Deborah Kado is a geriatrician who believes her field is misunderstood. Her interest in the science of aging began with a childhood encounter in a nursing home but recently resulted in intriguing work in which Kado linked microbes in the gut to vitamin D metabolism and poor sleep. Kado refuses to blame aging alone for health problems, advocating for better care regardless of age. It's never too late to strive for better health, Kado tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? What if mitochondria weren't just energy engines — but conscious beings guiding your survival and evolution? In this episode, Dave Asprey sits down with Zach Bush, MD, to uncover a radical new science of cellular intelligence. Together, they reveal how your mitochondria, microbiome, and genetic memory do far more than support survival—they actively shape consciousness, drive healing, and accelerate human evolution. You'll discover why chronic disease, fatigue, brain fog, and emotional trauma often trace back to lost cellular communication—and how restoring that network can unlock radical resilience, deeper energy, and true longevity. Through the lens of soil health, vibrational biology, light frequencies, and ancient microbial wisdom, Zach Bush shows why the future of biohacking demands reconnection to the deeper intelligence already alive inside you. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How mitochondria act as conscious messengers—not just energy factories—and why that changes everything about health and aging • Why rebuilding gut microbiome intelligence strengthens immune function, brain health, and emotional resilience • How disrupted cellular communication fuels chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, and premature aging • How emotional trauma imprints onto genetic expression and triggers mitochondrial collapse • Why viruses and bacteria serve as evolutionary partners—not enemies—and how they upgrade your biology • How “cellular safety” activates healing, regeneration, and peak human performance • How carbon cycles, soil health, and light frequencies repair DNA and extend human lifespan • Simple daily practices that rebuild cellular coherence, boost energy, and reconnect you to your innate intelligence This conversation will rewire how you think about health, disease, and human potential—giving you the tools to upgrade your biology at the deepest level. **Check out Zach's exclusive offer for The Human Upgrade listeners at https://intelligenceofnature.com/ and use code ‘DAVE10” for a discount!** SPONSORS - ARMRA | Go to https://tryarmra.com/ and use the code DAVE to get 15% off your first order. - Apollo Neuro | To get an Apollo wearable, go to https://apolloneuro.com/Dave and save 15%. Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 658 Are your probiotics helping you heal your gut or are you just wasting your money? Tina Anderson, Co-Founder of Just Thrive, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 658, to explain why most probiotics are not real probiotics, how spore-based probiotics heal the gut microbiome, why gut health is essential for your mental health and brain function, and what the healing protocol for the gut consists of. "99.99% of probiotics die by the time they get to the intestines. If a probiotic needs to be refrigerated in order to stay alive, it wouldn't even survive on the store shelf which means it could never survive your body temperature. Spore-based probiotic has this endospore shell around itself which allows it to be a very hardy organism and survive the journey from the mouth through the gastric system into the intestines." - Tina Anderson 20% Off Just Thrive Probiotics There are hundreds of brands of probiotics on the market, but as you've probably already discovered, they are not all equal. Just Thrive® is the first 100% spore-forming probiotic and antioxidant supplement that arrives 100% alive to your intestines that's available in the retail market. Just Thrive® contains a patented strain called Bacillus Indicus HU36® – bacillus strains are abundant environmental organisms that are a normal part of the human microflora. This strain, Bacillus Indicus HU36®, produces antioxidants/ carotenoids (the nutrients that give red peppers and tomatoes their color) in your intestines where they can be best absorbed by the body, making it one of the most absorbable forms of antioxidants on the market. These spores have been successfully used to enhance digestive health for more than 50 years! 