Do you feel like you are on the hamster wheel of expectations this culture throws at your teen? Do you feel the pressure and pull of having them in every sport, activity, and tutor to excel? Is church becoming a point of struggle every Sunday?  Melissa Kruger joins me to talk about all things teen and how to raise them in this culture that is pointing to everything but Jesus.  Melissa is an author and Bible teacher who encourages women as they walk through life and motherhood. We talk about how to enjoy our teens instead of curating their lives and how to allow them space to fail. Melissa shares the three pillars that are the foundation of a home focused on Christ- God's word, prayer, and the Church. We dive into each of these and how to practically walk them out in our homes and with our teens. Melissa ultimately reminds us that as recipients of God's unfailing grace, we get to share that identity with our kids as we guide them through these challenging years.  Connect with Melissa Kruger  Website:  Melissa Kruger (melissabkruger.com) Facebook: Melissa B. Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2023 39:59

One of the most common questions I've gotten over the years is, “Sara, how do I find my passion?” Often this question is followed by some lamenting over the fact that one has not yet found their passion.   Sometimes society tells us that if we are not committing our life's work to something we are passionate about, we are wasting our time or our talent.   I would like to argue that sometimes it's ok to do something you're not 100% passionate about because it provides you security and stability (ie: a paycheck and benefits).   AND, I get it…. Doing meaningful work that is aligned with your passions and gives you a sense of purpose is highly desirable.   AND… the world needs your gifts! So, please don't hold back from sharing them with us. SO, how do you know when to go after what you're passionate about?   How do you determine the thing you want to passionately pursue? How do you know when it's the right time to pivot?   Over the last 20 years, I've spent a lot of time building businesses around work that I'm deeply passionate about - work that gives me a massive sense of purpose. But there have also been moments (even seasons) where I have sat in pretty “MEH” situations in order to strategically plan my next pivot. In this episode, I share a few examples so you can see what this looks like in real life.   Maybe you're ready to pivot right now or maybe you're looking out at a 5-year plan toward your purpose. Either way, I got you - and this episode will give you some great insight. What if your feelings of inadequacy had nothing to do with you? What if they were because you have been conditioned as a woman and a mom that no matter what you do, it will never be enough? Perhaps you have been conditioned to believe that everyone else has it all figured out. Perhaps you are never validated or affirmed as a woman and a mom because society has systematically dismissed and diminished our value, our contributions, and our worth for centuries.   Perhaps those feelings of inadequacy, while very real, are not yours to own.   Perhaps the burden to alleviate those feelings falls on the systems and people who have diminished us. But they don't know that. They don't see that. And until they do, it's up to us to undo their damage.   SO… let's unravel it all so you can step back and see the bigger picture. In this episode, I walk you through 4 things that fuel inadequacy for most women and moms and then a 4 part framework to intentionally and permanently walk away from your feelings of inadequacy and into your worth, your gifts, and your talents Thank you to our sponsors this month: care.com: Get the help you need to make it all work for your family at care.com/book.  Full-Time VA: Check out this free training on how to be a virtual assistant that makes full-time income with part-time hours: thefulltimeva.com/Shameless. Owner Amanda Rush Holmes is also including a bonus free guide for SMA listeners - The VA Kickstarter Workbook! Rachel Luna, author of Permission to Offend, is a highly sought-after international speaker & Certified Master Neuroscience Coach.. Named by Forbes as one of The 11 Most Inspiring Female Entrepreneurs To Follow On Instagram. She is a former US Marine who calls herself a magnet for miracles because despite losing both her parents to AIDS, struggling with eating disorders in her teens, and battling alcoholism and depression in her early 20s, Rachel has never allowed herself to be limited by life circumstances. Instead, she persevered and when she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in the summer of 2019, Rachel tackled it the same way she does everything - with confidence, faith, and love. Through her top-rated podcast, Permission to Offend, and her new book of the same name, Rachel is inviting you to return to your truth, own it, and live fully self-expressed without fear of judgment, rejection, or defamation - so that you can step into your next level of elevation. I had a really hard time relaxing over our holiday break. I knew January was going to be a big month for me in terms of work opportunities and I was feeling some nerves for sure. I kept telling myself to “just relax” until January kicked off, but my anxious brain could not. If you have an anxious brain like me, perhaps you can relate to how foolishly ineffective it is to tell yourself to “just relax”.  