Most coaches think they're having conversations with their athletes. Marcia Reynolds says they're mostly just talking. In this episode, JP Nerbun sits down with Marcia Reynolds — executive coach, neuroscience researcher, and author of Coach the Person, Not the Problem — to unpack the science of what makes a coaching conversation actually transformational. Marcia explains why telling athletes what to do almost never leads to lasting change, breaks down the critical difference between coaching and mentoring, and shares a three-step pre-conversation practice that changes how you show up before a single word is spoken. If you coach athletes, lead a staff, or are navigating a difficult conversation at home — this one is for you.Chapters(02:11) Intro(03:56) Marcia's journey to coaching(06:26) Why telling people doesn't work(09:41) Coaching vs. mentoring(12:26) Coach the person, not the problem(18:41) The worst assumption a coach can make(21:11) Three steps before every conversation(26:11) Building the daily practice(29:11) Presence as the foundation(35:41) Reflective inquiry over questions(40:11) What coaching gives back to the coachTOC 3-2-13 Quotes | 2 Questions | 1 ResourceYour fast-track to this episode's most actionable ideas."You have not lived their life. In a world obsessed with quick fixes and automated answers, Dr. Marcia Reynolds joined The Ash Said It Show to deliver a powerful wake-up call for the 2026 workplace: stop trying to solve the problem and start coaching the human being in front of you. As the legendary author of Coach the Person, Not the Problem, Dr. Reynolds explains that the coaching landscape has undergone a radical evolution since her first edition. Today's leaders aren't just facing tasks; they are navigating a "wicked" landscape of digital fatigue and systemic complexity where the old scripts no longer work. This second edition has become an essential survival guide because it shifts the focus from external performance to internal capacity, ensuring leaders can thrive amidst constant disruption. The greatest hurdle for any high-achiever is the "fix-it" reflex—that magnetic pull to give advice when a client or employee is spiraling. Dr. Reynolds challenges us to resist this rescue impulse, noting that when we provide the answer, we actually rob the other person of their own cognitive breakthrough. By staying disciplined in Reflective Inquiry, a coach acts as a psychological mirror, allowing the client to see their own thinking patterns. This requires a level of Coaching Presence that many struggle to achieve. The primary barrier is often the coach's own ego; the need to prove value by being "brilliant" creates mental noise that drowns out the person we are trying to help. True presence is about "emptying the cup" and trusting that focused attention is more transformative than the best advice. Growth, as Dr. Reynolds famously teaches, lives in the Discomfort Zone. This is the precise, shaky moment when a person's old mental model begins to crack but a new one hasn't yet formed. She reveals that the secret to navigating this tension is the balance of high challenge and high support; by identifying the "Aha!" breath or the sudden break in eye contact, a coach can gently push a client toward a breakthrough without triggering a defensive retreat. This human-centric philosophy is also the ultimate tool for radical inclusion. By stripping away assumptions and focusing on the individual's unique internal narrative, leaders can navigate diverse identities and lived experiences with genuine empathy rather than relying on stereotypes or surface-level labels. As we look toward the future, the rise of Generative AI has actually made the human element of coaching more valuable than ever. While an algorithm can generate a perfect problem-solving script, it cannot sit in the "messy middle" of a breakthrough or sense the heavy silence of an unspoken fear. Dr. Reynolds reminds us that the next generation of leaders will be defined by their ability to be uniquely, provocatively human. On this episode of The Ash Said It Show, the message is clear: in an era of artificial intelligence, your most competitive advantage is your ability to truly see, hear, and challenge the soul of the person standing before you. In this episode, Brian Miller is joined by Dr. Marcia Reynolds, former president of the International Coaching Federation and globally recognized thought leader on emotional intelligence and coaching presence. Together, they explore how neuroscience explains co-regulation—the subtle emotional exchange between coach and client that determines trust, safety, and transformation. Marcia shares practical ways coaches can regulate their own emotions, influence the energy in the coaching space, and trigger the brain chemistry that opens clients to deeper insight and growth. Key Highlights Coaching presence is emotional, not just cognitive. True presence isn't about paying attention—it's about radiating curiosity, compassion, and care that the client feels. Energy precedes words. Before a coach says anything, the client's brain detects safety or threat based on the coach's tone, body, and emotional state. Co-regulation is constant. We always regulate to the person with the most emotional influence in the room—often the coach or leader. The brain's chemistry shapes trust. Compassionate connection releases oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, which calm anxiety and open creativity and insight. Judgment, fear, and impatience break presence. These emotions start in the body before the brain and must be noticed, released, and replaced intentionally. Takeaways Regulate yourself first. Your emotional state sets the tone. Enter sessions grounded, curious, and compassionate. Safety is felt, not declared. Saying "you're safe here" doesn't build trust—your calm presence does. Track with curiosity. Listen beyond the story for values, fears, and contradictions that reveal transformation points. Choose your energy intentionally. Notice where emotion shows up in your body, breathe, and return to curiosity and care. Lead with "big light." Like Marcia's mentor said, your job is to model presence and emotional maturity—even when others don't.

