On July 22, 2023 Chris Pedersen gave a 2 hour online presentation to the Orange County Chapter of the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII).  The title was “Best In Class Fund Selection and Behavior.”  Over 650 people attended the presentation, a record turnout for our presentations.  The video will be available in the coming weeks.  While  Chris answered  many questions during his presentation, there were over 60 questions remaining unanswered.  In this podcast and several to follow Chris and Paul will try to answer all of the questions.  Here are the answers to the first 16 questions: Should investors limit their bond holdings to short term bond funds? Are CDs a good place to park cash right now? Do you think investing in an internationally diversified index fund is a good way to manage currency risk? My wife and I are 70 with our portfolio 75% in cash.  Is now a good time to invest and should we put it all in now or dollar cost average?  Chris mentions a podcast on dollar cost averaging vs lump sum investing by Rob Berger. Dimensional Small Cap Value Fund appears to have less than a 2% return over the last 16 years.  Could that be true? For retired investors wouldn't it be prudent to apply a market timing system that will protect against a big selloff? How does your Ultimate Buy and Hold Portfolio compare to your other portfolios in terms of risk and return?  Paul mentions Table H1 at this link. Would an investor be better served in a target date fund or managing a simple 3 Fund Bogleheads portfolio?  Paul mentions H1 here as well. Why not put your bond holdings into a diversified stock fund that pays dividends, like the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD)? What is average maturity of the short-term bond funds you recommend? If I don't have small cap value available in my 401k, should I substitute a small cap blend fund in my 2 Funds For Life portfolio? How does Portfolio Visualizer work on target date funds? Your charts show the possibility of an 81% decline.  Does that mean the fund could see the value fall from $100,000 to $19,000? Please explain the term investment factor. Instead of comparing different market factors, how would you compare the returns of different market sectors? Would you consider producing a factor regression video/course so do it yourself investors could learn to evaluate funds for themselves?

** Suicide Awareness Month is September every year and to kick off this month I have a wonderful special guest named Shelley Pavlis. I was a guest on her podcast last September and I am so glad we got to talk about her journey. At 13 minute mark we do talk about Suicide. BIO: Shelley Pavlis is the current Co-chair and Project 2025 Champion of the Orange County Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As Project 2025 Champion her role align with AFSP's goal nationwide to reduce the number of suicides by 20 by the year 2025. She also created and hosts a suicide awareness and prevention podcast called Hope Out of the Darkness. Like many of you, she has been affected by suicide in many ways. She had a beloved Aunt and an Uncle die by suicide, and her family never discussed how they died until recently, bringing home the stigma of talking about mental illness and suicide. Several other close family members suffer from severe depression, or anxiety and have lived experience or suicidal ideation as well. And the ultimate catalyst for her seeking out AFSP-OC for resources and to volunteer was when her son's friend died by suicide at 17 years old. She knew then she had to educate herself and learn the warning signs and how to help other loss survivors. Shell is a trained presenter for many suicide prevention education programs and is mental health first aid certified.  Her links:  https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell End of Show Notes: Please email jared.diehl@gmail.com if you would like to be a guest on the podcast. I am the UNRIVALED REALIZER. I am known for humanizing the fastest path to inviting in and receiving 2-3X more money because I stand for UNAPOLOGETIC PROSPERITY. What I want for myself I want for everyone! My clients expand their prosperity, generosity, and legacy...WITHOUT more bandwidth, working longer/harder, or inconsistent results. After 20 years in the “corporate cubicle” side of the financial services industry, I had a crisis of legacy and could no longer see my impact on the world. I wanted proximity with clients. I wanted to make a bigger, bolder difference in my life and the lives of others. After 8 years on the client-facing side, I realized, that no matter their income level, the biggest money challenge people face is being unaware of how to keep, give and grow more so they can be, do and have more. In 2018, I founded Unrivaled Realizations LLC and created my signature group coaching program, Money Realities & Realizations. Through my discovery of the 7 Money Realities, I created a powerfully practical method for attracting and realizing more money. In 2019 I innovated a quick results program to add $9K+ to your bank account in 30 days or sooner. In 2020 I added 90-minute Money Acceleration Sessions to quickly identify the top 3 ways to add $3K+ to your life, and in 2021, introduced The 10K Day. Meet Susan Glusica. Her bio: I am the UNRIVALED REALIZER. I am known for humanizing the fastest path to inviting in and receiving more money because I am a stand for UNAPOLOGETIC PROSPERITY. What I want for myself I want for everyone! My clients expand their prosperity, generosity and legacy…WITHOUT more bandwidth, working longer/harder, or inconsistent results. After 20 years in the “corporate cubicle” side of the financial services industry, I had a crisis of legacy and could no longer see my impact in the world. I wanted proximity with clients. I wanted to make a bigger, bolder difference in my life and the lives of others. After 8 years on the client-facing side, I realized, no matter their income level, the biggest money challenge people face is being unaware how to keep, give and grow more so they can be, do and have more. In 2018, I founded Unrivaled Realizations LLC and created my signature group coaching program, Money Realities & Realizations. Through my discovery of the 7 Money Realities, I created a powerfully practical method for attracting and realizing more money. In 2019 I innovated a quick results program to add $8K+ to your bank account in 30 days or sooner. In 2020 I added 90-minute Money Innovation Sessions to quickly identify top 3 ways to add $3K+ to your life. Kim has always had a close relationship to earth. She started gardening with her father when she was old enough to drop corn seeds into the trough as he hoed. She and her husband have vegetable gardens, flower gardens and 8 chickens. Aware of climate change since before she can remember, she thought the government would need to take care of the problem. Immediately after the 2016 national election, she realized that the US government wouldn’t be taking any action at all. She decided that she personally must do everything she could to limit the climate crisis. So Kim retired her business as an independent jewelry appraiser last year. She is a homemaker, turned jewelry appraiser, turned climate activist. She trained with Al Gore twice, the first time in October, 2017. Then recently in August in Minneapolis. Her mission is to work with others to limit the climate crisis. Kim is honored to serve on the Orange County Commission for the Environment and the Orange County Planning Board. In today's show, we read Luke 21:25-36 and discuss the climate crisis and what we can do about it.    This is not a prediction of the end time, because the end time is simply the time we see the signs and take action. We reinterpret "the end time." The end time is now, but not in the sense of the end of the world. Instead, it is a new beginning.  Like the seasons, we should know the times we are in, yet we don't.  "In other words, seeing is more important than timing."  Join us for commentary on Luke and a panel discussion with Dennis Arp of the Citizens Climate Lobby, Orange County Chapter, Professor David Westfall, and my father, the Reverend Carl Procida. This prophetic show recorded in November of 2015 is just as relevant today as when it was first recorded. The lessons still apply today only with more urgency. It has been edited for easier listening.

She's moved from patient to activist to educator on her journey and currently leads the Orange County Chapter of Women Grow and produces cannabis infused Moonlight Movable Feasts through her High Dining brand. Barbie also founded Fairie Jane, a cannabis lifestyle brand, celebrating cannabis awareness and activism through the art of adornment.   In this episode, Barbie helps the uninitiated understand a bit about hemp and marijuana, the differences between the two and the biological reasons it's helping so many people with or without ailments. She also shares a bit about some of the products she promotes and the jewel-like blown-glass pieces she offers as an homage to the underground glass makers - the full story on that is in a film called Degenerate Art.

In today's show we read Luke 21:25-36 and discuss the climate crisis and what we can do about it.