BUT… Now that we are IN January and I'm IN these opportunities, I'm having a blast. I'm running right up to some big edges of discomfort as I do new things and I'm having a great time seeing things come together.   As I was wrapping up last week, I had to remind myself: “You are good at figuring out new things.” “It feels really great to challenge yourself by finding new professional edges.” “The high that comes after reaching a new edge is the best.” As I mentioned, I have an anxious brain. I excel in worrying about things before they happen. Sometimes that worry exists for months before an event or life situation and it takes a lot out of me. I have done a lot of work to minimize this worry, but it definitely still creeps in at times.   I love challenging myself because I love - LOVE - the feeling of achievement. But I hate the feelings of worry (sometimes even dread) that can precipitate some of the best moments of my life. One of my top techniques to mitigate this worry is to really sit in the feelings that follow pushing my edges. I do this with skiing, with uncomfortable conversations, with new leadership opportunities, and when I'm working with new organizations - so pretty much anytime I'm doing something unknown or uncertain!   In this episode we talk about how to use these questions to lean into the magic of your new edges: How did that feel? How did you use your skills, gifts, and talents to accomplish what you wanted to accomplish? What does this accomplishment tell you about yourself and the person you are becoming? Cheers to a year of new edges, my friend! ‘Momfluencers' can be great to connect with online and help you feel like you're not alone. However, there comes a point in an influencer's journey when oversharing can be detrimental to one's safety and privacy - especially to a child's. Exploiting their children on social media platforms, like TikTok and Instagram, for content can cause problems for the child later in life. These problems include mental health, and unawareness of parasocial relationships. In this podcast episode, my guest Sarah Adams and I, discuss why it is unsafe to post your children online and how to change your posting in a way that is protective for them.  Sarah Adams is a married, mom of two who lives in Vancouver Canada. She started her TikTok during the summer of 2021 and discussed the state of “sharenting”, child exploitation and minor safety on social media. In this episode we discuss: How social media often builds a false community of mothers.  Why sharing so much on social media can be detrimental and performative. The definition of exploitive and how it relates to content. Keeping your brand while taking children out of it. The messages that being on social media 24/7 sends to our children. The Shameless Mom Academy

I'm in Arizona to lead a training tomorrow. I led part of this training online a while back and an attendee emailed me after and said, “Sara, my team NEEDS your training.” As we talked through what her team needs most right now, I got pretty excited. I knew I could leap right into “Secret Lies” with them and help them shift their mindset and the stories that take up space in their heads in big ways.   If you're anything like - oh - every single human being, you likely walk around all day with different stories in your head. Stories about yourself, your life, your legacy, your past experiences, your qualifications, and your capabilities. So many stories. All day, every day.   As you navigate the world, do you ever stop to think, “Is the story I'm telling myself helping me or harming me?”   Oftentimes, women tell themselves stories that are diminishing and minimizing in a myriad of ways. Things like: You're not good enough/smart enough/thin enough/qualified enough. If you do this, it's ok. Society has conditioned you to do it. It's totally normal. But, it's also totally harmful. Luckily it's avoidable.   In this episode, I help you see how your secret lies might be standing in your way and how you might be able to reframe them in honest, authentic ways that give you a much greater sense of power, purpose, hope, and JOY in your everyday life.   Early in my personal training career, I had a boss shame me in a huge way. It started in his office where he degraded me. But it continued out into the main gym where he made a colleague of mine mentor me in front of all the other trainers - as if I was a brand new, completely inexperienced trainer when I was not. It was an awful - AWFUL - experience. But, having gone through that, I was able to show up for myself as a strong self-advocate a few years ago when someone tried to take me down in a very public way. I was also able to take a stand when my own father tried to publicly humiliate me on my business page about a year ago. If I hadn't figured out how to reframe my secret lies into courageous truths waaaaay back in my personal training days, those incidents would have cost me so much more mental energy and anguish.  This is an invitation to get out of your head and into your truth - your most courageous truth. Let's go.  