The Mountain Top For Men (formerly The Chick Whisperer):

Co-Host Dr. Marcia Reynolds (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/assertive) When it comes to making our desires and grievances known, we as men can easily find ourselves landing on one side or the other of two extremes. Either we get angry and yell about it, or we bottle it all up and do nothing. Well, in this episode I'm joined by returning guest Dr. Marcia Reynolds. We kick things off by talking about how so many guys find it difficult to be assertive without either rocking the boat or creating some big, hairy misunderstanding. Even worse, most of us dread coming off like some sort of male 'Karen'. And I mean, we're all sick of feeling judged by others, so that's the last way we want to come off. Fortunately, there are simple ways to mitigate those situations, which Marcia happily explains. First off, our brains are naturally designed to judge everything to protect us, so how do we know how and when to act on those judgments when necessary...especially if it potentially involves someone else's behavior modification? And how can we be assertive without lapsing into passive aggression? On that note, what exactly does 'passive aggressive' actually mean? And what is the difference between toughness and assertiveness? Do women want us as men to be tough as nails all the time? I mean, is there zero margin for error there? And how should we be more assertive--or less so--within the context of our own relationship with a woman? Ha...that's a tricky one. How can arrogance cloud our effectiveness at being assertive? How does Hanlon's Razor factor into all of this? And the million dollar question...how do we measure how assertive to actually be in any given situation? Take a look at the whole catalog of Masterclasses For Men and so much more at https://mountaintoppodcast.com MESSAGE TO GREAT MEN EVERYWHERE === The content in this show is NEVER generated by AI. In this episode of Bridging the Gap, Matt Reiner welcomes Dr. Marcia Reynolds, a figure in emotional intelligence and coaching. Marcia shares her journey from a challenging adolescence to becoming an authoritative voice on emotional intelligence and leadership. She emphasizes the critical role emotions play in decision-making and explains how our brain's primary function of protection often leads to quick, potentially faulty judgments. This perspective is great for leaders seeking to foster better decision-making within their teams.A key takeaway from Marcia's insights is the importance of employing a coaching approach when dealing with individuals making decisions based on fear. Rather than offering logical advice, reflecting their thoughts and asking insightful questions can lead to deeper understanding and more meaningful actions. She cites a study from Spain, which demonstrated that individuals gain more insights and possibilities when guided by a coach trained in reflections, as opposed to merely being told what to do. This method activates more brain activity, underscoring the effectiveness of coaching over directive advice.Marcia stresses the need for organizational leaders to evolve proactively. Successful transformational change hinges on embracing a coaching culture, connecting deeply with employees, and making necessary shifts before crises occur. This involves leaders transitioning from focusing solely on personal achievements to prioritizing the development of other leaders within the organization. Incorporating emotional intelligence into leadership practices and understanding the biochemistry of motivation—feeling safe, supported, and valued—can significantly improve team dynamics and organizational outcomes. In this interview, we talk with Master Mentor Coach, Clare Norman, about her article " Un-learning - The key to mentor coaching." Before we became coaches, we each developed ways of seeing the world that kept us safe or gave us a sense of belonging to the "tribe," whether that tribe was a family system, a peer group, or our coach training cohort. The best coaching works on the “who” of the thinker, so that the “what” falls into place with ease (per Marcia Reynolds in Coach the Person, Not the Problem). The same holds true for learning to coach. The best training and the best mentor coaching work on the “who” of the coach, their beliefs, mindsets and paradigms, so that the “what” of the coaching competencies falls into place with ease.In this podcast, we will discuss what mentor coaching is, why we need to change our our mindsets and how we can apply them to our coaching practices.  With over 20 years of coaching experience, Clare Norman MCC is highly sought after by other expert coaches, as well as successful coach training companies as a Master Mentor Coach. Clare looks to continually sharpen individuals' coaching edge and upskill mentor coaches so they can deliver high-quality feedback to their coaches-in-development.Her laser focus on mindset shifts and her knack for spotting marginal gains has made her a go-to person for coaches looking for mentorship and practical, meaningful ways to improve their practice. Legal Grounds | Conversations on Life, Leadership & Law

Imagine a world without Anger. Sounds kinda good, right? Everyone being nice to each other, never fighting to merge for traffic or crowding the grocery store aisles…  But, counterintuitive as it may seem, a world devoid of Anger would actually be a pretty terrible place to live.  See, a lot of us have been taught that our negative emotions are, in a way, "not fit to print."  Sadness, guilt, anger - all of these emotions are natural, and yet we are either taught to avoid them or shamed out of experiencing them. This, in turn, affects our ability to fully communicate our authentic selves.  My guest this week, Marcia Reynolds, learned that lesson from an unlikely source in an unlikely place - a cell-mate during her time in jail.  Marcia has gone on to earn two master's degrees and a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology.  She is the founder of Covisioning, a leadership coaching firm that focuses on engagement and emotional intelligence to help leaders foster change in their organizations and bring teams closer together.  Marcia is a two time TEDx speaker and the author of multiple books including Wander Woman, and The Discomfort Zone. We talk about the positive power of anger, why people tend to hide (or hide behind) their negative emotions, and how the "lean in" culture is becoming a thing of the past. Enjoy the show!

