If you've listened long enough to our show and also follow Jen, you probably know that the conversations we invite come in many stripes—thoughtful, timely, fun, encouraging, helpful, educational and inclusive—plus, we're not afraid to veer into some of the deeper stuff. Important stuff that is sometimes hard to wrap our heads around, but if we don't, no change can occur. Whatever we think about gun rights, there are voices to consider who are doing hard work to create a future where kids can safely attend schools, where people won't be shot just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, where mass shootings become a thing of the past. Wherever you stand on the spectrum of this issue, at the end of the day, many polls show that roughly 90% of us agree that we should have stricter gun laws. So we're opening the For the Love Floor to someone who is seeing and hearing first hand from families affected by gun violence, who makes it her priority to educate the public, and puts the issue in front of legislators for increased gun safety. Gloria Pan is the VP of Moms Rising, a group of caring moms who take on the most critical issues facing women, mothers and families. She's the head of their gun safety initiative and works with their membership to accelerate impact on Capitol Hill and state capitols to affect legislative change. She's also been a trusted voice who's spread the message on CNN, with The Los Angeles Times, NPR, and all kinds of media platforms. Gloria and Jen have a discussion around: + The origins of the 2nd Amendment and how the narrative of guns rights proponents has been shaped over the last 50 years + Practical steps toward what we all can do if we want to make our voices heard about this issue and take action toward better gun safety + Hope toward a new generation of young people who are engaged in creating a better future and are paying attention in ways perhaps previous generations haven't This work is not glamorous and can be full of disappointment, as moving mountains can often be. We're grateful to people like Gloria who give us a glimpse from inside the fight, and bring us hope that change can really happen. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes: “Gun violence deaths in this country hovered around 32,000 people a year. That was pretty consistent for many years. Now we're nearing 50,000 and we have so many guns. We have more guns than people in this country.” - Gloria Pan “We consider all moms and families who care about the future of their families and their communities and our country as our constituency. We very much believe that our job is to bring their voices and their concerns to the policy-making table” - Gloria Pan “Not too long ago, issues that are concerning for moms and families were never even talked about in Congress. Childcare, paid family and medical leave, and policies that enabled families to be able to care for our families were never even talked about. But because of the work of MomsRising, our partners out there, and moms and families speaking out, it is now front and center for many lawmakers.” - Gloria Pan "Join us. We're at the tail end of our For the Love of Calming the Chaos series–and if you've gotten a chance to hear the whole series, we hope you've been able to take away some actionable items toward further peace in your life. Our last episode in the series is the perfect capper toward extending that ability to calm the chaos during the disruptive times of our lives, but also during the heartbreakingly difficult times. Our guest this week brings us the very comforting message that simply bucking up or trying to cheerlead ourselves into positivity isn't going to cut it. She gives us permission to actively accept our sadness, and then some tools for how to process it and move it from chaos to a place of peace. Katherine May is an international best-selling author, including the books Enchantment Awakening Wonder in An Anxious Age and Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times. Katherine is going to walk us through not only her own story of a hard winter season she endured, and what she learned, but she'll show us how we can be gentle with ourselves and believe that we deserve peace, no matter the circumstances. Jen and Katherine talk about: When those winter seasons come, just when you think you can't or will never be happy again and the dark pit feels too overwhelming; that's typically when the winter begins to cease and recovery begins Giving yourself grace to believe you haven't done anything wrong if you're still suffering a week, a month or even six months later - the process of unlearning your old ways of life and relearning new ones can be painful and lengthy Not all the lessons we learn come from happiness, they come from sorrow, and how to accept that Chaos doesn't just emanate from choices that we've made or that we've onboarded too many things, but sometimes when tragedy or heartache has found its way to our doorstep. Allowing ourselves to rest and retreat at these times is a gift we can all give ourselves. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! And it seems like everybody else is carrying on and they're all fine. And you are uniquely not fine.” - Katherine May “There's something about how raw you are in that time [of suffering]. So there are moments of intense beauty that are an integral part of this, part of the suffering.”- Katherine May “People who've gone through major winters always seem to look back and say, ‘do you know what? I wouldn't have not gone through it if it meant that I couldn't be who I am now.' You almost appreciate them because change is always necessary.” - Katherine May “You are not alone. You feel very alone, but you are actually part of a massive community of other people who are going through the same thing as you, but maybe for different reasons. And there's this incredible bond between all of you that might not be obvious, but you can trust this space and you can trust your sadness.” - Katherine May Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Enchantment: Awakening Wonder in an Anxious Age - book by Katherine May Wintering, the Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times - book by Katherine May Guest's Links: Katherine's Website Katherine's Instagram Katherine's Pinterest Connect with Jen!: Jen's website Jen's InstagramJen's Twitter Jen's FacebookJen's YouTube