20% off with code "JOSH" In This Episode, Tina Anderson Uncovers: [01:30] Gut Imbalances Are The Cause of Disease Tina Anderson Just Thrive - 20% off with the code JOSH 360 Tina Anderson | Gut Health: The New Probiotic Strain That Changes Everything Why people have been taking more control over their health since 2020. Power Quotes From The Show Microbiome As a Dynamic Ecosystem "Because the microbiome is so unique people think that they need something individualized for them otherwise there's no hope of changing it. It's actually not true. It's a very dynamic ecosystem and it's highly personalized. There're dietary recommendations that would be the same for everyone." - Raja Dhir Optimizing Gut Microbiome "Everyone's optimizing for something else. Everyone has different methods and until everyone's looking at the same information set, using the same methods, it's really hard to compare the quality of different data sets. The better way to do it is to functionally understand what your microbiome is doing. Is it making a lot of organic acids? Does it have a lot of organisms that have genes that we know are positive for fiber degradation or converting dietary nutrients or are inflammatory or help to rebuild the gut barrier? This is the level that we're at. We're looking at really clear features and trying to look at the prevalence of those features in different people vs their absence in others." - Raja Dhir Healthy Bowel Movement "Most people just learn over life to cope and assume that bowel movement an irregular, unpredictable, and even potentially something that requires force. You should have little to no strain, ease of expulsion, manageable to no amounts of persistent gas, you shouldn't have bloating, and you shouldn't have many sensitivities to diverse plant matters, especially roughage. If you go through that simple checklist and then compare that to the Bristol stool chart, and see your stool quality coming out (the color, the shape, the texture, the hydration( those are your best indicators. Anything that you do beyond that is about optimizing. This is the day-to-day thing you should ask yourself because that's your first signal for how the whole system is functioning." - Raja Dhir Links From Today's Show Seed - 35% off your first month's supply of DS-01 Daily Synbiotic with code "JOSH" Mind Pump Media Ara Katz Paul Chek Shop the Wellness Force Media Store Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' breathwork.io BON CHARGE - Save 15% with the code "JOSH15" MANNA Vitality - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Mendi.io - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Cured Nutrition CBD - Save 20% with the CODE "WELLNESSFORCE" PLUNGE – Save $150 with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' HVMN - Get 20% off your Ketone IQ order with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – Save 10% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' NOOTOPIA - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" ActivationProducts – Save 20% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” NEUVANA - Save 15% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - Save $25 on your order with the code "JOSH25" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ ION - Save 15% off sitewide with the code ‘JOSH1KS' Feel Free from Botanic Tonics – Save $40 when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40′ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase BREATHE - Save 20% by using the code “PODCAST20” Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' NEUROHACKER - Save 15% with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATER - Save 33% on your first order with the code "JOSH33" M21 Wellness Guide Wellness + Wisdom Community Leave Wellness + Wisdom a review on Apple Podcasts Raja Dhir Instagram Facebook Twitter About Raja Dhir A life sciences entrepreneur, Raja Dhir has unique expertise in translating scientific research including scaling up both facultative and strict anaerobic organisms. Communication between the digestive system and brain is much more intricate than previously thought. The digestive epithelium is laced with sensors that monitor the contents of the gut, reporting back to the brain, stimulating appropriate hormones and digestive action to guide motility, chemistry, and absorption. This network is frequently referred to as the 'second brain' because of the dense neurophysiology at work. Recently it has been hypothesized that dysfunction in the gut-brain axis may be the basis for several immune and neurological disorders, suggesting that this neurological system may be an excellent drug target. Nancy Thornberry, CEO and Founder of Kallyope (Cal-EE-O-pay) describes the gut-brain axis, its role in digestive signaling, her company's novel drug discovery methods, and potential drug targets that may lead to innovative therapies for human health originating here in the second brain.

