 Yeah, I would do my roommates, Adderall, and I could sit down and do stuff. And I could never, I could never, you know, yeah. So then. So that's like, something I noticed just like by myself, and then, um, I just all the Add thing, I feel like it was meant. So like, I had a really bad psychiatrist, the one that I got all the antidepressants from, like, five, five or so years ago. And like, he sort of like mentioned it, but then I was sort of like, I didn't really like him. So I never really followed through and I stopped seeing him. And then, like I and I never in my head thought it was like something that was like, detrimental to my life. Like I thought it was like, it never really bothered me, like all these issues. But then during the pandemic, it's gotten completely out of hand. Like what you were saying about the sleeping thing. I sleep in two hour like patches. Yeah, I literally can't do one thing a day. Like I literally it would kill me to like, do one. I don't even know what I do. I do nothing. Yeah, worse. And then I get really overwhelmed. And then I get a bunch of anxiety. And then I'm always late, like I, um, I have this thing where like, I'll have to be somewhere in 15 minutes and I'll leave like 14 like what was one minute and I'm like, how did I think I was gonna get there and I just, I can't get out of I can't leave on time. Like, Jenn Welch 19:30 I know what that is. Once I'm out of my apartment, I tend to be kind of okay, as long as I didn't go someplace where I can settle in, right like if I were to say like say it's the old days and like the pits still open and maybe I would go in there and like work for a few hours and then I would have to go somewhere after that. I would be late to the thing I had to go to after that because I settled in and gotten comfortable or whatever. right but like leaving the apartment is a God dang nightmare. I I, I will not do anything for days. And then in the half hour before I need to go somewhere, I will suddenly be like, oh, now's the time to do all the things. Right? And yeah, I will start like, Oh, it's time to clean the oven. And it's like, no, it's not time to clean the oven. It's time to frickin go. And it's like, if my brain, okay, you know how like a dog sometimes, like when you went on, like, say you're taking your dog on a walk, and your dog happens to find like a sweet piece of pizza on the sidewalk in this one spot, right? One day, and you have to, like, get the piece of pizza out his mouth. Because it's like, No, no, no. But whatever. Um, I found that piece of pizza. And now every time you take your dog on the walk, it has to go check out that spot. Because one time there was pizza there. Right? Like, yeah, that is what my brain is like, with, with really quick commute times. Like, if one time I got from A to B, in a very short amount of time, like everything lined up, it just worked out. I do my brain, my brain is like, that's how long it takes. It takes that tiny amount of time to Yeah, Youngmi Mayer 21:10 I do that with my son's school. Because it's like, once we got an Uber there, and it took 12 minutes. And now I'm like, Okay, now we can leave. We can leave at 818. And we'll and I'm always late every day. And I'm like, Why are Why are we here at nine What happened? I do that all the time. It's so bad. Jenn Welch 21:29 It's so bad. I just don't even understand how somebody experiences time in in a way that like is useful. For I don't Youngmi Mayer 21:38 know how to how am I supposed to know when to leave my apartment how like, I don't get that at all. Jenn Welch 21:44 There was a period, there was a period in time where I had an okay therapists, and this was when I was married. And it was a constant source of tension between my ex and I, this whole like leaving the house thing. And what they told me to do was to take so I had colored index cards so that I wouldn't lose them on my desk with all of my piles of paper, right? Yeah. And when I had to leave somewhere, I would take a colored index card at the like, top of it, I would write the time that I need to leave, right. And then from there, I would write everything that I knew I need to do before I leave like shower, dry hair, eat food. And I would like right out how much time each of those things take and then subtract that from the time that I need to leave. And then that's how much time I needed to start. Like that's so it's like I had to have so stressful. I know, right? Because it's like, Okay, so in my head, it's like, oh, so I need to leave at 330 that means I don't need to even think about the thing that I'm going to until 330, right. Which means I can be in my pajamas, I can be sitting here like, you know, filthy, I can be like whatever and then 330 hits and now it's time to leave. So now I think about it. When really I needed to like start getting ready at 230 because I need to shower and all of that stuff. Yeah, that never somehow makes it into the equation. That's my issue too. Youngmi Mayer 23:13 My big my big thing is eating food. I can just like, I'm like, well, and then I'm gonna have to leave here at two because it's at 215. And then it's like 150 and I'm like, I haven't eaten I'm starving. I need to eat I need to make myself. And then I look at the clock like 230 I'm like