Marking the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth, this is the third podcast in Raymond Bisha's four-part survey of Naxos' project to record all 18 versions of the composer's 11 symphonies. With movements performed by the Bruckner Orchester Linz and the ORF Radio Vienna Symphony Orchestra, plus annotations from music scholar Robert Simpson, this instalment features movements from Symphonies 6 and 7.
Inside this Episode with host, Mitch Hampton Christoph Schülren, one of the guests to whom I was so kindly introduced by pianist Beth Levin, will be the first time on our podcast that a musician whose professional career is devoted to the art and practice of conducting has been featured. I thought it indispensable for many reasons to feature him: musical conducting is ubiquitous in many styles of music yet is perhaps little understood or appreciated outside of the worlds of music. I was most happy with our discussion: he is quite articulate and able to get into the details of his craft in a relatable way to a most general audience and he has quite an intriguing biography as can be gleamed from our episode. Christoph Schlüren's Biography “Uniting the well-known with the unknown” Conductor, Music Researcher,Musical Mentor, Music Editor, Program Adviser, Chamber Music, Coach Christoph Schlüren studied with the late Sergiu Celibidache from 1981 to 1996. Other strong influences were the composers Anders Eliasson, Pehr Henrik Nordgren, and Per Nørgård, the musicians Paul Zukofsky, Sándor Végh, Murray Perahia, Juha Kangas, and many more. As a conductor (Symphonia Momentum, Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein, St Michel Strings Mikkeli) Christoph Schlüren led first performances of works by Peter Michael Hamel and Anders Eliasson. Some of the lesser established composers he particularly favors are:Heinz Tiessen, Eduard Erdmann, Anders Eliasson, Jean-Louis Florentz, Paul Büttner, John Foulds, Vittorio Giannini, Nicolas Flagello, Giorgio Federico Ghedini, Peter Mennin, Bernard Stevens, Felix Draeseke, Heinrich Kaminski, Max Butting, Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling , Heinz Schubert, Philipp Jarnach, Emil Bohnke, Matthijs Vermeulen, Harald Sæverud, Georges Migot, Eduard Tubin, Vagn Holmboe, Douglas Lilburn, Robert Simpson, Per Nørgård, Boris Tishchenko, Ketil Hvoslef, Pehr Henrik Nordgren, Tristan Keuris, Halvor Haug, Peter Michael Hamel, John Pickard, Håkan Larsson, and Juan José Chuquisengo. He combines their works in dramaturgically correlated programs with the established great composers. Read more about conducting He is a music researcher, author and journalist as well (Frankfurter Rundschau, Gramophone, Tempo, Fono Forum, Crescendo, Neue Musikzeitung, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Deutschland Radio, etc.) and works as main editor and researcher on the rare music scores series Repertoire Explorer. Christoph Schlüren wrote the first basic introduction into Musical Phenomenology as it was created as a universal approach to music by Sergiu Celibidache developing further on. As a program adviser he collaborates with orchestras and conductors (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Münchner Philharmoniker, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Arcos Orchestra, Münchener Kammerorchester, etc.; Lavard Skou Larsen, Juha Kangas, José Serebrier , Mario Venzago, Christoph Poppen, Israel Yinon, etc.), and created commissions for the Musica Viva series of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Anders Eliasson's Fourth Symphony, Cynthia Lee Wong, and Onute Narbutaite, as well as arranging the world première of Artur Schnabel's Third Symphony). In May 2023, the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill received Royal Assent after two years of debate in Parliament. The new Act will strengthen the statutory duty already imposed on English higher education providers by previous legislation to secure freedom of speech within the law. Arif Ahmed, a former philosophy professor at Cambridge University, has been appointed as a Director overseeing free speech at the Office for Students, informally known as the 'Free Speech Tsar'. Free speech is one of several fronts in the so-called culture wars. Ahmed has been at great pains to say that his office, and he, will be politically neutral. The idea is to protect the right of academics to express their views, wherever on the political spectrum those views fall. But is there a role for legitimate gatekeeping of academic speaking opportunities? And is there a principled way of making decisions about when, if ever, academics should be prevented from speaking on the grounds that what they say might be harmful? Gerald Lang, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Leeds, has been trying to dig under the headlines to