A hole in the head is an hour long documentary about trepanation-the process of boring a hole in the skull. A Hole in the Head examines the development of 'modern' trepanation as used by people in The United Kingdom, The United States, and The Netherlands for the purpose of attaining a higher level of consciousness. This procedure, used by the Ancient Egyptians, Incas, and others, is believed to by the voluntarily trepanned to allow for renewed brain pulsations that increase brain blood volume and thereby improve brain function. Interviews regarding the history and the efficacy of the procedure are also held with some of the world's most respected neurosurgeons and anthropologistsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Venture with us into the unnerving realm of self-trepanation, where we unravel the stories of those who've pursued enlightenment by drilling into their own skulls. Jacquelyn Holland joins me as we peel back the layers of human curiosity, from the disturbing motivations behind this extreme act to the sobering aftermath. Through the lens of personal experiences, historical context, and the modern extreme body modification community, we confront the stark reality of what it means to chase a higher state of being at any cost.Today's episode is a tapestry of privilege, tragedy, and unorthodox paths toward what some believe to be higher consciousness. We bear witness to the chilling narratives of self-surgery on acid, dissect failed procedures with makeshift tools, and discuss the seductive allure of counterculture that led individuals like Bart and Joe to push the boundaries of body autonomy to the brink. Our journey through their lives offers a profound reflection on the influence of mentors, the psychological impact of childhood experiences, and the line between self-discovery and self-destruction.Prepare to have both your fascination and horror piqued as we narrate attempts to unlock the doors of perception through physical transformation. Listen in as we grapple with the legal and medical repercussions of these dangerous endeavours, and the ultimate question – can true enlightenment ever justify such risks? Join Jacquelyn and me on this twisted trek through the psyche of those who dare to bore into their own minds.

Created by Ben Counter Theme by Tom Rory Parsons Produced by Pacific S. Obadiah --- More about Out of Place: Andrew Moss doesn't have much going for him, he dropped out of college, he lives alone, and his job involves staring at, and cataloguing every bit of broken pottery or “interesting” historic thing in the basement of the Carruthers Institute. That all changes when a mysterious package arrives from a Mr. Havisham- Inside is an artifact as mysterious as it is old. Mr. Havisham's artifacts are a constant source of dread for Andrew, who is equal parts confused, excited, and terrified of their existence- Because they're not just out of time, but out of place. Andrew suspects that these artifacts don't come from our world at all, but another world, with another history. It's the only thing that could explain the marks of trepanation on a skull from the 80's, or a pamphlet from a world where Pompeii wasn't covered in ash. One of the oldest medical procedures in human history is also one of the riskiest. For thousands of years humans carried a type of proto brain surgery where a hole would be cut into the skull. We talk about owning and operating an independent DIY record label and why they choose to put out experimental music that defies genre boundaries. We discuss their labels' releases this past year and what they have in the works. We also talk about their own bands and projects and finding time to focus on those while independently running a label, as well as the dangers of putting out vinyl for small labels (especially with the current vinyl shortage). Trepanation is an ancient surgical procedure in which an opening is fashioned through the human skull, exposing the outer dura mater of the brain to the direct environment. - Trepanation dates back to the Neolithic era (pre-historic period) and is the oldest surgical procedure that archaeological evidence exists for. - It is believed that ancient cultures used this surgical intervention to ward off or release evil spirits. However, some evidence suggests that trepanation was also a primitive emergency surgery to treat head wounds. - Shockingly, trepanation was used cross-culturally throughout ancient history. Evidence of trepanation has been discovered in areas associated with ancient China, pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, pre-modern Europe, and medieval East Africa (among others). - In modern times, certain bizarre subcultures and pseudo-scientific movements believe trepanation can result in more alertness, heightened perceptions, increased drive, and feelings of peace. These individuals believe drilling a hole in their own skull has psychological benefits and choose to “self-trepanate” themselves. - Herein, we discuss the history associated with trepanation, the archaeological evidence, as well as the modern usage of trepanation by fringe subcultures in modern times. - What say you?

