The mission of the Hub is to implement projects with a local impact in three main areas, (i) Climate Change & Sustainability, (ii) Active Citizenship and (iii) Education and employment. The Shapeathon is an event that aims to help local NGOs and startups having a positive social impact finding a solution to a "burning issue": a specific problem or objective they want to tackle within their organization (e.g. marketing, strategic planning, funding issues, etc.). In the afternoon, a group of advisors meet these local NGOs and startups. The advisors, divided in groups mixing backgrounds and areas of expertise, meet the local NGOs and brainstorm solutions to their problems.

"We have companies that have raised Series B, had the first female founder raise the highest amount of Series A funding, and have CBCs, which is the biggest ever in the Philippines. I'm cautiously optimistic about the country in terms of the next stage of funding because of what's happening in the market. We have a lot of good founders and strong fundamentals, but because of what's happening in the public and private markets, we're affected in terms of the succeeding funding in Series C, pre-IPO, and Series B. We lack investors in that area for all the companies that have just raised their Series B."- Caela Tanjangco "There are disadvantages to being founders who don't speak English or who might have problems communicating about their startup when pitching to global funds. I won't say that's a shortfall, but it's an issue that entrepreneurs need support with. It's a gap that we need to address so that they're better acknowledged and understood by global investors." - Caela Tanjangco Read the transcript here at: www.bravesea.com/blog/caela-tanjangco Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464 Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau?lang=en Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau Visit our community at: www.bravesea.com

Torej hire for attitude, train for skills.

