Lyddesign: Tobias Ingemann. Lyddesign: Tobias Ingemann. Soundtrack: Mikkel Bøgeskov Andersson & Tobias Ingemann. Redaktør: Emil Rothstein-Christensen. DRredaktør: Anders Eriksen Stegger. Produceret for P3 af MonoMono. Kilder: Blood And Power, John Foot - 2022. Fascismens Italien, Flemming Larsen - 2010. This week, join Simon on a deep dive through time into the evolution and possible origins of neurodiversity. From the ancient wisdom of neurodivergent shamans to the brilliant minds of Einstein, Darwin, and van Gogh, we'll uncover the hidden stories of how neurodiversity has been shaping our world in unexpected ways. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. We'll also explore the dark side of how society has often misunderstood and marginalized those who think differently, and how the fight for neurodiversity acceptance is still an ongoing battle.1. David is a historian of the Italian far-right and Europe editor for Jacobin. His writing has also appeared in the New Statesman, New York Times, Guardian, Independent, New Left Review and Tribune. He's joined in conversation by John Foot, Professor of Modern Italian History at the University of Bristol, and author of Blood and Power: The Rise and Fall of Italian Fascism. Now, several months on, David and John discuss how things have panned out for the new fascist government, both domestically and on the international stage. bookhausbristol.com/shop

On Saturday the Giro d'Italia rolls out of Pescara on the Adriatic coast and, as ever, The Cycling Podcast will be there to document every stage, every polemica and every violation of the sacred codes of Italian gastronomy. In this episode, Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Brian Nygaard present our comprehensive preview of the first Grand Tour of 2023: who is riding, where the race is going and – if you'll indulge our uncharacteristic speculation – who is likely to be in pink when the peloton arrives in Rome. We hear, too, from our sometime Italian historical and cultural guru, John Foot, about the state of Il Bel Paese in 2023. There are also interviews with one of the men masterminding Remco Evenepoel's Giro bid, Soudal-Quickstep coach Vasilis Anastopoulos, and the journalist who, whatever happens on the road, will, as ever, be the undisputed crowd favourite of the next month, Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
A first, but certainly not the last, journey to Italy, the homeland of Ultras: with Richard Hall, founder of the Guardian Sports Network blog The Gentleman Ultra - a treasure trove of Italian soccer stories - and host of Inter Milan's English-speaking club podcast, we travel first to the 1990s, when Ultra fanculture first became visible across Europe as an alternative to Hooligan and other supporters cultures, and then try to explain the fascination of Calcio from Italy for all soccer fans, the stadium experience in Italy today, and the life of an English-speaking fan at the heart of one of Italy's great clubs. There is a lot more ground to cover on Ultras and Italy, of course - politics, power dynamics, and violence that now takes place almost exclusively outside of stadiums. Richard's experience is that of a fan himself. Some books and articles linked below deepen or reframe his impression - but they do not take away from the fascination he felt, and is feeling, when coming in touch with the culture in Italy's curvas, the terraces behind the goals in Italian stadiums. Todays guest is historian, research director and author John Foot. John's responsible for arguably the greatest Italian football book in English, 'Calcio. The History of Italian Football' as well as other titles such as 'Pedalare! Pedalare! The History of Italian Cycling' and the recently released 'Blood and Power. The Rise and Fall of Italian Fascism'. This was an early morning chat before coffee so apologies if we got a World Cup year or two wrong. ##Please don't forget to follow, share, and rate and review the podcast. It all helps to spread the word of the podcast and of Calcio and is greatly appreciated. ## Thanks for listening. You can find John on Twitter at @Footymac You can find Frank @SerieA_Aust on Twitter. Historian John Foot discusses the movement in 1960s Italy to reform and eventually abolish the psychiatric asylum system. Specifically, he'll be focusing on the work of Franco Basaglia, whose antifascist politics drove him to radically alter the way in which mental health treatment is managed in Italy. John Foot is a historian and author based at the University of Bristol. He is the author of numerous books on Italian history and most relevant to the discussion today he is the author of The Man who Closed the Asylums, published by Verso books in 2015 and recently co-edited Basaglia's International Legacy: From Asylum to Community with Tom Burns.
In his latest episode, Frank interviews John Foot, author of the seminal book 'Calcio: A History of Italian Football', one of the must-have books on the Italian game in the English language. Frank and John discussed the origins, history and the process behind his book 'Calcio', the referees influence on Italian football, controversy in Italian football, how writing the book changed his perspective on certain clubs and players, the media and personalities in Italian football, Italian football's missed opportunity, how different would the book look if it was written today, the divide between Italy's regions through football, the political and government influence on Italian football, a possible second Calcio book - fingers crossed - and more.
John Foot is a professor of Modern Italian History at the University of Bristol in the U.K. He is an expert on the life of Dr. Franco Basaglia, the visionary psychiatrist whose lasting impact on the Italian mental health system continues to inspire the world. We will explore Professor Foot's journey into this avocation, which was sparked by the chance viewing the film San Clemente (1982) while on a trip to Trieste.Professor Foot is author of Franco Basaglia: the Man who Closed the Asylums. He is a co-editor of compendium of essays about the impact of Trieste in other counties that emanated from a symposium held in Oxford in 2018. It is titled Basaglia's International Legacy: From Asylum to Community. We also explore in this interview the plan to translate into English a book that was originally published in 1968, L'istituzione negata (The Negated Institution), which had seminal impact on advancing the Basaglian revolutionary school of thought in Europe and South America. That one man could have such profound impact on advancing a human-centered, community-based system of care for people living with mental illness is astounding. This interview will provide some insights into Basaglia, who is relatively unknown in the English-speaking world. The pandemic has brought public health into focus while also serving as a magnifying glass that clarifies existing inequalities relating to class, race and gender. In this final instalment of the series, we'll hear about how illness is produced and managed under capitalism while trying to reimagine a world in which care for the ill is a central feature of our politics. This episode was produced by Aron Keller, James Roadnight, Sarah Vowden, Matt Huxley, Penny Grennan, Charlie Clarke, Hanadi Rammu with contributions from Ellen Clifford, Vijay Prashad, Ellie Bradford, Ros Reynolds-Grey, David Tovey, Prof. John Foot and Lynne Segal.

