Navigating PCS Chaos, Saving Money, and Finding Adventure! PCSing is a constant in military life, often bringing stress, extra costs, and confusion. But it doesn't have to be a nightmare! In this episode, we dive deep into practical tips and strategies to help you survive your next Permanent Change of Station (PCS), save money, and maybe even make it an adventure. We cover everything from getting your paperwork in order to leveraging financial benefits and preparing your family for the journey. In this episode, we discuss key strategies for managing your PCS: Getting Organized & Paperwork: The importance of physical binders and electronic backups for documents. Tips for outprocessing checklists and hand-carrying essential items like orders, Power of Attorneys, birth certificates, passports, and social security cards. Keep vital documents separate from movers. Financially Preparing: The crucial need to start saving cash early for unreimbursed expenses. Access to liquid money helps with stress management and avoiding debt. Cutting expenses is the first step to saving. Understanding Financial Benefits: Dislocation Allowance (DLA): An entitlement can be taken as an advance upfront (not a loan). Rates vary by pay grade and dependents (e.g., O-5 w/ dependents $5,339, E-4 w/ dependents $3,400 in 2025).  PCS Pay Advance: Option for up to one month's base pay, interest-free, paid back over 12 months. A tool for necessary situations, better than high-interest loans. Moving Your Stuff (HHG government move vs. PPM): Options include full government shipment (through TMO) or the Personally Procured Move (PPM). A partial PPM is recommended for conus moves to get paid for weight in your car. A full PPM offers significant profit potential by paying you the government's cost (examples mentioned: Jamie's $14,000 profit in 2023, and potential $10,000 profit in 2025). Challenge misinformation about PPM rules by referencing the JTR. Temporary Living Expenses (TLE) & Temporary Living Allowance (TLA): TLE (CONUS to CONUS, CONUS to OCONUS, or OCONUS to CONUS variants): Max $290/day, limited to 21 days, can be split between old and new PDS. Can be used for M&IE even when staying with family/friends. TLA (OCONUS): Up to 60 days upon arrival, 10 days upon departure. Covers lodging plus M&IE. Reference the JTR due to common misinformation. Prioritize minimizing stress over maximizing per diem. Preparing Your Family: Frame the move as an adventure. Acknowledge feelings (sadness, excitement) for everyone. Involve older kids in packing. Remember it's a team effort. Decluttering: Less stuff makes moving easier, especially with PPM. Reduces mental stress. Try methods like the hanger trick, Marie Kondo ("spark joy"), or the "poop test" for toys. Holding a garage sale can generate extra cash. Smart Travel & Leave: Explore circuitous travel or taking leave en route by getting it on your orders. PCS is a prime opportunity to take leave between assignments. Can take leave before departing or upon arrival. Understand BH timing. Inventory & Support: Video and photograph your belongings for inventory in case of loss or damage. You are not alone. Lean on your support network, friends, family, or sponsor for help. Jeb and Blake crawl through the cobbled streets of 1978 television to find out what was going on when IN SEARCH OF went looking for Jack the Ripper.  A lot of this episode is about "The Royal Conspiracy" - the idea that Prince Albert Victor (aka "Prince Eddy") was secretly Jack the Ripper.   This was largely derived from a book called Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, an ironic title since it turned out to be neither final nor the solution.  This was written by Stephen Knight, who appears in the episode. Shortly after this he will develop brain cancer and pass away. The story also involves Prince Albert Victor's surgeon, Dr. William Gull.  We discuss the "modern plague" of Gin in London at the time. (That link is to the Pub Map.) Alert listener Dr. David Cockcroft sent us a link to the 1886 London Poverty Maps of Charles Booth. It's a treasure trove of information contemporary to the time of this case (and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes episode as well). Nimoy Fashion Alert! Did you notice that big book lying flat behind Nimoy's head? That's a book about Vincent Van Gogh. We'll hear more about him in Season 4.  In our bonus episode about pop-culture of JTR we talked about a weird 6-part BBC crime series which pitted two fictional modern TV police detectives against the case.  Wendy Sturgess was one of the writers.  We discuss some of the appalling poverty of the area of London where the murders took place. This included discussion of Jack London's book about London. "The People of the Abyss" - that was the name of a work by American fiction writer Jack London.  It's available online. A young Donald Rumbalow makes an appearance.  We briefly discuss the "wizard money" of England at the time.  The Police News vintage paper is shown several times in the episode. The strange convergence of Jack the Ripper, Sherlock Holmes, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde merge into a weird mix of fact and fantasy through the decades. The Zodiac killer was our modern day Jack the Ripper. Both maintained a small circle in which they chose to kill, and both only have a very small agreed upon number of victims (JTR has 5 Zodiac has 5 fatalities and 2 seriously injured). Sam carved out his own piece of family history at Thruxton, Hampshire, this weekend, turning both first career pole positions into his first two Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship race wins in dominant lights-to-flag fashion while setting the Formula Ford lap record. An awesome start for round seven put Brabham clear of JTR teammate Jayde Kruger and able to extend a one second advantage over second placed Harrison Scott. But before the 20 minute race could get into a flow, a lengthy full course yellow came into force on lap three following Chris Mealin’s heavy off, from which he thankfully emerged OK. Managing the pressure of six laps circulating under the safety car while debris was cleared, Brabham made the perfect restart and remained unchallenged to take his long-awaited and much deserved first career race win. Brabham delivered another cracking start from the third row (reverse grid) for round eight to run fourth following a close opening lap dice with Scott and Ashley Sutton. In blistering form, the son of sportscar legend David Brabham posted the Formula Ford circuit lap record of 1:11.910 on lap five while embroiled in the fight for second. Although a move at the Complex didn’t quite pay off in the final stages, Brabham fought back to get important points for fifth. Back on pole for the third and final race of the weekend, the third generation driver once again nailed the start to lead Kruger and Scott from the first turn. Brabham never looked back, brilliantly managing the tyres and fuel consumption to notch up his second Formula Ford victory 0.6 seconds clear of teammate and current championship leader, Kruger. “This weekend has just been incredible, said Brabham. “We started off with two pole positions – the first of my career – and to get my first ever race win is just something so special and a day I’ll never forget. We got solid points in race two on the reverse grid and I’m really chuffed to have set the series lap record. “The last race was just fantastic. I was maintaining the gaps and pushing when I needed to. I had to think about the tyres, manage the fuel and back off where I could without losing too much time. It was the perfect race and now I’m aiming for more of the same at Oulton Park. Brabham’s outstanding Thruxton form retains sixth in the title fight, the gap to fifth now standing at just 14 points ahead of the next Oulton Park rounds.
