When President Xi Jinping presented his vision 10 years ago for the Silk Road Economic Belt, few might have imagined the global implications of the policy address, delivered to faculty and students at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan. In the eyes of many analysts, the speech marked a historic starting point to reshape the global economic landscape, heralding changes leading to infrastructure connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and closer people-to-people ties.A month later, during a speech to the Indonesian Parliament, the Chinese president expounded his vision for the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which, together with the Silk Road Economic Belt, became known as the Belt and Road Initiative.Ten years on, Xi is set to host representatives from over 140 countries and 30 international organizations at the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation on Tuesday and Wednesday in Beijing.Regarding the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, Tatiana Urzhuvtseva, former director of the research center of China and the Pacific Rim at St. Petersburg State University of Economics, said, "Looking back, one cannot but feel assured that those were truly historic initiatives in favor of goodwill cooperation between nations."Urzhuvtseva, who is now head of the Russian Culture Center in Beijing, said the personal role of President Xi in leading the development of the BRI cannot be overstated.Xu Xiujun, director of the International Political Economy Department of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of World Economics and Politics, said the Chinese president has personally planned and promoted the BRI's transition into a new stage of high-quality development.Through his intense diplomatic agenda, Xi, on bilateral and multilateral occasions, has promoted high-level policy coordination and strategic alignment, created a favorable international environment and established a solid political foundation for the steady and long-term development of the BRI, Xu said.Over the past decade, more than 150 countries and over 30 international organizations have joined the BRI family, with many agreements inked during bilateral meetings attended by the Chinese president. The BRI has taken much-anticipated infrastructure projects from vision to reality in much of the developing world, ranging from bridges, highways and railways to hospitals and sports stadiums. It has created 420,000 jobs for participating countries and lifted about 40 million people out of poverty. The China-Laos Railway, for instance, has employed over 3,500 Laotian workers and created more than 100,000 jobs through its impact on logistics, transportation, trade, commerce and tourism.Charles Okechukwu Onunaiju, director of the Center for China Studies in Nigeria, said that through participation in the Belt and Road, key projects including highways, ports and energy infrastructure are remarkably taking shape in West Africa."The BRI is the concentrated expression of globalization in its broadest sense of accommodation, inclusion and participation, and it carries Africa's fervent historic wish and will," he said. "In the past 10 years, Africa has witnessed the most impactful revolution in infrastructure construction and facilities connectivity."President Xi hosted global leaders at the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing in 2017, and at the second Belt and Road Forum in 2019 in Beijing, both times delivering speeches that outlined the future road map for BRI cooperation. The BRI has also been a priority of Xi's domestic agenda, with the president having chaired high-level symposiums three times on promoting the high-quality development of the landmark initiative.Hu Biliang, executive dean of the Belt and Road School at Beijing Normal University, said the BRI has led the way for China's greater strides in opening-up and emerged as a key part of the national drive to foster a new development paradigm.According to a white paper released earlier this month, the cumulative value of imports and exports between China and BRI partner countries reached $19.1 trillion, with an average annual growth rate of 6.4 percent.Building a better regional connectivity network will inject new momentum into the development of a more open and in-depth partnership between China and other countries participating in the BRI, Hu said.Silk Road Economic Beltn.丝绸之路经济带21st Century Maritime Silk Roadn.21世纪海上丝绸之路Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperationn.“一带一路”国际合作高峰论坛China-Laos Railwayn.中老铁路