This week we talk about trepanation- an ancient surgical method we still use today to relieve intracranial pressure by making a hole in the skull. Remember that the opinions given in the episode are not intended to offend anyone. Also, we do not offer medical advice.
Throughout the ages - and in some places still to this day - there have been some extreme practices based on some fairly insane ideas. Depending on what year you went to the doctor for a headache, you could have left the visit with either a hole in your head or high as a kite. Although you would think most prefer the latter, and that the former could never happen under any circumstances, that's not the craziest thing that we have heard of, and we're not just blowing smoke up your ass (foreshadow game strong). In this episode of TS2M, the guys talk a little about the history of medicine and barbaric treatments, briefly touching on the methods behind some of the madness. While most of the things mentioned have been discontinued due to obvious brutality issues, perhaps some of them will have their day in the future... I mean, who wouldn't want a plant to build a house for them?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/talkstupid2me)

Trepanning: Holes in the Head as presented by Fort Fritz: Campfire TalesNarrated by Nick Spry on Cannibal Hospital
This first installment of their Psychedelic Cults series covers the early history of hallucinogens and their impact on the 60's and hippie culture. Unsatisfied with chemical enlightenment, some psychonauts, including Bart Hughes, Amanda Feilding, and Joe Mellen, pursued trepanation (i.e. boring a hole in their skull) in their eternal quest to stay high forever.
Amanda Feilding is flying the flag for the medical benefits of recreational drugs like cannabis and LSD with her pioneering work at The Beckley Foundation. Based out of the 75-year-old's tumbling country pile in Oxfordshire – which is ringed by a moat and has an island encircled with temple-like pillars – the foundation funds leading research into the medical benefits of psychedelics and mind-altering substances. Amanda is also a countess whose lineage traces back to Charles II of England. In the 1960s, after travelling around Sri Lanka on her own, she discovered acid and hung out with the beat poets of the era, never without her beloved pet pigeon Birdie by her side. She met the Dutch scientist Bart Hughes, who introduced her to the shamanic practice of trepanation – essentially drilling a hole in one's head, which she performed on herself in 1970. Needless to say, a conversation with Amanda Feilding, with the wind blowing through the trees, is quite a trip in itself… Presenter: Kate Hutchinson Producer: Lucy Dearlove Photos: Laura Kelly www.thelastbohemians.co.uk @thelastbohemianspod Music: Blue Dot Sessions - Disinter Blue Dot Sessions - Solemn Application Blue Dot Sessions - Slow Casino Blue Dot Sessions - Thread Magenta
Trepanation is the world's oldest surgery, and it's still being performed. Some people even perform it on themselves. Thankfully, Scott McNulty is in the studio to talk about what the heck is going on, with trepanation, and so much more. Spoiler Alert: Everyone has lost their god damned minds.
In this episode of ScrubCaps, Nathan talks about some weird and crazy old medical practices that we still use today! Our reasoning for using some of these methods may have been slightly skewed but maybe history had a few things right. With new technology, we have uncovered the true health benefits of some of these methods. As much as it pains me to say, spirits don't live in your body. Or at least not that we know of yet :) Join Nathan as he talks about some interesting practices.ScrubCaps: Every Monday! Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Podcasts and more!Want more? First up this week: Steven Yeun! Fans of The Walking Dead know and love Steven for his time on the show as the beloved Glenn Rhee. Lately, though, he's taken on some even more thrilling roles. Last year, he starred in the Netflix hit Okja. Earlier this year he played Squeeze, the union organizing rabble rouser in the hit Sorry To Bother You. And now Steven's starring in a beautiful, engrossing new film called Burning - it's South Korea's entry into the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this year. Then, join Jesse as he embarks on a gross, strange and hilarious overview of weird medical history: Trepanation! Humors! Bad surgery! The guides on our tour? Justin and Dr. Sydnee McElroy, husband and wife hosts of the MaxFun podcast Sawbones. They just wrote a new book based on the podcast and have loads of great, gory info. Just in time for Halloween! Finally: Jesse tells you about the person who inspired him to take up radio.
To help us understand what this trepanning is and what it actually might do to the ones attempting it, we have been joined by neuroscientist Dr. Matthew Murtha who also runs the science radio show Technically Funny. Doctor Anna's Imaginarium - annazakrisson.com

Trepanation is an ancient surgical procedure and we've found the millennia-aged skulls to prove it - each punctured and gouged to relieve inner-pressure and inner-madness.
