Hello and welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast where classical musicians share the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life when the concert halls shut their doors and the audiences vanished. In this episode I'm chatting to Katherine Hunka, leader of the Irish Chamber Orchestra. Her bitter memory is of a career high she was unable to fully celebrate. Her sweet memory is the love that blossomed for her during this time and being able to be totally present for her two boys. The bittersweet was the experience of performing at her favourite festival, with her favourite people, with audiences apart and masked in rows like students in an exam hall. Katherine is leader of the Irish Chamber Orchestra since 2002 and regularly directs from the leader's chair. She has directed premieres with Irish composers Sam Perkin, Ian Wilson, Raymond Dean and John Kinsella, as well as performing concertos and chamber music with artists like Jörg Widmann, and Pekka Kuusisto. In 2020, she released her first solo CD recording with the ICO and received glowing reviews. In that year she also became Artistic Director of the Killaloe Music Festival. Her group “The Far Flung Trio” with accordionist Dermot Dunne and bassist Malachy Robinson spans repertoire from Bach to Klezmer. Katherine has guest led Manchester Camerata, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. She has been guest soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra and the RTE Concert Orchestra. She is currently a lecturer at the MTU Cork School of Music and the Irish World Academy of Music. It's been said that he strips every piece, however familiar it is, back to first principles, and we get to hear it as if for the first time. At the time of this conversation in 2016, he had just been appointed artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra's emerging artists ensemble – ACO Collective – a position he held until 2019. A great friend of Australia and of the ACO, Pekka is always an absolute joy to talk to. In this program, he gets out his violin in the studio to underscore some of his points, and we even get a live performance of a Finnish folk tune.

JRR Tolkien’s literary canon has inspired some of the highest-grossing films ever, now a biopic about his life is being released to cinemas. Tolkien stars Nicholas Hoult as The Lord of the Rings author and looks at his formative years at school and during World War One. But last week the family of Tolkien have issued a rare public statement disavowing the film. Fantasy author and Tolkien fan Samantha Shannon gives her verdict on the film and the disapproval from the Tolkien estate. John Singleton directed Boyz n the Hood when he was 24, becoming the youngest director, and the first African-American to be Oscar nominated. He also worked with rap artists such as Ice Cube, Tupac and Snoop Dogg as well as making the music video to Michael Jackson’s hit Remember the Time which starred Eddy Murphy and Iman. Music journalist Jacqueline Springer considers his legacy. For the first time in its 14 year history, the Afghanistani TV talent competition Afghan Star, has been won by a woman. Journalist Sahar Zand discusses the status of music and women in a country still recovering from the authoritarian rule of the Taliban which banned music and severely restricted women's rights. It's the topic of her new documentary The Art of Now: Afghan Stars which is on Radio 4 next week. Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto and Dr Erik Scherder, Professor in Clinical Neuropsychology, talk about their series of concerts exploring the influence of music on the brain. They demonstrate how music is experienced by brains in different states such as a developing brain, an adult brain, or a vulnerable brain affected by diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. On Thurs 28 Sept 2017, violinist Pekka Kuusisto joins Finnish folk singer, Ilona Korhonen, to present a unique, modern perspective on runo-song, an ancient storytelling tradition from Finland. The Philharmonia Orchestra’s Digital team travelled to Finland to get a preview of what to expect. Ilona sings a story about the origins of the kantele, a traditional Finnish stringed instrument often used to accompany runo-song. Lyrics: I was a slave in Estonia. I received only barley as my wage And took the barley to Sweden to sow. I did not stay to see how it grew, But after five or six weeks I returned. There was a deer in my field, which I took home and fed and cared for. I took its horns and took them to the blacksmith and asked him to make a kantele. He did. But the kantele was not finished. It was lacking one string. Meillä on ooppera- ja olutjuhlat, valkosipuli- ja kamarimusiikkifestivaalit, tango- ja silakkamarkkinat ja eukonkannon ja kesäpilkkimisen maailmanmestaruuskisat. Miksi Suomi juhlii niin vimmaisesti koko kesän? Millainen on suomalaisen kesätapahtuman syvin olemus? Entä millainen on festivaalien tulevaisuus?
