Matt Crawford speaks with author Patricia Walsh Chadwick about her book, Breaking Glass: Tales from the Witch of Wall Street. Patricia grew up in a religious community-turned-cult in the Boston area. At the age of seventeen, she was forced out of her home, leaving behind her entire family, and without access to higher education. From her first job as a receptionist at a brokerage firm, she clawed her way up the ladder—rung by rung—in that bastion of male chauvinism: Wall Street. By going to college at night, she achieved her degree in economics from Boston University, and from there, she headed to New York City. With a drive that earned her the moniker “Witch of Wall Street,” she rose from the ranks of research analyst to portfolio manager, where she was responsible for billions of dollars in pension and endowment assets. A turning point in her life was giving birth to twins at the age of forty-five, and she continued forward in her career, becoming a global partner at Invesco. At the turn of the millennium, she left Wall Street behind and embarked on a second career as a corporate board director.

This month, we revisited the inspiring journey of Patricia Walsh, a Paralympic gold medalist and accomplished tech engineer who has overcome significant challenges and achieved remarkable success. Patricia's story is a testament to the power of resilience, focus, and determination. Here are the key leadership takeaways from my conversation with Patricia, optimized to help you build natural leadership strengths. Embracing Challenges to Foster Resilience Patricia faced the profound challenge of becoming blind at the age of 14. Instead of letting her disability define her, she embraced it as part of her identity and pushed herself to achieve what many thought was impossible. This relentless pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of her journey. Key Takeaway: Striving for excellence means embracing challenges and using them as stepping stones to reach your full potential. This mindset is crucial for anyone looking to build natural leadership strengths. Overcoming Adversity & Power Beyond Limiting Beliefs Patricia's journey is filled with instances of overcoming adversity. From completing over 20 marathons and two Ironman competitions to transitioning from a role at Facebook to a senior engineering manager position at the Lego Group, Patricia has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible. Key Takeaway: Overcoming adversity requires resilience, determination, and the courage to push beyond limiting beliefs. These qualities are essential for developing natural leadership strengths. Building Natural Leadership Strengths in Tech and Beyond Patricia has held significant roles in the tech industry, including her recent position at the Lego Group, where she oversaw several departments. Her leadership extends beyond managing teams; it involves creating an inclusive and supportive environment that values everyone's contributions. Key Takeaway: Effective leadership is more than just overseeing tasks; it's about fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their best. This approach is vital to build natural leadership strengths in any setting. Achieving the Impossible Patricia's sports and professional achievements highlight her ability to achieve what many thought was impossible. She holds the world record in the Ironman Triathlon and has represented Team USA as a five-time national champion and seven-time international gold medalist. Key Takeaway: Setting and achieving ambitious goals can inspire others and demonstrate that determination can make the impossible possible. This ambition is a core component of natural leadership strengths. Focusing on Leadership Strengths and Talents A significant piece of advice Patricia shares, which resonates with my coaching philosophy, is to: "focus on your strengths and talents rather than weaknesses or handicaps." This mindset has been pivotal in Patricia's success both in her athletic and professional endeavors. Key Takeaway: To have the best life and career possible, focus on leveraging your strengths and talents instead of dwelling on your limitations. This focus is fundamental to build natural leadership strengths. The Importance of Asking for and Offering Help Patricia shared insights about the importance of knowing when to ask for help and not making assumptions about others' needs. She emphasized the value of clear communication and respecting personal autonomy, which is crucial in personal and professional interactions. Sabrina's Insight: "Effective support involves asking how to help and respecting the autonomy and preferences of others." This understanding is essential for anyone aiming to build natural leadership strengths. Authenticity in Leadership Values Being authentic to oneself is another critical lesson from Patricia's journey. Despite the competitive environments she has been part of, Patricia remains committed to her values of fairness and kindness. Key Takeaway: Authentic leadership involves staying true to yo...

