See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

56: Owsla Scripted by John Ruths and Newell Fisher. What is an Owsla? Without an Owsla, the ONLY structure in a warren would be the Chief Rabbit. Hazel became Chief Rabbit simply based on his personality. Woundwort got to be a Chief by killing the previous one, so by a hostile takeover. Who knows how Cowslip got to be a Chief but one might guess it was simply because he was the most 'in charge'. The Chief can't do everything. And here is how the Owlsa is born. It'll be made up of rabbits who are strong enough, maybe big enough, maybe fast enough, and very likely brave enough to do what needs to be done. Adam's mentions, in his footnotes, that a good storyteller might find a place in an Owsla in some warrens. And definitely a seer such as Fiver. Anytime a group of rabbits form, an Owsla would probably more or less work themselves out. The four Owsla's of WD in order. Sandleford's Owsla The Sandleford Owsla seems to be one that tolerates petty privileges for Owsla members. And this is what gives Hazel the notion of leaving even before Fiver's premonition. It also seems to help drive Bigwig away, an Owsla member. And, for that matter, Silver. But this Owsla is nowhere near as bad as that of Efrafa. This changes in the 1978 film. When Captain Holly catches the group trying to leave Sandleford, it is worth paying attention to what he actually says. In the book, Holly is only concerned with the Owsla members Bigwig and Silver. He doesn't seem to be concerned with the rest of the group at all. But in the 1978 film the actions of the Owsla are far harsher. The group that tries to leave is larger than in the novel, seemingly including does and maybe even some kittens, and most of them are immediately rounded up. Captain Holly then intercepts the remaining bucks and tells them they are ALL under arrest. This is at 13:20. So the Sandleford Owsla of the film seems to be far more like that of Efrafa. The Warren of the Snares Owsla It seems that an ad hoc posse-like Owsla can be raised fairly effectively when needed in this warren, as in when Holly's party, escaping from Sandleford, have the bad luck to bump into them. It is this Owsla that is the only one in the book that kills a rabbit from Sandleford: the already sick Pimpernel. This is a warren where leadership and discipline has ceased to matter a long time ago and even their most dangerous actions are more motivated by their mass suicidal-delusion than any desire for self-protection. WD's Owsla Bigwig was the Chief of a "very free and easy Owsla" at the end of WD. The Owsla formed pretty early, with Bigwig as the charter member. Silver and Buckthorn were the next members. In "Tales from WD" Hazel comments, at one point, "We're all in the Owsla, really". By the end of the novel we see that the elderly chief, Hazel-rah, has a sentry outside his burrow. This may indicate that the WD Owsla has become a little more formalised. Efrafa's Owsla This is the only Owsla in the book with more than one Captain, each in charge of a Mark, or wide-patrols. The implication of the name of the chief rabbit, GENERAL Woundwort, seems to be that he is also the head of the Owsla. Efrafa has another structure that is unique in the book: the Council and their 'Owslafa' or 'Council Police'. The Council take on some of the Chief Rabbit's roles. The differences between the two security bodies are that the Owslafa is mostly concerned with internal security. The Owsla is mainly concerned with their own rabbits within each of the four marks. So an Owslafa member would never have to worry about going on Wide Patrol. On the other hand, a member of the Owsla would not be given prisoner escort duty. The council is not a representative body of each mark. In fact you could say it is more of a Civil Service. Conclusion The Owslas of WD run a spectrum of formality, from least to most formal, as follows: Snares Watership Down Sandleford Efrafa --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/watershipdown/message

29: Death in Watership Down This episode is dedicated to Elli 29.1 Burrowkeeping The theme of this episode has kind of been dictated by events. Last Friday, one of our cats was killed on a road near where we live. So...on the principle that, if life gives you lemons, you should probably make lemonade, death in WD will now be the theme of this episode, as a tribute to our Elli cat. 29.2 The death-toll of the book Death is an unavoidable part of WD. It even has a specific character dedicated to it. Yet there are very few direct references to deaths in the book. There is a brief reference to the possible death of Strawberry's mate Nildro-hain in Chapter 17. The Shining Wire. The named death-toll at Sandleford, and during Holly and Bluebell's terrible journey to WD, is Scabious, Celandine, Toadflax and Pimpernel. The escape of Holly's mission to Efrafa, in Chapter 27, leads to the death of Captain Charlock on the Iron Road. We only learn this from Hyzenthlay in Chapter 35. Then, in Chapter 32, during the expedition to Efrafa, Bigwig