The great Jon Lovitz talks about comedy, acting, stand-up comedy, dogs, The Groundlings, Managers, A league of Their Own, The Simpsons, The Critic, and the serendipity of show business.  Bio: Jon Lovitz has been one of the best known comedians for the last thirty years. He got his start acting in High School plays and developing his skills at the University of California, Irvine where he earned a B.A. in Drama. He also studied acting with Tony Barr at the Film Actors Workshop. At the advice of Tony Barr, Jon decided to concentrate solely on comedy. He began taking classes with the famous improv comedy group, “The Groundlings” in 1982. One year later, after being accepted into “The Sunday Company”, Jon got his first acting job on the television show “The Paper Chase: the Second Year”. Thinking he was on his way, he promptly quit his job at a clothing store…and became a messenger. The next three years – nothing!!! Then, in September of 1984, he was accepted into the main company at “The Groundlings”.On March 28, 1985, “The Groundlings” appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” where Jon premiered his character “Tommy Flanagan of Pathological Liars Anonymous”. Following the introduction of this persona, Jon got an agent, and booked a movie, a series, a voice over for a cartoon, and “Saturday Night Live”. Jon has been working non-stop since. He was nominated for an Emmy his first two years on “Saturday Night Live”. While on SNL, he became known for his characters “Tommy Flanagan of the Pathological Liars Anonymous” (“Year, that's the ticket”), “Master Thespian”, “Hanukkah Harry”, and “the Devil”. He has appeared in over 40 films, including “Big”, “A League of Their Own”, “The Wedding Singer”, “High School High”, “Small Time Crooks”, “Rat Race”, “The Producers”, “Eight Crazy Nights”, “The Benchwarmers”, “Grown Ups 2”, “The Ridiculous 6”,  among many others. He has also worked with acclaimed directors such as Penny Marshall, Rob Reiner, Jerry Zucker, and Woody Allen.  He one of a handful of actors used regularly in almost all his movies by Adam Sandler. This year, in 2024, he just completed the lead character in the film “The Toast” and will be appearing in “Happy Gilmore 2” starring Adam Sandler.Along with his comedy, Jon is well known for his distinctive voice. He was the lead voice for the character “Jay Sherman” in the acclaimed cult cartoon series, “The Critic”. He has also appeared in twelve episodes of “The Simpsons”, even creating the character of Marge Simpson's boyfriend, “Artie Ziff” (who sounds suspiciously like Jay Sherman). Jon has also appeared on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in Neil Simon's play “The Dinner Party”,  taking over the lead role from Henry Winkler. He has sung (yes, he can sing!) at Carnegie Hall three times (including “Great Performances: Ira Gershwin at 100: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall) and sung the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium and the U.S. Open. He also sang with English rock star, Robbie Williams at the Royal Alpert Hall and appears on his album, “Swing While You're Winning!”He currently is performing his new musical comedy show, “From the Shower to the Stage” with celebrated musical conductor and arranger, Randy Waldman. Randy has been Barbra Streisand's personal pianist for the last 36 years and is her current musical conductor as well.Jon has also had an illustrious television career. He was the first famous guest star on the hit show “Friends”. In the same week, he appeared on an episode of Seinfeld. Jon also has had recurring roles on “Hot in Cleveland”, “Las Vegas”, “Two and a Half Men”, “Hawaii Five-O”, and “New Girl”.Editing Notes: Jon Lovitz episode seem to go on and on. Jon won't stop talking. Interested in how you think it is. I think I talk too much about wanting to have sex with Kate Upton. I do it TWICE.  (Kate Upton might not be famous anymore) Funny?  If not,  feel free to cut it.

