Digital Detox: Finding Family Balance in a Screen-Filled World with Michael Jacobus

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2024 32:42

Let's have a real talk about something that's not only pervasive in our digital world but also deeply personal for many of us guiding our kids through the maze of technology—screen addiction. In the spirit of vulnerability and courage, I want to share insights from someone who's walked a mile in those shoes: Michael Jacobus. With a wealth of experience from over four decades as a summer camp director, Michael stepped into a new arena fueled by his personal journey navigating his son's gaming addiction. This heart-led venture culminated in the creation of Reset Summer Camp, a beacon for families wrestling with the challenge of screen and gaming addictions. What stands out about Michael's approach is his emphasis on digital detox not as an act of deprivation but as a pathway to nurturing healthy family dynamics and embracing our role as parents and educators in this narrative. Originally focusing on gaming addiction, the camp has broadened its horizon to confront all facets of screen addiction, including the magnetic pull of social media and the vortex of content streaming. Michael dives deep into recognizing the signs of addiction, confronting the stark reality that neither governmental nor parental controls are silver bullets, and highlighting the irreplaceable value of open, honest communication and modeling healthy digital behavior at home. His reflections on how the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified these issues strike a chord with the complexities we face today. But here's a glimmer of hope—Michael has crafted an online course specifically for us, aiming to arm us with practical tools and strategies to guide our children's screen time with intention and wisdom. Sharing Michael's story and the mission behind Reset Summer Camp isn't just about spreading the word; it's about inviting us into a collective journey towards understanding and action. It's a call to lean into the discomfort of confronting our digital habits and to emerge empowered to create a more balanced relationship with our screens. Let's engage in this conversation with open hearts and minds, ready to make small, brave changes that ripple out into the lives of our children, setting them on a path to not just navigate the digital world, but to thrive in it. BIOGRAPY Michael Jacobus is an internationally recognized author, child development specialist, and camp professional. He has an extensive background in youth-serving nonprofits, staff training, operations, administration, and outdoor education. Michael has been a Camp Director for over 30 years. In the summer of 2018, Michael started the world's first clinical summer camp program for teens and adolescents suffering from unhealthy screen time and social-media overuse habits and gaming addiction, Reset Summer Camp for Digital Detox & Life Skills. The program is planning an international expansion in the summer of 2022. It's the beginning of December, and if you're like me, you're trying to figure out last-minute gifts. When my kids were growing up, I would always have a pile of books next to their stockings. The entire time I've been raising my kids, I've been trying to instill a love of books in them. One way I did that was to get them lots of books each Christmas.  It was just easier to put a big pile of books next to their stocking rather than wrap them all up. So, I thought today that I would share some of the books that I have read this year because if I left it open to all of the books that I've read in the youth or young adult section, it would just take too long. I added a couple of classics in, too.  I've been reading some young adult books with my students this year that have really stood out for me.  I want to share those with you to give you some ideas for books that you wouldn't think of reading because most of these are books I didn't read with my own kids.  Enjoy! Isn't it exciting? December's here. We have all kinds of exciting activities that we're doing. We are going sledding and having snow days and, you know, going to see Santa, if that's your thing. We have church activities and all kinds of family that are going to be visiting. And additional fancy meals that you're supposed to put together. And oh, by the way, on top of that, educate our kids. Right. I don't know about you, but I have always loved December, but... Being really vulnerable here... It's also when I kind of had a couple of breakdowns over the years. It can be a crazy, crazy month, especially when we have already taken on so much more just by taking the responsibility of educating our kids at home. So, this is my little "Yeah, have fun for December, but take care of yourself"  episode. When my kids were little, I would often take the entire month off of school for December. So we would not do regular school. Now, that didn't mean that learning wasn't happening. It was happening all over the place. We were doing so many different things. But it just looked a lot different, and it lowered my stress a little bit by doing that. If something came up, it was like, okay, well, we aren't doing school. In this episode, I share some fun activities you can do during the month that are simple, but there is some learning going on. Be sure to join my Facebook Homeschool Support group for ideas and reminders about making December fun but less stressful. Navigating the uncharted waters of the future can be a daunting task, especially for homeschooling parents. The world is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and it often feels like we're preparing our children for a destination that remains hidden in the fog of uncertainty. In these turbulent times, how can we equip our kids with the skills and knowledge they need when the very landscape of tomorrow remains elusive? It's true; the subjects we diligently teach and the experiences we curate for our children might not align perfectly with the demands of future employers. But perhaps therein lies the beauty of homeschooling – the ability to foster a holistic, adaptable, and forward-thinking education. In this age of rapid change, memorizing facts and figures alone won't suffice. Instead, we must cultivate in our children a love for learning, a hunger for exploration, and a resilience that enables them to tackle the unknown with confidence. By nurturing these essential qualities, we empower our children to not only adapt to the shifting tides of the job market but to become architects of their own destinies. Consider this: the skills needed in the future job market may not be limited to traditional subjects. Tomorrow's employers may prize creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and emotional intelligence above all else. As homeschooling parents, we have the freedom to instill these attributes through a diverse range of educational experiences. I've been researching technology and its pros and cons and thought I'd share some of the "aha's" I've had about Artificial Intelligence.  People have calmed down a little about AI, but when ChatGPT first came out, there were so many fearful posts and articles.   I know there is still a lot of misunderstanding and confusion about it. If we look back at history, there have been many times when new innovations are vilified because people don't know how to use them effectively. Once we get over that hump, they just become normal.  Just in my lifetime, I've seen computers, the internet, and cell phones change the way we live. When it comes to education, AI is something homeschoolers can embrace.  Hopefully other education systems will eventually, because whoever does, will give their kids a distinct advantage!  Learn a bit more about AI in this week's episode! My son and I attended a TEDx yesterday, and I found a theme running through most of the presentations - the importance of taking risks. Have you ever gone to a TEDx?  You've probably watched a TED talk on their website or on your TV.  They are on YouTube as well.  My favorite is the one by Sir Ken Robinson titled "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" But back to yesterday and the theme.  The presenters weren't talking about education, but I could see how so much of what they shared was applicable to our lives as educators and parents.  There were some definitely genius connections made! Listen in to hear about a few of the presentations and see how they can connect to your life! Would you like more information about the presentations I mentioned?  We attended the TEDx Temecula on September 30, 2023.  The speakers I mentioned are Dr. Smita Malhotra, Taylor Cole, and Connie Stopher.  It will take a couple of months for the recordings to be posted on YouTube but be sure to check for them!  The presentations were great!