get at the ethical concerns underlying this debate. You can read Gerald Lang's blog on this topic, and a reply to it by the philosopher Robert Simpson, here:https://peasoupblog.com/2023/11/soup-of-the-day-free-speech-and-academic-freedom-with-contributions-from-gerald-lang-and-robert-simpson/You can find out more about the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act here:https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2023/16You can read Arif Ahmed's first speech as Director for Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom at the Office for Students, or 'Free Speech Tsar', here: https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk/news-blog-and-events/press-and-media/transcript-of-arif-ahmeds-speech-at-kings-college-london/Ethics Untangled is produced by the IDEA Ethics Centre at the University of Leeds.Twitter: @EthicsUntangledFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ideacetlLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/idea-ethics-centre/

Here's an episode of Holy Smoke to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Anton Bruckner later this year. This embarrassingly eccentric genius was, perhaps, the most devoutly Catholic of all the major composers – but you don't have to be religious to appreciate the unique consolation offered by his gigantic symphonies. On the other hand, it's hard to appreciate the unique flavour of Bruckner without taking into account the influence of the liturgy on his sublime slow movements and what the (atheist) composer and Bruckner scholar Robert Simpson called the 'calm fire' of his blazing finales. If you make it through to the end of this episode, you'll hear exactly what he meant. Produced by Patrick Gibbons

Robert Simpson is the brains behind the re-invention of the door security chain. This door security device when applied IF attacked automatically sounds an alarm to alert neighbours and passers-by but at the same time sprays the attackers with a UV-based forensically identifiable marking fluid that stains skin and clothes for weeks allowing police an extended window of opportunity to identify those who attempt to force entry into your home. Currently working with Innovate UK Edge to enable R&D regarding a newly designed electronic version that once manufactured here in the UK can be globally commercialised.“Forensic Chain of Evidence” is installed at an entry point around your home and when in use, if an unlawful attempt is made to force entry through the door it will automatically sound a high decibel alarm to alert neighbours and passers-by but at the same time spray the attacker with a TOTALLY NON-TOXIC UV based forensic marking fluid. This stain remains on clothes and skin for weeks and is easily identified by police using simple UV (CSI) torches.Police forces nationally have utilised his idea in a number of safeguarding settings including domestic violence, repeat burglaries, witness protection, race and hate crimes so to ease the fear of crime and with no recorded offences being perpetrated at any of the target hardened addresses where the device is installed and police have commended its crime reduction capabilities.Timestamps:[1:20] How did you get started?[3:30] Star Trek? Tonight, we complete the Hammer Quatermass trilogy (albeit out of order) with The Quatermass Xperiment (a.k.a. The Creeping Unknown in the US) is a 1955 British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, based on the 1953 BBC Television serial written by Nigel Kneale. Produced by Anthony Hinds, one of the of 37 films he made for Hammer. Hinds wrote a number of films under the pseudonym 'John Elder' which he adopted after Her couldn't afford a screenwriter for The Curse of the Werewolf). It is directed by Val Guest, writer and director of the Cannon and Ball vehicle, Boys in Blue and Confessions of a Window Cleaner. (and of course director of Quatermass 2) The film stars Oscar Nominee, Brian Donlevy in his fist of 2 portrayals as the eponymous Professor Bernard Quatermass. Richard Wordsworth, Who feature as a sinister taxidermist with James Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock's second version of The Man Who Knew Too Much, as well as appearing in British TV dramas such as Huntingtower and The Tripods, and notablble in other Hammer films - The Revenge of Frankenstein and The Curse of the Werewolf, plays the tormented astronaut Carroon. Jack Warner plays Inspector Lomax (insanely famous in his time as the titular Dixon of Dock Green appearing in 432 episodes on tv from 1955 to 1976) Margia Dean plays Judith Carroon. Dean only passed away, sadly, this June. We also briefly see Thora Hird in one scene as 'Rosie'. Thora lived so long and did achieved so much, she was the subject of 'This is your Life' Twice. The Quatermass Experiment was originally a six-part