LINER NOTES: Kris sits down with filmmakers Paul Sng & Celeste Bell to talk about their film Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche, a documentary about Celeste's Mom, Poly Styrene. Follow the film on Social Media: @PolyStyreneFilm on Twitter & Instagram. About the film:Poly Styrene was the first woman of color in the UK to front a successful rock band. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. But the late punk maverick didn't just leave behind an immense cultural footprint.Poly was survived by a daughter, Celeste Bell. Celeste became the unwitting guardian of her mother's legacy and her mother's demons. Misogyny, racism, and mental illness plagued Poly's life, while their lasting trauma scarred Celeste's childhood and the pair's relationship.Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga, this documentary follows Celeste as she examines her mother's unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother.--About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians. We're celebrating the Bentonville Film Festival with director/writer Mari Walker of the intense and beautiful film, See You Then. Simply put, this film follows two exes who reunite ten years later after an abrupt breakup, but the topics it covers are so much more than this! Honestly, some of the conversations in this film could have been recorded from a Bitch Talk happy hour (men, we suggest watching this film with a note pad). Junk Food Dinner gets zany this week with three goofy comedies picked by our Dom Deluise Patreon Donors!Up first, Tom Hanks plays a slacker about to get married to rich girl Tawny Kitaen but before he does his friends (Michael Dudikoff, Barry Diamond, Gary Grossman, and Adrian Zmed) decide to throw a wild stag bash in the 1984 comedy Bachelor Party. Then, Leigh McCloskey plays a dude so attractive he keeps getting kicked out of college for lude conduct with co-eds. Happy Friday my people! I was honored to be featured in WTOP’s Black History Month highlighting of black men and women doing groundbreaking work to better the community. Shoutout to Rob Woodfork and Jason Fraley! Check out the link to the article below, but I’m glad that my work with this show and the DC Black Film Festival is making a difference in the community both locally and at large. Today I talk with co-director and editor of the documentary The Commons, Suki Hawley. The documentary covers students at UNC’s flagship campus in Chapel Hill as they take to the commons to demand the removal of “Silent Sam,” a Jim-Crow-era Confederate statue. With the specter of the Charlottesville tragedy hanging thick in the air, the confrontation takes on a life of its own. I also talk with the director of SXSW Film, Janet Pierson. Janet and I talk about what you can expect to see at this year’s Film Festival and how to best navigate it! The SXSW Film and Music Festival is undeniably the best part of the entire year!! Katie and I attended the first weekend of the festival for the films, but stayed when we saw puppies, goats, and free pizza. Also, what happened that made us keep saying "dance like John Krasinski is watching"? Listen to hear all about our weekend at SXSW when we had no plan and no money, but a lot of ambition and excitement for a good time! This is our SXSW show. We start with Natalia Linares, who was in charge of SOL LIFE SXSW— an official SXSW showcase featuring the next generation of modern cross-cultural sounds. Also joining us is Jessica Reeves, the COO of Voto Latino. At SXSW Interactive, Voto Latinos announced the launch of a new app which allow people to scan their ID to register to vote. We close the show with Ovarian Psycos. The documentary about the all-female bicycle collective from East LA made its feature debut at SXSW Film with a total of three packed showings. Directed by Kate Trumbull-LaValle and Joanna Sokolowski, the documentary follows the group of predominately young Latina women referred to as “Ovas.”