It's a meaning-making machine of our sense of reality We refer people to an article on Ever Widening Circles article with the TED Talk called “What Fear Can Teach us” [13:19 – 21:40] Workers are experiencing our “cultures” differently now People have been overwhelmed by the changes they must incorporate into their working and personal lives We don't handle the overwhelm well. It's not just that things have shifted. Some things are gone and others have appeared. We need to give people a space to breathe. We don't have to fix it for them, or give advice. Just be present and give them space to breathe. People are being kinder than they need to be. And what exactly do each of us mean by saying “I'm kind.” A good question to ask when someone says they are being one way or another is to ask what they mean by that. How Dr. Reynolds got into coaching by accident Getting “Empathy” right!… It is an outcome after you have gotten curious about someone. [21:41 – 30:35] What takes place to bring about real change What it takes to rewire the brain When we listen and reflect on our understanding of what they said, they can see their thinking, and often will say, that's not what I meant. Everyone evolves from a back and forth to get clarification. Marcia thinks it's important for people to hear their thoughts, opinions, and beliefs spoken by someone else, it prompts them to critically consider how their thinking affects their goals. Reflective Inquiry… “Here's what I hear you saying. Tell me more.” Be Curious. Ask what people mean kindly. [30:36 – 37:05] Transformational conversations More simple than people think Help people climb a tree in their brain and look down on their thinking From the top of the tree, they can see gaps in their logic and the way fear is guiding their thinking patterns [37:06 - 49:03] Anger and Depression Book: Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers There is a state we all get in called “Cortisol crabby” – When Adrenaline is being pumped out too often when our way of thinking creates too much stress. The Adrenaline High then trails off to the numbness of sadness… and in this state… We only see the negative! The power of laughter Coaching helps us safely express ourselves Being aware of our spine…how our body positions affect the way others feel a sense of safety or not, around us. [49:04- 54:27] Focusing on what you are giving Deciding ahead of time what emotion you want to bring to a conversation Come to a conversation with Key word… Calm, courage, care, etc… We can recognize emotion and be open to talking about what triggers it. [54:28- 64:21] Healthy Friction The Challenger Disaster and how people avoided doing the right thing (postponing the launch because the temperatures dipped below freezing) because they wanted to avoid confrontation and friction. The gas pump story is about to give and take… self-awareness, and avoiding friction Allow friction in a group. Remember that friction is just energy circulating. We can learn to live with the storm and honor each other in the process if we realize that creating anything will generate a flow of energy swirling around, often perceived as friction. Protecting people's dignity so they can change their minds Often we don't do the right thing because of being afraid of the other person's response, we are getting lost in the fear of response when we forget to focus on the importance and urgency of a good outcome. If you don't talk it out, you're going to act it out. [64:22- 70:59] Closing Segment Read some of Marcia's blogs. Raphaela Browne is my guest co-host today, and we talk about undoing what might be a  lasting impact of old embarrassments and why that's important. The intent is not to force us to dredge up painful stories, but rather a nod to the fact that sometimes we may  have unconscious holdings that might be rooted in something from our past that was really difficult. And if it was never seen or honored or normalized, sometimes it can still hold you back from things in life that you'd really love to do. We talk about what that looks like in our work as coaches as well as how to share and move through and bring healing to these places - thus catalyzing the chance for you to live more freely.
