The Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed 75 years ago to protect Europe and North America against Russian aggression – a mission that is once again top priority, as NATO supports Ukraine's battle against President Vladimir Putin. U.S. Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith joins The Post's Jonathan Capehart for a conversation about NATO's upcoming 75th anniversary summit, the alliance's role in helping to "build a bridge" to Ukraine's membership within NATO and the "continued unity" among NATO allies in supporting Ukraine's defense efforts. Conversation recorded on Thursday, June 27, 2024.
Julianne Smith serves as the United States Permanent Representative to NATO—a role she assumed at the end of 2021, shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Ambassador Smith sits down with One Decision's foreign correspondent Christina Ruffini and resident spymaster, former MI6 Chief Sir Richard Dearlove, for a discussion on what to expect at the NATO summit being held in Washington in July, which marks the 75th anniversary of the transatlantic military alliance. They discuss Ukraine's complicated path to membership, progress on Germany's stepped-up security commitments, and whether a second presidential term for Donald Trump will bolster member countries' defense spending. Plus, more on NATO's strategy to tackle global security challenges and counter Russia's influence with China.
NATO is promising to support Ukraine for as long as it takes in the war against Russia, but the July meeting of the alliance won't provide a concrete date for the Ukraine to join up. Membership includes a commitment from NATO countries to collectively respond if any country faces an armed attack. While NATO is increasing links in the Indo-Pacific, a key representative has sought to quell fears the alliance is attempting to expand in the Southern Hemisphere. The United States permanent representative to NATO Julianne Smith has spoken to Chief Political Correspondent Anna Henderson from Brussels

"Consensus is not a liability," the US envoy to NATO says, referring to the recent debate over delivering Western tanks to Ukraine. Julianne Smith says each NATO member comes with its own perspective but that the alliance is united in its purpose. She also told DW it was up to Kyiv to determine when it was ready to negotiate with Russia.
During the CNAS 2022 National Security Conference, Julianne Smith, U.S. Ambassador to NATO, joined Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend in conversation about Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. What Does Marketing Fatigue Look Like? First, we are better able to realize we are experiencing marketing fatigue by a feeling. It feels bad. If you're feeling overwhelmed, tired, or marketing your business is overwhelming, that is marketing fatigue. Sometimes just putting words to the feeling is helpful. Another piece is if you're scared to stop because you don't know what will happen could be marketing fatigue. With new apps and trends, it can be overwhelming. The thought of adding another platform to your plate may just make you snap. Tiktok, Reels, & Trends, OH MY! Instagram, Pinterest, and Tiktok are changing every second. Sometimes it feels like once we get a system down everything changes. Usually what happens is we buy a new course to teach us how to use it. There is a fear that if you're not the first on the new trends that you're done. But you actually don't need ot feel that way. But Juli suggests that there is a better way. How to Combat Marketing Fatigue First, Remember where you make money. If you are a maker like Juli, you can't compare yourself to someone who makes YouTube videos or Tiktoks for entertainment. Her business model isn't Instagram reels. Knowing where you make your money can help you prioritize your tasks. Second, understand that marketing fatigue is normal. Other people feel it, including those who are very successful. You are not alone. It's real. Knowing that can take the temperature down. Third, and most practically, remember your goals. What are your goals for being on a new platform or for using a feature?Julianne Smith is a nationally recognized wedding accessory designer, digital media strategist and small business educator. At nearly the same moment President Joe Biden declared him a "butcher," Vladimir Putin's missiles began falling in Lviv, Ukraine.Sending black smoke and flames billowing into the air, and injuring at least five people, the strikes on a fuel depot pierced what had been relative calm in the western hub city that had seen relatively little of the war that has engulfed the nation. The target hardly seemed coincidental. Biden was 250 miles away, visiting Ukrainian refugees in bitter cold at Poland's national stadium. He heard pleas from young mothers to pray for the men -- husbands, fathers, brothers -- they had left behind."We Ukrainian mothers are ready to strangle (Putin) with our bare hands," said a woman whose son remained to fight. Gathering up a small girl wearing a pink coat and pigtails, Biden told her he wanted to take her home. When he returned to his hotel, aides briefed Biden on the strikes in Lviv. A few hours later, propelled by heartache and anger, Biden walked into the courtyard of an old Polish castle to declare the Russian President "cannot remain in power."The very final words Biden would utter on his last-minute swing through Europe ended up being the most consequential, reverberating widely as Air Force One departed for Washington. They surprised his aides, many of whom spent hours honing the text of a speech viewed by the White House as a significant moment for Biden's presidency. The line Biden uttered wasn't in what they wrote.Gathered backstage at the castle, White House officials hastily issued a clarification -- one of several on this trip alone -- to say Biden wasn't calling for regime change. But not before the Kremlin issued its own affronted response, saying Russia's ruler is "not to be decided by Mr. Biden."The administration's downplaying of Biden's remark continued Sunday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying from Israel, "I think the President, the White House, made the point last night that, quite simply, President Putin cannot be empowered to wage war or engage in aggression against Ukraine or anyone else."The series of events that unfolded here Saturday afternoon placed into sharp relief the highly unsettled atmosphere that pervades Europe as Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its second month. A display of aggression from Putin in the borderlands of Ukraine was followed by an offhand yet forcefully delivered suggestion from Biden that Russians find another leader."He went to the National Stadium in Warsaw and literally met with hundreds of Ukrainians. He heard their heroic stories as they were fleeing Ukraine in the wake of Russia's brutal war in Ukraine. In the moment, I think that was a principled human reaction to the stories that he had heard that day," Biden's ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."Biden's view of Putin had been growing increasingly dark over the past month, according to officials, and his language has sharpened in describing a "pure thug," "murderous dictator," "war criminal" and, after visiting refugees at the stadium, a "butcher."His aides have said Biden has been hoping to avoid the Cold War, Washington versus Moscow dynamic he believes Putin desires. Instead, he left Europe more directly at odds with the Russian leader than ever.Whether that was his intention seemed unclear. The clarification the White House issued was at least the third time on Biden's trip a White House official felt obliged to clean up remarks the President made that appeared, on their own, startling. As he was hailing the heroism of the Ukrainians, Biden told US troops "you're going to see when you're there" -- even though he's vowed American forces won't be entering the conflict directly. Afterward, a spokesman said nothing had changed: "The President has been clear we are not sending US troops to Ukraine."And after Biden said he would respond "in kind" to the...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Guest Pastor, The Rev. Julianne Smith
Today’s guest is Julianne Smith of The Garter Girl, a company with a singular mission to design and hand-create a wedding heirloom that is so stylish and so special that brides couldn’t wait to save it for their daughters. Sometime during her journey building The Garter Girl, she also founded a popular D.C. wedding blog called United With Love, which she eventually sold. This episode was inspired by a blog post that Juli recently published titled Life Without Swipe Up, which essentially reflects on the obsession with getting 10,000 Instagram followers and the Swipe Up feature, and it explores why more followers doesn’t necessarily mean more success, the importance of knowing your niche and showing up consistently where your potential customers are. We chat all that and more throughout this episode, and we also learn how Juli used her background in PR and politics to vault The Garter Girl forward. Be sure to check out the show notes at daveyandkrista.com for the resources we mentioned during the episode, and I’d like to hear from you about what kind of content you’d like to see on the Brands that Book podcast as we move forward. I’d also like to know what episodes you’ve enjoyed the most so far and why. To leave your feedback, head on over to the Davey & Krista Facebook page and send us a message.