Subscribe to The Locher Room: https://bit.ly/TheLocherRoomEmmy Award-winning actress, author and animal advocate Carolyn Hennesy joined me in The Locher Room to reminisce about her incredible career dazzling audiences with her various daytime, primetime and film roles. On television, she played the deliciously vicious “Penelope Ellis” on ABC's critically acclaimed series Revenge. She also joined the cast for the fifth season of the sleek vampires-meet-world saga, True Blood, and fast became a fan favorite as Rosalyn, the ageless vamp with a Texas twang. Prior to Revenge and True Blood, Hennesy was best known for her memorable work as “Barb” on ABC's Cougar Town and for her (twice) Emmy nominated work as “Diane Miller” on ABC's General Hospital. She has also guest starred on a long list of prime time favorites including Champions, NCIS, The Cool Kids, The Mindy Project, MOM, and Liza on Demand. Kids across America know her as the hilariously haughty Mrs. Chesterfield on Disney Channel's Jessie. On the big screen, Hennesy's credits include Click, Legally Blonde 2, Terminator 3 as well as starring in the horror film, St. Agatha (directed by SAW's Darren Bousman,) the recently released comedy Swing of Things and the soon to be released Relentless for Lifetime…but the biggest recent large screen news is her role in J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker as fighter pilot Demine Lithe. Online, she's starred in the independent series' Take it from the Top and These People, Business Doing Pleasure for TBS, Two Sentence Horror Stories for Time/Warner, and The Bay for Amazon Prime in the role of Karen Blackwell...for which she received her Emmy Award and the 2016 Indie Series Award. Most recently, she starred as Gloria in Sean Kanen's series, Studio City for which she received Emmy nominations two consecutive years. Hennesy received her training at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Her razor sharp comedic timing was honed as a member of The Groundling's Sunday Company and in ACME Theatre's main company. Hennesy has appeared in over a hundred stage productions worldwide, most recently and to great acclaim as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's Master Class at the Garry Marshall Theatre for which she received the LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award for “Best Actress In A Play” for the entirety of Los Angeles, 2017-18. Among other accolades, the LA Drama Critics Circle has distinguished her with the Natalie Schafer Award and the LA Stage Alliance honored her with her first Ovation for THE FAN MAROO. For the last three years, Hennesy hosted the red carpet reception for the Daytime Emmy Awards for NATAS, FB, and nearly all social media platforms. Hennesy's creative endeavors also include a successful career as a writer; she created the wildly popular “Pandora” (Bloomsbury USA) children's book series and penned the New York Times Bestseller “The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli” (Hyperion). When not on set, Hennesy is privileged to lend her time to a number of causes but she focuses on veteran affairs and particularly animal rescue, preservation, conservation and advocacy as an ambassador for American Humane and her own Los Angeles Zoo. She hosts her advocacy podcast “Animal Magnetism” back episodes of which may be found on YouTube. On January 2nd. 2017, Hennesy crossed something off of her bucket list: she rode on a float (Lucy Pet Foundation) in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Now she simply has to go into space (difficult) and fly over Disneyland as Tinkerbell to set off the fireworks (impossible). She lives in her native Los Angeles with four dogs and one cat, rescues all, and…in what spare time is left…she flies trapeze. Seriously!Original Airdate: 8/18/2021

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Emmy Winning Actress, Author and Animal Advocate, Carolyn HennesyAbout Harvey's guestA Los Angeles native and self proclaimed studio-brat, Carolyn has been in over 100 theatrical productions spanning the LA, regional and international theatre scenes.   If you ask her nicely she'll recite the list of her plays for you and then she'll recite it again…backwards.  Having trained at American Conservatory Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London as well as earning a dramatic scholarship to the California State University at Northridge, she has played such distinguished houses as the Mark Taper Forum, Arizona Theatre Company and the Geary Stage.  She also studied with the Groundlings in the early ‘90s and became a member of the Sunday Company.  From there she moved to the main company at the ACME Comedy Theatre and was a founding member of the all-female improv troupe, “Ovaryaction”.  She is the 2001 recipient of the prestigious Natalie Schafer Award for Outstanding Comedic Actress given by the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and has been featured as an “Actor's Actor” in the industry publication Backstage-West.   Among other accolades, the LA Stage Alliance has honored her with an Ovation Award, which she hosted in 2011, and in 2010 she added the words “Emmy nominated” (General Hospital) to her list of achievements. Most recently,  Carolyn dazzled as the deliciously vicious “Rosalyn Harris” on Alan Ball's critically acclaimed HBO series TRUE BLOOD.  