Seamlessly monitoring people's temperatures in real time was essential during the height of the pandemic, so Jau Huang took his award-winning photo editing AI tools and adapted them into a COVID health monitoring solution deployed in hotels, malls, and workplaces across the US. Jau Huang is the Founder and CEO of CyberLink, a company that's grown from a small startup into an international powerhouse for multimedia products and facial recognition tools for private businesses. Originally, Huang developed a popular virtual makeup applicator called YouCam, and then transformed it into a facial recognition software called FaceMe that could pair with temperature cameras for accurate identification and health monitoring of subjects, even when masked. The solution consistently ranks as one of the most accurate in the world. On the podcast, Jau shares his journey to adapting his tech for health monitoring and discusses how AI is transforming industries including banking, retail, and employee management.

Summary: My tenacious interlocutor returns to discuss his lively Street Epistemology Discord server engagements that occurred in the interim. I do some more "messaging" than normal in this one, likely in response to them asking me questions. Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/HQWeRF0OBG4 Note: I found in interesting how "importance" of the claim was being viewed differently by both parties here. The students seem to be using it as "needed" while I seem to be viewing it as "fantastic." If only I had asked something like, "Are you saying that, the more necessary a claim is to a person, the more likely the attestations of others from a long time ago are true?", or something to that effect. IL2 at one point asks, "What happens to me?," as if that should be a factor in assessing the truth of a claim. I was later reminded about a discussion I had about differences in adjective meanings, like we might see with a word like "important" or "extraordinary". In their view, it seems, if a claim is "important" to them personally (like "Jesus rose from the dead," it's less likely someone would lie or be mistaken about the claim, and therefore you can accept what they stated as true to a high degree of confidence. Whereas from my perspective (and perhaps others who might be more skeptically-minded) we see "importance" as a biasing factor to control for; the more important or impactful one might find a claim to them personally is a reason to apply more—not less—scrutiny to the supporting reasons. Check out Pinecreek on YouTube and his more advanced "Flying Man" ( https://youtu.be/2ZNiCpeF_Jg?t=4789 ) example, which is further along than I was here with my off-the-cuff car metaphor in 2019. I'd like to see this idea of how we might be using adjectives differently explored further in future SE discussions. Summary: After sharing a few emails to coordinate, Caleb and I agreed to meet at a location of his choice to revisit his God belief and discuss our previous encounter. Watch video(Part 1 of 2) here: https://youtu.be/IXzCdauGc_8 While it took me some time to upload this second talk with Caleb (recorded December 2018), I'm glad I finally did. I think our second talk shows how much growth Caleb and I experienced over the years since our first encounter in 2014. Even as I watch this encounter today I can see improvements since this chat. This can be both exciting and frustrating, particularly when people may have only watched older examples, form a view on SE, and then miss out on the improvements we've developed over the years. In short, never stop watching SE videos—we're evolving rapidly! This idea of the "totality of the circumstances" (or in other words "there's just so many reasons for my belief that shaking a few reasons won't affect my overall confidence that the claim is true") is very common, albeit frustrating when you encounter it. If a reason serves to bolster one's confidence, the realization that a reason cannot be justified to one's own standard should have a corresponding impact if it is no longer a viable option in the mix. Summary: Kevin is an inquisitive former Catholic who still wears a cross despite identifying as an agnostic atheist. We cover a variety of interesting topics including certainty, openness, free will, and aspects of morality. I'm half-jokingly sub-titling this an "inquisition" because of the rapid-fire questions and constant interruptions that permeate our talk. Kevin is a very bright and confident individual with good dialogue skills that will most likely improve quickly. Thank you, Kevin, for making me think over both of our talks. Can an open-minded person be sure there is no God? Summary: Kevin returns for a second chat (our first talk was never uploaded) to explore the morality of eating meat. Interestingly, Anthony becomes the primary interlocutor and the two explore the quality of their reasoning. I particularly like this chat because it shows how you can use Street Epistemology on your own claims with a willing participant like Kevin here. Summary: Justin wonders if it's possible for people to act in a moral fashion without thinking that a God is real and what's really driving that "compelling force." Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/fxC0S4go3j8 guid·ance /ˈɡīdəns/ noun 1. advice or information aimed at resolving a problem or difficulty, especially as given by someone in authority. Three questions for Justin (and for you): "Why exactly do you think that you would be any different?" "How would I act any different if I didn't think God was real?" "Why would I want to be less moral than I am today?" Note: I didn't notice until editing (or I probably would've said something on camera after the interview) how some of the background action happened to enhance certain aspects of this talk. For example, the golf cart (car) as we discuss the challenges of communicating, the various religious symbols on Justin's jacket, the seemingly lost older couple who stroll into the shot, the green wagon with quiet wheels, the landscaper picking up the leaf and tossing it in the trash. As far as I can tell, it really did just