In this episode of the St Emlyn's podcast, hosts Iain Beardsell and Liz Crowe talk with Nathalie Pattyn at TacTrauma24 in Sweden about the phenomenon of skills fade amongst emergency physicians. Nathalie discusses her extensive background in medicine, psychology, and neuroscience, and shares insights from her research on how skills can deteriorate during low workload deployments, such as her 15-month clinical stint in Antarctica. They delve into the lack of systemic measures to address returning to practice after long absences, how cognitive and psychomotor skills are affected by skill fade, and the contrast between teaching technical skills and ensuring they become automatic and stress-resilient. The conversation highlights the need for evidence-based guidelines to ensure healthcare professionals maintain their proficiency, which ultimately benefits patient care and the healthcare system. 00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction 00:13 Natalie's Background and Expertise 00:38 Skills Fade in Emergency Medicine 01:01 Personal Experience with Skills Fade 02:14 Regulations and Policies on Skills Maintenance 04:19 Imposter Syndrome vs. De-skilling 06:42 Aviation vs. Medical Field: Skills Certification 08:27 Aging and Cognitive Decline in Medical Skills 09:57 Teaching vs. Training in Medical Education 12:42 Future Directions and Systemic Solutions 14:31 Conclusion and Contact Information The Guest Nathalie Pattyn, MD, MPsy, PhD, received a degree in medicine from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (magna cum laude, 2001), a Master in Clinical Psychology from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (cum laude, 2004), a PhD in Psychological Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2007) and a PhD in Social and Military Sciences from the Royal Military Academy (2007). This series of podcast-interviews gives researchers from all over Europe a voice. We exchange views from different countries, talk about background specifics, and try to give an honest assessment of the state of the EU. In this episode we learn from António Raimundo about the specific situation in Portugal, the fact that in contrast to other European countries populism does not play a major role in Portugal, about the way the European integration is viewed in Portugal, and about the way the role of the so-called “smaller countries” within in the EU is evolving. António Raimundo is a Research Fellow at the Research Centre in Political Science of University of Minho. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Masters in European Politics from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Recently he completed a postdoc on the Europeanization of Portuguese foreign policy and was part of the European research project “EU Foreign Policy Facing New Realities”. He has been Guest Lecturer in several Portuguese universities and has contributed to the “Yearbook of European Integration” of the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) as national expert on Portugal. His research has covered topics such as European integration, Europeanization, Portugal's European and foreign policy, Brexit and EU-Africa relations. Among other outlets, he has published in the Journal of European Integration, Journal of Contemporary European Studies and European Politics and Society. Notes: When debating the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, António at one point talks about "moving towards unanimity“, when he actually meant moving towards majority voting. The book António Raimundo mentioned is the Oxford Handbook of Portuguese Politics: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-oxford-handbook-of-portuguese-politics-9780192855404?cc=de&lang=en& Moderation: Felix Heidenreich (IZKT) A project produced in cooperation with the Public Library of Stuttgart and Stiftung Geißstraße Stuttgart.

Giancarlo Kerg (Google Scholar) is a PhD student at Mila, supervised by Yoshua Bengio and Guillaume Lajoie. He is working on out-of-distribution generalization and modularity in memory-augmented neural networks. Prior to his PhD, he studied pure mathematics at Cambridge and Université Libre de Bruxelles. His most recent paper at NeurIPS is Untangling tradeoffs between recurrence and self-attention in neural networks. It presents a proof for how self-attention mitigates the gradient vanishing problem when trying to capture long-term dependencies. Building on this, it proposes a way to scalably use sparse self-attention with recurrence, via a relevancy screening mechanism that mirrors the cognitive process of memory consolidation.