Link mentioned: Become a member of The Academy! Enrollment is open for a very short time: shamelessmom.com/academy Thank you to our sponsors this month: Full Time VA: Check out this free training on how to be a virtual assistant that makes full-time income with part-time hours: thefulltimeva.com/Shameless. Owner Amanda Rush Holmes is also including a bonus free guide for SMA listeners - The VA Kickstarter Workbook! Today's guest has been a friend for nearly a decade and a guest on this podcast more often than anyone else. In a departure from the wide-ranging conversations we usually have here, today we focus on about a topic she's recently been exploring. There's no better person at explaining concepts to me than my friend Isabel Foxen Duke. You might know her as as a leading expert in the body positivity and body neutrality space. Her work has been seminal in my eating disorder recovery, and she was my introduction into areas including fat politics, intuitive eating, and health at every size. She's someone I trust deeply, so when she told me she was learning about cryptocurrency, I was all ears despite finance and tech being intimidating subjects to me. According to Bloomberg, 85% of Bitcoin owners are men, so I wanted to have a woman on to talk about it. Isabel's patience in explaining esoteric concepts gave me a baseline understanding and sparked a curiosity to learn more. We used my beginner's mind to record a non-intimidating introductory discussion, specifically about the economic problem millennials and Gen-Zers are facing and how Bitcoin can be a potential solution. I ask for clarification often during our discussion so I hope you too might get some of your questions answered. Even if you're uncertain about your interest in the topic, it's not a dull conversation because IFD is one of my favorite people to speak to. Show notes:- Find Isabel on the Web | Instagram | Twitter (for crypto-related content)- Bloomberg article I reference about women and Bitcoin- There are a couple of spots open in my one-on-one creative consulting! #WisdomWednesdays: Achieving Self-Mastery  and Learning How to Slow Down Modern society thrives on productivity. From the moment we wake up, we're already on our phones, preparing for our daily routines and ticking off a long list of tasks to accomplish. This busy lifestyle can steal time for people to contemplate and figure out what they truly want in their lives. While it's easy to give in to the demands of the world, we should always take time to pause and reconnect with our inner selves. In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about the importance of achieving self-mastery. They discuss how to deal with distractions and resist the pressure of becoming hyper-aware all the time. They also talk about how the pandemic is the perfect time to slow down and practice mindfulness. How can we use this opportunity to practice self-mastery? How do we keep reminding ourselves that we do not have to be busy all the time? What should we do to avoid feeling overwhelmed? If you want to know more, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Know the importance of slowing down and taking time to connect with your inner self. Episode Highlights The Process of Self-Mastery Wisdom has something to do with experience or knowledge. Part of this is the quality of being wise or exercising good judgment. Like mastery, earning wisdom takes time. Learning a lesson involves the people and the experiences you had with them. The more familiar you are with the process, the easier it is for you to find alignment within yourself. Choose self-mastery in a society that values instant gratification. The Pain of Boredom as a Rite of Passage When you are learning something new, it can be painful and agonizing. But it's through this pain that you recognize your ability to be resilient. How can you focus on the parts of yourself that need attention? How can you focus on creating openness to feed the part of you that needs filling? Avoid feeding the pleasure zone in your brain tempts you to distract yourself. Remember, you need focus, dedication, and time to learn something new. The Cardinal Sin of Appearing Lazy Being lazy is viewed negatively in our modern world. We always need to appear productive. We now live in a time where apps tell people when to breathe and take a rest. We live in a world where we need to track everything. Gone are the days when we ask ourselves, “What do I want to be doing with my life?” And so we need to slow down and take stock. We can learn from the sloths who are relaxed, contemplative, and focused. Knowing When to Slow Down Working from our homes allows us to have the chance to pause and recognize our autonomy. Unless we use our discernment, we will fall prey to the demands of life. Practices are important because they need us to pay full attention and be present. The greatest challenge would be carrying this practice even as the world reopens. S.L.O.W.: Four Tips from the Little Book of Sloth Philosophy S: Sleep in. This can be hard for most people because we feel rewarded when we wake up early and get everything done. L: Leave your phone at home. Find a weekend where you can choose to let go of your phone. O: Opt-out. Change your attitude by thinking that you do not have to constantly be busy or engaged. W: What's the rush? When you feel overwhelmed, take time to pause and check-in with yourself. Falling Back on the Same Demands Regardless of all the mindfulness tools we have, we all still fall into the same demands of the world. A hyper-aware state can keep you busy, but at the end of the day, you will still feel depleted. It's important to take things more slowly, easily, and do them one step at a time. Give yourself space. Make sure that you're free from distractions to connect deeper with yourself. 