leads a fox onto an Efrafan wide-patrol. We later learn, from Woundwort in Chapter 37, that this lead to the death of Mallow. I think I am right in saying that the first direct contemporaneous reference to a death in WD is that of the doe Thrayonlosa at the beginning of Chapter 40. The Way Back. Even at the climax of the book, at the conclusion of the siege of WD, there is only a direct reference to the death of one Efrafan sentry at the start of Chapter 49. Hazel Comes Home. Though we should perhaps realistically conclude that Woundwort was also killed? And then there is, of course, the incredibly poignant death of the aged Hazel in the Epilogue. This gives us a verifiable book death-toll of...10. Or 11 if you accept that Woundwort wasn't actually invulnerable. Please feel free to challenge my figures. So the named death-toll of the book is: Nildro-hain Scabious Celandine Toadflax Pimpernel Captain Charlock Mallow Thrayonlosa An un-named Efrafan sentry of the Great Patrol General Woundwort Hazel Of these, 5 are killed by humans or human activity. The others are killed by other rabbits, a fox, as a result of an injury and two by a dog. Only one dies of old-age. 29.3 The death-toll of the 1978 film There is a video, on YouTube, of questionable taste, called "Watership Down (1978) Kill Count". It has to be said, though, that it is very accurate, and its total is a shocking...62 observable deaths. It misses the death of Mallow, giving a death-toll of 63...plus Woundwort, giving a final observable death-toll in the film of 64. However, the named death-toll of the 1978 film, despite its bloodthirsty nature, is a surprisingly low 3: Violet Blackavar Hazel 29.3 The Black Rabbit of Inlè The Black Rabbit of Inlè, who we will meet shortly in the book, is a fascinating mythological figure. Basically he (we have to assume his sex in historical context) is the rabbit Grim Reaper. Yet he is a bit subtler than that. In the 1978 film, Hazel seeks to make a deal with Frith, the rabbit Sun God, at the climax of the film, as he seeks to rescue the WD warren from the besieiging Efrafans. Frith responds to him directly in a very poignant moment. However, in the original book the words spoken by Frith are actually spoken by the Black Rabbit to El-ahrairah in one of the tales told by Dandelion a lot later in the story, and the Black Rabbit then takes the action necessary to save El-ahrairah's people. So he is not just an impartial taker of lives at their inevitable end. He can choose to take lives or to save them. John Ruths identifies 4 attitudes towards death in WD. First there is a kind of pragmatic callous attitude. Then there is death as a feature of fate. Then there is death as an utter pointless waste. Lastly, there is death as a noble act or sacrifice. 29.4 Next Episode Next time, we begin Part Three of the book...and the Great Raid On Efrafa begins. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/watershipdown/message

19: Chapter 21. ‘For El-ahrairah to Cry' The chapter is the first in the book to open with two quotes. Holly begins his account by saying what happened in the immediate aftermath of the group leaving Sandleford. The search was quickly called off. The following day there were a lot of rumours about Fiver saying something bad was coming. On the next day he saw a group of men approach the Warren. They looked at all the holes. The next day was very different. He noticed a hrududu in a lane near the Warren. A lot of men were getting out of it, as well as a boy with a gun. The men carried long heavy objects into the field. After a while one of them started filling in the entrances of all the holes he could find. He continues that another man fetched some things like lengths of bramble. One of these was attached to each of the long heavy objects. There was a hissing sound and the air started to "turn bad". The heavy objects were clearly gas cannisters. The brambles were hoses. The men put one of the hoses in each of the holes they had not blocked up. After a while Holly saw a rabbit called Scabious come out of a hole the men had missed. The boy shot him. Bluebell, who was underground, takes over the story. He says the does seemed to be affected by the gas first. They tried to get out, apart from the ones with kittens, who started attacking anyone who came near them. The runs started to fill up with rabbits trying to claw and clamber over eachother to use ways out that no longer existed. Bluebell explains how lucky he was in being able to escape. The gas wasn't working in the open run he was in and he managed to keep his senses and run back down to an old deep run called the "Slack Run". Terrible sounds were coming down shafts from above. Bluebell found himself with another rabbit called Pimpernel, who knew the way out. Bluebell was terrified Pimpernel would die and block the run ahead. Eventually they smelled fresher air and emerged from a hole in the woods. Holly takes up the story again. Eventually the men took the hoses out of the holes and the boy put all the dead rabbits on a stick. This detail is too much