Trey Herweck, pastor at Refuge Church in St. Charles, MO, joins me to talk about living in Interesting Times. We are using the most recent article from The Embassy as our jumping off point. Here is an excerpt:ViewAlthough it is often mislabeled as a Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times” is of English origin. It appears in British diplomatic circles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While there is no equivalent Chinese saying, they (at least according to Wikipedia) do have this: “Better to be a dog in times of tranquility than a human in times of chaos”, which is a bit more, well, interesting. At any rate, we live in interesting times, and we understand the impulse to call that a curse. Our times are in turns unpredictable (except when they are all too predictable), anxiety provoking, polarizing, angry, fearful, dark, and at times, violent. It is the last one that is catching us, or most of us, by surprise. This violence seems increasingly to be cast as a moral response to this broken state of affairs. The murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare, on December 4th of last year is perhaps the most prominent recent example of an act of violence which was justified by some as a moral act. After his arrest for the murder, Luigi Mangione's manifesto was discovered whichindicated that he saw the killing as a direct challenge to the health care industry's “corruption” and “power games.”“Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming,” the document read.NYT - December 20, 2024Based on the reaction to his arrest, many people, many of these being younger people, agreed - this was, to them, a moral act, an attempt to change the world for the better, ending the corruption of the health care industry.Ending the corruption in government was the stated motivation for the man who beat the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer after breaking into their San Francisco home in 2022. He intended to hold the Speaker hostage to extract government changes. A similar motivation was behind the group that plotted to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. Authorities claimed they hoped to start a civil war to bring down a corrupt government. While no motive has been identified after shots were fired into the Democratic National Committee office in Arizona last fall, a fire set in the New Mexico Republican Party headquarters in March of this year was in response to immigration enforcement.Shortly after a dinner with dozens of friends celebrating the beginning of Passover, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and family narrowly escaped the fire destroying their home. The man who has admitted setting the fire cited the treatment of Palestinians in Gaza.A similar motivation was at the heart of the killings of two members of the Israeli Embassy staff in Washington D.C in May and of the man who used fire to injure and kill at a Boulder, Colorado march in support of the Israeli hostages in Gaza.On a different note, Ziz LaSota believes that the threat of artificial intelligence is sufficient to justify violence. She wrote favorably of violence, said she was willing to sacrifice everything to achieve her goals and considered A.I.'s threat to humanity “the most important problem in the world,” she once wrote. Now six people are dead, landing her and several friends and allies, known as the “Zizians,” in jail, awaiting trial.New York Times - July 6, 2025And, of course, two different people on two separate occasions, citing the danger to democracy, attempted to assassinate President Trump.Certainly, there is corruption in health care and government. Many of us are troubled by the at turns absent, then uneven, capricious, and perhaps lawless enforcement of immigration laws. The plight of the Palestinians in Gaza is grievous. It may be true that artificial intelligence poses a threat to humanity. Much of our world is broken. Does this justify violence, specifically lawless violence, in response? And what positive impact does any of this violence have? Far from being a moral statement, lawless violence lacks moral standing, and therefore undermines the cause in the eyes of almost everyone who is not already a true believer. I can't think of any case where violence caused positive change in any democratic society in my lifetime. It tends to alienate those not already onboard, and shows itself to be part of a statement about the person committing violence more than it is about the injustice of the world. I have mentioned before there were more than 2500 anti-war, anti-government bombings in our country during an 18-month period spanning 1971 and 1972. That is about five per day. Those who are old enough to remember it were not surprised that Richard Nixon was re-elected as President in 1972, winning over 60% of the popular vote and 49 states. This violence for a purpose just does not get you to the purpose. It also identifies the brokenness of the world we live