5 Powerful Quotes [04:23] “So wisdom... Has to do so much with experience or knowledge. And I believe part of the definition is exercising good judgment. Or it's the quality of being wise.” [09:08] “If you're constantly feeding that pleasure zone within your brain– the circuits that are making you feel good– then you're going to become really good at that you're going to become really good at getting distracted.” [14:26] “There's the wisdom in knowing when to slow down and take a day off. And so the reason behind the sloths is their mindfulness and action. They're contemplating, they're deliberate, they're relaxed, and they're focused.” [17:18] “I feel that unless we can make friends with the time that we have, and if we can utilize it in a way that's going to serve our highest good, we're going to continue to fall prey to the busyness, the ungrounded frenetic energy that life can sometimes bring us.” [23:43] “For me, it's easier to take things one step at a time, to do things little by little, to incorporate one thing at a time so that I feel like I'm still doing something for myself, doing something for my highest good. But at the same time not overwhelming myself in the process.” This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market  Get 25% OFF of your first order AND a FREE gift! www.thrivemarket.com/radicallyloved   This episode is brought to you by LOVEVERY Designed by experts for your child's developing brain, For free shipping off your first order visit:   www.lovevery.com/loved    Enjoy the Podcast? Authenticity, Words, and Manifestation: The Importance of Just Being Yourself  with Tessa Tovar Just being yourself requires a certain level of vulnerability not all of us are willing to show. Vulnerability is often mistaken for weakness, and nobody wants to be perceived as weak. As a result, we hide our authentic selves. But no matter how we choose to express ourselves, we have to go back to the reasons behind what we do. In today's episode, Tessa Tovar shares what it means to be authentic. We also talk about the importance of words and how we say them and the key ingredient to manifesting our wants and desires. If you want to know more about the importance of just being yourself, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode Understand what being yourself means through authenticity. Discover the power of words and how they help us reach our highest vibration. Learn more about manifestation and the importance of taking action. Sign up at com, and I’ll send it right away!   Episode Highlights What Does It Mean to Be Authentic? To be authentic means being honest and fully who you are. You're also unapologetic about it. To be authentic is to be grounded and vulnerable. Using filters in your photos does not mean you are not authentic. Using filters and dressing yourself up are ways of expressing yourself. You may think twice about just being yourself and doing what you want because you may want others to view you as authentic. How Important Is It to Be Viewed as Authentic versus Just Being Yourself? It all comes down to how much you care about what other people think of you. If you’re just being yourself, you won’t care if anybody else thinks you’re authentic. Try understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing. Use make-up and filters if they make you happy, or don’t if you feel like you are putting on a mask. Explore both sides of the coin. The Power of Words It’s important to mind your words and how they can contribute to reaching your highest vibration. It is important to state our intentions clearly so that you're affirmative and positive. When expressing yourself, take a pause, breathe, and choose your words with intention and mindfulness. Vibrating at Your Highest Vibrating at your highest means being your most honest, real, and authentic self. There is also a semblance of vulnerability when vibrating at your highest. We need to think about how we can utilize words that continually make us feel empowered. In doing so, we can communicate more profoundly and build bridges rather than using words to argue. How you’re saying something and responding to something also matters. What Is Manifestation? Manifestation is the idea that what we think, say, and do matter in creating the life that we want. To manifest is to create and magnetize something towards us. We can't determine everything that happens to us, but we do have the creative capacity to bring about change. The main ingredient of manifestation is a commitment to action. 5 Powerful Quotes [13:50] “If you are truly showing up and being true to yourself, you're not going to care if anybody else thinks you're authentic.” [14:54] “Always bring it back to yourself and understand the ‘why’ of what you're doing and why you're doing it.” [22:25] “Words don't have to come out so quickly and so rapidly. We can take a moment to think about what we want to say from a place of mindfulness.” [26:49] “Vulnerability is coming just from a place of being completely honest.” [33:15] “If we believe that we can bring something into our life, if we believe that there is a way out of a not-good situation, then there is a way to think, say, and do something about it.” About Tessa Tessa Tovar is a yoga and meditation teacher and a holistic health coach. She received her degree in Human Communication with honors at the University of Southern Oregon in Ashland. It was at Southern Oregon University that Tessa found and developed her passion for the practice of yoga. In 2017, Tessa received her certification in Health Coaching.