for Holly, who stops for a moment. Holly then describes what is clearly a JCB having come into the field and dug it up. In describing this it is clear that among the earth it dug up were the bodies of rabbits. Holly was joined by Bluebell, Pimpernel and Toadflax, the Owsla member who bullied Fiver out of eating a cowslip in Chapter One. All Holly could think about was finding Bigwig so he could apologise to him. During the night Toadflax died. The remaining three rabbits found the place where Hazel's group had crossed the Enbourne. He describes crossing the road and coming to the Common. Pimpernel was feverish and Holly was afraid he would die too. They fell asleep, exhausted, and woke up the next day to find themselves surrounded by rabbits from the Warren of the Snares. As soon as Holly mentioned the names of the rabbits they were looking for, Cowslip ordered them torn to pieces. Holly got his ear ripped badly in the fighting, but he and Bluebell got away quite easily. But Pimpernel was left behind and must have been killed. Holly decided to take on Cowslip, who saved his skin by telling Holly where Hazel's group had headed. Holly's ripped ear was painful and Bluebell kept him going by joking with him the whole time. All he could think about was finding Bigwig to tell him he had been right to leave. When they reached the foot of WD and Bigwig was not there to greet him, his mind finally went. It was a happy coincidence that Bigwig was, indeed, close by to hear him. He closes by saying how grateful he is to be here with them all and tells Bigwig that the rabbit who tried to arrest him was another rabbit a long time ago. 19.3 Next Episode The rabbits react to Holly's account, Hazel explains making friends with mice and Bluebell tells a story of El-ahrairah --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/watershipdown/message

Important Events May 27, 1873 On this day, out of Pratt’s Junction, Massachusetts, there was a detailed post about how to make a floral clock. “Please tell the girls if they think country life dull... they can pass many happy hours… studying the plants about them. I saw it stated that Linnaeus had what he termed a floral clock, and a few of the flowers forming it were given with their time of blossoming: Yellow Goat's Beard, 3 a.m. Chicory, 4 a.m. Sow Thistle, 5 a.m. Dandelion, 6 a.m. ; Lettuce and White Water Lily, 7 a.m. Pimpernel, 8 a.m. Field Marigold, 9 a.m. May 27, 1911 Today is the birthday of the American actor Vincent Price. Known for his performances in horror films, Vincent also enjoyed gardening. He especially loved cymbidium orchids, and he had hundreds of them growing on the shady side of his California home. He also grew wildflowers, cactus, poinsettia, and geraniums in his multi-level garden. And when he walked home in the evenings after his performances, he would keep his eyes peeled for discarded plants and trees. After bringing them back to his garden, he would nurse them back to health. Vincent had many ponds, including an old bathtub that he had repurposed as a pond. He loved the bathtub pond so much that he placed it in the center of his garden. But there was another unique aspect of Vincent’s garden: a totem pole. Vincent had bought the totem pole from the estate of John Barrymore. Barrymore stole the 40-foot tall totem pole from an abandoned Alaska village. Barrymore had his crew saw the totem pole into three pieces before loading it onto Barrymore's yacht. Once he arrived at his home in California, Barrymore removed the remains of a man that were still inside the totem. Then he reassembled it and displayed it in his garden. After buying the totem from the Barrymore estate, Vincent put the totem in his garden. The carved images of a killer whale, a raven, an eagle, and a wolf watched over his garden until he donated the totem pole to the Honolulu Museum of Art in 1981. The totem pole remained safe in a climate-controlled basement for generations until a University of Alaska professor named Steve Langdon tracked it down in Hawaii sometime after the year 2000. Steve learned about the totem pole after stumbling on an old photo of Vincent Price. He was standing next to the totem pole in his garden. Langdon had an immediate reaction to the photo. He recalled, "It was totally out of place. Here's this recognizable Hollywood figure in a backyard estate with a totem pole ... that was surrounded by cactus." By 2015, Steve was finally able to return the totem pole back to its ancestral tribe in Alaska. When Vincent Price died from Parkinson's disease and lung cancer in 1993, his family honored his wishes and scattered his ashes in the ocean along with petals from red roses. Vincent had cautioned his family not to scatter his ashes in Santa Monica Bay. He said it was too polluted. Instead, his family found a spot off of Point Dume. At the last minute, they had decided to include Vincent’s favorite gardening hat in the service. The hat was made of straw and had a heavy wooden African necklace around the brim, and so Vincent’s ashes were scattered on the water accompanied by red rose petals and his old straw hat. Unearthed Words “I nodded, appreciating the wisdom of her words.