In this episode we interview Nick Troutman who is a professional kayaker, the host of The Great Family Adventure and the one behind the Art of Awesome Podcast. Growing up in a small town near the Ottawa River it wasn't long until Nick found himself spending the summer with his friend at a kayak school. He was immediately hooked and fell in love with the freestyle aspect. Next thing Nick knew, he was traveling all over the world competing professionally. Every minute he wasn't on the river, Nick immersed himself in the culture of the country he was visiting. By the time he and his wife were ready to have kids they decided they were going to take them along for the ride. Fast forward to now, where he's still competing, while also showing people the importance of sharing adventures together on The Great Family Adventure. If you've ever wondered why you should take every opportunity to explore with your kids, or what it's like to be a professional kayaker, then this one's for you! “The moment you accept responsibility for EVERYTHING in your life is the moment you gain the power to change ANYTHING in your life.” - Hal ElrodToday I had the absolute pleasure to bring Jeffrey Holst onto the show as we dive deep into his story of overcoming obstacles and adversity. Jeff also gives a very practical MasterClass on Real Estate and why it might be one of the best assets to hold during inflation. Though beyond the Real Estate advice and incredible stories, Jeff shares his incredible life motto of- 'No Bad Days', and how this and his positive mindset are likely his most valuable asset. During today's Friday Fire I talk about how when we are creating, building or starting anything it will always go though an "ugly" period where the project doesn't look exactly like you have it imagined in your mind. This could be baking a cake, or painting a picture or starting a business, though in the early stages it is in the building/ creation phase where it doesn't always look pretty, though don't get down on yourself and more importantly don't let others put you down. Imagine if you were baking bread and you had only mixed the flour and water and someone critiqued your work saying this looks nothing like bread. If you give in or give up too early you will never create your masterpiece. "Go to bed a little smarter than when you woke up.”― Charlie MungerOn today's show I bring back kayaking legend and one of my best friends, Rafa Ortiz, to talk about the ability to learn virtually anything via YouTube and online learning, podcasts and books. The world we live in right now is filled with so much information, most of which is free to consume, that there is really no reason not to be able to push through any barriers or self doubt. Rafa tells how he has literally build a house from starch with the help of and advice from mentors on YouTube and in person. I think there is so much applicable advice throughout this show as the information can be applied to virtually any area in life. During todays Friday Fire I reflect on a simple question my 8 year old son asked at our dinner table, "would you rather be the best of the worst or the worst of the best?" Today I get to bring back the Kayaking Monk, Arjuna Ishaya, as we dive into the ideas behind being present and the concepts of his new book Chasing More and Finding Enough. Arjuna is such a down to earth guy and shares wisdom beyond his years. It is also such a fun conversation to speak with a monk about presence and fulfillment in life, while using kayaking and extreme sports as his personal examples. Arjuna's book is a must read for anyone that is continually looking for more, is any area of life, and I personally couldn't recommend it any higher. "It's Impossible", said Pride,"It's Risky", said Experience,"It's Pointless", said Reason,"Give it a Try", Whispered the Heart. During todays Friday Fire I dive into the commonly told topic of following your heart. There are many things both internally and externally that can be expressed for reasons to not follow you heart, there can be expressed by close friends or family, or your self pride and experience. Though only once you follow your heart can you end life without the feeling of regret. So when your heart whispers, listen closely, and give it a shot. Try, learn, try again. It's not the lack of resources, it's your lack of resourcefulness that stops you. – Tony RobbinsDuring todays Friday Fire I share with you the fact that it isn't a lack of resources that is our problem it is a simply lack of resourcefulness. We can likely fix all of our problems once we start getting creative with possible solutions. It is easy to say I don't have the money or the time or the connections etc, though really what you are saying is I'm not resourceful enough to figure out a solution to the situation at hand. Today I got the pleasure to speak with one of the best healers that I have ever had the pleasure to work with, Olga Voevodskaya. Olga is a Russian born healer now residing in Canada. She started out as a nurse and transitioned into massage, then Osteopathy and Cranial Therapy. Though my travels around the world trying all sorts of different types of healing types with a mix of eastern and western medicine. Olga has a special touch as she is able to feel different fluid and energy flows within the body. Is the financial chair you are sitting on truly stable? What if a black swan (unforeseen event) came around and started cutting your chairs legs, how much could you withstand?During todays Friday Fire I discuss a concept of having a financial chair, with each source of income representing one of your chairs legs. Are your sitting on a strong and stable single legged stool, or do you have multiple legs coming out of all directions like a tree branch. Not only can a so called "side hustle" help bring some extra stability to your financial chair, it can also be a source of income by doing something you already love to do.Please let me know what you think about this content with a rating or review on Apple Podcasts, or hit my up with a DM on Instagram @NickTroutmanKayak I would love to hear more about the subjects that you are most interested in, or any individuals that you would like me to interview. Matthew was asked who his hero is, and asking thinking about it he responds with 'me 10 years down the line'. This is a concept around chasing your potential and your best self. Today during our Friday Fire I discuss a quote I had been pondering about, regarding that fact that you don't stumble upon success. Success comes from setting a goal, then making a plan and most importantly talking action towards achieving that goal. You don't accidentally wake up with 6 pack abs or accidentally have a million dollars in