As thousands of people ascended into Glasgow to attend COP26, young people fought to have their voices heard. But beyond COP how do we ensure youth have a seat at the climate table not just now but always? For the month of November, #NextPagePod has gone green in support of COP26. So far we've featured conversations exploring climate issues, youth activism, the science behind the policy and of course talked about what role multilateralism plays in the future of our planet. In this final episode, we are going back to what inspired this series in the first place, COP26, as we talk to one of the young Australian delegates on the final day of the conference.  In this episode, we talk to Holly Crockford to hear what she has learned on the ground from a youth perspective but also what she hopes to see after the conference ends. They're working with green and blue infrastructure and carbon-negative materials developers to start a new era of Carbon Culturing. The startup describes its process as an "ultra-rapid conversion" where woody residues are turned into functional biocarbons at an extremely high temperature. Studies show that 98% of domestic violence victims also experience financial abuse and stay in abusive relationships due to financial insecurity. Today’s guest is Joy McBrien and her ethical jewelry brand Fair Anita creates financial opportunities for women around the world. Their artisans partners carefully design and create every product by hand, and Fair Anita also gives them the resources for economic self-sufficiency. Along with that, Fair Anita also maintains strong ethical standards in the production chain, working conditions, living wages, and full transparency of business practices. Join me as I speak with Joy about the journey of Fair Anita, and the life-changing mission to help women feel safe, valued, and respected, no matter where they live.   3:58 - The Joy 101   Joy started Fair Anita when she was just 24-years-old to help combat the issues with sexual violence that she’d experienced in her own life. After a lot of research, it became clear to her that financial insecurity is the main reason women stay in abusive partnerships. She also knew early on that she wanted her organization to help tackle the problems that can be found in consumerism and the exploitation of women in consumer supply chains. Starting her first jewelry company at age 15 gave Joy a knowledge of jewelry design that helped her connect to artisans and the ways they incorporate their own culture into designs. While living in Peru, Joy witnessed horrible factory conditions and became passionate about knowing where her purchases came from and the working conditions of the people making those products. Joy knew there were already many big names in the fair trade world but realized an opportunity to make fair trade products that were more personalized, accessible, and affordable.   8:55 - Developing Fair Anita   As she traveled the world, Joy built a network of women doing incredible work and reached back out to them when she started Fair Anita. They worked together to incorporate artisan’s traditional skills into updated designs for US markets.  Joy was very intentional to make sure Fair Anita offered fair trade goods with accessible price points. She believes ethical fashion is only truly ethical if it is affordable and accessible to more than one subset of people.  Fair Anita artisans are still paid two to three times the living wage where they’re located. Volume of sales rather than higher-priced items makes this possible. The demand is being driven by Millennials and recent a Forbes article shows that 73% of Millennials are likely to purchase a mission-based product if they’re given a comparable alternative in price and design. Brands will have to adapt to this demand and start focusing more of their supply chains on ethical practices. This helps create a fair trade market that is accessible to average consumers as well. Smaller brands also get a chance to shine and push the market to meet higher fair trade standards.   17:20 - Sustainable Options and Ethical Storytelling   Moving forward, Fair Anita wants to continue helping larger organizations improve by creating sustainable options for their customers. Joy will also be turning her focus to international women’s rights and bringing suppliers back into direct conversations about supply chains. One of the biggest parts of Fair Anita’s mission is making sure artisans give consent for their stories to be shared. Artisans should be the ones deciding whether or not to share about their lives, which also means managing consumer’s expectations to hear them. When people do decide to share their story, it’s important to create safe spaces where they can share rather than have other people repeating their stories.      32:37 - Getting To Know Our Guest   Find out who Joy would most like to sit next to on a 10-hour flight, her guilty pleasure, what books she’s reading, and of course, what it means to run a business with purpose. ABOUT JOY Joy McBrien is a global learner who is passionate about creating opportunities for women and girls. She is the Founder and CEO of Fair Anita, a social enterprise that strives to build a more inclusive economy for women by providing economic opportunity and dignified jobs through beautiful fair trade jewelry and accessories. She has worked with thousands of women around the world, using her empathetic nature to understand circumstances and develop creative solutions, including having built a battered women’s shelter in Peru and working at a girl-focused middle school in St. Paul. Joy has been recognized for her leadership in this space, giving a TEDx talk and receiving awards including: Top Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans 2015, Open Hands Initiative Fellow 2016, Minnesota Business Magazine’s 35 Entrepreneurs Under 35, CauseArtist's 35 Entrepreneurs to Watch, and the Real Power 50 Award. Joy is a member of the Global Shapers Community, and has spoken on women's issues at various events with the World Economic Forum, including the Annual Meeting of New Champions (aka Summer Davos) and the Sustainable Development Impact Summit. Mighty Axe Hops is using experimentation to create an ecosystem within an ecosystem. Eric Sannerud is an experimenter. He tries small experiments, gathers feedback and then adjusts. For example, in 2013, he was graduating from the University of Minnesota. At the same time, he had several irons in the fire. He was part of a team that launched Twin Fin, an innovative urban farm start-up, growing fish and greens in a city warehouse. At the same time, he was involved with the Famers’ Legal Action Group (FLAG). He was also involved with Urban Oasis, the winner of a $1 million Forever Saint Paul Competition to create a sustainable food center on the East Side of Saint Paul. And, he cofounded the Sandbox Center for Regenerative Entrepreneurship. And, in his spare time, he managed to co-found Mighty Axe Hops, building and leading a new industry in Minnesota. Eric explains, “There’s a sliver in your life where your commitments and your personal life might not be as stringent as they tend to grow to be, and I wanted to make full use of that time.” He talks about the importance of an experimental mindset. “They were all really low-risk. As they begin to grow, you try to commit more resources to the ones that look like they will bring better results.” Eventually, Eric began to focus his efforts. “That time of being involved in many things, I’m really shrinking it down to just being involved in the things I want to be involved with.” Today, he spends his time growing Mighty Axe Hops. He and his co-founder Ben Boo have grown their operations from 20 plants to a new 80-acre farm. Mighty Axe Hops is creating a hops-growing ecosystem in Minnesota. Where no hops industry existed before, a cottage industry of inputs, processors, marketers, farm implements is beginning to grow. The hops industry is an ecosystem within an ecosystem. The rise of craft beer and microbreweries gives rise to the need for local hops with unique flavor profiles. Not only is Mighty Axe Hops creating an ecosystem, they are growing within the fertile ground of the Minnesota social good ecosystem. They started as a student-led start-up, launched during the Acara program at the University of Minnesota. Eric is also a member of the local Global Shapers Community and is an active member of the Impact Hub, Minneapolis-St. Paul. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Eric Sannerud “I was looking for something that would or could become a job.” “I was involved in a number of startups through late college and just after college.” “It boils down to, I want to make a difference with my life.” “At that phase of my life, I was just saying yes.” “I know what I want to do for the next five years.” “That was the little money we needed to put more proof behind our concept.” “Our main goal is to create a vibrant Minnesota hops industry.” “It never felt sharky.” “I think the reason I like entrepreneurship is because of how challenging it is.” “We’re directly measuring water quality and soil health.” “The thing that helped me the most was learning to just do it.” “Start something and try something, but in a smart way.” “I always approach it like a scientific hypothesis.” “Test as many of your assumptions in your business plan as possible, with the least amount of risk.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: Mighty Axe Hops: http://www.mightyaxehops.com Mighty Axe Hops on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MightyAxeHops Mighty Axe Hops on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MightyAxeHops Mighty Axe Hops on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mightyaxehops