Our guest on the podcast this week is the Russian cartoonist Vyacheslav Shilov. He was born in 1970 in Potsdam, Germany. Until recently Vyacheslav Shilov, a member of the Union of Artists and Graphic Artists of the International Federation of UNESCO, lived in St. Petersburg. Today Vyacheslav with his family is outside Russia - in Europe. Vyacheslav Shilov in addition to his talent is known for his civic position. He has worked with the St. Petersburg Ombudsman Aleksander Shishlov (everyone remembers his wonderful human rights calendar). Vyacheslav also drew for Amnesty International: the cover of Amnesty's report on "Agents of the People" was created by Vyacheslav Shilov. The topics we discuss on the podcast include: his education and early career as an artist; The questions we ask Vyacheslav Shilov include:1) You have lived in Potsdam, Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg and now Europe. What has inspired you to move from place to place?2) You graduated in journalism from St. Petersburg State University and yet we know you as an artist. Did they teach you to draw at the University?3) How did you became involved with human rights activists?4) You have drawn for many newspapers (Nevskoe Vremya, Vecherniy Peterburg, Smena). Have you experienced censorship in your work?5) Are there differences of opinion among St. Petersburg artists (and not just cartoonists)? Is there a division between "patriots" and "regime critics"?6) You have recently left Russia with your family after receiving threats. When did these attacks increase in intensity?7) How do you assess the situation in Russia? Are all people engaged in the arts leaving or planning to leave? A lot of people compare the current situation with the emigration to Constantinople in the 1920s or to the ‘Philosophers' Steamship' when intellectuals left Russia after the revolution. Do you agree with these analogies?8) How do you see the future of human rights activism in Russia? What awaits the country and the world?9) What plans do you have while you are in Europe? This podcast is in Russian. You can also listen to the podcast on our website, SoundCloud, Spotify, iTunes, Google Podcasts, Anchor and YouTube. Sergei Nikitin writes on Facebook: “There were several reasons for our departure,” Vyacheslav Shilov said. “The final straw, after which I no longer wished to remain in Russia, was the fact that in the school where we had enrolled our son (it's a good school, of high quality, with good facilities) they began to give political education to the children, talking about the glorious victories of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.”Slava Shilov, our guest on our latest podcast, is a St. Petersburg artist, a great caricaturist and a brilliant graphic artist, told us that when he and his family flew from St. Petersburg to Istanbul, several associations with the past of our motherland surfaced in his mind. These were the ‘Philosophers' Steamship' and the exodus to Constantinople. The passengers on the only voyage that day, the voyage to that very Constantinople, were quiet, intelligent people.Involuntarily comes to mind the history of a hundred years ago, when more than 150 000 people left Russia on 126 ships. And the ‘Philosophers' Steamship' on which in 1922 almost three hundred people left Russia, deported by the Kremlin authorities. ‘The future has been stolen,' says Vyacheslav Shilov, one of the thousands of Russians who left a country that has become an aggressor, a country that has become a disgrace. For how long? War continues to rage in Ukraine as Russia attempts to capture cities across the nation despite fierce resistance. Part of that resistance has been made up of civilian volunteers who've gained new protections for their right to armed defense and been given guns by the military. Anthony Constantini, who received a master's degree in arms control and strategic studies from St. Petersburg State University, joined me on the show to discuss how this strategy of arming civilians represents a departure from traditional European views. And we talk about how it may play out. Anthony wrote an analysis piece for The Reload on how this shift towards civilian gun rights may impact the entire region's attitudes. The situation strikes at the heart of what many gun-rights advocates have long believed: an armed populace is harder to oppress. But the reality is the fight will be brutal and could last for a long time. Arming the public, especially when done as an invasion begins, is not a magic silver bullet that guarantees an easy win. There is no reason to envy the position Ukrainians are in right now, but they've given us many reasons to admire them. Ukraine is unique and better positioned to employ volunteer civilian fighters than many in the west may realize, though. Anthony pointed out the country has been fighting a war with Russian-backed separatists for the past 8 years and volunteers have played a major role. Plus, the government has been actively training those volunteer groups and incorporating them into the military for a good while now. The situation is moving quickly and there is no way to know how things will turn out. However, it appears the Russian invasion has not met its main goal of capturing the country's major cities and deposing its government. We don't know for sure how much the armed population is bolstering the country's military operations, but everything we've heard from the Ukrainian people thus far indicates they have the kind of resolve that will make it extremely difficult to keep them under Putin's heel. Special Guest: Anthony Constantini.