Hennesy joined the cast for the fifth season of the sleek vampires-meet-world saga and fast became a fan favorite.  As Rosalyn, the ageless vamp with a Texas twang, Hennesy was at the top of her game, tossing one-liners like firecrackers, occasionally enjoying a juicy stake, and gleefully partaking in old-timey interrogation.Prior to TRUE BLOOD, Hennesy is best known for her memorable work as “Barb Coman” on ABC's COUGAR TOWN and for an Emmy nominated run as “Diane Miller” on ABC's GENERAL HOSPITAL.  Kids across America also know her as the hilariously haughty Mrs. Chesterfield on Disney Channel's JESSIE.  On the big screen, Hennesy's credits include CLICK starring Adam Sandler, LEGALLY BLONDE 2 with Reese Witherspoon, and TERMINATOR 3 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.Hennesy's creative endeavors also include a successful career as a writer.  She created the wildly popular “Pandora” (Bloomsbury USA) children's book series as well as penned the New York Times Bestseller “The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli” (Hyperion).  To see more, click on “Books.”When not on set, Hennesy is privileged to lend her time and talent to a number of causes including caring for our wounded warriors and helping those with debilitating physical issues regain their self-esteem, but chief among all causes is the issue of animal rescue. Now, all of that is well and good, but the big news is that Carolyn has become a flying trapeze artist.  No lie.  Just look at her hands.  If you really want to get her talking, just ask her, “Hey Carolyn, how's that layout coming along?!”For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com https://carolynhennesy.com/https://www.facebook.com/pages/Carolyn-Hennesy-Fan-Page/219399211420702https://twitter.com/carolynhennesy#carolynhennesy  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

On Episode 58, Pete is thrilled to speak with friend, former colleague, and comedy writer and actor with The Groundlings, Michael Aspinwall. Mike and Pete talk about Mike's formative years involving comedy, his inspirations, his days with The Groundlings, what he looks for in good comedy writing, his incredible run on WWE as Dr. Shelby, and some of his own writing and writing process.             Michael Aspinwall was inspired to move to Los Angeles and become an actor after a very successful performance in a Paris Gibson Middle School play entitled Tied to the Tracks in his home town of Great Falls, Montana.  Many of his mom's friends said he was good, and Michael took them seriously.  He went on to high school where he really fell in love with theatre, which further solidified his desire to act, direct, and write professionally, while simultaneously solidifying his social position in the caste system that is high school.  Michael attended UCLA's School of Theatre, Film, and Television, and while there, he studied performance primarily, in John Hall's Musical Theatre Workshop.  He appeared in John's productions of Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party and West Side Story (not by Andrew Lippa).  He was the 2004 recipient of the Carol Burnett Award for Outstanding Male Performer.  In 2005, Michael earned his Master's degree from UCLA's TFT under the guidance of Dr. Pat Harter.  He created a program that paralleled the California Arts Bridge program, using theatre and art to help younger students access the core curricula.  After college, Michael began his career as an actor by waiting tables at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, where he performed Forrest Gump themed trivia nightly, and acted as though he cared about whether the temperature of the guests' fare was to their liking.  He worked a slew of odd jobs, became a certified yoga teacher and a credentialed high school English teacher, and eventually found his home as an actor at The Groundlings' Theater in Hollywood.   Michael found The Groundlings at a moment when the LA audition process was taking its toll.  That place and the people in it breathed life back into a ten-year-old kid who used to stay up to watch SNL, then perform Mike Myers's bits in front of his fourth grade class.  At The Groundlings, Michael met his sketch group, Big Boss Comedy, and a slew of other mind-blowingly talented people he gets to call his friends.  Since his turn in the Groundling's Sunday Company, Michael continues to write and produce original work with his writing partner and fellow Sunday Company Alum, Patric Cagle.   He has toured Southern California with Kevin Broberg's Quote/Unquote show, was a featured performer at Chicago Sketch Fest 2014 with Big Boss Comedy, and he appeared on television as WWE's anger management specialist, Dr. Shelby.    Allusions and References from Episode 58   Mike Aspinwall's IMDB Page   Dr. Shelby's Wiki   Dr. It took Wendi McLendon-Covey four years to sign up for her first Groundlings class. Wendi even had to ask her friend to make the call because she was so nervous. But once Wendi was finally in class, she soared. She made her way from the Fun Shop intro class to the Groundlings main stage and has gone on to star in Reno 911, Bridesmaids, and now currently stars on ABC’s The Goldbergs. In this episode, Wendi talks about how she managed to finally take the leap of faith to start classes, the delicious kind of exhaustion she got from performing in Sunday Company and why she enjoyed her toughest teachers the most.

