How to master “natural” leadership, with Alisa Cohn Impostor syndrome is the feeling that you don't belong somewhere — such as a prestigious school or high-performing job — because of the false belief that you aren't as smart, capable, or experienced as your colleagues. Although it's very common for new CEOs and senior leaders to face self-doubt and insecurity daily in their role, these feelings can be overcome. Remember that leadership is an unnatural act. We don't normally give feedback to our friends, praise people we don't have confidence in, and repeat ourselves over and over. But these skills can be learned. This month, we revisited the inspiring journey of Patricia Walsh, a Paralympic gold medalist and accomplished tech engineer who has overcome significant challenges and achieved remarkable success. Patricia's story is a testament to the power of resilience, focus, and determination. Here are the key leadership takeaways from my conversation with Patricia, optimized to help you build natural leadership strengths. Embracing Challenges to Foster Resilience Patricia faced the profound challenge of becoming blind at the age of 14. Instead of letting her disability define her, she embraced it as part of her identity and pushed herself to achieve what many thought was impossible. This relentless pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of her journey. Key Takeaway: Striving for excellence means embracing challenges and using them as stepping stones to reach your full potential. This mindset is crucial for anyone looking to build natural leadership strengths. Overcoming Adversity & Power Beyond Limiting Beliefs Patricia's journey is filled with instances of overcoming adversity. From completing over 20 marathons and two Ironman competitions to transitioning from a role at Facebook to a senior engineering manager position at the Lego Group, Patricia has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible. Key Takeaway: Overcoming adversity requires resilience, determination, and the courage to push beyond limiting beliefs. These qualities are essential for developing natural leadership strengths. Building Natural Leadership Strengths in Tech and Beyond Patricia has held significant roles in the tech industry, including her recent position at the Lego Group, where she oversaw several departments. Her leadership extends beyond managing teams; it involves creating an inclusive and supportive environment that values everyone's contributions. Key Takeaway: Effective leadership is more than just overseeing tasks; it's about fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their best. This approach is vital to build natural leadership strengths in any setting. Achieving the Impossible Patricia's sports and professional achievements highlight her ability to achieve what many thought was impossible. She holds the world record in the Ironman Triathlon and has represented Team USA as a five-time national champion and seven-time international gold medalist. Key Takeaway: Setting and achieving ambitious goals can inspire others and demonstrate that determination can make the impossible possible. This ambition is a core component of natural leadership strengths. Focusing on Leadership Strengths and Talents A significant piece of advice Patricia shares, which resonates with my coaching philosophy, is to: "focus on your strengths and talents rather than weaknesses or handicaps." This mindset has been pivotal in Patricia's success both in her athletic and professional endeavors. Key Takeaway: To have the best life and career possible, focus on leveraging your strengths and talents instead of dwelling on your limitations. This focus is fundamental to build natural leadership strengths. The Importance of Asking for and Offering Help Patricia shared insights about the importance of knowing when to ask for help and not making assumptions about others' needs. She emphasized the value of clear communication and respecting personal autonomy, which is crucial in personal and professional interactions. Sabrina's Insight: "Effective support involves asking how to help and respecting the autonomy and preferences of others." This understanding is essential for anyone aiming to build natural leadership strengths. Authenticity in Leadership Values Being authentic to oneself is another critical lesson from Patricia's journey. Despite the competitive environments she has been part of, Patricia remains committed to her values of fairness and kindness. Key Takeaway: Authentic leadership involves staying true to yo...
Welcome to my weekly audio-book, this week we gonna be talking about How to draw out natural leadership from you and others. Have you ever thought about what it truly means to be a leader? Often, we picture leaders as those with high-ranking titles or in positions of power. But what if that leadership is really something each of us is equipped to master? Despite the ancient urban legend that only certain people have what it takes, everyone can lead. That's not just a little feel-good tidbit; it's a powerful truth that reshapes our understanding of what it means to guide the way for others. In this audio-book, you'll explore how everyday people have sparked vast waves of change, and how you can do the same. So, ready to uncover the leader within you? Let's get started!