Women's Leadership, Women's Career Development, Business Executive Coaching & Podcast by Sabrina Braham MA PPC

Patricia Walsh's journey in overcoming limiting beliefs is a remarkable tale of overcoming adversity and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Born with a gradually worsening vision impairment, she faced significant challenges from a young age. Despite these hurdles, Patricia refused to let her disability define her. Instead, she embraced it as a unique aspect of her identity, pushing herself to achieve what many consider impossible. Patricia's leadership tips are a great story of grit, personal accountability, granite willpower, and a determination to conquer overwhelming odds. Walsh's achievements at 33 are more extraordinary than most people could expect in a lifetime: A successful career as a software engineer at Microsoft Entrepreneur & Author of Blind Ambition Professional speaker and Champion Athlete. She represented the United States in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.   Overcoming limiting beliefs is critical to achieving success and realizing one's full potential. Patricia Walsh's inspiring journey offers valuable insights into how to break free from these constraints and achieve greatness. Here are the key lessons and takeaways from her story.   Perseverance and Adaptability    - Incremental Progress:       Patricia highlights that significant transformations don't happen overnight. Embracing incremental progress helps one stay motivated and focused. Small, consistent efforts compound over time to achieve substantial results.    - Adaptation to Challenges:      Patricia's journey demonstrates the importance of adapting to new challenges. Whether she learned alternative strategies due to her vision impairment or found new ways to train as an athlete, adaptability is crucial for overcoming limiting beliefs and obstacles. Strategic Thinking and Planning    - Visionary Goal Setting:      - By envisioning an ideal outcome and then reverse-engineering the steps needed to achieve it, Patricia encourages a proactive approach to goal setting. This method allows for identifying the most effective path and resources required rather than constrained by limitations.    - Resourcefulness:    - Patricia's example of securing sponsorship for the best racing bike illustrates the importance of resourcefulness. Rather than settling for what's immediately affordable, she found a way to obtain the optimal solution, demonstrating that creativity and determination can overcome financial constraints and limiting beliefs. Focused Efforts    -  Running the Root Line:  The concept of “running the root line” underscores the importance of focusing on tasks that directly contribute to goal achievement. Efficiency and productivity are maximized by avoiding unnecessary efforts and concentrating on what truly matters. Prioritization: Patricia's approach emphasizes the need for prioritization. Identifying and focusing on high-impact activities ensures that energy and resources are directed toward achieving the primary objective rather than being diluted by less relevant tasks. Community and Support - The Secret to Leadership Success    - Building a Support Network:      - Patricia's success is partly attributed to her building a supportive network. Whether seeking advice, securing sponsorship, or finding training partners, having a community that believes in and supports your vision is invaluable in overcoming limiting beliefs. This is where a leadership mastermind group can be invaluable.   - Leadership Mentorship and Guidance:      - Patricia's openness to mentorship and guidance has been a key factor in her journey. Learning from others' experiences and seeking advice can provide new perspectives and solutions that may not have been considered otherwise. Having peers, trusted advisors or a coach, especially when developing your soft leadership skills, is essential to help you notice your “blind spots and blocks and overcoming limiting beliefs” that may be holding you back,

Estoy aturdido. Me quisiste, te quise. Rodolfo Walsh. Tonight, my special guests are Liza Rodman and Jennifer Jordan, who recount the shocking true story of time spent with a young man who was privately taking delight in dismembering women in the 1960s. Get her book The Babysitter on Amazon.Liza Rodman was a lonely little girl growing up on Cape Cod in the 1960s. During the summers, while her mother worked days in a local motel and danced most nights in the Provincetown bars, her babysitter—the kind, handsome handyman at the motel where her mother worked—took her and her sister on adventures in his truck. He bought them popsicles, and they visited his “secret garden” in the Truro woods. To Liza, he was one of the few