TV serial broadcast by BBC Television in 1953. It was an enormous success with critics and audiences alike, later described by film historian Robert Simpson as "event television, emptying the streets and pubs". Among its viewers was the forementioned Hammer Films producer, Anthony Hinds, who was immediately keen to buy the rights for a film version. Nigel Kneale also saw the potential for a film adaptation and, at his urging, the BBC touted the scripts around a number of producers. Kneale met with Sidney Gilliat to discuss the scripts but Gilliat was reluctant to buy the rights as he felt any film adaptation would inevitably receive an 'X' Certificate from the British Board of Film Censors. Hammer's offer met some resistance within the BBC, with one executive expressing reservations that The Quatermass Experiment was not suitable material for the company, but the rights were nevertheless sold for an advance of £500. Kneale was a BBC employee at the time, which meant that his scripts were owned entirely by the BBC. He received no extra payment for the sale of the film rights. This became a matter of some resentment on Kneale's part, and when his BBC contract came up for renewal he demanded and secured control over any future film rights for his work. Kneale remained bitter over the affair until the BBC made an ex-gratia payment of £3,000 to him in 1967, in recognition of his creation of Quatermass. Synopsis Ask a serious music lover to name major figures in 20th century music and it's likely the names Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Bartók will crop up. But in addition to those Austrian, Russian, and Hungarian composers, a lively group of Italian modernists were also active throughout the 20th century – only their names and music are not so well-known. One of them was Goffredo Petrassi, born in 1904. Petrassi became one of the leading figures in a group of Italian composers that included Luigi Dallapiccola, Alfredo Casella, and Gian Francesco Malipiero. This group tried to compensate for Italy's almost total preoccupation with opera by concentrating more on instrumental pieces. Petrassi's own musical influences range from the Italian Renaissance music he sang as a young choirboy in Rome to the works of abstract painters like Jackson Pollock that he viewed when visiting America. Petrassi's largest body of work was his eight Concertos for Orchestra composed between 1933 and 1972, but in his final years he turned to chamber works, such as this “Autumn Sestina” completed in 1982, scored for six instruments. When asked where the “Autumn” in the title came from, the 78-year-old Petrassi responded: “Perhaps it's got something to do with my age.” Music Played in Today's Program Goffredo Petrassi (1904 - 2003) — Sestina d'autunno (Compania; Andrea Molino, cond.) Robert Simpson - once described as "Britain's most important composer since Vaughan Williams", and "one of the century's most powerful and original symphonists" - was a man of integrity, a champion of lesser-known composers, and a man who lived his own life by strict principles: pacifism, socialism and what he called "anti-pessimism". This week, in Simpson's centenary year, Donald Macleod looks back at the life and work of Robert Simpson - from his childhood in the Salvation Army, to his experiences as a conscientious objector during the Second World War. He explores Simpson's writings on music and on life, and his time working at the BBC, before his break from the Corporation and from this country. Along the way we'll hear from Simpson's considerable body of work, which included no fewer than 11 Symphonies and 15 String Quartets. Music Featured: Symphony No 4 (II. The prolific British composer Havergal Brian wrote 32 symphonies. His last was completed in 1968 when he was 92. Just before completing his Symphony No. 32, perhaps as insurance in case he died before finishing it, Brian wrote a shorter work as kind of coda or capstone to his output. He gave it a Latin title, “Ave atque Vale” – “hail and farewell” in English. In a letter to Robert Simpson, a fellow composer and friend, Brian said he didn’t intend this work as any kind of confession or comment on his life or music, but a purely abstract “last word” from him as a composer. “Ave atque Vale” received its premiere performance on today’s date in 1973, some six months after Brian’s death, in a studio recording by the London Philharmonic intended for a BBC broadcast that never materialized. Brian’s music was seldom performed during his lifetime. He enjoyed some initial success in the early years of the 20th century, and a revival of interest in the 1950s and 60s, but since then his late Romantic, restless and often melancholic music, a quirky blend of Elgar and Mahler, is heard most often via recordings sponsored by the Havergal Brian Society.
