I'm going to take a guess that most of us--pretty much all of us--would love to be hugely successful in our chosen fields. Unfortunately, there was no class on success in school. In fact, if anything, we learned how to be “good enough” but generally, not exceptional. And if such a class existed, we would have learned what my guest has studied at the deepest and highest levels. Dr. Ruth Gotian wrote a book I wish I'd read decades ago called The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance. I loved the book and I'm not alone. Countless thought leaders you likely know and love have praised her book including SuperPsyched guest and Duke Business School professor, Dorie Clark, who said, “Ruth Gotian has reverse-engineered the path to success, based on her research with extreme high achievers, and offers useful tools and strategies which will give you a giant leap forward on your own path to greatness." Beautifully stated, Dorie! So, listen in as Ruth unpacks the science of success, and what it takes to achieve at the highest levels.
It's been said the better you are at something, the easier it looks to others. However, the road to success is usually not an easy or perfect journey. Our guest today studies the habits of the most successful people, in order to learn about their habits and best practices. I'm excited to have her here with us today to hear what she has learned from studying everyone from astronauts to athletes, so that we might optimize our own success.Dr. Ruth Gotian is the Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology, former Assistant Dean of Mentoring, and Executive Director of the Mentoring Academy at Weill Cornell Medicine. No one wants to be average. Most people aim to be above average and achieve greater things. The major problem is that most people don't know how to be above average. People always look up to high achievers. There are a number of characteristics shared by people who consistently achieve their goals. Society tells us that if we put forth maximum effort, success will follow. Is this true or just a saying that justifies all the time and energy we put into our careers? What is it that sets the most successful people apart from the rest of the pack? If you answered "hard work," "natural ability," or "luck," you should reconsider your answer. Working hard, having natural abilities, and even having some luck on your side are all critical, but they're only pieces of the success puzzle. Numerous studies over many years have shown that it is not so much a person's inherent abilities that allow them to succeed, but rather their actions and mindset. We are honored to have Dr. Ruth Godian on The Free Retiree Show. She is the Mentoring Academy's Executive Director, former Assistant Dean of Mentoring, and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine. I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People. Most leaders are, by their very nature, high achievers. And this is because leaders, especially new and emerging leaders, have a tendency to see a problem or challenge and want to attack it with the ferocity of a lion hunting in the wild. The advantage of this intense drive is that these leaders are extremely motivated, possess a high level of perseverance, have a strong personal and professional foundation, and are constantly learning from their experiences. And it's the highest of achievers, with years of experience, that can effectively balance performing all of these traits at the same time. The question then becomes, “How can emerging leaders learn to simultaneously harness and use these traits?” Well, I have good news for you, in this episode, you'll hear from Dr. Ruth Gotian, author of “The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance.” Dr. Gotian will offer insight and perspective from high achievers such as astronauts, Olympic champions, and Nobel Laureates, using their experiences to help emerging leaders operate at their peak performance level.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021. Ruth Gotian: The Success Factor Ruth Gotian has been hailed by the journal Nature and Columbia University as an expert in mentorship and leadership development. In 2021, she was selected as one of 30 people worldwide to be named to the Thinkers50 Radar List, where she was described as a “Prolific mentor and educator, leading important research into the secrets of success.” She is a semi-finalist for the Forbes 50 Over 50 list and has coached and mentored hundreds of people throughout her career. In addition to being published in academic journals, Ruth is a contributor to Forbes and Psychology Today, where she writes about optimizing success. She is the Chief Learning Officer in Anesthesiology and former Assistant Dean of Mentoring and Executive Director of the Mentoring Academy at Weill Cornell Medicine, where she is a faculty member. Ruth is the author of The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance*. In this conversation, Ruth and I discuss how leaders can genuinely connect with (and retain) their top performers. We explore the difference these employees make in organizations and what's unique about how they approach work and their careers. Ruth then suggests a number of practical steps to engage high performers genuinely to development them well and benefit the entire organization. Key Points High achievers can produce up to 400 percent more than the average employee. Promotions, diplomas, and awards may be starting points for high performers, but they are not ending points. Leading high performers well requires you to align with their intrinsic motivation. Offer high performers opportunities for exposure with visibility to senior leadership, strengths assignments, and decision-making. Provide autonomy to high performers. For them, the chase is as exciting as the win. They fear not trying more than failing. Recognize that internal professional development programs may not be sufficient for the demands of high performers. Support external opportunities they identify and connect with them during and after those experiences to further their learning (and yours). Dr. Ruth Gotian is one of the most interesting women I have ever gotten to know. I could tell you about her extraordinary academic and professional accomplishments, and you