In this episode of Next Level Leaders, Nichole Harrop interviews Jenna Altman on how to set realistic health and fitness expectations for busy corporate women without sacrificing their mental health. In this episode you will learn: 1. The impact of all-or-nothing thinking on women's health and fitness journeys 2. The importance of finding a healthy lifestyle that works for you 3. How all-or-nothing thinking can lead to restrictive eating and weight gain "I want people to feel healthy and strong in their bodies and that it's not to fit a certain mold." Jenna Altman is a women's health and fitness coach. She helps busy corporate women find a healthy lifestyle that works for them. From Jenna: I was once in the busy corporate world, and I struggled with confidence and body image. I was always trying quick fixes to lose weight. I cut out carbs and tried different fad diets, but I learned that it wasn't worth the mental headspace it was taking up. I found a healthy lifestyle that works for me and helps me feel my best. I think it's important for women in the workplace to find a balance between their career and their health. I struggled with this myself when I was working in an office. I was always the person who was focused on my health and fitness, and I would often get comments from other coworkers about how disciplined I was. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. The impact of all-or-nothing thinking on women's health and fitness journeys 2. The importance of finding a healthy lifestyle that works for you 3. In this episode, it is my honour to introduce to you the (amazing people and) filmmakers, Anne Macksoud and John Ankele of Old Dog Documentaries. I first came across them through their film with Joanna Macy: ‘Climate Crisis As A Spiritual Path.' It has reached international audiences with its powerful message on climate change and reconnection and personally moved me. John Ankele started his career as a producer of radio and TV programming in the 1960s, using mass media to empower faith communities advocating for civil rights, protesting the Vietnam War or struggling against apartheid in South Africa. He's also an ordained Presbyterian minister and a student of Zen and Shambala Buddhist traditions who has been involved for many years in interfaith dialogue around contemplative practice and social justice. Anne Macksoud spent 17 years as a teacher of English literature, photography, and music, first bringing documentaries into her own classroom on a regular basis before transitioning into filmmaking herself. She believes that film is a powerful means to an end to open minds and hearts and, as a result, has been working with John since 1985. Together, Anne and John produce documentary films focused on the subtleties of human experience and the complexities of our collective challenges. In this episode, we talk about Anne's and John's formative life experiences and how that brought them together and eventually led them to interview Joanna Macy.We weave in quotes and references to Joanna Macy's life's work as an educator and activist, so we consider her our third guest on this episode. Together, we talk about the value of discomfort and we can all face our current collective discomfort over issues like climate change and pandemic with hopeful hearts. So, enjoy this chance to get to know Anne and John, the work they passionately give to the world, and get familiar with Joanna Macy. I hope that it gives you a deeper awareness of your connection to us, to others and to everything. In this episode, I sit down with Meghan Bonhomme to dive deep into identifying happiness and self-care. Meghan is a professor in Canada, who owns and funds “The Lovely Human School” with a mission to help individuals realize their true potential and take care of themselves. The school offers an eight-week curriculum to provide people with the roadmap to live the life they aspire to. The Lovely Human School began as a result of discomfort, Meghan narrates that she was always a people pleaser who substantially drained “herself”. This insight cleared the door for self-discovery by allowing her to be free of others' expectations. She then integrated the knowledge from books and experiences, which she began to share with others. This unique blend turned into a curriculum, which kept growing with time. The scheduled self-care group attracted people who we're dealing with a variety of issues and wanted to share their experiences. As a result, instead of having to delve through the darkness alone, people were able to move together. People's attitudes alter negatively as a result of challenges, and these changes rob them of their enjoyment and genuine potential. Meghan recommends, identifying the stress or the factor which overwhelms us and changing our perception towards it. She believes that humans are designed to love and share happiness. Meghan also shares an excerpt from Michael A Singer's book "The Untethered Soul," in which the author compares a thorn to a trauma. The simple act of removing the thorn would solve many problems. We, on the other hand, protect the thorn (trauma) because we are afraid of the agony it may cause. At moments of discomfort, we have to sit and reflect on the challenges and the way to navigate around them. "One