Welcome to another episode of the Modern Moron!  Have I got a treat for you during these otherwise tough and troubling times, an optimist to my pessimism, a glass half full to my flask half empty, a yin to my Moronic and yang.  Speaking of Yang, I miss Andrew Yang. Remember when we had a democratic primary going on with a historic diversity of candidates that dwindled down to two old white guys?.... Ah, those were simpler times. My guest!  My guest!    My guest is a long time friend Susan Yeagley form my days in L.A. with the Groundlings Theater.  We were in the Sunday Company together which is kind of like comedy boot for stretches of 6 months at a time.  It’s pretty much a 24/7 affair, rewarding and emotionally brutal at the same time. And I’ll speak for all Sunday company alumni in saying that regardless of the outcome I don’t know of many people who regret the experience. I’m really digressing today.  Maybe it’s Cabin fever.   Susan and I cover a lot of ground… so I’ve decided to break it up into two parts… mainly so I can get you to come back for another episode. We’re going to talk about the corona virus and the self quarantine of course,  we also talk about ways to cope…. Like therapeutic plate smashing and ax throwing…  Not only do we talk about Covid-19 we will learn from Susan about the Self Quarantine Covid-15 which you’re definitely going to want to hear about. She tells us what it’s like to grow up in Nashville, Tennessee and not be able to sing.  Apparently that’s a given, that you’ll sing and play 5 different instruments. I said this last week and I’ll say it again that this is NOT a place to go for advice or information about this pandemic and I guarantee you that we will try to make light of this situation so, this is not the podcast for you if you are sensitive about the corona virus as a topic.  I do wonder if stores are selling much Corona beer these days. It’s definitely a temporary solution. You probably have seen Susan play her character Jessica Wicks on NBC’s Parks and Recreation.  which you can still catch on Netflix AND Hulu. What a great show to binge watch while you’re stuck in the house. Lot’s of good vibes and tips from Susan Yeagely, and we hint at the possibility of her running for public office… It’s a Modern Moron exclusive and as always, thank you for listening.

Today I talk with a dear friend, collaborator and writing partner from my time in L.A.  We met while studying improvisation in the early 90’s at the Groundlings Theatre and we performed in the theatre’s Sunday Company in the late 90’s. We chat for a while about creating characters for radio which inevitably leads to a conversation about Phil Hendrie.  If you don’t know who Phil Hendrie is and you enjoy talk radio you need to look him up. I worked at the same radio station he did 97.1 KLSX Los Angeles.  This was in the late 80’s, Phil Had not started the show he does now and Howard Stern was years away from syndication in L.A. I’ll have links at the bottom of the episode description.  You should look him up because he truly creates theatre of the mind with characters and no sound effects. We also talk about some of the lame humor I attempted when I was on the radio and how I got some mileage out of terrible writing material.  Also my guest’s various jobs during his time in hollywood and some of the great comedy clubs in L.A. that are not stand up but Improvisation like The Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, Improv Olympic West and Second City Hollywood.  You might try any of those theatres if you’re headed there for work or play and I think you’ll find it interesting and different from the usual touristy excursions.   We wrap up our improv conversation with a class he will be teaching and how rewarding it is to see the growth in a student who takes the plunge and is brave enough to get up in front of their piers.   Maybe you’ve seen the show Drew Carey used to host “Whose Line Is it Anyway?”  but if you’ve never seen live improv before you really should. Theatre seems like it’s becoming one of the last shared live experiences and improv is even more so because the audience not only participates, but the show you see will never be seen again in that iteration and that makes for a truly unique experience.  This Moron highly recommends it. Even Tina Fey recommends Improv and there is a link in the description from her book “Miss Bossypants” about her rules of Improv and how it can change your life and remove belly fat.   