Andrey is a researcher at St.Petersburg State University and a science communicator. Concerning science he's doing heavy ion collisions physics, and takes part in two international collaborations - SHINE (CERN) and MPD (NICA) with a focus on studying the phase transition between hadrons and quark gluon plasma. As a science communicator he gives a lot of lectures about high energy physics in Russia, participates in podcasts and so on. He has a blog (in Russian too) and had a podcast, but only 5 episodes as he had too many projects and it takes a lot of work. He's an outreach and visits coordinator of the SHINE experiment and a guide to two large hadron collider detectors at CERN. If you were a woman in the mid-19th century, some universities might let you attend public lectures on science, but very few would enrol women as regular students. The number of women allowed to sit exams and get academic degrees was vanishingly small. In mathematics it was almost unheard of. But the Russian mathematician Sofya Kovalevskaya changed all that. She was one of the first women in modern Europe both to gain a doctorate in mathematics and become a tenured professor. She was also the first woman to be part of the editorial committee of a leading mathematics journal and the publicity around her achievements helped pave the way for women to play a greater role in university life. Above all, she was an outstanding mathematician with at least one theorem bearing her name still used to this day. So how did Kovalevskaya do it? How much was talent? How much luck and opportunity? And how much just sheer force of character? To guide us through Sofya Kovalevskaya's eventful life - and her equations – Bridget Kendall is joined by three experts: Ann Hibner Koblitz, professor emerita at Arizona State University and the author of A Convergence of Lives: Sofya Kovalevskaya - Scientist, Writer, Revolutionary; June Barrow-Green, professor of the history of mathematics at the Open University in the UK and chair of the International Commission on the History of Mathematics; and Elena Arsenyeva, associate professor at St. Petersburg State University in Russia and the coordinator of the Leonhard Euler International Mathematical Institute. On June 21, the Russian Attorney General's Office declared the American liberal arts university Bard College an "undesirable organization." Bard has collaborated with St. Petersburg State University and Russia's Accounts Chamber Chairman Alexey Kudrin for many years, but the Attorney General's Office maintains that its "activity poses a threat to the basic constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation." Meduza digs into why Bard College was blacklisted as "undesirable" and uncovers what Alexander Ionov - the same man who demanded that Russia declare our media outlet a "foreign agent" - had to do with it.

I am sharing with you a cool mineral discovery that took place just last year. Petrovite, the new mineral is a newly discovered fumarolic sulfate and it was found in the Great Tolbachik fissure eruption in the Kamchatka Peninsula area of Russia. Although I love working with gems and minerals, I'm also writing on topics such as renewables for CleanTechnica and this article by Open Access Government caught my eye. The article pointed out that Petrovite could power batteries and touched upon the idea of using minerals to create renewable energy. "What if naturally occurring substances could power the batteries of the world?" That was the question asked in the article. Petrovite is one such mineral and has an interesting chemical composition. The chemical structure of the mineral is a mix of sodium, calcium, copper, sulfur, and oxygen. The mineral looks really cool with blue globular aggregates of tabular crystals that have gaseous inclusions. Petrovite has oxygen atoms, sodium-sulfur, and copper and together these create a porous framework that connects the voids to one another through channels that act as an interstate highway for small sodium atoms to travel. It's an interesting read and the article cited a study by the University of Cambridge. I will include the links to both below. The photo cover for the podcast is not mine but is from the Mineralogical Museum of St. Petersburg State University. Segment #3 of 3, 3–3:30 p.m.: Next Generation Connections - Working Together Join a discussion on how our shared history and the unique legacy of Fort Ross State Historic Park can be a platform for cooperation and exchange between Russians and Americans, even amid severe challenges in relations between Washington, D.C. and Moscow. The final panel looks towards the future by bringing four young Russians and Americans from different disciplines to discuss their bilateral work and ideas for the future.