There are so many negative stereotypes of teens today.  They are rebellious, moody, lazy, and unmotivated.  Just last week, I was talking to a woman whose teen regularly swears and screams at her. What if I told you it didn't need to be this way?  And it starts with YOU. In this week's episode, I talk about why "teenagers" aren't allowed in my home.  And, no.  I don't kick my kids out when they turn thirteen. BOOKS A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille

NEW!  Realizing Genius Connections - Books and Beyond! Have you ever had the experience where several things happen, and all of a sudden, you are making all these connections?  You are reading a book, and you remember what someone said in a webinar or course or another book, and everything just makes a little bit more sense. That happens to me on a regular basis, and the first thing I want to do is share it with someone!  I've been thinking about doing this for a while and this week, I finished a book and attended a webinar and ... BAM!  I was hit with some genius connections!  I just had to share! The book I read is "So Good They Can't Ignore You" by Cal Newport.  And when I say read, I really mean listened to.  I learned a long time ago that I can get through a lot more books if I listen to them.  I usually listen to them at about 1.5x speed. (I got my boys hooked, too - they can listen to it at 2.0x - a little too fast for me!)  Sometimes I will purchase the physical book as well (after I've listened to it).  These are usually the books that I want to use as sources for research.  I also use Reading Graphics as a resource.  It is meant to be used as a source for book summaries.  I use it mostly for notes on books that I've listened to that I don't need to dive deep into. But back to my connections... One of the things I liked about Newport's book is that he brought up several books that I've dived deep into!  Like Drive by Daniel Pink and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.  I quote these books in several of my presentations on homeschooling.  These were the first Genius Connections I made with Newport's book. I made another one yesterday when I attended Tatiana Fallon's webinar on "Leadership Education: What it is and Why it Works."  Tatiana was raised and homeschooled with the Leadership Education philosophy and is now homeschooling her kids using it as well.  Throughout her presentation, she made connections.  From her connections, I was able to make more. While you have missed attending her webinar live, there is a subscription special you can purchase to have access to the recording of her webinar and many others that are focused on helping you homeschool and Leadership Education.  Tati is also scheduled to give several more webinars on Leadership Education, usually on the first Saturday of the month.  They are free to attend.  You can see the event schedule and register for them HERE.