This time, he's sharing exciting research about a probiotic strain that's tackling the gut-brain axis, called Bifidobacterium longum 1714™.Kiran says, “One really important message that I want people to really wrap their heads around and understand when we're talking about the gut-brain axis is, of course, the gut. A healthy gut is incredibly supportive to the brain. It supports the brain in a number of really important critical functions like recovery, for example, or production of serotonin and dopamine and all these important neurotransmitters, but on the other end of the spectrum, an unhealthy gut is not only not supportive, but it's arguably one of the most toxic things for the brain.”Big topics covered in this episode include:Basic mechanisms by which the gut microbiome can influence neurochemicals and brain inflammationThe gut-brain connection as it relates to stress coping and mental healthHow cortisol and interleukin 6 drive stress response and inflammation in your whole bodyVariables that can cause a breakdown or dysfunction in the psychobiomeTherapeutic interventions, including psychobiotics that can help correct gut-brain axis dysfunctionKiran's great at explaining the science so you clearly understand what the studies mean and can apply new knowledge to your own biology. This discussion with Dr Carolyn Berryman, although focused on fibromyalgia, is relevant for anyone living with, or interested in what it is like to live with, a chronic condition.Carolyn brings her considerable expertise as a physiotherapy clinician, teacher and researcher to the discussion. We begin our chat by describing the symptoms of fibromyalgia that can include widespread, persistent pain, sleep disturbances, fatigue and sensitivity to sensory events, like smells. The causes of fibromyalgia, sometimes described as a "mysterious syndrome”, are unknown which can make it difficult to diagnose and treat. However, Carolyn does enlighten us about what we do know about fibromyalgia, the various treatment approaches and what is going on in the research space.Of great interest to me was the part of our discussion focussing on the mind-body connection both in terms of neuroplasticity - ongoing pain can change the wiring in the brain - and the gut-brain axis - how gut health impacts immune function and how an imbalance in that area might be a contributing trigger for fibromyalgia.I very much enjoyed Carolyn’s generous sharing of her expertise, the clear empathy she has towards people suffering with fibromyalgia and the practical advice she gives for those people.LINKS MENTIONED IN THE EPISODEDr Berryman’s Researcher Profile, University of Adelaide: https://researchers.adelaide.edu.au/profile/carolyn.berrymanFibromyalgia Support, South Australia: https://www.facebook.com/fibrosa.com.au/HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.Follow me on Instagram @amanda_wellbeing_podcastFollow my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/amandaswellbeingpodcast/?modal=admin_todo_tourIf you could rate and review the podcast on iTunes, that would be super helpful.Purchasing a book from my website is an easy way to support the podcast too. Ray Heath is a Psychology teacher with a personal interest in gut and brain health, often referred to as the gut-brain axis. Ray talks to us about how we can use the science of psychology to be the best that we can be. We explore the influence of emotions on memory and look at different holistic approaches to health. Ray explains that the mind, body and gut health is all interconnected. Nature verses nurture is a very interesting topic, along with thought regulation and links to gut health and managing anxiety. We delve into microbiome and how it contributes to regulating our stress response. The role that the gut plays in a person' psychological well-being is huge. We discuss menopause, HRT and how gut health can improve symptoms during this time. Ray explains how gut serotonin can regulate digestion, immunity and the nervous system. Finally, we explore habit change and how we can address this as individuals. This episode inspired me to change the way I eat and I’m excited to share this topic with others. Guest Jeanne Petrucci and I discuss the connection between our mood, our health and the gut, including: * Promising research on how our gut impacts our mood and vice versa* What it means for the gut to be “leaky” and its relation to inflammation and the immune system* The gut and the increase in food sensitivities * What to feed the gut for your health and cancer prevention* The role of fecal transplants* What pregnant women and parents of young children need to know about the gutJeanne Petrucci is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and the founder of Living Plate (livingplate.org), an organization which seeks out the latest scientific research on nutrition and then shares that information through educational and culinary programs. Enjoy!
In Episode 10 I look scope inside the human microbiome and its relationship with our gut and brain. We are a host to trillions of microbial cells, 10 times more than our own human cells, so it's in our best interest to keep these microorganisms happy and thriving. This synergistic relationship can influence our emotional state, energy levels, nutrient absorption, immune function, neurotransmitters, b vitamins, and much more.
Dr. Katania and Kathy Enking BSN, NTP discuss the way the gut and the brain communicate in the Gut-Brain Axis, the essential role that the gut microbiome plays in this communication and how to feed and keep our microbiota happy!
