We're taking a quick pit stop from our regularly scheduled Elvis programming to cover his granddaughter Riley Keough's directorial debut: War Pony! After catching up on Riley Keough News (and one email from a concerned listener seeking our Tickle Me episode), we dive into War Pony to talk about the story behind the movie, the many types of stories that are ready to be told (and are finally getting a chance to be told), and Keough's confidence as a first-time director (alongside her directorial partner and best friend Gina Gammell). We talk about the similarities we find to American Honey, the nearly overwhelming sense of looming dread throughout the film, and how the film seems to have some Zola vibes. We discuss our favorite scenes and moments, the cozy sense of community on display, and how naturally the film uses music.

"War Pony" had its world premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Camera d'Or for best debut film for co-directors/writers Gina Gammell and Riley Keough. The film follows the intertwined lives of two young Lakota boys living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Ema Sasic was fortunate to get the opportunity to speak with not only Gina Gammell and Riley Keough but also co-writer Franklin Sioux Bob and producer Willi White (all recorded before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes occurred) about their work on the film, what the movie means to them, and more. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in limited release from Momentum Pictures and is available on demand. Thank you, and enjoy! This week it's all about Indigenous films at Spoilerpiece Theatre. But before we delve into them, Evan pays tribute to his friend, teacher, and writing partner, Dr. Bryan Krull, who passed away very suddenly. He describes how they met, became friends, and decided to team up to write Your '80s Movie Guide to Better Living, as he expresses his gratitude for their friendship over the years. Moving on to the week's films, we start by reviewing Gina Gammell and Riley Keough's emotionally challenging Indigenous drama WAR PONY (3:50), which follows two young Oglala Lakota men growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Next, we discuss Morrisa Maltz's tender narrative/documentary hybrid, THE UNKNOWN COUNTRY (26:36), starring co-writer Lily Gladstone as a young woman grieving her grandmother as she travels through the American Midwest and makes her way down to Texas. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the winner of our directors' first film poll, Céline Sciamma's 2007 queer romance/coming-of-age drama WATER LILIES!

In “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” Beth Nguyen writes about being a refugee, feeling like an imposter as both American and Vietnamese, and being separated from her mom for 11 years. James Cameron-Wilson takes Simon Rose through the UK box office chart, down 35%, thanks to the hot weather. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is #2 but the 7th in the series didn't impress James, apart from its intriguing 1990s locations. He was more taken by War Pony, a cinema verité look at growing up as Native Americans though it concentrated more on atmosphere than story. On Disney+, Eva Longoria directed the true story of the creation of the Cheetos snack. A little man made good tale, he found it cheesy and clichéd. And James also pays tribute to the actress, and former MP, Glenda Jackson. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Flick Beckett speaks to co-directors Riley Keough and Gina Gammell about their new film, War Pony, in cinemas now. The stunning and utterly compelling directorial debut of Riley Keough (star of Daisy Jones and The Six) and Gina Gammell, winner of Cannes' Caméra d'Or At 23, Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) just wants to make something of himself. Whether it's syphoning gas, delivering goods or breeding Poodles, he is determined to carve his way to the “American Dream”. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Matho (LaDainian Crazy Thunder) can't wait to become a man. Desperate for approval from his young, unavailable father, a series of destructive decisions turns Matho's life upside down and he finds himself unequipped to deal with the harsh realities of the adult world. A powerful tale of life, hope and belonging created over a period of four years in collaboration with members of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Glasgow Film Festival is nearing its close, so we've asked two of our favourite critics, Iana Murray and Rory Doherty, to join us to share their favourite films of the festival. END AD---" "ar's event marks the first as festival director for Egyptian filmmaker Amir Ramses, who was appointed earlier this year, as