in as something unique to our age instead of something common to all ages. This common brokenness is something we are called to engage and redeem, and that won't happen by way of violence. We live in a society of political freedom and, therefore, political responsibility. Far from fulfilling this responsibility, these acts of violence are an abdication from it.Bad times, hard times - this is what people keep saying; but let us live well, and times shall be good. We are the times: such as we are, such are the times.Augustine of Hippo, ~ 400 A.D.Read the whole article here. The Embassy is a reader-supported publication. Data centers and AI chatbots are using electricity faster than new power plants can be built. PJM Interconnection covers thirteen states from Illinois to Tennessee and Virginia to New Jersey. The company serves sixty seven million customers. This summer, electricity bills could jump more than twenty percent in some areas. The region has the most data centers in the world. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is threatening to pull his state out of the grid entirely. Recently, PJM's CEO has announced he's leaving and PJM Board members have been voted out. PJM spokesman Jeffrey Shields says the problem is simple economics. "Prices will remain high as long as demand growth is outstripping supply. Right now, we need every megawatt we can get." The grid lost more than five point six gigawatts in the last decade. Old power plants shut down faster than new ones come online. Meanwhile, data center demand keeps growing. By twenty thirty, PJM expects thirty two gigawatts of increased demand. Almost all of that will come from data centers. Ørsted has secured three billion dollars in financing for a major wind farm project in Taiwan. The Greater Changhua Two project will supply clean energy to over one million households once it's fully operational. The wind farm sits thirty to thirty seven miles off Taiwan's coast. Taiwan wants twenty percent of its electricity to come from renewable sources by twenty twenty five. This project is a critical step toward that goal. Ørsted plans to sell part of its ownership stake after the project is completed. This strategy lets the company recycle money into new projects while keeping operational control. Allete is one step closer to being sold. The Minnesota Department of Commerce has withdrawn its opposition to the six point two billion dollar deal. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Global Infrastructure Partners want to buy the company. Allete runs Minnesota Power and Superior Water, Light and Power of Wisconsin. The sale still needs approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. That's the last hurdle before the deal can close. The new owners have agreed to several customer protections. They'll freeze rates for one year and reduce the company's allowed profit margin. They've also promised fifty million dollars in additional clean energy investments. AEP Ohio has won approval for new rules that protect customers from data center costs. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved the plan on July ninth. Large data centers will now have to pay for at least eighty five percent of the electricity they sign up for, even if they use less. AEP Ohio President Marc Reitter says the rules align data center demand with infrastructure costs. "This infrastructure will support Ohio's growing tech sector and help secure America's data storage facilities here in the U.S." The requirements will last twelve years, including a four year ramp up period. Data center owners must also prove they're financially able to meet their obligations. RWE has extended CEO Markus Krebber's contract until twenty thirty one. The early extension adds another five years to his current agreement. Krebber has led the German energy company since twenty twenty one.

There have also been significant technological advancements, including drones and better communication with local law enforcement helping to secure events. Jim thinks these are good steps and suspects Trump is satisfied with the fallout.Next, they shake their heads as Dr. O'Connor invokes doctor-patient confidentiality and his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination for refusing to answer lawmakers' questions about Joe Biden's true cognitive and physical condition while serving as president. O'Connor declared Biden fully fit to serve as president as late as February 2024.Finally, they get a kick out of the bizarre reasons Kamala Harris ruled out Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as her running mate and the equally odd conclusions they reached for choosing Tim Walz. Walz was not only a terrible choice, but it created more doubt about Kamala's ability to be president. Please visit our great sponsors:Manage your workplace stress with Better Help. New PA law extends “best by” grocery dates for donations. And UPenn researchers turn toxic fungus into potential cancer treatment.