kind, understanding, and safe adults in her life. But there was one thing she didn't know: their babysitter was a serial killer. Though Tony Costa's gruesome case made screaming headlines in 1969 and beyond, Liza never made the connection between her friendly babysitter and the infamous killer of numerous women, including four in Massachusetts, until decades later. Haunted by nightmares and horrified by what she learned, Liza became obsessed with the case. Now, she and co-writer Jennifer Jordan reveal “a suspenseful portrayal of murderous madness in tandem with a child's growing loneliness, neglect, and despair, a narrative collision that will haunt” (Sarah Weinman, author of The Real Lolita) you long after you finish it. Antone Charles Costa was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on August 2, 1944.[2] Costa started committing violent crimes at a relatively early age, when in November 1961, at age 17, he was arrested and charged with burglary and assault after breaking into a house and attacking a teenage girl. He was sentenced to three years of probation and a one-year suspended sentence for the crime.[3] In 1966, Costa picked up two women and promised to take them to Pennsylvania on his way to California. The women, Bonnie Williams and Diane Federoff, disappeared shortly after encountering Costa, and he told investigators that he had dropped them off in California. Costa was additionally thought to have murdered his girlfriend, Barbara Spaulding, in 1967 while he was living in California.[3] However, Federoff, Williams, and Spaulding were later found alive.[4] Costa was suspected of killing eight women: Diane Federoff, Bonnie Williams, Barbara Spaulding, Sydney Monson, Susan Perry, Christine Gallant, Patricia Walsh, and Mary Anne Wysocki, but convicted of killing only two: Walsh and Wysocki. Although suspected of killing Federoff, Williams, and Spaulding, those women were later found alive.[5] On February 8, 1969, while looking for the bodies of Patricia Walsh and Mary Anne Wysocki, police discovered Susan Perry. Perry had been missing since the previous Labor Day.[6] Perry's body had been cut into eight pieces. When Wysocki's body was found about a month later, her torso and head had been buried separately. Not long after, Walsh and the rest of Wysocki's body were found in a forest clearing that Costa had used for growing marijuana.[6] This "garden" of marijuana plants and the more significant case inspired the actual crime book In His Garden by Leo Damore.[6] The case gained international attention when district attorney Edmund Dinis, in comments to the media, claimed of Walsh and Wysocki, "The hearts of each girl had been removed from the bodies and were not in the graves…Each body was cut into as many parts as there are joints." Dinis also claimed that there were teeth marks found on the bodies. These claims, although untrue, produced a stream of national and international media outlets in local Provincetown, Massachusetts.[6]  Do you frequently miss episodes of Mysterious Radio? This week Alaina’s got a two parter, pretty close to home for us! Tony Costa, a hippie living around Provincetown in the 60’s, was a real shady character from the start. When he was a teenager he straight up broke into the home of a girl two years younger than him, proceeded to drag her down the stairs, and later told police he, “just wanted to talk to her!” Ok, Tony. It only gets weirder from there. Patricia Walsh and Mary Ann Wysocki head to the cape for a relaxing weekend getaway and meet Tony during their stay. Interestingly enough, they never return home and Tony is the last person to see them. At its inception, St. Benedict Center was so popular it attracted the attention of bishops, theologians and professors from area colleges. John F. Kennedy visited "the Center" more than once, most memorably in 1946, shortly after having been elected congressman from Massachusetts. However, what began as a popular, intellectual and energetic meeting place for young Catholic students at Harvard and Radcliffe, "the Center" evolved into a rigid, sequestered religious sect. It was headed by Leonard Feeney, a priest who was eventually excommunicated from the Catholic Church, and his cohort, Catherine Clarke, a staunchly married woman with a strident puritanical streak. As Patricia describes it, "Until the age of eighteen, I had never read a newspaper nor perused the pages of a magazine. I had never eaten in a restaurant, nor shopped in a grocery store. I had never bought clothes or cosmetics, or a single item that could be called my own. I had never heard of Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando or Elizabeth Taylor. I had never watched television, nor made a phone call. I did not know how to dance." Born