oh no, that's never calculate the food time. Jenn Welch 23:38 I never calculate the food time. I never get like I am sitting here next to my bed. I have just a case of brownie bites that I got yesterday. And this is all I've eaten between yesterday and today because they're here because they're here and I can reach them and I'm hungry and I have half a brownie bite. And I'm like, this is not this is not healthy eating. Right. This is not good and sustainable. And then I'm like why do I sleep weird? Unknown 24:07 Yeah. Youngmi Mayer 24:10 I wish I had the answers. And so then the diagnosis, the diagnosis thing is interesting, because so I was like, so five years ago or something, it was like put on the table that I've add and I was like, I don't want to I don't want to think about this. It's not really detrimental to me, right. And then during quarantine, it got to the point where I'm now like, I'm always late for everything. I can't, I can't do anything. I'm just like, in the state of like, confusion and absolute utter chaos at all times. Like every time I have a work call like this thing I've remembered I'm pretty good at writing it down on my calendar now. But like I have so many times I'll just be like, somebody will be like, hey, what Where are you? Why aren't you on the zoom call and I'll be like, like in the middle of the street or something. I'm like joining like that. Just always happens to me. So I was like, sounds like Okay, so now it's getting to this point where it's just like, it's not manageable. So I, so I signed up for, because I was like, kind of broke. And this actually didn't save me money, but like a, like an online like an app where you call a psychiatrist. And it's kind of bogus. I think it's just for people who are addicted to Adderall, who like taking recreational, that's the vibe. It's kind of like a BS, like, get some Adderall. And so I called them and I was like, you know, I've had issues with this. And like, I now at this point, my life is just like, not manageable. And then the doctor was like, asking me all these questions, because I have all these other things that are like, not don't really align with ADD. And she was like, she was like, I, I hear you have, you definitely probably have ADD, but also, I'm hearing a lot of stuff that I think you might have bipolar, too. And she was like, you need to really just go see an actual psychiatrist, because I can't just prescribe you Adderall. Because a lot of times that like, increases your chances of becoming suicidal. If you're not diagnosed Korea, like correctly, and she was like, you know, like, she was like, I think you should do that. So then I was like, Okay, and so that's where I am in my diagnosis, like journey. Yeah. Um, so. Yeah, so like, that is like my official story. Jenn Welch 26:30 But it's a good one. Yeah. So did you end up going to see, like in person, psychiatrist, no, but Youngmi Mayer 26:37 I'm like, I should, like, it's Jenn Welch 26:40 literally the, it's the fucking hardest part of managing all of this is that you need to make appointments with people and, you know, whatever, and have initiative to actually, like, take care of it. Youngmi Mayer 26:54 Yeah, but also, a big part of the reason why I'm not doing it is because I do not want to get on medication. Like I don't actually want to be on Adderall. Which is, like, I have taken it like in the past recreationally. And I felt like great, like, I can get things done, but like, also, it felt bad too. And I you know, I don't know. Yeah, mentally, it's not something that I kind of want for myself. So that's like a big part of why I'm like, Well, what am I gonna do? They're gonna just prescribe me medication that I'm not going to want to take anyway. So Jenn Welch 27:24 yeah, no, I know, it's so hard. And there is like a propensity, who I said, propensity, there is a propensity for, like, doctors to just kind of like throw some medication at you and not really address any of the like, you know, behavioral things or things like that to kind of I feel like ADHD, Twitter has, like, given me so many tools. Just like, I follow a bunch of like, ADHD related accounts on Twitter that just, like, throw great information out during the day, and I'm like, oh, duh. Okay, that makes sense. And that's like, where I get my it's almost like it's almost like coaching in a way. You know, to me, it's almost like yeah, having like that. Youngmi Mayer 28:13 I get a lot of information from Tick Tock serious, like all these doctors and stuff on Tick tock, and I'm like, Okay. Jenn Welch 28:23 Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Um, I like certain things. I like, do you know about rejection sensitivity dysphoria? Youngmi Mayer 28:33 No, tell me Oh, that's like a big thing with people with ADHD. We're incredibly sensitive to like any sort of perceived rejection. Like where it's like, physically painful at times. And, and it can even just be something like a facial expression or something like that. We're like, Oh, God, or you know, like, and that is something that like a lot of people with ADHD deal with and don't realize that it's like, actually a thing and not just that. Yeah. And I have that really bad. Jenn Welch 29:09 Yeah. Unknown 29:12 Dating is a nightmare. Oh, my