happen to work out that way. Oh! There was one small thing I intentionally snuck into the background--let's see if anyone notices it. Note: If memory serves, the person with the bear was selling flowers or something (as it was Valentine's Day) and we had a brief chat about how she might sell more flowers if she walked around with the bear rather than stood next to it. If you look closely, it seems to help get people's attention. A "Pre-Methodological" Discussion Series | Part 4 of 4 Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/9ahfNpYbaTk Summary: After creating a pie chart of reasons for thinking his Christian worldview is objectively true into categories grouped by importance, Shane and I explore the attributes of his reasons and how they interrelate or possibly influence each other. Since all four of our talks cover important concepts that set the stage for exploring the quality of Shane's reasons and reliability of Shane's methods, I've dubbed this series "pre-method" or "pre-methodological" as a result. It's my hope that these four talks will resonate with practitioners of Street Epistemology and they can see the potential this line of questioning has when it comes to exploring deeply-held beliefs. I am hopeful a discussion like this will one day break through the noise and truly help people reconsider how they decide to interact with someone else's claims, reasons, and methods. Identifying the relationships and dependencies of our "categories of reasons" is a critical path people should routinely consider. Thanks to The Conru Foundation for supporting Street Epistemology International. Note: Despite my best efforts, I was unable to conduct a 5th chat with Shane. I realize this may frustrate some viewers, but felt it would still be valuable to release these four talks to the public. The primary purpose of my videos has always been to show others how to do Street Epistemology themselves. A "Pre-Methodological" Discussion Series | Part 1 of 4 Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/Szwmbc3ygQM Summary: Shane and I discuss the difference between objective and subjective truth as a thought experiment before comparing it to his religious truth claim. Since all four of our talks cover important concepts that set the stage for exploring the quality of Shane's reasons and reliability of Shane's methods, I've dubbed this series "pre-method" or "pre-methodological" as a result. It's my hope that these four talks will resonate with practitioners of Street Epistemology. Thanks to The Conru Foundation for supporting Street Epistemology International. Note: Despite my best efforts, I was unable to conduct a 5th chat with Shane. I realize this may frustrate some viewers, but felt it would still be valuable to release these four talks to the public. I should have apologized to them for that. Additionally, it dawned on my that referring to it as "that little incident" could be seem as an attempt to diminish the incident. I can't say for sure, as my memory of late has been decreasing, but I think the spirit I was aiming for the word "little" was "brief" or "short". Summary: Christina returns for a fourth talk where we initially set out to explore her antinatalist view that it is unethical to bring a person into the world without consent, but quickly explore her personal position on end-of-life options. Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/LKF_-dFEv0c Wikipedia': "Antinatalism, or anti-natalism, is a philosophical position and social movement that assigns a negative value to birth. Antinatalists argue that people should abstain from procreation because it is morally bad." My first three talks with Cristina were in my view, inconsequential to this topic, and will likely never be uploaded. We are hoping to meet again soon on camera to revisit the morality of anti-natalism, as I regret not having spent more time on that. Cristina and I worked out many of the details surrounding the release of this video and I hope she feels comfortable keeping our channel of communication open should she wish to talk again. I also think this metaphor could have been problematic because she earlier said she was studying music, likely something she greatly enjoys. Suggesting (even remotely) that she might have to give up music to progress forward I think was a gaffe on my part. Sorry also about the noise. While we both likely understand that I have no control over the background noise in this spot, I am sorry for the challenging audio. Something that comes with filming in public, I suppose. After attending part of my talk on Street Epistemology to the Secular Student Alliance (SSA)(where roughly 1/3 of the attendees were Christians), Jacob stopped and asked me to interrogate his claim that Jesus is historically real and is his Lord and Savior. We spent most of our time figuring out how much of an impact the truth of evolution (if it could be explained and demonstrated to his satisfaction) would have on his high degree of confidence and exploring whether or not he is using a consistent standard for accepting intelligent design and dismissing evolution. He also seems to think that reality is an opinion. We end up using a group of middle schoolers to illustrate our point. The hat I'm wearing was a gift from my friends when I gave a talk in Oslo, Norway. Mistakes: We probably should have also spent some time defining "consciousness" and "frequency". Recorded w/Go-Pro. Summary: Emily is an atheist (and possible nihilist) visiting San Antonio from New York who was 100 percent certain that a God does not exist. The non-belief scale became a little confusing as we bandied between the 0 percent and 100 percent to refer to absolute certainty. We both seemed to understand each other at the time, however. Hopefully that's not too confusing for others. Mistakes: I'm unsure why my phone started playing music at the start of the talk. That was not a ringtone but a video advertisement on Twitter. Stupid phone. Grr. Recorded w/Go-Pro. Edited w/PowerDirector. The views addressed here are mine and mine alone, and are not necessarily shared by members of my family and friends.