“Sometimes I'm hesitant to show my vulnerability. As a young manager, I thought all the leaders are perfect and they don't make any mistakes and they're charismatic. But this is not true,” she said. This authenticity is particularly important in today's workplace, and especially true at MSD, because for once, there are four generations represented in the organization, from Boomers to Gen Z. Jae Yeon's advice to emerging leaders and managers? Do not mimic stereotypical leadership styles. Instead, she encourages individuals to embrace their uniqueness and listen to their hearts, allowing their authentic leadership style to emerge. Knowing oneself and leading from within is the key to success. Her career: from government agency in Korea to the Pharmaceutical industry. 2. The Human Herd: Awakening Our Natural Leadership is AboutBeth's work, and her new book, resonated with me so much, I know it's going to resonate just as much with all of you! I jumped right in and began the podcast with a few very poignant excerpts from her book.Part guidebook, part manifesto, The Human Herd offers a framework for living, relating, and leading a more empowered life. We're human animals, yet in the modern world we suppress the natural signals of our mammal bodies as we move through life on autopilot, reacting to the latest dilemma. Each chapter of The Human Herd includes stories spanning all aspects of the human experience along with the core concepts of the Natural Leadership model, plus a set of easy-to-use tools and a variety of exercises and reflective experiences. Her company The Circle Up Experience offers retreats, courses and coaching for individuals and groups. Please visit her website for more information: www.thecircleupexperience.com. Her book is available where ever you buy books B&N, Bookshop dotorg, Books A Million, Powell's, Target, Amazon and more.
Every now and then I get a reminder that I'm only human, and that reminder came in the introduction to this episode where I mispronounce the title of my guest's book. Thankfully, Beth Anstandig had a sense of humor about it, and we had a good laugh. It is someone apropos, as laughing is a part of the human experience and that was a big topic of conversation today! Her book, The Human Herd: Awakening our Natural Leadership is available wherever books are sold. KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: How observing animals impacted her life at a very young age. How she identified and nurtured a love of writing. Why she pivoted from an academic to becoming a writer. The Natural Leadership model explained. The idea behind her book: The Human Herd: Awakening Our Natural Leadership KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM MY TALK WITH BETH At an early age, Beth was fascinated by animal behavior and how it differed from that of humans. Her curiosity guided her to her present career where she coaches people on making more authentic connections to others. Writing as an escape. For Beth, writing has always been a way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's a safe place where she can retreat from the outside world and explore her own thoughts and feelings. The herd. Animals have always been a big part of Beth's life, and she sees something in them that she doesn't see in many humans—honesty and freedom. When Beth watches animals, she feels as though they are living in the moment and not afraid to show their emotions. Following the human herd. It's important to remember that being honest about our needs is not a sign of weakness, but a strength. It shows that we are confident enough to express ourselves and be vulnerable. When we are honest about our feelings and needs, we open up the possibility for deeper connections with others. Sometimes it was imitating voices or there were lines that would inspire me and serve as a launching place. The more I did that, the more I was becoming part of a family of poetry and feeling like it has its own current like a river. It is important for artists to become part of the world that their art resides in.” If you liked this conversation, please tell a friend about it as well as like, rate, and review Uncorking a Story wherever you get your podcasts.

As Humans, we belong in a group. Much like horses, belonging to a group (or herd) allows us to truly thrive. So, what can we learn from horses to help us better connect with those around us, and enable us to lead in more effective ways? In this episode, I speak to Beth Killough, owner of The Circle Up Experience, about how we can see our true nature through the eyes of a horse, and what we can learn from animals to help us center on our human selves. Bio: Beth Killough is the owner of The Circle Up Experience, a consulting firm which provides leadership training and culture development to corporations, universities, teacher groups, first responders, and non-profit organizations. Circle up has trained thousands of leaders all over the country and has designed long-term culture programs to transform workplace relationships. Beth has an MA degree in Clinical Psychology from Santa Clara University and an MFA degree in Creative Writing from Arizona State University. A life-long cowgirl, writer, professor, and a licensed psychotherapist, Beth has 20 years of experience working with people to awaken their innate leadership gifts so they can live and work with more authentic relationship and connection. Circle Up’s model of Natural Leadership and experiential learning with horses integrates human psychology, animal behavior, and natural systems to offer a unique approach to personal and professional development. This approach moves quickly through the rhetoric in human groups and gets to core human issues. Circle Up has been featured on the PBS television show, Start Up, and has been profiled in Forbes magazine. Beth is a seeker and a truth-teller who brings heart and humor into her work. She is gifted at finding The One Question that needs to be asked and using her cowgirl courage to ask it. Beth owns Take a Chance Ranch in Morgan Hill, California where Circle Up hosts workshops. The ranch also hosts women’s events, recovery groups, weekly meditation with Dhammakaya monks, horsemanship events, and art programs. Beth and her human family live on the ranch an ever-growing menagerie of animals who support and participate in the Circle Up work.
It’s hard enough being a parent in normal times. And in times of uncertainty, when schedules are thrown out of whack, superhuman powers are necessary. Alyssa Westring, associate professor and DePaul Presidential Fellow in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, joins host Krys Boyd to talk about managing family life in this current time of upheaval. Her book, co-written with Stewart D. Friedman, is called “Parents Who Lead: The Leadership Approach You Need to Parent with Purpose, Fuel Your Career, and Create a Richer Life.”

Sprachliche Zugangshinweise sind super. Keine Frage.
Motivation ist was tolles.