God, I Youngmi Mayer 29:15 go absolutely ballistic. Not not in that. Like, I just like, like ghosts so hard. If there's any sense of that. I'm just like, whoa, I'm never gonna talk to that person again. No. Yeah, nightmare. Jenn Welch 29:27 Yeah, that's it. Um, yeah. And but it's like, it makes sense when you kind of like get when you look at this sort of, like, why have it like, well, I don't know if this is okay. Again, I might just be making up like connections here but like basically like kids with undiagnosed ADHD. Like, get, like if a normal kid gets like, corrected or like reprimanded, like maybe like 10 times a day like a kid with like, undiagnosed ADHD gets like corrected or reprimanded. Like something like 250 times a day. So we're just like exposed to so much more like of that energy. So we're really sensitive to it. And also we don't understand why we're getting like corrected or like, whatever, because it's like, whatever we're doing makes sense to us. So that is that's like part of that's, that's part of it. Youngmi Mayer 30:23 When were you diagnosed with ADHD as a kid? No, Jenn Welch 30:27 I took Well, I took a self test in a Parade Magazine, like a paper when I was 16. And I was like, Mom, I marked like, I hit every point, except for hyperactivity, which I say that but I also like tap danced four nights a week and was on the cheerleading squad and like, you know what I mean, like, so maybe I just wasn't hyperactive because I was in so many, like, physical, you know, extracurriculars. But, um, but I basically like, you know, everything. And my mom was like, oh, everybody feels that way. Which because my mom probably has undiagnosed ADHD, that's how she sees things. Um, so it never got addressed. I went to college was a fucking nightmare. I ended up like, getting in. Basically, I was 28, I had stopped working. So I worked for a film studio for a while out in LA, I was late to work every single day, I was like, I was just like, hanging on by a thread the entire time I was there. And then I got a job freelancing for one of our vendors, like, working from home. And I suddenly realized I still wasn't getting anything done. Even though all the people at work, who I could blame on me not getting anything done, or some, like they were no longer in the equation, and I'm still not getting anything done. And that's when I was like, you know, kind of similar to like you with the pandemic, where suddenly you don't have like, any sort of like routine or anything. And you're like, Oh, this is me, and it's not good. Um, yeah, that's when I went to a psychiatrist out in LA. And so I was 28 when she diagnosed me, and she was like, You are textbook? And I was like, Oh, great. Um, yeah. And so it's been a real game changer. Getting that diagnosis. But again, it was like, mostly at that point, it was like, Okay, well, here are some medication, and I'll see you once a month, and like, you know, whatever. But I still had to deal with all of the things. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Youngmi Mayer 32:42 And then, and then you started doing therapy shortly after that, or? Jenn Welch 32:46 Well, I moved to New York, in 2010, with my ex. And when I got out here, I went and met with a psychiatrist about getting my medication handled. And he met me. And he was like, I think you need to come in here weekly. And I was like, Okay, and so I started going in weekly, and he was amazing. And that's, I he was my therapist for like, seven years. Wow. until he retired, and then I went into trauma therapy, and then I have been in weekly therapy now for like, 11 years. Hmm. Yeah. Youngmi Mayer 33:27 It's the best. Yeah, I agree. Unknown 33:30 Yeah. Youngmi Mayer 33:31 Wow, what a journey. And here we are. I really, you know, honestly, I feel like there's like, I mean, definitely, I don't think there's anything wrong with me or you. And I want to move away from that kind of language. But it's a different way that our brains be working. Jenn Welch 33:53 It's, it's a very different way. It's a very different way. And I commend you for, for being I want to, so I'm going to be 41 soon, and I really want, I wanted to have kids, I didn't think I would ride out my late 30s and early 40s in a pandemic, but here we are. Both, but like, I have a friend who like just have like some embryos implanted and I'm like, maybe I could do that, you know, and she's like, She's like, I have an extra vial of my daughter's firm. So we could have like, siblings, and I'm like, Oh, that's hilarious. That would be so funny. But um, Unknown 34:31 didn't to day, Jenn Welch 34:32 I think about how I think about my daily routine. And I'm like, how would I do this? And so I just want to say I commend you for like, getting it done. Like, no matter how you get it done, like, it's incredible. It's crazy. I'm Youngmi Mayer 34:48 like, I don't watch who let me be a parent. I mean, obviously, I love my son. I feel like I'm a good mom and that way like I have, you know, like Want to love for him? And you know what I'm just like, I can't the brush, like I can't brush his teeth all the time, like, but then you hear a lot of moms and moms and dads or parents who just don't even have ADHD. And they're like, I don't want to brush his teeth every day. You