Grocery stores often throw away products that are not expired, but that are past their suggested “Best by” date. That may change in Pennsylvania thanks to a new law signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro last week. It's been more than a century since archeologists discovered the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh known as King Tut. Several members of the discovery team suffered untimely deaths shortly after, and the myth of the “mummy’s curse” was born. Scientists believe that team may have actually been exposed to a toxic fungus. Now, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania say that same fungus could help fight cancer. A recent three day clinic allowed firefighters in the city of Wilkes-Barre to get screened for cancer. First responders have an increased risk of cancer from so-called forever chemicals known as P-FAS, which can come from firefighting gear and smoke inhalation. Republican Congressman Dan Meuser - who explored a run for Pennsylvania governor - reportedly won't challenge Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro next year, even after getting an endorsement from President Donald Trump. More than 450 wildland firefighters are now prepared to repond to wildfires across Pennsylvania and nationwide after training at Shippensburg University. Firefighters from 11 states attended the week-long training, offered through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Bureau of Forestry. York City's comprehensive plan appears to be stalled... three months after it was last scheduled for a vote by city council members. A draft of the 200-page plan was previously available on the city's website, but it was removed sometime between April and July. Pennsylvania could receive as much as 200 million dollars as part of a massive settlement with drug maker Purdue Pharma. That's according to PA Attorney General Dave Sunday. The payout is part of a $7.4 billion deal, stemming from the opioid crisis, in which prosecutors and addiction experts say Purdue and its owners the Sackler family played a major role. The U.S. Senate is considering a spending plan that would eliminate incentives for clean energy. And some Pennsylvania companies say those cuts would devastate their businesses and raise energy costs. Meantime, U.S. Senator Dave McCormick says the future is bright for power production in Pennsylvania. He shared his vision for the state’s energy industry during a visit Monday to western PA. Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania are applauding two Trump administration proposals to rollback rules that cut power plant emissions. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin says the goal is to, in his words, restore American energy dominance. Dozens of campuses in Pennsylvania plan to tap the Solar for Schools program to install solar panels using grant money. Some of the schools are counting on federal tax credits as well. But the budget House Republicans passed last month would make that harder. As the Trump administration ramps up efforts to deport undocumented immigrants, advocates in Pennsylvania are worried problems at the state's largest federal detention center will worsen. The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association is releasing its latest analysis of the Susquehanna River. The nonprofit advocacy organization found high levels of E.coli bacteria at 20 public water access points. An executive order issued late last week clears the way for what's being termed as a "partnership" between Pittsburgh-based US Steel and Nippon Steel of Japan. And Pennsylvania's budget deadline is quickly approaching. Gov. Josh Shapiro and state lawmakers have until June 30th to agree on a new spending plan. Antisemitism isn't just rising in America, it's exploding. And while our institutions hesitate, the attacks are getting louder, deadlier, and more brazen. Just this spring, during Passover, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's home was targeted in an arson attack while he and his family were asleep inside. Soon thereafter, a young Jewish couple was murdered in cold blood in Washington, D.C. Their only crime? Being Jewish. And in Boulder, Colorado, an Egyptian national terrorist launched a brutal assault using Molotov cocktails and a flamethrower on a group of Jewish people who were peacefully assembled to support the Israeli hostages. The attack injured an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor, plus 11 other individuals. The question is no longer whether antisemitism exists. The question is: Why is America tolerating it? On today's episode of Some Future Day, I sit down with Robert Spencer, scholar, historian, and author of the new book “Antisemitism: History and Myth.” Together we trace the ancient roots of Jew hatred, explore how Islamic extremism and Western academia are feeding the flames, and confront the role social media and influencers are playing in amplifying the world's oldest hatred. This conversation is raw, necessary, and deeply unsettling. But it's one we can't avoid. If we stay silent now, the future of Jews in America could mirror the darkest chapters of our past.Episode Links:Website: https://jihadwatch.org/X: https://x.com/jihadwatchRSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jihadwatch.robertspencer/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JihadWatchVideo"Antisemitism: History and Myth" by Robert Spencer: https://a.co/d/12lfxyEOrder Marc's new book, "Some Future Day: How AI Is Going to Change Everything"Sign up for the Some Future Day Newsletter here: https://marcbeckman.substack.com/To join the conversation, follow Marc Beckman here: YoutubeLinkedInTwitterInstagramTikTok

