Last month, my 14-year-old son came home from school with a book in hand and excitedly said, “Dad, you've got to read this book!My son has never said anything like this to me before, and I was immediately intrigued. I picked up the book, a graphic novel, and it took me in immediately. It was engrossing and profound. It was at times hilarious and at other times utterly heartbreaking. Overall, it was a superbly relatable human story that describes a period in the life of an American-born Chinese boy that was true to his experience and that, simultaneously, opens a door to a Chinese mythical world. The author is Gene Luen Yang (https://geneyang.com/), and I was thrilled to learn that his New York Times bestselling, award winning, and critically acclaimed book, American Born Chinese, has been made into an eight-part miniseries on Disney. The miniseries has an all-star lineup the likes of which blows my mind! The cast includes Academy Award Winners Michelle Yeoh and and Ke Huy Quan (also known as Jonathan Ke Quan) and two of my favorite comedians, Ronnie Chieng and Jimmy O Yang! And throughout this interview, you'll get to learn from Gene who is a cool, kind, and deep-thinking person. I am confident you will appreciate him as much as I have. So, I am releasing this episode to coincide with Chinese New Year. A hearty Gung Hay Fat Choy to all who celebrate! And what a great way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon by listening to Gene share his story and the story behind the story of American Born Chinese. Kavin Jay – Comedians, Malaysia's REAL Journalists Kavin Jay is one of Malaysia's funniest men, recognised as such by the Netflix special he was invited to record in 2018, titled ‘Everybody Calm Down'. He is also one of Malaysia's most original and ‘real' comedians, driven to his art by a very unique set of circumstances. Here, he talks to Chuang about his journey to comedy, evolving along the way to become a true storyteller, much akin to a journalist, though often braver – and definitely funnier. She knew she wanted to be an author from the day she first read A Wrinkle in Time when she was a child, and she grew up inspired by authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Philip Pullman, Garth Nix, and Dennis Lehane (the ultimate master of plot twists). It has always been her dream to become a published author, and it is her hope to expand into multiple genres of fiction. http://linktr.ee/authormaphipps Rebecca is an American author who resides in the bucolic hills of West Virginia in the heart of Appalachia with her rugged husband, two hilarious daughters, and a small congress of animals. As you can see, she's fond of pretty words and has been since preschool. This is also probably why she wanted to be an author after reading Catherine Called Birdy when she was ten. This was the book that taught her how to say cuss words in a creative manner. Rebecca has two published short stories in the science-fiction and urban fantasy genres and plans to write full-length projects in the near future. She one day hopes to be able to add "multi-genre author" to her list of career titles. https://lnk.bio/rebeccarede
Peng Dang is a standup comedian based in Texas. Peng moved to the US from China in his twenties, speaks absolutely impeccable English, and more importantly, tells jokes like a local pro. I find his sets funny, educational, and wholesome. I'm not sure if a comedian wants to hear their jokes described as “wholesome,” but I mean that as a compliment. We talked about how his English got to be so good, what life was like for him in Alabama, Atlanta and Dallas, how he honed his comedic skills, his views on "freedom of safety" on China's streets, the infamous Tony Hinchcliffe incident, and more. The comic hosts a night of killer comedy from his pals, including Michelle Wolf, Jimmy Carr, Steph Tolev, Jeff Ross, Dave Attell, Ian Edwards, The Goddamn Comedy Jam, Josh Adam Meyers Jessica Kirso, Ronny Chieng, Burr doesn't exactly make it difficult to follow him and it helps that Michelle Wolf, arguably the only watchable act, is terrific form. Wolf effectively utilises her 10 minutes with a provocative set about the hypocrisy of yass queening, both in America and abroad. The comedian's delivery doesn't skip a beat and her set sticks to the purpose of sucha showcase by spotlighting a distinctive point of view. The British-Irish comedian Jimmy Carr comes up next with an act that starts off strong but quickly devolves into second-hand embarrassment-inducing territories. Carr seems to evidently be of the opinion that risque material equals funny jokes. But as is evidenced from his yawn-inducing set, both those things aren't exclusive to each other. It doesn't seem to be getting any better when Canadian comedian Steph Tolev takes the stage; her material is so unforgettable that for a second, I was convinced that it was a mistake that Burr ended up putting her in the lineup. To be fair to Jeff Ross and Dave Attell, the duo atleast make an effort, albeit in their old-men-who-give-no-fuck type of roundabout way. But unfortunately, their material is a bunch of one-liners assembled next to each other that work better as inside jokes than punchlines at a comedy fest. At one point, the duo bring up Burr for their famed “roastmaster” segment and the resulting exchange is funny enough to register but by no means is memorable.I'll say this much about Ian Edwards: he appears to be heading somewhere. The comedian does an ingenious bit on Michael Jackson that I quite dug and another on The Handmaid's Tale that is nothing short of brilliant. The trouble is in the fine-tuning of both these bits, which suffer from an evident lack of both polish and delivery. Still, for someone clueless about Edwards comic voice, the set acts as an apt entry point and for me, Edwards felt like the only discovery of the lineup. The last three acts of Bill Burr Presents: Friends Who Kill are perplexing to say the last and almost entirely impossible to wrap your head around. Actually, there's no point beating around the bush — it's an absolute trainwreck. Worse, it's a trainwreck three times over. It goes downhill with Jessica Kirtsen's set; the comedian's delivery and material seem to be at odds with each other. And then, it gets significantly worse when Josh Adam Meyers and his band The Goddamn Comedy Jam takes the stage to deliver a musical comedy piece, which is certainly the lowest point of the show. Even kids who didn't study anything for their exams would have fared better. There's no way that Burr was in his right mind when he curated this set. Actually, none of this would make sense even if Burr was held at gunpoint and asked to come up with a lineup of 10 comics without warning. At some point, Ronnie Chieng appears on the stage to sing Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream'. If you are a normal functioning adult, then at this point, your soul would have left your body wondering if this is what Bill Burr thinks is funny, then the world is surely under threat. Because by now, it's not only disappointing, underwhelming, or even boring. It's outright★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

On this week’s episode, Daily Show senior correspondent Ronnie Chieng talks about his journey to his first Netflix stand-up special, Asian Comedian Destroys America! Born in Malaysia, Ronny grew up in Singapore and began doing stand-up in Australia, where starting comedians quickly put together hour-long sets to perform at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. So when Trevor Noah tapped him to join the Daily Show in 2015, Ronny moved to New York and faced a very different comedy scene in a very different country. Four years later, Ronny’s joke examines American consumerism from the perspective of an outsider who has embraced American values, for better, and for worse. Joe Wong joins Diana and Teen to talk about the social value of Asian American comedy. It's been a kind of golden era -- from Ali Wong's continued breakout success to Ronnie Chieng's recent Netflix comedy special -- but what role do our best comics play in an era marked by social disorder and antagonisms? Joe Wong offers his view of this exciting but high-stakes era of Asian American comedy. These three dudes are Ronny Cheng, Nazeem Hussain and Andrew Saunders, (no link – man of mystery). They are funny, funny, funny and they joined me live onstage during the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. We talked about the process of becoming famous comedians, which all of them are living through right now, and the topic of racism was raised and deftly handled once or twice.