thing that is in your control, that you can choose is happiness," she continues, quoting Viktor Frankl's book "Say yes to life." Disciplined small daily practices can help us build resiliency and align ourselves to our goals and aspirations. We relate to fact that stress is a reminder of discomfort which equips us into better humans. Let us know your thoughts on Instagram or Twitter @thebetsyreed and feel free to tag us. It all starts there (14:33) Not everybody will like your work and that is absolutely okay! (19:34) Why don't I feel worthy? Sometimes it's good to step back, take a look at the big picture, and ask, "What do I really want from this book project?" My guest today is here to help us figure out the answer to that question. Carolyn Roark is a writing coach, editor, and ghostwriter who helps aspiring authors express themselves beautifully and find the right platform for their ideas. Her clients have included everyone from venture capitalists to restaurateurs to cancer survivors. She finished her Ph.D. at 29 (impressive!) and headed straight into the Ivory Tower. In her bio, she says, "Five years later I stole out a window and never looked back. I loved teaching analysis, theory, and composition, but if I never attend another committee meeting it will be too soon." As a former college professor, I can totally relate! In this conversation, Carolyn helps answer some burning questions, such as: What can a book do for you? How can we maximize the benefits of a book for our personal life and business? What are some obstacles or problems that get in the way of success with book launches and marketing? What are the mindset shifts authors need to make around their book launches or marketing? On today’s episode, I am so excited to have Ashley Beckman here. As a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, she creates custom healing plans for her clients to transform their health naturally. She is here to talk all about epigenetics and the root cause of disease. We will also be talking about detox. In Today’s Episode: [01:19] Ashley is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and an amazing coach. [01:55] Everything is connected and we have to work layer by layer. You can’t separate things out. We need to put all the pieces together, have a long systematized detox, and hit all the layers. [04:03] She got into the epigenetics area because she was so obsessed with food, detoxes, and cleanses since high school. [04:39] Food is medicine. What we are doing every single day can harm us or help us. Food is something we control. [05:57] A huge component of epigenetics is how we detox. [07:41] Ashley kept diving into what food can do, the inflammatory process, and the elimination diet. [08:55] If we don’t ever get to the root cause, we are just removing triggers. [09:43] There are a lot of things that we normalize, that are not normal. [10:32] If you are not getting good quality sleep it is pretty hard to fix anything. [11:59] It is crucial to prime your body before you start attacking. [14:28] Some people are great detoxes and not great rebuilders and others are great rebuilders but not great detoxes. We all detoxify differently. [16:04] Ashley shares her favorite primers, but she also makes sure the sleep and hydration are optimized. [17:42] She is a huge fan of targeted detoxes every season. [19:41] As coaches we all get to a point where we say we are going to keep digging so that we can save the pain for somebody else. [21:27] If you are still struggling, it isn’t your fault, but there may need to be another door to open. [22:23] Ashley recommends prevention. She would much rather clean up and try to prevent something in the future that she doesn’t know could turn into something worse. [23:27] We live in a different world where there is not a one-size approach anymore. [24:32] There are more toxins, more stress, and more health issues. Some bodies handle it better and some can’t. [26:32] With epigenetics you are giving this blueprint of possibilities and we have the control over what we do. We get to pick what outcomes we have. [27:10] Your mindset and thoughts can affect your immune system. [30:38] Share guides with your clients that can lead to easy switches. There are many easy things that are just habits that people need to break and can have a big effect. [32:44] Often there are some minor tweaks that can help a lot of people feel better. Swift change and uncertainty are upon us with the COVID-19 pandemic, so I share a helpful tool and tips to help us all navigate these times. Tool: The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Feel free to switch God with Lord, Universe, or go right into the prayer with “grant me the serenity…” Also feel free to call this a mantra, mediation, chant, or whatever feels comfortable for you. Tips: Accept what you cannot control. This novel coronavirus is here and doesn’t discriminate, especially as it pertains to age as we were first informed. Change what you can; focus on what you can control. Be a part of the effort to flatten the curve; practice social distancing. Stay calm and be a source of support rather than feed into panic and hysteria Control your shopping habits; buy only the toilet paper, paper towels, Clorox, hand sanitizer, etc. that you need. Be mindful of what you focus on and how you spend your time Ideas on where to put your focus Think about all of the things for which you’re grateful Make a list of things you are looking forward to doing when restrictions are lifted Create a digital vision board with Pinterest Connect with your high school counselor or college career center virtually Pay attention to how companies you are interested in working with are responding to the pandemic View job and internships postings on LinkedIn Apply for scholarships Volunteer your time and skillsets to support