your banks account or accidentally find the love of your life. Think of your goal, pick the path and direction, and take action to get there. You don't stumble upon success. “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places." - Ernest HemingwayToday I got to sit down and talk with a childhood hero of mine, and one of the biggest names in the history of whitewater kayaking, Scott Lindgren. Scott has completed some of the biggest expeditions in the sport of kayaking including one of the most widely known, the Yarlung Tsangpo expedition in Tibet. Scott has also filmed and produce many of the biggest films within the sport of whitewater kayaking, like 'Good to the last Drop', 'Burning Time', and 'Black Book' to name a few. Though Scott is usually behind the lens while filming, he has recently been in front of the camera with filming the documentary of his life with Rush Sturges for the Netflix documentary, The River Runner. Scott shares his incredible story, including his vulnerabilities with dealing with his brain tumor and succumbing to the fact that somethings in life you simply can not control. "When you fall off the horse, durst yourself off and get back on again."Today during my Friday Fire I discuss the widely used phrase regarding falling off the horse and getting back up again. More than anything this has to do with the simply fact that I had fallen off my routine of regularly creating and posting this podcast due to technical difficulty. Though it is too easy to use that as an excuse and a reason to stay down, so instead of waiting a couple more days to post my Monday Deep Dive interview, I decided to share my thoughts about simply getting up and continuing on wherever you left off. "Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from making bad decisions." - Mark Twain Today during our Friday Fire I discuss the concept around never knowing enough information. Whether it be scouting a rapid, making an investment, choosing a career path or pretty much anything in life, we simple will never have enough information, as there will always be unknowns that we didn't take into account or data that was missed. So how do we deal with this? We simply take the information available to us and make the best decision we can with the information we have. Yes we will make mistakes or miscalculations at times, but that is how we learn and grow and hopefully it will add to more information data points for next time. Today during our Friday Fire I discuss the idea of Slay the Dragons i our lives. The Dragon is whatever problem or situation you are dreading or putting off because it might be too uncomfortable or just something you don't want to do. This dragon could be paying a bill, or a conversation or a fear of something. Though the longer you put it off or avoid it the bigger the dragon grows. It is much easier to slay the dragon now before it continues to grow and get bigger by each day. The beauty of slaying the dragon is that you get the gold that the Dragon is guarding. This gold is the accomplishment you feel when you do anything that is hard or the pride you feel when you have done something that is uncomfortable. I encourage us all to slay the Dragons we all have in life, and reap the golden treasure that comes afterwards. Today I dive deep into the power of belief. Belief is different from hope, will and trying, belief is actually believing that what you want to have, do, or be and not just seeing it in the future, but knowing that is will occur in the future and nothing can stop you. If you really want something in life you have to believe that you will do, have or be that, and that nothing can stop you and every obstacle that comes in your way you WILL overcome. The next time you want something in life, don't just talk about it, don't just try, but actually turn to belief and the massive power that comes with belief.Book- Think and Grow RichPlease let me know what you think about this content with a rating or review on Apple Podcasts, or hit my up with a DM on Instagram @NickTroutmanKayak I would love to hear more about the subjects that you are most interested in, or any individuals that you would like me to interview. During todays Fridays Fire I dive into the idea that no matter what is going on in life, no matter the possible hard times, or stresses in life, it could always be worse. There is a saying that goes, if we were to put all our problems into a pile, we would quickly choose to take ours back. The idea being that everyone has problems, issues and stresses, and realize that what you might think of as a big problem might be so small in the grand scheme of life. Remember, that if you have a roof over your head and food to eat you are already better off them most people in this world. So the next time something goes wrong, or not the way you planned, just try to remember this saying "It could always be worse."Please let me know what you think about this content with a rating or review on Apple Podcasts, or hit my up with a DM on Instagram @NickTroutmanKayak I would love to hear more about the subjects that you are most interested in, or any individuals that you would like me to interview. "Price is what you pay value is what you get" ~ Warren BuffettDuring todays Fridays Fire I dive into the discussion between price and value. Just because it is on sale, doesn't make it a deal, and on the flip fide of things just because something it expensive doesn't necessarily make it more valuable. When you are looking for a deal it is not always about the price it's about the value you get. Maybe a deal is spending $30 on a book that gives you 30 years of experience, or listing to a podcast for an hour and getting invaluable ideas from it. Just remember it's not what you pay, it's what you get. Today's Friday fire is all about being the Practitioner Instead of the Theorist. It is great to learn theory, though theory is useless without action. So make sure you try to learn, though down get caught up in analysis paralysis and instead take some action. Beware of the thought that I just need to read one more book, or course or video or podcast. Take action even if its just little baby steps. During today's Friday Fire I dive into the idea behind the thermostat of the mind. This Thermostat in our mind works with everything in life, whether it be finance, relationships or our health and weight. We will always stay in the range that we have set in our mind. It might change a couple degrees higher or lower, though our range will always stay the same, that is anyways until we decide to change our settings on our Thermostat in the mind. If you want to see change you MUST set a new state and range in the mind before you will see the results in your life.