well as industry head Reem Allam. Ramses was tapped just weeks after Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy stepped down as festival president, after a four-year tenure in which he helped to revamp the long-running event. Hefzy was particularly instrumental in expanding the fest's international reach, bolstering ties with counterparts overseas, and launching an industry component that has quickly established itself as one of the leading platforms for filmmakers from the region. The festival's 44th edition, which runs until Nov. 22, unspools amid a crowded fall calendar of Arab fests, running parallel to Marrakech (Nov. 11 – 19) and on the eve of Saudi Arabia's splashy Red Sea Film Festival, which hosts its second edition in Jeddah from Dec. 1 – 10. Meanwhile, Egypt's El Gouna Film Festival, which for five years had occupied a late-October slot and brought a touch of star power to the Red Sea resort town, was put on pause this year. Its future is uncertain. Speaking to Variety on the eve of opening night, Ramses — who was the artistic director in El Gouna from 2017-2021 — described a spirit of healthy competition among the region's festivals, who he sees less as rivals than collaborators working toward a common goal of bolstering Arab cinema. “We're talking on a weekly basis about where we are, how we can support each other,” he said. “It's not about taking the lead. You can't build the region on one strong festival. We complement each other.” In his first year in Cairo, Ramses has nevertheless been keen to secure the kind of lineup that helped land El Gouna on the map. Along with the regional premiere of “The Fabelmans,” he's helped attract a strong slate of titles already making waves on the international festival circuit. Among the films celebrating regional premieres in Cairo are Carla Simón's Berlin Golden Bear Winner “Alcarràs”; Alice Diop's Venice Grand Jury Prize and Lion of the Future award winner “Saint Omer”; Alejandro Loayza Grisi's Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “Utama”; Sally El Hosaini's Toronto opening film “The Swimmers”; and a host of award winners from this year's Cannes Film Festival, including Lukas Dhont's Grand Prix winner “Close,” Jerzy Skolimowski's Jury Prize-winning “EO” and Riley Keough and Gina Gammell Camera d'Or winner “War Pony.” At the same time, the longest continually running showcase of Arab cinema will look to shine a spotlight on the region's emerging and established talents. In the international competition, Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla's “19B,” which celebrates its world premiere, will screen among 14 titles vying for the festival's Golden Pyramid, including Lebanese director Ali Cherri's Cannes Directors' Fortnight player “The Dam.” Ahmad Abdalla's “19B” has its world premiere in the festival's international competition. AIE has now conquered all of the bosses in World of Warcraft MoP! The raid team “If Looks Could Kill” has taken down Lei Shen and is now currently working on heroic modes! We don't normally make these sorts of announcements, but a ‘AIE First' was worth a mention! Yet another game has joined the AIE Family of being a drain on simply time, not time AND money. Rift has announced they are going Free to Play! Join your fellow guildies in the world of Telara and enjoy all the dynamic content they have to offer... for free! There have been various threads that have gone up surrounding Nerdtacular this year, and it looks like someone has made a ‘roll call' that you can sign up on. For links to all of the news items we just mentioned, see our show notes at theaiepodcast.com And now it's time to jump into AIE's adventures in Lord of the Rings Online... GAME NEWS Dux: Update 11 dropped - Treachery of the White Hand. 5 new areas (rolling hills now frozen, vast areas of tundra, along with flash frozen forests, lakes, everything). Saruman's hold over Rohan brings a chill to all - the chill effect. Mounted Combat changes Combat. On mounts. What is more awesome than that?!?!?! Removed the ‘mobility' elements of the tree and integrated parts of it in to the base warhorse itself. Also reworked the trees to allow for more integration (synergy - ugh) with the character that rides it. The goal is to make the transition of playing your character on foot doesn't seem so different to riding on horseback. Apolas >Lalia's Market >Hobbit Gifts Vanflicke >Housing upkeep and new foreclosure - you can prepay your taxes/rent further in advance and it will hold for six months before going into escrow. >Changes to VIP (paid) vs. F2p or B2p - better experience bonus for VIPs >Spring Festival Spring Festival runs from May 21 to June 4th (only two weeks) this year. Lots of events in the Spring Festival, it seems like it gets busier every year.