Mark Levin Podcast

On Friday's Mark Levin Show, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a so-called ‘Maryland dad' was sent to an El Salvador prison and brought back to the U.S. today by AG Pam Bondi to face criminal charges. Despite evidence of his crimes, including human trafficking and domestic violence, Democrats, media, and some judges defended him, claiming Trump acted dictatorially and that Garcia lacked due process. They lied; he got due process with an immigration judge and an immigration board. Senators Chris Van Hollen and his Democrats still publicly supported him. How will we ever get this country under control given that the Democrat Party hates America?  Rep Jamie Raskin argues that even under the Alien Enemies Act, due process is necessary, referencing a D.C. Circuit judge who noted that Nazi saboteurs in the U.S. during World War II received due process hearings as a historical precedent for legal fairness. This is the example that Raskin uses? The Nazis had a trial and were executed in less than 3 months.  Also, the FBI and DHS are highlighting threats to Jewish and Israeli communities. It's interesting all the violence goes one way. You don't see Jews trying to kill Palestinians. This is what open borders and the Democrat party gets you. Afterward, there's a hit piece out on the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office Sergio Gor. The piece claims that Gor influenced Trump to withdraw Jared Isaacman's nomination as NASA administrator, allegedly to target Elon Musk, who recommended Isaacman. However, the withdrawal stemmed from Isaacman's donations to Democrats, including $100,000 to a Schumer-aligned PAC, $50,000 to Josh Shapiro's campaign, and other Democratic contributions, with no support for Trump until after the election. This background made Isaacman unsuitable for a key role in a Republican administration.  Later, Iran reportedly ordered thousands of tons of ballistic missile components from China, potentially enabling the production of around 800 missiles. Iran is stalling nuclear negotiations with the U.S. while bolstering its missile capabilities and supplying groups like the Houthis in Yemen.  These actions, supported by China, are efforts to undermine Israel and Western interests.  Finally, Mark honors the 81st anniversary of D-Day. If we had lost on D-Day we would have lost WW2. The casualties were enormous, yet these brave young men put their lives on the line, many knowing they would die. Learn more about your ad choices. Gov. Josh Shapiro is suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture over its attempt to cancel a federally funded food purchasing program. Fewer recipients will get farmers market vouchers this summer and their distribution has been delayed. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture says that’s because the federal government is holding back money appropriated for the vouchers. State Senators on both sides of the aisle agree something helpful could be done with leftover money in campaign accounts. A key committee is advancing a bill to allow that extra money to be donated to nonprofits. An explosion was reported at Shell’s ethane cracker in Beaver County Wednesday afternoon. The State Library is offering a chance to imagine what Harrisburg's Old Eighth Ward looked like over 100 years ago. The U.S. Department of Energy is ordering an oil and gas power plant in southeastern PA to keep its turbines running through the hottest summer months as a precaution against electricity shortfalls in the mid-Atlantic grid. Cumberland County is a step closer to what would be its first data center. And Pennsylvania's cyber charter schools would see their funding cut under a bill passed by the state House this week. We discuss watchmaking in America – specifically what's required to bring watchmaking at scale back to the United States. It's a hot topic these days, particularly as U.S. tariffs, which have been dominating the news, are intended at least in part to bring manufacturing back to the United States. So with that in mind, we thought it would be worth taking a look at what would actually be required to restore the American watch industry. Our guest today is Josh Shapiro, an American independent watchmaker. Based in Los Angeles, and together with a team of watchmakers, engineers and machinists, Josh is bringing watchmaking of the highest level back to the United States. In fact, his latest creation, the Resurgence, is currently the only watch to meet the standard of “made in America” as defined by the United States Federal Trade Commission. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Tuesday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts: ihr.fm/3InlkL8 100 Days of Trump Clay Travis and Buck Sexton dive into a variety of significant topics, starting with the first 100 days of President Trump's second term. They discuss the transformative and fast-paced changes under Trump 2.0, highlighting major investment commitments totaling over $5 trillion from companies like Apple, Nvidia, TSMC, OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. These investments are expected to generate over 451,000 high-paying jobs, surpassing the achievements of the previous administration. The conversation shifts to the upcoming Vice President JD Vance in the second hour. The hosts express their excitement about discussing key issues such as men's and women's sports, tariffs, the border, and the Trump administration's economic policies. They also touch on the