Click yay (is there a "yay"button?), subscribe send money all that stuff but mainly thank you for listening to The Modern Moron. Oh, also we start off after both of us have just spent 40 exasperating minutes trying to work out the glitches with our microphones and headphones. HBS 029 Interview with Sandi McCree | Actress  On BET - The New Edition Story, & HBO's The Wire (aka Delonda Brice)  Actress, youth advocate and educator, Sandi McCree, known for her edgy, street-tough performance as "Delonda Brice" on HBO's The Wire, has been on the front line of arts education and media literacy for over 21 years years. McCree began acting at age 4 growing up in Washington, D.C. where she gained love for storytelling. She went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio, Film and Television from the University of Maryland and her Master's in acting from Case Western Reserve University. McCree furthered her dramatic studies at the National Shakespeare Conservatory in New York and the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. It was during her time at Case Western where McCree developed her approach of Multimedia Arts Focused Prevention Education through the formation of her organization The Thought Provoking Arts Company (TPAC). TPAC was commissioned by Case Western Reserve University to develop original arts-based programs aimed at providing prevention awareness activities for the student body with an emphasis on freshmen residents. TPAC's mission to provide comprehensive arts education and art focused prevention programming to children was fulfilled in McCree's work with multiple Ohio Public School Districts, Cuyahoga Community College, the Center for Families and Children in Cleveland Ohio and Pin Points Theatre, a national educational touring company in Washington, DC, where she served as Eastern Regional Director. Meanwhile, McCree's professional career took two mutually beneficial tracks as actress and arts educator. While performing across the country in stage productions such as The Exonerated, Fires in the Mirror and the one woman show The Gimmick, McCree was simultaneously writing and presenting on childhood education. She co-authored Artful Strategies for Prevention Education Group Work with Adolescent African-American Girls at the 23rd International Symposium on Social Work with Groups and in 1999 presented Using a Psychosocial Network to Empower Parents of Children with Sickle Cell Anemia to Maximize Life's Opportunities for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. McCree's work on stage and in education led to her serving as Media Liaison for the National Black Media Coalition. Her TV credits include The Closer Cold Case and Criminal Minds yet it is her work on HBO's The Wire that embodies the marriage of her passion for acting/storytelling with youth advocacy. Against type, McCree portrays "Delonda Brice," a villainous, misguided mother who would rather see her son selling drugs on the streets in order to support her ghetto fabulous lifestyle than attend and excel at school. Such a character couldn't be further from McCree's own and she's been able to use this deviant role as a platform for her dedication to the supportive development of young minds. McCree was a Producer of "BeBop to Hip-Hop" an educational performance at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz were she holds the position of Special Projects Coordinator. She recently appeared in the award-winning documentary "Keep On Keepin On" produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Sandi performs weekly with several improv troupes including Most Humble. She can be seen weekly at such venues as: The Groundlings Theater, Second City, iO West, The Clubhouse, Asylum Lab, Danger Room and Neon Venus. In November 2013, Most Humble is the 8-time defending champion of Second City Hollywood's Thunderdome Improv Cagematch show. In the Summer of 2015, Sandi McCree was invited to join the prestigious Sunday Company at The Groundlings. Sandi McCree is has taught and directed students at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and she teaches theatre arts at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts   Links to Sandi McCree: Twitter @SandiMcCree  Instagram @sandimccree BET.com: The New Edition Story The Wire on HBO: The WIRE    Thank You for checking out Hollywood Breakthrough Show  | Follow us on Twitter @TheBreakThur This podcast main purpose is to serve up positive information.