‘Yellow is the colour of early spring,’ she said, ‘just look at your garden!’ She gestured towards the borders, which were full of primulas, crocuses, and daffodils. ‘The most cheerful of colours,’ she continued, ‘almost reflective in its nature, and it is, of course, the colour of the mind.’ ‘That’s why we surround ourselves with it!’ laughed Phyllis, ‘in the hope that its properties will rub off.’‘Nonsense dear,’ said Mrs. Darley dismissively, ‘Yellow light simply encourages us to think more positively. It lifts our spirits and raises our self-esteem in time for summer.’I immediately made a mental note to surround myself with the colour of the season and, like Phyllis, hoped that some of its properties would rub off on me. ― Carole Carlton, English Author of the Mrs. Darley series of Pagan books and owner of Mrs. Darley's Herbal, Mrs. Darley's Pagan Whispers: A Celebration of Pagan Festivals, Sacred Days, Spirituality, and Traditions of the Year Grow That Garden Library Plants by Kathy Willis This book came out in 2015, and the subtitle is From Roots to Riches. The Preakness Stakes is named for the colt who won the first Dinner Party Stakes at Pimlico. Held on the third Saturday in May each year, the race takes place two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes. The race is also the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and it’s nicknamed "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" in reference to the blanket of flowers placed over the winner. Black-Eyed Susans are the state flower of Maryland. Although the Preakness is sometimes referred to as "the race for the black-eyed Susans," no Black-Eyed Susan is ever used. When race organizers realized that the race's timing didn’t coincide with the late summer to early fall bloom of Black-Eyed Susan, they found some yellow daisies and hand-painted the centers of the blossoms with a little dash of black lacquer to make them look like Black-Eyed Susans. The Black-Eyed Susan was designated the state flower of Maryland in 1918. The Black-Eyed Susan or Rudbeckia Hirta's history begins in North America. After the flower was brought to Europe in the 1700s, Carl Linnaeus named them to honor his old teacher and mentor Olaus Rudbeck. On July 29, 1731, Linnaeus wrote with admiration about his old professor, Rudbeck, saying: "So long as the earth shall survive and as each spring shall see it covered with flowers, the Rudbeckia will preserve your glorious name." Black-Eyed Susans are a favorite of gardeners. They bloom continuously from about mid-July until the first frost. The Black-Eyed Susan is a great pollinator plant. As a member of the daisy family, they offer that daisy shape and give the garden a warm yellow color that is perfect for ushering in autumn. All that Black-Eyed Susans require is the sun. All gardeners need to do is enjoy them and remember to cut a few to bring indoors; they are a fantastic cut flower. Black-Eyed Susans play nice in bouquets, and they also look great as a solo flower in a vase. There have been new varieties of Black-Eyed Susans introduced over the past couple of decades. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the city of Denver, the Denver Daisy was introduced in 2008. It is a cross between the Rudbeckia hirta species and the Rudbeckia prairie sun. One of my personal favorites is the Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherry brandy.' Imagine a red Black-Eyed Susan, and that's basically Cherry brandy. Simply gorgeous. Black-Eyed Susans are important to wildlife. They offer food and shelter for birds and animals; rabbits, deer, and even slugs like to eat this plant. As most of us know that the monarch and the milkweed co-evolved together, the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly and the Black-Eyed Susan did the same. The Silvery Checkerspot lays her eggs on Black-Eyed Susans, which are the food source for the little baby caterpillars after they hatch. In floriography, Black-Eyed Susans symbolize encouragement and motivation. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

This title was released in December 2020. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until January 31st 2021, and on general sale after this date. It's 1793 and the Reign of Terror is slicing through the elite of Paris - but not if the Scarlet Pimpernel has anything to do with it! With a very British pluck, and daring bravado, he rescues French aristocrats from Madame Guillotine's embrace. But who hides beneath the Pimpernel’s mask? And isn’t the Scarlet Pimpernel just a fictional character? At Highmoor House, in England, Peri plays lady of the manor while the Doctor tends to the strange wounds of her ‘husband’, Sir Percy Blakeney. As Peri prepares to host a lavish ball in Sir Percy’s name, French agent Citizen Donat, and a sinister alien force are uninvited guests, both intent on unmasking the Scarlet Pimpernel and putting an end to his heroic escapades, forever!