Philadelphia Eagles' visit to the White House and briefly mention the Canadian election results, expressing limited interest in Canadian politics. The hosts analyze the impact of Trump's policies on the economy, emphasizing the importance of maximizing energy production and securing significant trade deals. They debate the potential re-election scenarios for past presidents like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Ronald Reagan, speculating on their chances if they had been eligible to run for a third term. VP JD Vance Clay and Buck interview Vice President JD Vance. Vance discusses the first 100 days of the Trump-Vance administration, focusing on the success in securing the border, the challenges posed by far-left judges, and the efforts to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse within the government. He also addresses the issue of men competing in women's sports and defends the administration's tariff policies. After Vance's segment, the hosts continue to explore various political and social issues. They discuss the potential presidential candidates for the 2028 election, including Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The conversation includes speculation about the future of the Democratic Party and the challenges faced by certain candidates due to their backgrounds, including former Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Governor JB Pritzker. The Power of Perception Speaker Mike Johnson praises President Trump's accomplishments in the first 100 days of his second term. Johnson highlights achievements such as removing men from women's sports, ending DEI in the federal government and military, expanding oil and gas extraction, securing trillions in new investments, and combating antisemitism on college campuses. The hosts discuss Senator Tommy Tuberville's enthusiastic support for Trump's performance, grading it an A+. They contrast this with CNN's Harry Enten's analysis, which points out Trump's lower approval ratings compared to his first term and other presidents. Clay and Buck argue that poll numbers are less relevant since Trump is not running for re-election and emphasize the importance of his policy actions over approval ratings. Economic Reality The conversation shifts to the administration's focus on economic issues, particularly inflation. Clay highlights a poll showing that 44% of Americans consider inflation their top economic concern. They discuss the importance of reducing the cost of goods and maintaining economic stability to ensure public support. SEASON 3 EPISODE 119: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Senator Lisa Murkowski may be the most important person in the country right now. Her public confession that she too is afraid of the Trump nightmare and her HINTS at talking to Senate colleagues ABOUT her fear – could provide just enough Republican rebellion to rein Trump in. It feels as if she just got it, as if she just understood that yes Trump is Nazi-esque and yes Trump often emulates the Soviets but the closest parallel to him is O'Brien and "The Party" in Orwell's "1984" and the simple terrifying conviction that "the object of power is power." That's why I think when Kristi Garden Noem and Secretary of Defense (and Vodka) Hegseth (if he's still on the job after ANOTHER Signal chat came to light) file their report on the border to Trump this week and tell him no, they don't need to invoke The Insurrection Act, he may do it anyway because... the object of power is power. Murkowski and thirteen other Republican Senators and at most four Republican Representatives can stop this. They can save the country. They can impeach Trump or if they still can’t get over the hump, the 18 of you can use the THREAT to impeach him, to virtually fetter him, to at least control the width and breadth of his damage, to make him know the Senate WILL vote against him. She can also talk to anybody on the Supreme Court except Alito or Thomas. The other seven, in the middle of the damn night - at 1 AM Saturday - stepped in to freeze any further disappearing Americans under the phony premise of The Alien Enemies Act. And there is reason to hope that these Murkowski-led conversations might happen before the iron curtain of dictatorship descends: Later in her confession of fear, she hinted at doing exactly what I just suggested. Meanwhile, how many times can you self-destruct on this? Gavin Newsom dismisses the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case as a "distraction" and calls Democrats sheep for defending the constitution. On the other hand, Senator Ed Markey is crafting a sense of the senate resolution stating Trump cannot again be elected, and cannot again serve, as president or vice president. Damn Straight. B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Musk Crappertruck Owner who claims to also be a "girl dad"; Pennsylvania congressman Dan Meuser kinda blames Governor Josh Shapiro's criticizing Trump for provoking the attempt to incinerate him and his family in the governor's mansion on Passover. And Trump DEI hire Pam Bondi lies that compulsive martyr and 85th Place Olympic Trials finisher Riley Gaines "went to the Olympics." Not unless she bought a ticket, Pam Blondie. C-Block (55:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The renewed Trump bid to ban the Associated Press got me talking to a friend: How MANY times have I been banned, as a reporter? Do you mean this century, or in total? It's... a lot. From the LA Clippers to the ESPN Campus, I've been banned... a lot. And je ne regret rien!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