If you've ever attended one of my presentations, you'll understand the central role my mother plays in my life. She isn't just a parent; she's my confidante, my mentor, and a great source of inspiration. Her influence on me is immeasurable, and the knowledge she has shared has formed the bedrock upon which I build my work. I genuinely appreciate her willingness to participate in this interview, as it allows me to share her wisdom and insight with a wider audience. One of the most extraordinary aspects of my mother is her innate ability to connect with children. Kids are drawn to her like a magnet, and it's not by chance. She possesses a unique gift for speaking to them in a way that makes them feel heard and valued. She takes the time to listen to their thoughts, dreams, and concerns, forging genuine connections that leave a lasting impact. It's no surprise that children find in her not just a friend but a trusted mentor. During our time together, my mother and I delved into a wide range of topics. We explored the various methods she employed to nurture the individual talents and passions of not only myself but also some of my siblings. Her guidance and support were instrumental in shaping our journeys and helping us discover our own unique potential. Her unwavering belief in our abilities encouraged us to strive for greatness. One particularly memorable part of our discussion was her "3-13-17 talk." This insightful conversation centered around pivotal stages in a child's life—ages 3, 13, and 17—and the guidance parents should provide during these critical times. Her advice in this regard was not only enlightening but also profoundly practical, offering a roadmap for parents navigating the complexities of child-rearing. Additionally, my mother shared her valuable advice for grandparents actively involved in homeschooling. Her insights into this role emphasized the importance of intergenerational learning and the unique contributions that grandparents can make to their grandchildren's education. I had the distinct privilege of interviewing Dr. Phil Hickman this week, which I consider a genuine honor. Given my dedication to homeschooling and my consistent message about the pressing issues within the public school system, it's not often that I have the opportunity to converse with individuals with such extensive experience in that field. Dr. Hickman boasts a comprehensive background in academia, having fulfilled nearly every role imaginable, ranging from a teacher's assistant to an advisor to the federal government! One particularly intriguing point he raised was, "Education remains the sole industry permitted to operate with a failure rate." I truly appreciate his commitment to addressing this matter. What really got my attention was his current project, an educational application named PlaBook. This innovative platform leverages AI to assess students' proficiency in reading and mathematics. Its gamified approach ensures that it captures children's interest, transforming learning into something they eagerly embrace. Moreover, it equips parents and educators with real-time data, enabling them to tailor their instructional methods accordingly. Shifting gears to the realm of artificial intelligence, our discussion encompassed the trajectory of education and the necessary shifts in emphasis. Dr. Phil eloquently delved into the idea that the careers our kids will have haven't even materialized yet. This begs the question: How can we adequately equip them for this unforeseen future? Fortunately, Dr. Phil offered insightful suggestions! To find out more about Dr. Phil check out his WEBSITE, or connect with him on LINKEDIN.

I don't know about you, but the idea of having to teach upper-level math to my kids made me question our decision to homeschool.  It didn't STOP me.  I decided I would figure it out when I got there.  But math was not my favorite subject.  Teaching it to little kids is fun!  "How many red M&Ms are there?  What happens if we eat 2?" type of math I can handle no problem.  And then we throw in the non-traditional learner, and the math gets even more challenging to teach!  My three older kids could take a textbook and learn whatever (even if they didn't like it), but my youngest two, especially with math, needed something different.  And, to be honest, I wish I had been able to do better in math with all of them. What I needed to find is someone who loved math and understood learning styles.  And that is Mr. D and everyone who works at Mr. D Math.    I wish I had found them years ago! Dennis DiNoia, M.A.Ed, has been immersed in education for over 30 years. He holds an M.A. in Education from the University of South Florida. He is affectionately known to his students as “Mr. D.” His online programs have students across the entire United States, and Mr. D has worked with students on five different continents! Mr. D is a pioneer in “live online class,” which he began leading in 2013. Mr. D's first book, “TEACH – creating independently responsible learners,” was released last year, and he is currently working on a new book on how to develop and nurture executive functioning skills. Mr. D's podcast brings top homeschooling educators, parents, and students with a story to tell. Even if you already have a math program that works for your family, be sure to check this episode out.  Dennis is AMAZING!  We talked about the differences between textbooks and online math programs and the trends he sees in online class offerings.  He also shares some ideas on how to help your kids really "get" math.  Enjoy!