Its December 5, 2019, we are back with another Munich Exclusive Podcast for the Decisive Series. Thanks a lot for your attention! Today I invited to the program "A Lizard Called A" my guest has great taste in his selection of electronic music is humble, cool, friendly gentlemen, and a lovely person. This time I won't say much, to allow you your space to embrace the warm, electric, melodic, uncompromising sound of the Russian native "A Lizard Called A". Take a listen you won't be disappointed. The track list is available as well. Bigs Ups Roberto Q. Ingram Hello lovely people, I'm A lizard called A and I love to play records. This phrase is already describing everything pretty well... But ok, let's add some few details :) I come from Russia where my love for electronic music started to grow in the late 90s. Some years ago I decided to start with DJing and went the way from digital controller to vinyl & turntables and back to the digital world. I played so far at places like Die Registratur bar, Fantom, Pimpernel, Palais, also playing regularly at fancy JoJo bar in my home town. Apart from clubs, I recorded some sets for radio stations & podcasts like 674FM Cologne, Discotribe Munich, Radiobav Munich. From warm deep house and disco over timeless Chicago & Detroit sound to sweaty acid, smashing techno and freezy electro cuts. Genre does not matter, but the spirit does. And I just can again repeat the mantra "For your mind, your body and your soul". Om. For this mix, I picked up the recent releases of some of my favorite artists and labels I'm already following for quite some time and simply tried to showcase the sound I'm currently fascinated about. It has its roots in the golden rave era of the 90s, but in modern cover where dreamy landscapes are percolated by trippy percussions and broken beats. So it sounds nostalgic but still "hot shit" at the same time. 01. Lake Haze - Dog Walking In The Park 02. Copper Green Sedan - Pedestrian (Desert Sound 03. Colony's Stripped & Dipped Edit) 04. In this Paper Trail Pro podcast, we examine the Myth of the Orange Pimpernel. Secret British archives prove that Gusty Spence did not escape from police custody when he was the most wanted Loyalist in the north of Ireland. The police simply released him and helped create the Myth of the Orange Pimpernel. Government Line […] The post Podcast 5: The Myth of the Orange Pimpernel appeared first on Paper Trail .
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a character now long disconnected from his origins in a 1903 novel. The Pimpernel is a mysterious Englishman who uses elaborate disguises to heroically rescue French aristocrats from the guillotine during the French Revolution. Naming himself after a small red flower, the enigmatic hero's identity is known only to a select few. In reality, he is a wealthy English aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney. The Scarlet Pimpernel has appeared in films, TV series, stage plays, spin-offs and parodies. He is, in fact, the original masked hero - the prototype for Batman, Zorro, the Lone Ranger, or any number of other superheroes with secret identities. Yet the Scarlet Pimpernel was, originally, the creation of Baroness Orczy, a fascinating figure in literary history. A Hungarian aristocrat who found fame as an English novelist; a conservative who was nevertheless very progressive in her depiction of female characters; a novelist remembered for a single character but who produced a huge body of work. Orczy was an accomplished writer of detective fiction. Her 'Old Man in the Corner' stories harked back to Edgar Allan Poe's Auguste Dupin, while anticipating the Miss Marple tales of Agatha Christie. Orczy was also the creator of Lady Molly, one of the earliest examples of a female detective. Lady Molly is a detective in the Holmesian mould, with her Watson-like sidekick, solving crimes in her capacity as a detective for Scotland Yard. In this episode I explore the life and writings of Baroness Orczy, following her journey from her childhood home in Hungary to international fame and fortune. I'm joined by Dr Clare Clarke to assess her impact on detective fiction and popular literature more widely. We talk Victorian periodicals, Sherlock Holmes, feminism, and a mysterious murder in Dublin. For shownotes, links, and more, head to [wttepodcast.com](http://wttepodcast.com/scarlet)

Vests give freedom of movement, are a way to showcase fabric, and provide a touch of formality in a casual world. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic play and adventure novel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, set during the French Revolution. It was first produced as a record-breaking play in an adaptation by Julia Neilson and Fred Terry. The play first opened on 15 October 1903 at Nottinghamâs Theatre Royal; it was not a success. But Terry had confidence in the play and, with a re-written last act, he took it to London where at the New Theatre on 5 January 1905 it began a run of 122 performances and numerous revivals. The novel became a runaway bestseller and Fred Terry had a hit, playing the Pimpernel for the rest of his life, on and off. On radio, transcribed in London in 1952 for the Towers of London. Sold to NBC as a summer replacement for The Cavalcade of America July 1- Aug 19, 1952 30m, Tuesdays at 8:00pm. - September 21st, 1952 - September 20th, 1953 30m, Sundays at 6:00pm. The action takes place during the French Revolution, when a secret society of English aristocrats, called the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, is engaged in rescuing their French counterparts from the guillotine. Their leader, the Scarlet Pimpernel, takes his nickname from the small red flower with which he signs his messages. No one except his small band of 19 followers, and possibly the Prince of Wales, knows his true identity. Stars Marius Goring as Sir Percy Blakeney.
