Moxie was the first mass-produced soft drinks in the United States dating back to 1876 when it was created by a doctor. Root Beer was invented by a pharmacist named Charles Hires, who introduced the beverage in 1876 with real sassafras, something today considered too dangerous and therefore replaced with artificial flavor. Dr Pepper was introduced by a pharmacist named Charles Alderton and his famous 23 flavors in 1885. Coca-Cola was introduced by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886, who used a small amount of cocaine. In 1893 another pharmacist introduced Caleb Bradshaw Pepsi, the later name for the pepsin and kola nut extra in the product. In 1929 Charles Grigg introduced 7UP, which contained lithium citrate, a naturally occurring alkali metal with psychotropic (or mood altering) effects.Fig Newtons, Graham Crackers, Corn Flakes, and Grape-Nuts were all introduced as health supplements. In all of these cases we are observing beverages and food-substances that were originally sold as tonics, medicinals, and the like, while today they are anything but. What was originally sold as medicine is today sold as liberty, and what would certainly never be sold as a health tonic today is also never accused of causing health issues. The British Journal of Sports Medicine reported back in 2017 the “overlap between the consumption of added sugars and drug-like effects.” Cheese is likewise known to be just as addictive, something linked to casein and casomorphines produced during digestion. The study, published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, examines why certain foods are more addictive than others. Researchers identified addictive foods from about 500 people who completed the Yale Food Addiction Scale, designed to measure if someone has a food addiction.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Uncle Brad and Jules tackle the luxurious Brandy Alexander – a cocktail so smooth, it practically wears velvet pajamas. This creamy classic may have emerged from the shadow of its lesser-known (but equally delicious) parent cocktail, but it's earned its place as a dessert drink worthy of year-round appreciation. Uncle Brad starts us off with the traditional Brandy Alexander, made the proper way with cream – because while our friends in Wisconsin might insist on ice cream, we're sticking to the original recipe that put this cocktail on the map. Then Jules shakes things up with her signature Root Beer twist, proving that sometimes the best innovations come from thinking outside the liquor cabinet. Uncle Brad digs into the fascinating origins of this sophisticated sipper and reveals the identity of its mysterious parent cocktail. Whether you're looking to cap off a dinner party or simply want to treat your taste buds to something special, the Brandy Alexander delivers dessert-level indulgence in liquid form. Just remember: this is a nightcap, not a noon-time refresher... actually, don't let us dictate policy, enjoy it whenever you'd like. Brandy Alexander Glass: Coupe Garnish: Nutmeg Directions & Ingredients In shaker glass add: 1.5 oz Cognac / Nice French Brandy 1.0 oz Dark creme de cacao 1.0 oz of Heavy cream Ice Shake for 20 seconds or until it's too cold to hold Strain into your coupe glass Garnish with fresh nutmeg Alexander the Float Rootbeer Alexander Float A boozy, creamy, spiced summer dessert cocktail Glass: Pint Glass Garnish: Nutmeg or shaved chocolate Ingredients: 2 oz Cognac 1 oz crème de cacao 1/2 oz heavy cream 2 oz root beer (chilled) 1 scoop vanilla bean ice cream Freshly grated nutmeg (optional) Instructions: Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to your glass Shake the brandy, crème de cacao, and cream with ice and strain into glass Top with root beer—slowly! Let it fizz. Garnish with a dash of nutmeg or a shaved chocolate float. TIP: Thoughtful question from @Susu_51295 about the differences between syrup, shrub, and oleo sacrum – essential knowledge for any home bartender looking to elevate their craft. A gray overcast day makes sense while we in Canada celebrate our ever increasingly anarchonistic holiday "Victoria Day". Traditionally this is known as the May two four weekend. Two four being common slang for a case of beer. While I don't really drink anymore, I'll be going out to resupply my stock of Root Beer, as I seem to have slightly regressed a bit back into childhood. Join Uncle Brad and Jules as they brave the notoriously face-contorting Malort. Listen as these courageous libation explorers transform Chicago's favorite liquid punishment into surprisingly palatable cocktails, including Uncle Brad's recreation of the Swedish Seed that might actually make you want to drink Malort (trust him on this one, it's like Root Beer for grown-ups). Discover the twisted history of this infamous spirit, from its Swedish origins to its Chicago cult status, and learn how this beverage—described by critics as tasting like "grapefruit rind steeped in gasoline"—became both a beloved cultural touchstone and the city's favorite practical joke on unsuspecting tourists. We'll track Malort's journey from immigrant staple to near extinction, and its phoenix-like revival in the 2010s that cemented its status as Chicago's most masochistic rite of passage. Whether you're a Malort veteran with the facial scars to prove it or a curious newcomer wondering "how bad could it really be?" (spoiler: bad), this episode promises equal parts history lesson and liquid courage. Listen in and discover why sometimes, the worst-tasting traditions are the ones we cherish most. Swedish Seed Glass: Coupe Garnish: Orange peel Directions & Ingredients In shaker add: 1.0 oz Malort 1.0 oz Root liqueur 1 egg white 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice 1.5 oz brown sugar honey syrup 2 dash angostura Dry Shake for 30 seconds Add ice and shake for 20 seconds more Double Strain into coupe Add orange peel garnish TIP: Question form Austin Elliot Strickland – Which is better, syrups or liqueurs? We're back.. i dont know what's been going on with us, but we're back and sadly we have some shit to talk about. Over the weekend multiple restaurants were put on blast & rightfully so. Stone Cellar Bistro in Arvada went after mom's on Mothers Day Weekend and the community has come for them. Poor behavior in the restaurant by staff & worse behavior after the fact online... a tutorial on what not to do really. Then we talk about the second story breaking in the Denver Food Community, Grateful Gnome's ownership has been outed for disgusting behavior towards staff & guests alike. Kip & CB talk about both circumstances before shifting gears to positive food talk & recapping New Haven pizza tour.If you want to support local restaurants who treat guests & staff properly and kindly.. you should be checking out Annette this weekend as they partner up with Theo Adley & the team from Marigold out of Lyons. Then before we get out of dodge, we talk about the New Haven pizza tour Kip ran through over the weekend and a conversation about Root Beer, Birch Beer & Cream Soda.. We really touch on everything this episode.Shoutout to our sponsors of the pod - Meraki Brands Cannabis, Award Winning Flower & Vapes that are taking over the community in Colorado. Stephan Sterns Jail House Calls – Call 8: Puppies, Root Beer & the Shadow of Madeline Soto's Murder While his mother tends to a dog giving birth, Stephan talks about root beer barrel candy, commissary price hikes, and snack strategy. You'd never guess this is a man accused of murdering a 13-year-old girl. But that's what makes this call so unsettling. It's quiet. Casual. And profoundly disturbing. Because in the background of this light conversation is the death of Madeline Soto — a tragedy no one can face directly. This is what emotional dissociation sounds like.
