Guests: Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, one of the first women to become a rabbi in Jewish history, is a pioneer Jewish feminist, human rights activist, writer, visual artist, ceremonialist, community educator and master storyteller. Lynn has been a congregational rabbi since the fall of 1973, and founded the Congregation Nahalat Shalom in Albuquerque, NM, in 1980. She engages in multifaith, intergenerational and multicultural organizing in solidarity with racial, indigenous, gender justice and Palestinian liberation struggles. Currently, Lynn sits on the Rabbinic Council of Jewish Voice for Peace and is board chair of Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity. Rabbi Lynn is the author of several books, including Peace Primer II, She Who Dwells Within: A Feminist Vision of Renewed Judaism, World Beyond Borders Passover Haggadah and Trail Guide to the Torah of Nonviolence. Rabbi Lynn is a Shomeret Shalom, a practitioner of the Torah of nonviolence. Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, founder of Ligmincha International, is a rare master of the Bön Dzogchen tradition in the West. After completing an 11-year course at Menri Monastery in India, where he earned his Geshe degree, he established Ligmincha in 1992 to preserve and introduce Tibetan Bön Buddhist teachings to the West. Fluent in English, Rinpoche is beloved for his clear, insightful teaching style that makes Tibetan practices accessible. He's highly respected across the U.S., Mexico, Europe, and Asia, with centers in the Americas, Europe, and India. Author of 10 books, including "Wonders of the Natural Mind" and "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep," Rinpoche shares the profound wisdom of Bön Dzogchen. Rev. Deborah Lee, Executive Director of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity since 2018, brings over 30 years of experience in faith-based social justice. Pir Zia Inayat Khan, Ph.D., is a scholar of religion and teacher of Sufism in the universalist Sufi lineage of his grandfather, Hazrat Inayat Khan. Proclaiming who you love may it be someone specific that you're revealing or gender in general, I am proud of you! For those of you who are not coming out today, I am also proud of you. Making a decision for yourself to stay closeted is also a huge decision to make. We might not know your reasons for it, but I chose to believe that you have very valid ones. I want to make sure that you know that there is space for you in this world to operate and be as unseen or low-key as you would like to be. When so many people today are waving the pride flag bright and high in the sky, there can be a lot of pressure to come out of the closet before you're actually ready. Not giving in to peer pressure, or the influence of society to do that is commendable and equally as courageous. I hope you know this too. Knowing who you are inside, even if only to yourself, is also a really great gift to yourself. While today is Friday and we usually have a First Kiss Friday story for you, it's also NCOD. I felt it special to share someones coming out story with you all today! That is where my dear friend Whitney Easton comes into light. Whitney and I are very close friends. We talk just about every day of the week. She is one of the people in my life that I can call in tears, or full of laughs - she holds space for each for me. Having friends that offer this in the relationship is invaluable, I encourage you all to find that. Whitney is a Los Angeles based writer. She founded Wisdom With Whit, her freelance writing business where she writes about life, wellness, wholeness, and now, coming out of the closet in her 30s. One thing that brought Whitney and me together the most I would have to say is that we are both LGBTQ Christians. What's that mean? Well, it's straightforward. We both identify as LGBTQ, and we are both Christians. Here's the thing, though; when she and I met, she wasn't out at the time. I just knew that I had a friend who was a Christian and accepted me just as I was. Gay as ever... and I love God. I hadn't had any idea that this relationship I was benefiting from was also providing support for Whitney. I had merely been being myself, my vulnerable, authentic self. Isn't it amazing what is being woven together as we allow ourselves to be seen by others? Something takes place without us controlling the ship. The waves of life just do their thing. As I said, Whitney is a writer, and recently came out to a few friends of hers (myself obvi included). She hadn't officially posted anything online or made any public statement about it until yesterday. That's when her article "I'm an LGBTQ Christian and I'm Ready to Start Talking" was released on the popular website "Medium." A subsidiary of Medium, "Our Human Family," commissioned her to write the piece. And my God, did she do the damn thing! This article is amazing! She speaks about her frustrations around the intersection of homosexuality and Christianity (something that often comes up on our show). What really moved me was where Whitney end's on her current relationship with God. I’m here with my family and friends…at place we consider to be the happiest place on earth. This is Key West. Why this is our happy place is the focus of this episode, and before you get the wrong idea: this show wasn’t sponsored by the Key West Travel Bureau…I understand that many of you have your own personal paradise’s…but this is mine. I’ve only been here once before, about a year ago, in March of 2012, for only three days. Long time listeners to Phedippidations might remember episode 287 titled “Hemingway’s Key and Life to its Top”.  We’ll I’m back again, and this time we’re spending a full week.Key West is 129 miles southwest of Miami, and 94 statute miles north of Cuba.  The city is smaller than New York’s Central Park and it’s official motto is “One Human Family”. Mile marker zero of US route 1 is located at 490 Whitehead Street, here in Key West, Florida. It’s the beginning of the road for this major east coast US Highway which runs 2,369 miles (or 3,813 km) all the way north to Fort Kent, Maine…the take out point for those of us who have canoed the Allagash River Waterway in the Northern Maine Woods. Fort Kent was the end of the road for a family camping trip I once cherished; with my Dad, and Nephew John Glenn…you’re welcome to listen to Fdip198 recorded in the summer of 2009 titled “Walking by Henry David Thoreau”…but for me, that’s all in the past.  The World has Moved on…and there’s nothing there I care to listen to or dwell upon. Here in Key West I’m marking a new beginning.   That so much of my life could changed in the years since I last strapped my canoe to the roof of my Jeep four years ago would have seemed hard to believe back then.  But here we are, a few thousand days and miles ago and away: where I’m standing at mile zero of route 1, ready to make a new start, at the beginning of the road…where my Life 2.0 began.