in 1948, Mary Patricia grew up from infancy within the orbit of the Center, as the subject of a social experiment. Shortly before her fifth birthday, she was given a new name -- Anastasia, in honor of a virgin and martyr in the 4th century. She and her siblings were made to live apart from their parents, who were later pressured to forsake their marital vows, no longer living as husband and wife. A celibate existence, they were told, was more conducive to a life dedicated to God. Among its nearly one hundred members, the Center was home to thirty-nine children who were ordered to address Leonard and Catherine as "Daddy and Mamma" and the approximately 60 adults who were part of the community as "aunts" and "uncles." At the Center, Patricia’s life was defined by strict rules, regimens, and retributions. Even worse than the threat of the beatings meted out by Sister Catherine was Patricia’s terror of “the world.” At the tender age of seventeen, amidst the turbulence of the 1960s, she was exiled from the only home she had ever known. Brokenhearted and feeling deserted, Patricia tapped into her inner strength and went on to build a successful career in business and finance, marry and raise two children. After decades on Wall Street, Patricia is now the founder and president of Ravengate Partners LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to providing businesses and not-for-profit institutions with education and advice about the financial markets and the global economy. Patricia's story is one of grace -- kindness, joy, fortitude, faith, hope and humor. “If I let myself dwell on the emotional pain I experienced, I would unfairly ignore all the good that God’s grace has showered on me,” says Patricia, a self-described optimist. She believes it is the grace of gratitude that has inspired her to write this memoir. We look forward to exploring opportunities to share Patricia’s story. Patricia Walsh Chadwick's 'Little Sister' You can't imagine.  Imagine being a 6 year old girl and you and your siblings are no longer allowed to live with your parents. Now imagine not being able to call them Mom and Dad. How about not being allowed to speak to them even if they walked by you? Now imagine being cruelly punished because you spoke to a boy. Keep imagining – you are now 17 and “kicked out” of the only place you have lived. You’re thrown into a world you know nothing about. You're told its a world of sin and danger. No, you do not even know how to use a telephone. Imagine that as you are writing your story, it takes your daughter putting a word on that place you lived for those 17 years. Did you guess it? The word is CULT. You won’t find that word in Patricia’s memoir. Listen as Patricia tells her story that at times can be impossible to fathom. The story of intelligent men and women and their children, Little Sisters and Little Brothers, and the cult-like community that was led by an excommunicated Catholic priest, Leonard Feeney and a very sadistic nun, Sister Catherine. ‘My story is about family that may have been separated but couldn’t be broken.’ Patricia Walsh Chadwick did learn how to make a phone call. By working as a teacher and taking out loans, Patricia graduated summa cum laude from Boston University and started her career in finance. Ms. Chadwick is the founder and president of Ravengate Partners LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to providing businesses and non-profit institutions with education and advice about the financial markets and the global economy. Patricia lives in Greenwich, CT with her husband of more than 35 years and their two children.

I Brew My Own Coffee (http://www.ibrewmyowncoffee.com/)应该有点意思,然而奶昔羊在节目中说这俩节目不一定新手友好,还是多去咖啡馆喝、多跟咖啡师交流来得直接。 5. See Me First for My Ability from Life On the Outside the Official Garmin Podcast 1. 3. It’s no secret that women and minorities have historically been underrepresented in science and engineering and have faced a lot of bias upon entering those fields. But what is Oregon State University doing to change that? To find out, we talk to Joe McGuire, one of the College of Engineering’s associate deans, and Anne Gillies, the search advocate program director at Oregon State about how they are building an inclusive environment. To learn about the efforts to recruit and retain more students of underrepresented groups we talk to Ellen Momsen, director of the Women and Minorities in Engineering program and Kameron Kadooka, the coordinator of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program. We also hear from alumni, Patricia Walsh, Janice Levenhagen-Seeley and Justin Conner about their experiences at Oregon State. Janice describes ChickTech, the non-profit she founded to recruit and retain more girls and women in technology fields.