Italy was full of confidence in 1990. The country was alive, at the cutting edge of sport and fashion and with a booming economy. About to host the World Cup, the nation's cyclists were on the cusp of a resurgence too. After three years of foreign victors at the Giro, an Italian led from start to finish. Gianni Bugno took the pink jersey in the opening time trial in Bari and defended it all the way to Milan – only the fourth man to lead the race all the way through, and only the second after Eddy Merckx in 1973 to actually do it in the maglia rosa. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at those heady days of 1990 and remember the song that defined the summer. No, not Nessun Dorma, the BBC's World Cup theme, Notte Magiche, or Magic Nights. We break down Bugno's victory, compare and contrast him to football's poster boy Roberto Baggio, assess the state of the Giro at the time, look at Italian cycling's re-emergence and ask how important a role the discovery of EPO as a performance-enhancing drug played in Italy's early Nineties renaissance. We hear from author, historian and expert on all things Italian, John Foot, and from Bugno himself. There's another delve into The Cycling Podcast's back catalogue to discuss the so-called 'Zoncolan of the South', wine of the day, plus musical contributions from Amaraterra (who perform our Giro theme song, Cozze), and François Thomazeau. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW... A rest day at a grand tour usually means a trip to the launderette and a round of press conferences for The Cycling Podcast but tomorrow we look back to an incredible day in 2010 when almost a third of the peloton got in a big break to L'Aquila and Richie Porte announced his arrival as a stage race contender. Welcome to the first stage of Our Giro, a series of podcasts by Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe celebrating the best the Giro d’Italia and Italy have to offer. With the Giro d’Italia postponed because of the coronavirus crisis, The Cycling Podcast is embarking on a virtual grand tour instead. Starting in Budapest and finishing in Milan, our route will more or less follow that of the real 2020 Giro but with a few diversions thrown in along the way. Over the course of three weeks we will tell stories old and new about the Giro. We’ll have interviews and familiar voices and we’ll capture the flavour and sounds of Italy without leaving home. We hope it’ll have all the elements of our usual grand tour coverage, just without the racing. In this first episode, we look back at the 1946 Giro, the first after the Second World War which saw the rivalry between Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi intensify, to see if there are any parallels between that race and the one that follows this coronavirus crisis. We speak to authors and historians John Dickie and John Foot, who also happened to be Daniel’s Italian professors. There’s also the introduction of some of the regular features we’ll be bringing to you over the next few weeks. We hope you join us on this virtual journey and enjoy the ride. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. The title music for Our Giro coverage is called Cozze by Amaraterra (https://soundcloud.com/amaraterra-london) . “Apart from capitalism itself, is there any cultural and economic manifestation in the world today as ubiquitous, powerful and globalized as football?” John Foot assesses two new studies of the game; just over ten years ago, Elizabeth Strout introduced readers to a frustrated maths teacher called Olive Kitteridge. The novelist speaks to Roz Dineen about bringing Olive back onto the scene; the famously over-the-top cookery show ‘Two Fat Ladies’ last graced our television screens twenty years ago. Anna Girling celebrates the legacy of this unlikely union ‘The Age of Football: The global game in the twenty-first century’ by David Goldblatt‘Ultra: The underworld of Italian football’ by Tobias Jones‘Olive, Again’ by Elizabeth Strout See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Willem Haak and Wesley Victor Mak take you on a tour through the Bel Paese, the country of the mediano, the trequartista, the bomber and the ever-lasting support of the tifosi, but also the home of bribery, financial trouble, bankruptcies and weekly trainer dismissals. This week, we're joined by John Foot, writer of the Italian football bible 'Calcio', and learn about his views on the connections between Italian football and the country's political system.
“We have made Italy; now we have to make Italians,” Massimo d’Azeglio famously stated. Has football made Italians? And how do the country’s anxieties play out on the pitch? Goldblatt talks with historian John Foot about Italian football and its relationship to politics — from Mussolini’s use of the sport as a tool of fascism, to Silvio Berlusconi bringing Italy to the top of the football world, to current anxieties about immigration and national identity — and the failure to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 60 years.
In 1978, Italy passed a law to shut down its Asylums. The asylums were ageing, horrfying institutions that weren’t so great at looking after people. Two people at the centre of the change were Franco Basaglia and his wife, Franca Ongaro Basaglia. Historian John Foot accidentally discovered this story at a documentary screening, and wrote a book on them. He explains why what they did is such a big thing. Links from this episode: John’s book is available in all the places. The documentary that moved John was called San Clemente, by Raymond Depardon and Sophie Ristelhueber. If you’re interested in how this ‘deinstutionalisation’ works with current mental health services, one of the best round ups is from the US (covering their system, but similar dilemmas). Of course, it’s by John Oliver. Songs from How to Close All of Italy’s Asylums:The Solist in the Living Room — Cold War KidsLa Strada — Nino Rota8 1/2 — Nino RotaParis Mood — Tom Waits
As Raízes Italianas do Movimento Antimanicomial (2007).

At the start of the second week of this year's Giro d'Italia, we take the long view of cycle sport in Italy with John Foot, professor of modern Italian history at University College London. His book Pedalare! Pedalare! tells the fascinating story of how Italy fell in love with the bicycle and how cycle sport took a central role in national life. Continue reading →