know what I mean? Like, yeah, he's easy on yourself, I think. Jenn Welch 35:22 Yeah, well, that's the thing. It's like, nobody's perfect. And everybody has their own shit that they're struggling with. And it's like, Yeah, I don't know. I think that like, one thing that I kind of. I think that I don't know where I'm going with this. I have like 14 thoughts. On the one hand growing up in a house where I think one of my parents had undiagnosed ADHD, I think that I've hung like, I definitely have. I think I'm very open to like, exploring new options when it comes to like ways of living, if that makes any sense. where it's like, maybe, maybe I like my current place. I don't like curtains because for like, various reasons. So I got chalk markers. And I drew awesome designs on my windows, like, you know, like, and that's like, the sort of thing that happens when you grow up in a house where not everything's perfect all the time is suddenly become a person who at 40 years old thinks it's cool to draw on your window. Like you live in a convenience store. Youngmi Mayer 36:39 I mean, I do stuff like that all the time. Do you have these? Like, obviously this like, add thing? Do you have these like little projects where you buy everything for it, and then it just like sits and I have, I decided I was gonna become a stick and poke tattoo artist. So I bought so many tattooed needles, all the ink, and then I started doing them on my legs for practice. So like, all the areas above, my knees have covered and little stick and poke tattoos. And then I forgot, it's just like collecting dust, but I was really into it for a month. And then I have a rug making kit that I was gonna make rugs and sell rugs that's like in the corner. So it sounds like one of those things. Jenn Welch 37:15 Oh, absolutely. Well, and that's the thing too. Like, once somebody pointed out on ADHD Twitter, that I'm basically ADHD is like we start the day with a dopamine deficit. And then we spend the rest of our day hunting for dopamine. And we don't really want to do anything unless it gives us dopamine. And yeah, so it's like, we find these new hobbies. And we're like, oh, this is the thing that gives me dopamine. And you we do a gazillion stick and poke tattoos on our leg. And then suddenly, it reaches the point where like, it becomes a little ho hum routine, and it doesn't give us dopamine anymore. And then it's like, we will never do it again. Youngmi Mayer 38:00 So one of the things I've like the psychiatrists was like, really concerned about was because I have like a very promiscuous dating life. Like, I don't know if that's the right word. promiscuous sounds like so like 19 1920 is like, I'm showing my ankles. Like, like, I have a very, like, maybe like, I like engage in like, high risk behavior, like sexually, right? And I always like see it like, I think, I don't know enough about bipolar to like, know what that even means. But like, I always see like, Oh, of course, I want to, like go on this date with this guy and have sex with him. Like, I, that gives me so much like dopamine. It's so exciting. But yeah, Jenn Welch 38:43 I don't know. I feel like dating is one of the hardest things with this. Because on the one hand, it's like, yes, immediate gratification. like yeah, I mean, haunt, like, whatever, which means I'm not always making the best choices for myself, like emotionally because I'm just like, ah, but then on the other hand, like, that's like the one hand of it. And then on the other hand of it, I'm so aware of all of the ways that I'm like, kind of a letdown as a lady that I ended up being way too, like lenient in terms of my standards with a dude where like, I'm like, Oh, you live in an ashtray? It's okay, my apartments kinda messy, you know, and it's like, oh Youngmi Mayer 39:26 my god, I'm like that too much. I should not be on a date with this person. No. Jenn Welch 39:36 Yeah, so it's like the whole dating with ADHD thing is hard. This episode of TickyOff is a true first for humankind. Unlike the moon landings and ventriloquism however, this is real. It's the first transatlantic episode. That's right. The TickyOff Two thumb their noses at many vast bodies of water, none more so than the Atlantic. They fling their mouthsounds from these foul green shores of Albion across that pathetic puddle of an ‘ocean' and in return, from Gotham City aka NYC, they hear the mouthsounds of Youngmi Mayer, comedian and Mission Chinese Food co-owner. Youngmi brings her usual searing honesty to her life in lockdown, dating online, swearing in front of her son, what it means to be ‘chaotically single', shutting down the Mission restaurants in San Francisco and New York, and why Beach House are the true sound of dating hookups in 2020. Before Youngmi arrives Sam looks nice, calls James a turtle and cooked a dish by a disgraced chef. James meanwhile reads a grim recipe by Barbara Cartland and was insulted in the street. All this plus TickyOff takes another one of it's patented controversial issue stances, this week they are very anti a certain war criminal. And they all agree that lockdown would be very easy indeed if you got to do it with Tom Hardy. This episode was a damn joy to record and it will be a damn joy for your ears so wake up and tip it in ‘em.