Hey there! I'm excited to share with you an upcoming podcast episode where I chat with Mandi Frost, an academic coach who partners with parents to coach students. What's interesting is that Mandi doesn't just coach students - she also coaches parents. She believes that a three-way partnership is crucial for success when working with a child. That way, everyone is on the same page, and the child can get the support they need both at home and with their coach. But there's a delicate balance between confidentiality and communication with parents. Mandi shares how she navigates this and ensures that the student feels comfortable with her while also keeping parents in the loop. As a homeschooler, I've struggled with making summers productive for my kids. And it turns out, I'm not alone. Mandi has some parent workshops coming up, and she talks about how these workshops can help parents coach their child to be more productive during the summer while also building a stronger relationship with them. Mandi also talks about how coaching parents to be more like a coach than a boss can lead to more cooperation and better outcomes for everyone involved. If you're a homeschooler or a parent looking for ways to support your child's academic success, you won't want to miss this episode. Mandi has so much knowledge and experience to share, and I guarantee you'll come away with some valuable insights. BIOGRAPHY Mandi is from Zimbabwe and home-educated her three young adult sons, two of which had learning challenges. Children learn best through multisensory, hands-on experiences as they delight in their learning through “real life” connections that build confidence and life skills. As a certified academic life coach, career coach, and parent coach, Mandi created coach programs to support (tw)teens in healthy mindsets towards resilient confidence and healthy independence so they make better choices and build strategies to manage their lives responsibly. Mandi is a speaker at educational conferences & summits, encouraging parents how to build self-directed learners who are strong in their faith, lead with confidence and relationship. Mandi partners with parents in “The Coach Approach,”- shifting from boss-manager-parent to curious-coach-parent - for more connection and relationship. The Home Harmony Academy provides parents with coach strategies on how to guide and equip their family in making healthier life choices, encouraging respectful responses, building better time management and focus so children manage their lives confidently with accountability as they work together to honor God. When Mandi is not coaching, she is reading, studying her Bible, walking in the mountains, road-tripping, or soaking up the sun. As parents and educators, our lives revolve around our kids.  That isn't a bad thing... unless we get lost along the way.  Michelle DeKeyser helps moms find their way.  One of the things I love about this episode is the realization Michelle shares about how her son is benefitting from her realizing her genius.  Be sure to listen, subscribe, and share! BIOGRAPHY Michelle DeKeyser Motherhood Coach, Teacher, & Speaker Michelle envisions connecting mamas by building a support system together to remove the loneliness and isolation that can be felt in motherhood. She holds a MA in education, spent eight years dedicated to the classroom, and traveled around the world before starting her own family and becoming a stay-at-home mom of three active kids. She has both led and participated in various mom groups and book clubs, but despite these groups, she always envisioned something different. Michelle found herself looking around, suddenly forgetting what she could do for herself that didn't involve the kid's activities. As she worked to discover her own passions, Michelle realized there is no one-size-fits-all program for moms getting back in touch with themselves. The true key to figuring out your passion and making your goals happen is finding connections in a supportive environment. Her new mission became helping other mamas find their passions in a supportive, empowering environment surrounded by grace while have the ability to be more present with their families. Michelle has started spreading this message through YouTube (@connectingmamas), Instagram (@mama_connector), her Blog at www.connectingmamas.com, and courses using her Check-In framework. Nate Noorlander, from the Nomadic Professor, joined me for this week's episode.  The Nomadic Professor is an online, non-partisan, high school history courses that teach students the core narrative and all of its accompanying skills: taking notes, making original judgments, reasoning with evidence, reading between the lines, following a rubric, writing a defensible argument, working with bias, and much, much more. I love talking history, especially when we can go deeper and see the connections that can be found.  Nate didn't disappoint!  He has lived a fascinating life and has been a bit nomadic himself!  Be sure to listen where he and his family got caught during COVID!  I'm surprised he got out! NATE'S BIOGRAPHY In college I double-majored in philosophy and history teaching, then moved to Beijing, China, to teach IGCSE and A Level history at the Cambridge International Curriculum Center of Beijing Normal University. I also spent time touring in India and trekking in Nepal. Worn out by the Beijing air I moved back to Utah with my family and taught English and history at Mountainville Academy, and then the American International School of Utah. At AISU I developed mini-courses in boredom and awareness, based on Heidegger's ideas about technology, and Nicholas Carr's ideas about what the internet does to our brains. Worn out this time by life in the beautiful mountain west I returned to Beijing, where I taught IB history, IB English, and Theory of Knowledge at the Yew Chung International School of Beijing. When Covid-19 hit I was coaching the boys basketball team and gearing up for our end-of-season tournament in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The trip was canceled, my family just made it out of Beijing on a flight three times its usual cost, and I stuck it out in the shuttered city for another six weeks. When life didn't change, I left too. Since then it's been all history with the Nomadic Professor.