communities in need Reconnect with family and friends virtually Reconnect with yourself This is also a great time to check out my free goalsetting training, "Achieve Your Goals in 2020: Learn the Art of Goalsetting". A lot of us creatives are resistant to the cultural idea of ‘more is better,’ some even going so far as to view money as a dirty thing. Yet we HAVE to be profitable to continue doing our creative work. So, how do we come to understand the numbers without getting lost in a more-more-more mentality? How do we decide what is ‘enough’ and design a business to fit the life we want? Shanna Skidmore is a business strategist and finance coach who teaches creative entrepreneurs how to build a profitable business that works for the life they want. She combines her background in business, finance, psychology and art to support creatives in defining ‘enough’ and developing a business model that allows them to continue with their craft and make a living doing what they love. Her signature program, the Blueprint Model, offers makers, artists and creatives a step-by-step process for building a business based on their own version of success. Today, Shanna joins me explain her role in bridging the gap between finance and creativity, using the idea of ‘enough’ to measure individual success. We discuss Shanna’s long-term moratorium on social media, and she shares how the experience forced her to build a ‘marketing sundae’—diversifying her strategy to include SEO, email and Pinterest. Shanna describes how she came to design her signature Blueprint Model, her decision to offer the program as an online course, and the Blueprint’s aim to teach strategic thinking. Listen in for Shanna’s insight around sales for creative entrepreneurs and learn to find contentment in where you are right now! www.alexandraharbushka.com Leave a review: http://bit.ly/ReviewSexMoneyandFood PSST. I will be reading your reviews in an upcoming episode so if you have any questions ask away :-) Powerful, Passionate and acting like a Lady with Kelly Youngs Welcome to this of The Sex, Money and Food podcast! What could you do if you truly believed you could create whatever you wanted in your life? What would your life look like? Our guest for this episode, Kelly Youngs of She Is Fierce, has created a brand helping women do exactly that: pursue their biggest, most courageous dreams. On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, Kelly shares her story of leaving a high-powered position in London, starting a family in a small town in Florida and finding the courage and the daring to start the She Is Fierce movement. More About This Show Not long ago, Kelly Youngs was living what she thought was a dream life. She lived in London and worked tirelessly as a high-flying Senior Producer for CNN International. She was married to her English husband and lived near the River Thames. While she loved what she did, something inside of her knew there was more to life than endless hours, and non-stop work. So when she and her husband decided to start a family she suggested they move back to Florida. They left London and headed home to St. Augustine to raise a family. The first few years were fun, she had consulting jobs and was still "in the mix". She was still active in her industry and was traveling for work. But over time that work phased out because she wasn't in the markets where there was real action; there were no media jobs near her. She kept looking around wondering what the heck she was going to do and what she had gotten herself into! She had a two-year old and a baby on the way so she knew they weren't going to move to one of the big markets like Hong Kong or New York. But she also couldn't sit still! She knew there was more for her. After some soul searching and even a pity party, she realized her focus was off: she was focusing on what wasn't possible, rather than what was. She reminded herself she has the potential to create whatever she wants (we all do). With that in mind, she decided to act on an idea she'd had for a long time. Over the years she had wanted to create a community where women could discover their true potential, feel empowered, and accomplish amazing things! She set out to do just that and created the She Is Fierce community. It was a resounding success, women all over the world resonated with her message and it became a movement. Today there are more than 100,000 women in the tribe, and over 20,000 women on Kelly's mailing list. The She Is Fierce movement has held sold out events and has members in eight countries spanning the globe. To continue spreading the message, Kelly has a podcast by the same name in which she touches the hearts, mind and lives of women wanting to live their lives boldly and follow their dreams. Today we talk about her community, but also finding like-minded women in your community whether or not you join the She Is Fierce group. We also talk about her passion and purpose challenge; listen in for all of that and more on today’s Sex Money Food podcast with Kelly Youngs! Tweetable: “Though she be but little she be fierce.” - Kelly Youngs Kelly Answers The Questions Rank the following in order: sex, money, or food? I knew this was coming and I was having a hard time ranking these! I’m choosing family as an overarching thing and all three of those fit. I love being around the table with my family, giving love for food, and I love my husband and it’s also the financial part. What does fierce smell like to you? I do listen to your show so I did cheat and thought this one through! I came up with one that I feel is a good one: the smell of being by water. I live in Florida, I lived in Sydney for a while and even in London we had to be near the (River) Thames. For me it’s a feeling of freedom - having wide open spaces, and having the ability to feel free and feel strong.