might agree with me, but I am not even referring to that. What really strikes me is how she describes her grandmother and the profound impact their relationship has had on her life. Even though they were two generations apart, Ruth shared that she and her grandmother were like sisters. Her grandmother was a pharmacist, having attended Columbia University's pharmacy school as one of 13 women in a class with 300 men. Ruth described her as “...this five foot tall with heels powerhouse. And she is the one who taught me how to stand up for what you believe in, while still looking like a lady.” Drawn to her values of achievement, family, and community, they talked every day. Ruth didn't realize the extent to which her grandmother was a role model until she was in her 40s. Today, Ruth is the Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology and former Assistant Dean of Mentoring and Executive Director of the Mentoring Academy at Weill Cornell Medicine. In 2021, she was selected as one of 30 people worldwide to be named to the Thinkers50 Radar List, dubbed the Oscars of management thinking, and by August, was shortlisted as the top eight emerging management thinkers in the world. In addition to publishing in academic journals, Ruth is a regular contributor to Forbes and Psychology Today where she writes about ‘optimizing success'. Her research is about the mindset and skillset of peak performers, including Nobel laureates, astronauts, and Olympic champions. Her book, The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance just came out in January 2022. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Ruth's journey: Ruth discovered through her research that all peak performers have four things in common, the first one being that they are intrinsically motivated; there's a fire from within why they do what they do, they're not doing it for external validation or promotion. She has been hailed by the journal Nature and Columbia University as an expert in mentorship and leadership development. The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance by Ruth Gotian A distinguished Harvard Business School professor offers a compelling reassessment and defense of purpose as a management ethos, documenting the vast performance gains and social benefits that become possible when firms manage to get purpose right. Few business topics have aroused more skepticism in recent years than the notion of corporate purpose, and for good reason. Too many companies deploy purpose, or a reason for being, as a promotional vehicle to make themselves feel virtuous and to look good to the outside world. Some have only foggy ideas about what purpose is and conflate it with strategy and other concepts like “mission,” “vision,” and “values.” Even well-intentioned leaders don't understand purpose's full potential and engage half-heartedly and superficially with it. Outsiders spot this and become cynical about companies and the broader capitalist endeavor. Having conducted extensive field research, Ranjay Gulati reveals the fatal mistakes leaders unwittingly make when attempting to implement a reason for being. Moreover, he shows how companies can embed purpose much more deeply than they currently do, delivering impressive performance benefits that reward customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, and communities alike. To get purpose right, leaders must fundamentally change not only how they execute it but also how they conceive of and relate to it. They must practice what Gulati calls deep purpose, furthering each organization's reason for being more intensely, thoughtfully, and comprehensively than ever before. In this authoritative, accessible, and inspiring guide, Gulati takes readers inside some of the world's most purposeful companies to understand the secrets to their successes. He explores how leaders can pursue purpose more deeply by navigating the inevitable tradeoffs more deliberately and effectively to balance between short- and long-term value; building purpose more systematically into every key organizational function to mobilize stakeholders and enhance performance; updating organizations to foster more autonomy and collaboration, which in turn allow individual employees to work more purposefully; using powerful storytelling to communicate a reason for being, arousing emotions and building a community of inspired and committed stakeholders; and building cultures that don't merely support purpose, but also allow employees to link the corporate purpose to their own personal reasons for being. As Gulati argues, a deeper engagement with purpose holds the key not merely to the well-being of individual companies but also to humanity's future. With capitalism under siege and relatively low levels of trust in business, purpose can serve as a radically new operating system for the enterprise, enhancing performance while also delivering meaningful benefits to society. It's the kind of inspired thinking that businesses—and the rest of us—urgently need.
Success has a different meaning for each of us. But the thing that unites all of our definitions of success is that we should set a goal and achieve it to consider ourselves successful. So, how do we do this? Ruth Gotian is here on the show today to explain how. Dr. Ruth Gotian is the Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology and author of The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance. At the age of 43, she attended school to get a doctorate on success and wrote the book The Success Factor in the middle of the pandemic, while working full time. Ruth will go over the four elements of success which are: intrinsic motivation, perseverance, a strong foundation that is constantly being reinforced, and continuous learning through informal means. In this message, Bishop Malcolm speaks about how we can develop the capacity to know when God is speaking to us and what God is saying to us. According to Bishop Malcolm, the critical success factor as a believer is being able to develop an ear for God. Bishop Malcolm also claims that our spiritual life is linked to every word that comes out of the mouth of God. Therefore, if we are unable to hear what God is saying, it makes it impossible to flourish and grow in order to live the life that God intended for us.
